Abstract:A new bioelectrochemical approach based on metabolic activities inoculated bacteria, and the microbial fuel cell (MFC) acts as biocatalysts for the natural conversion to energy of organic substrates. Among several factors, the organic substrate is the most critical challenge in MFC, which requires long-term stability. The utilization of unstable organic substrate directly affects the MFC performance, such as low energy generation. Similarly, the interaction and effect of the electrode with organic substrate are well discussed. The electrode-bacterial interaction is also another aspect after organic substrate in order to ensure the MFC performance. The conclusion is based on this literature view; the electrode content is also a significant challenge for MFCs with organic substrates in realistic applications. The current review discusses several commercial aspects of MFCs and their potential prospects. A durable organic substrate with an efficient electron transfer medium (anode electrode) is the modern necessity for this approach.

Abstract:The energy generation without causing environmental pollution is a unique idea to make a better survival for human beings. In this regard, microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have been considered to be eco-friendly and efficient technology to produce renewable energy. The operations and functioning of MFCs technology were affected by many factors but the electrodes are the most essential and significant aspects in MFCs. Moreover, a wide variety of electrodes and MFCs configurations have been developed to enhance the electrochemical performance of MFCs. The carbon materials (graphite, graphene etc.) were commonly used for the electrode fabrication, due to some unique properties such as high conductivity, good thermal stability, high surface area, good mechanical power etc. In this chapter, different electrode materials, used for anode fabrication were summarized to reveal the performance/efficiency toward the generation of electricity. Finally, the electrochemical characterizations tool, current challenges, and future perspectives of the electrode in MFCs were discussed briefly.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a sustainable energy source that can harvest electricity energy from organic wastes. However, its low electricity output remains the bottleneck for practical applications. Herein, we report a novel approach to increase extracellular electron transfer between bacteria and anodes, thus enormously enhancing the bioelectricity output in MFCs. We find that the abolishment of the lactate synthesis pathway increases intracellular releasable electrons, which are subsequently transferred to the anode via a secreted diffusive electron shuttle. Thereby, such genetically modified strain delivers a much higher and more stable electricity output than its parental strain in MFCs.

Abstract:Renewable energy technologies are developing day by day. One of the novel renewable energy technologies is microbial fuel cells (MFC). MFCs are eco-friendly as it uses electroactive bacteria (exoelectrogens) to generate electricity by using organic and inorganic waste from the wastewater. Electricity generation and wastewater treatment are its primary applications. The construction of MFC consists of the electrodes which may be modified by using nanoparticles (gold and iron oxide) or pre-treatment methods (sonication and autoclave sterilization). This technology is further studied for the detection and reduction of toxic heavy metals in wastewater. The MFCs are also modified into microbial electrolysis cells to make biofuel such as hydrogen. The present review is based on the applications of the MFC, key challenges, and modification strategies.

Abstract:Abstract As a bioelectrochemical hybrid system, microbial fuel cell converts chemical energy into electrical energy through microbial metabolism, which has great advantages of energy conservation and environmental protection, high energy conversion efficiency, and reduced sludge volume. Therefore, how to improve the power generation performance and output power of MFC has been a hot topic in recent years. Based on this, on the basis of reviewing many literatures, this review analyzes the main factors influencing the electrical performance of MFC by combining the principle of MFC and its electronic transfer mechanism, including battery reactor structure, exchange membrane, anode microorganisms, electrode materials and parameters, etc. At the same time, the application prospect of MFC is discussed, including CW-MFC coupling technology, biosensor and sewage treatment technology. Finally, the present challenges of MFC are put forward, and a better application research direction is proposed for the future of MFC.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are sustainable energy technologies that could resolve pollution challenges brought by various activities. It can meet energy demand by producing bioelectricity through catabolizing organic matter. Over the past two decades, research on many microbes have been used in MFCs, which intrigued researchers to explore the underlying electron transfer mechanism between microbe and anode. Electron transfer between electrode and microorganism occurs via different pathways: direct, indirect electron transfer and interspecies electron transfer. Shewanella and Geobacter are well‐known for microbe–electrode and microbe–microbe electron transfer. This review provides an overview of the significant varieties of microbes utilized in MFCs for simultaneous bioelectricity generation and wastewater treatment. Mechanisms of different modes of electron transfer involved during the oxidation of organic wastes in the anode section of MFCs are highlighted. Furthermore, this review also details some of the techniques to promote extracellular electron transfer efficiency which is important for the enhanced performance of MFC in terms of power, current generation and wastewater remediation. A perspective of challenges to be addressed for the effective functioning of these technologies, opportunities for MFC systems to be scaled up and associated techno‐economic analysis are discussed. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Optimization of microbial fuel cell process using a novel consortium for aromatic hydrocarbon bioremediation and bioelectricity generation

Abstract:Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) is an innovative bio-electrochemical approach which converts biochemical energy inherent in wastewater into electrical energy, thus contributing to circular economy. Five electrogenic bacteria, Kocuria rosea (GTPAS76), two strains of Bacillus circulans (GTPO28 and GTPAS54), and two strains of Corynebacterium vitaeruminis (GTPO38 and GTPO42) were isolated from a common effluent treatment plant (CETP) and were used individually as well as in consortium form to run double chambered "H" type microbial fuel cell. Individually they could produce voltage in the range of 0.4-0.7 V in the MFC systems. Consortium developed using GTPO28, GTPO38, GTPAS54 and GTPAS76 were capable of producing voltage output of 0.8 V with 81.81 % and 64 % COD and BOD reduction, respectively. The EPS production capacity and electricity generation by the isolated bacteria correlated significantly (r = 0.72). Various parameters like, effect of preformed biofilm, length of salt bridge and its reuse, aeration, substrate concentration and external resistance were studied in detail. The study emphasizes on improving the commercialization aspect of MFC with repeated use of salt bridge and improving wastewater treatment potential after optimization of MFC system. Polarization curve and power density trends were studied in optimized MFC. A maximum power density and current density achieved were 18.15 mW/m2 and 370.37 mA/m2, respectively using 5 mM sodium benzoate. This study reports the use of sodium benzoate as a substrate along with reusing of the salt bridge in MFC study with promising results for BOD and COD reduction, proving it to be futuristic technology for bio-based circular ecosystem development.

Abstract:Strong control over experimental conditions in microfluidic channels provides a unique opportunity to study and optimize membraneless microbial fuel cells (MFCs), particularly with respect to the role of flow. However, improved performance and transferability of results to the wider MFC community require improvements to device stability under all applied operational conditions. To address these challenges, we present an easy-to-fabricate membraneless MFC that combines (i) O2 elimination via a gas diffusion barrier, (ii) integrated graphite electrodes, and (iii) optimized electrode placement to avoid of cross-contamination under all applied flow rates. Attention to all of these design features in the same platform resulted in operation of a MFC with a pure-culture anaerobic Geobacter sulfurreducens biofilm for half a year, six times longer than previously reported, without the use of an oxygen scavenger. As a result of higher device stability under high flow rates, power densities were four times higher than reported previously for microfluidic MFCs with the same biofilm.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology is considered one of the renewable sources of energy for the production of bioelectricity from waste. Due to the depletion of fossil fuels and environmental considerations, MFC haa garnered increasing importance as it is a sustainable and environmentally-friendly method of generation of bioenergy. In MFC, electroactive bacteria (EAB) and biofilms are harnessed to convert organic substances to electrical energy. Extremophiles survive in extreme environments, and they have demonstrated potential applications in microbial electrical systems (MES) and MFC technology. The key limitations of MFC are the low power output and engineering constraints of the fuel cell. Hence, it is imperative to understand the genetics, key metabolic pathways, and molecular mechanisms of the EAB for enhancing the power generation in MFC. This chapter gives a brief overview of the scope and applications of extremophiles in wastewater treatment, bioelectricity, and biohydrogen production using MFC, eventually enhancing the functional efficiency of MFC.

Abstract:Increasing industrialization and urbanization have contributed to a significant rise in wastewater discharge and exerted extensive pressure on the existing natural energy resources. Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a sustainable technology that utilizes wastewater for electricity generation. MFC comprises a bioelectrochemical system employing electroactive biofilms of several aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, such as Geobacter sulfurreducens, Shewanella oneidensis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Ochrobacterum pseudiintermedium. Since the electroactive biofilms constitute a vital part of the MFC, it is crucial to understand the biofilm-mediated pollutant metabolism and electron transfer mechanisms. Engineering electroactive biofilm communities for improved biofilm formation and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secretion can positively impact the bioelectrochemical system and improve fuel cell performance. This review article summarizes the role of electroactive bacterial communities in MFC for wastewater treatment and bioelectricity generation. A significant focus has been laid on understanding the composition, structure, and function of electroactive biofilms in MFC. Various electron transport mechanisms, including direct electron transfer (DET), indirect electron transfer (IET), and long-distance electron transfer (LDET), have been discussed. A detailed summary of the optimization of process parameters and genetic engineering strategies for improving the performance of MFC has been provided. Lastly, the applications of MFC for wastewater treatment, bioelectricity generation, and biosensor development have been reviewed.

Abstract:This work evaluated the electrochemical, physical, biochemical, and molecular characterization of electrogens from a graphite felt anode when zinc oxide on activated carbon (ZnO/AC) was used as a cathodic electrocatalyst in a double-chambered microbial fuel cell (DCMFC). The electrochemical polarization behavior of the DCMFC showed that ZnO/AC had a higher power density (PD max ) of 89 mW m −2 with a corresponding cell current density (CD) of 248 mA m −2 and a voltage output of 395 mV, which was higher than those of the blank electrode used as a benchmark (PD max of 68 mW m −2 at a CD of 161 mA m −2 and a voltage of 421 mV). Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the morphology and interior properties of the strains varied among the rods (bacilli), spirals (vibrios), and spheres (diplococci, staphylococci and streptococci). In addition, biochemical characterization via the Vitek2 compact system and molecular analysis via 16 S rRNA and 18 S rRNA gene sequencing revealed the occurrence of nine prevalent species that were correlated with Sphingobacterium spiritivorum, Ochrobactrum anthropicus, Pseudomonas mendocina, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Staphylococcus equorum, Bacillus subtilis HQ334981.1, Kocuria kristinae KC581674.1 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae NR111007.1. Consequently, the present study outlines different characterization strategies for electrogenic microbes that play an important role in the overall performance of DCMFC for scaling up and managing existing environmental pollution for sustainable energy generation.

Abstract:The microbial fuel cell has been considered a promising alternative to traditional fossil energy. It has great potential in energy production, waste management, and biomass valorization. However, it has several technical issues, such as low power generation efficiency and operational stability. These issues limit the scale-up and commercialization of MFC systems. This review presents the latest progress in microbial community selection and genetic engineering techniques for enhancing microbial electricity production. The summary of substrate selection covers defined substrates and some inexpensive complex substrates, such as wastewater and lignocellulosic biomass materials. In addition, it also includes electrode modification, electron transfer mediator selection, and optimization of operating conditions. The applications of MFC systems introduced in this review involve wastewater treatment, production of value-added products, and biosensors. This review focuses on the crucial process of microbial fuel cells from preparation to application and provides an outlook for their future development.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology offers an alternative means for producing energy from waste products. In this review, several characteristics of MFC technology that make it revolutionary will be highlighted. First, a brief history presents how bioelectrochemical systems have advanced, ultimately describing the development of microbial fuel cells. Second, the focus is shifted to the attributes that enable MFCs to work efficiently. Next, follows the design of various MFC systems in use including their components and how they are assembled, along with an explanation of how they work. Finally, microbial fuel cell designs and types of main configurations used are presented along with the scalability of the technology for proper application. The present review shows importance of design and elements to reduce energy loss for scaling up the MFC system including the type of electrode, shape of the single reactor, electrical connection method, stack direction, and modulation. These aspects precede making economically applicable large-scale MFCs (over 1 m3 scale) a reality.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a novel technology that can be used for electricity generation during oxidization of the organic substances presented in the substrate. To obtain a desirable performance, it is essential to understand the influential factors on the MFC. Among the numerous factors affecting the MFC performance, substrate, microorganisms and their metabolism, electron transfer mechanism in an anodic chamber, electrodes material and the shape of electrodes, type of membrane, operating conditions such as temperature, pH and salinity, electron acceptor in a cathodic chamber and geometric design of the MFC are considered as the most important factors. Among different substrates, wastewater is a sustainable rich medium which can be treated by MFCs. There are various types of exoelectrogenic bacteria presented in wastewaters which can oxidize organic matter and transfer electrons to the anode without using mediators. Like other microbial systems, optimum pH and temperature enhance the bacterial growth which can improve the MFC performance. Despite the negative effect of salt on microbial growth, higher salinity and ionic strength can increase the conductivity of substrate and therefore enhance MFC performance. Scaling up MFC is a controversial issue which needs a comprehensive understanding of these factors. By using new inexpensive materials for electrodes and membrane for manufacturing MFCs, a more cost-effective design for scalable wastewater treatment and high power generation can be achieved. Furthermore, MFC is a suitable candidate for bioremediation of contaminated groundwater. These factors and their impact on the MFC performance have been reviewed in the present survey.

Abstract:Abstract: Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) have emerged as a compelling technological advancement that utilizes microbial metabolic processes to produce electricity from organic waste substrates. This review examines the latest advancements, prevailing challenges, and prospective developments of MFCs in relation to renewable energy generation and ecological sustainability. MFCs present a dual benefit by facilitating wastewater treatment while concurrently generating bioelectricity, thereby rendering them appealing for decentralized energy frameworks and waste management strategies. Recent progress in the fields of genetic engineering and synthetic biology has culminated in the development of optimized microbial strains and improved biofilm stability, which significantly enhances the efficiency of electron transfer. Innovations in electrode materials, including carbon nanotubes and graphene, have further augmented the performance metrics of these systems. Nevertheless, obstacles persist in augmenting power output, minimizing material costs, and scaling MFCs for larger industrial applications. This review also elucidates the environmental and economic implications of MFCs, particularly their capacity to mitigate carbon emissions and generate financial savings in the domain of wastewater treatment. Lastly, we delineate future research trajectories, concentrating on synthetic biology, hybrid renewable systems, and commercialization strategies that will catalyze the scalability and wider acceptance of MFC technology. The prospects for MFCs are indeed promising, providing innovative solutions to the pressing global challenges of energy production and waste management.

Abstract:Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) is a dual-edged technology which combines wastewater treatment with power generation. The chemical energy present in the organic matter of wastewater is usually transformed into electricity in MFCs through the action of electroactive bacteria on electrodes which act as catalysts. The MFC technology has piqued the interest of numerous researchers since it has the unique capability for wastewater treatment while concurrently generating some bioelectricity. When compared with traditional energy sources, MFCs have various advantages over other wastewater treatment processes, such as the trickling filter method and the commonly employed activated sludge process. These advantages include but are not limited to low energy requirements, low or no production of hazardous products, and mild reaction conditions. As a result, this wastewater treatment process is both cost-effective and long-term. Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs), which use bacterial electron transport mechanisms to generate energy, have become a viable technology for renewable energy production. This review investigates the evolutionary and functional connections between bacterial energy transduction mechanisms and mitochondrial electron transport chains, building on the endosymbiont theory of eukaryotic cell evolution. The conserved features and similarities between prokaryotic and eukaryotic electron transport pathways were elucidated, highlighting their common origins and roles in cellular bioenergetics. This discussion explores the essential mechanisms governing the movement of electrons and ions across biological membranes, crucial for generating energy and maintaining electrochemical gradients in bacteria and mitochondria. Capitalizing on these insights, we explore the applications of electrogenic bacteria in MFCs for renewable electricity generation. Optimal conditions for enhancing bacterial electron transfer to electrode surfaces are identified, paving the way for improved MFC performance. Potential large-scale implementations of MFCs in wastewater treatment, biosensing, and bioremediation of contaminated environments are discussed, underscoring their versatility and environmental benefits. The importance of investigating bioenergetic mechanisms at both the cellular and molecular scales of fully harnessing the capabilities of microbial energy conversion systems is highlighted in this review. By bridging the gap between fundamental cellular processes and sustainable technologies, we aim to advance renewable energy solutions that harness the remarkable capabilities of electrogenic microorganisms.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are the emerging technology for producing electricity directly from biodegradable organic matter using bacteria as catalyst. One of the most promising applications for MFCs is to use them simultaneously treating organic wastes while accomplishing power generation. The main problems for MFC are low electron transfer and power density. The electron transfer from the microbial cell to the fuel cell anode, as a process that links microbiology and electrochemistry, represents a key factor that defines the MFC power and energy output. In the paper, five key steps including fuel bio-oxidation, electron transfer to anode, electron transfer through the external circuit, proton diffusion and cathode reaction for electricity generation by MFC systems are identified and discussed in detail. Finally, the potential study directions in the future are prospected.
