Abstract:Metal ions have a significant impact on the environment and the growth and development of organism,therefore,the recognition and detection of metal ions in the environment and organism is gaining widespread attention. Among different analytical methods,fluorescence analysis has the advantages of high sensitivity,good selectivity,real-time and in situ detection,etc.,which is a good tool to achieve the recognition and detection of metal ions in the environment and organism. This paper is aimed to review the coumarin-based fluorescent sensors for the recognition and detection of heavy metal ions (Hg2+、Pb2+、Cd2+、Ni2+、Ag+),biologically important transition metal ions (Cu2+、Zn2+、Fe3+) and their applications in recent five years,focusing on the design and synthesis of sensors, recognition mechanism,sensing characteristics and applications. With the higher requirement for metal ions detection , the design of coumarin-based fluorescent sensors will be developed for better performance with higher sensitivity,selectivity and stronger anti-interference in the future. In addition, applications of coumarin-based fluorescent sensors in biological detection are expected to be further developed.
Reaction-based fluorescence probe for the detection of metal ions

Abstract:Metal ions are widely distributed in nature and they have key roles in the environment, bioscience and medical science. Some metal ions,such as Hg2+,Fe3+,Cu2+,Zn2+and Al3+,play important roles in the physiology and pathology of organisms. An excess or deficiency of these metal ions would lead to physiological dysfunction and cause a variety of diseases. Recently,reaction-based fluorescence probes have attracted considerable attention due to their high sensitivity and good selectivity. This review mainly focuses on reaction-based fluorescence probes for the detection of metal ions in the past five years. The design and synthesis of probes,their sensing mechanisms and their applications were summarized. Currently,the reaction-based fluorescence probes are still in their initial stages and hence many problems need to be solved. With the resolution of these problems, reaction-based fluorescence probes would show higher sensitivities with less reaction-time and possess wider applications. In the future,reaction-based fluorescence probes should show efficient development in biological detection and expand practical applications.

Abstract:Though metal ions like copper, iron, zinc, etc. are essential, but their dyshomeostasis is associated with several disorders. Therefore, fast, sensitive, and cost-effective monitoring of these cations will have a significant impact. Many recently reported small organic molecules were able to detect a specific metal ion because of certain variations in the electron/charge transfer processes occurring in those molecules after binding with metal ions. In this context, Schiff base molecules were widely used as fluorescence turn-on/turn-off probes for the detection of metal ions like Al 3+ , Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ , Fe 3+ , Ag + , heavy metal ions, etc. In this article, we have reviewed the recent developments in fluorimetric chemosensing of metal ions by Schiff bases based on the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) process. A variety of examples have been discussed in which PET was used as a cation recognition mechanism. Particular focus is placed on the molecular probes used for sensing, including their design, selectivity, sensitivity, and in some cases their potential bioimaging applications.

Abstract:The development of new fluorescent turn-on probes has attracted much attention due to the selective and sensitive detection of biologically important metal ions and their applicability in live cell imaging. Since it has been established that fluorescent probes work well in cellular media, many intriguing investigations are under progress. It is desirable to use quick and easy methods for detecting metal ions in biological and environmental systems, and the probes should provide enhanced photophysical properties with sensitivity, selectivity, a low detection threshold, a quick response time, operational simplicity, and real-time analysis, which are non-lethal to living cells, demanding extensive research. There are several novel fluorescent turn-on probes reported thus far; however, Schiff base-based probes have gained particular interest because of their intriguing optical characteristics, great thermal stability, and ease of synthesis. Moreover, they stand out in the bioactive domain as promising fluorescent chemosensors for biologically prominent metal cations and are well known for their low cytotoxicity. Schiff bases exhibit strong luminescence properties in synergistic systems with many ideal fluorophores such as quinoline, anthracene, coumarin, fluorescein, rhodamine, boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY), dansyl, and naphthalimide. As a result, these synthetically flexible compounds with coordination sites such as N and O can rigidly bind to a wide range of transition metal ions with turn-on fluorescence properties. This review compiles the detailed sensing properties of numerous Schiff base-based probes for biologically important metal cations such as Fe( II ), Zn( II ), Cu( II ), Ni( II ), Co( II ), Ag( I ), Au( III ), Hg( II ), Cd( II ) and Pd( II ) via a fluorescence turn-on mechanism. Further, it covers the detection approaches elucidating the optoelectronic characteristics as well as their application in cellular imaging, which will provide a better understanding of the accumulation of metal ions in organelles.

Abstract:2,6-Diformyl-4-methylphenol fluorophore derived Schiff base sensors detect metal ions such as Zn2+, Al3+, Hg2+, Cd2+, Sn2+ and Cu2+ with high sensitivity and selectivity through changes in fluorescence intensity based on CHEF, ICT, FRET, ESIPT, C=N isomerization and PET mechanism. Several anions viz. HPO4 2–, H2PO4 –, PO4 3–, AsO3 3–, H2AsO4 –, AsO2 –, PPi (pyrophosphate), I–, F– and N3 – were also detected through intermolecular hydrogen bonding (between sensor and anion) based on TICT, PET, CHEF, ESIPT and aggregation induced emission mechanism. Selectivity and sensitivity for these metal ions and anions were achieved by introducing various amines to core fluorophore 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol. Majority of these fluorescent sensors were Zn2+ ion selective. Due to the filled d10 electronic configuration of Zn2+ ion usually does not show deactivation of excited state via any electron or energy transfer mechanisms. Both solvent dependent and independent ten multi-ion selective sensors are found. This review will consolidate on 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol derived Schiff base fluorescent chemosensors.

Abstract:Rhodamine Schiff bases as fluorescent chemo-sensors, fluorogenic cation sensors, is scientifically exigent work. Rhodamine Schiff base derivatives have gained attention due to their structural variability. The combination of donor and acceptor groups with delocalized Ï€ -orbital results in excellent fluorescent properties due to intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and opening of spirolactam ring of Rhodamine moiety. In this review, we summarize information about Rhodamine Schiff bases sensors reported over the past two decades (2002â€“2022). We focused on the design, synthesis, and sensing mechanism (ON/OFF, OFF/ON, and ON-OFF-OFF) of these sensors for Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ metal ions, as well as their practical applications. We also examined how the photophysical properties of these sensors change when they coordinate with the metal ions, resulting in changes in the typical sensing behaviour, such as a hypochromic/hyperchromic or hypsochromic/bathochromic shift. We anticipate that this review will provide a fundamental framework for researchers to further investigate Rhodamine Schiff-based sensors.

Abstract:The recognition and sensing of the biologically and environmentally important metal ions has emerged as a significant goal in the field of chemical sensors in recent years. Among the various analytical methods, fluorescence has been a powerful tool due to its simplicity, high detection limit and application to bioimaging. This review highlights the fluorescent chemosensors for metal ions, which have been recently developed from our laboratory. This review was categorized by target metal ions, such as Cu2+, Hg2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, Vanadate, Ag+ and Au3+. Abstract:Metal ions play a crucial role in many biochemical processes, and when in a state of scarcity or surplus, they can lead to various diseases. Therefore, the development of a selective, sensitive, cost-effective, and fast-responding sensor to detect metal ions is critical for in vitro medical diagnostics. In recent years, fluorescent sensors have been extensively investigated as potent kits for the effective assessment of metal ions in living systems due to their high sensitivity, selectivity, ability to perform real-time, non-invasive monitoring, and versatility. This review is an overview of recent advances in fluorescent sensors for the detection and imaging of metal ions in biosystems from 2018 to date. Specifically, we discuss their application in detecting essential metal ions and non-essential metal ions for in vitro diagnostics, living cell imaging, and in vivo imaging. Finally, we summarize remaining challenges and offer a future outlook on the above topics.

Abstract:Metal ions participate in numerous essential biological processes in our body. In the external environment, metal ions are present in food, soil, and water. However, the presence of metal ions concentration above the permissible limits may cause hazardous effect on environment and human beings. Therefore, detection of metal ions with high selectivity and sensitivity is important for biological system and in environmental monitoring. In literature, several examples employing Schiff base derivatives or MNPs as optical sensors for metal ions were investigated. However, studies on the development of Schiff base stabilized metal nanoparticles as optical sensors for hazardous metal ions are scanty in the literature. At present, it is essential to be able to construct controlled ultra-small, highly dispersed, stable, and functionalized metal nanoparticles (MNPs) to make them suitable for industrial applications. The production of Schiff base stabilized metal nanoparticles (MNPs) can be achieved easily without demanding experimental requirements. As a result, it provides a simple, quick, and effective approach to create highly efficient catalysts for the treatment of environmental pollutants. Herein, we report Schiff base and organic ligand stabilized metal nanoparticles as potential chemosensors for hazardous metal ions.

Abstract:Fluorescent determinations of analytes have proven to be a powerful method due to their simplicity, low cost, detection limit, rapid photoluminescence response, and applicability to bioimaging. Fluorescence imaging as a powerful tool for monitoring biomolecules within the living systems. Schiff base has been extensively used as strongly absorbing and colorful chromophores in the design of chemosensors. In recent years, Schiff base based fluorescent probes have been developed for the detection of various toxic analytes and imaging of various analytes in biological systems. This review gives an overview of the important fluorescent sensors which are based on Schiff base, their approaches for molecular recognition, and their potential application in bioimaging studies.

Abstract:Toxic cations, including heavy metals, pose significant environmental and health risks, necessitating the development of reliable detection methods. This review investigates the techniques and approaches used to strengthen the sensitivity and selectivity of Schiff base fluorescent chemosensors designed specifically to detect toxic and heavy metal cations. The paper explores a range of strategies, including functional group variations, structural modifications, and the integration of nanomaterials or auxiliary receptors, to amplify the efficiency of these chemosensors. By improving selectivity towards targeted cations and achieving heightened sensitivity and detection limits, consequently, these strategies contribute to the advancement of accurate and efficient detection methods while increasing the range of end-use applications. The findings discussed in this review offer valuable insights into the potential of leveraging Schiff base fluorescent chemosensors for the accurate and reliable detection and monitoring of heavy metal cations in various fields, including environmental monitoring, biomedical research, and industrial safety.

Abstract:Ion detection is crucial for environmental quality, human health, and industry development. Schiff bases and their complexes are widely applied as the probes for ion detection in chemistry, environment, and biology fields. There are many kinds of interesting Schiff bases and their coordination complexes that have been designed and synthesized based on the facile synthesis. Recently, Schiff base chemistry has intercrossed with nanomaterials toward wide applications. Nanomaterials are characterized by their sizes in the range of several nanometers to several hundreds of nanometers and then with large specific surface area. They have unusual properties such as mechanical property, optical property, and catalytic property, which are usually not active for their bulk materials. The development of new nanomaterials has dramatically increased in the past two decades, especially the hybridization of inorganic nanomaterials with organic functional species. Schiff base is a very famous class of organic molecules with diversity structures and properties. The remarkable point is that they are synthesized facilely. In this review, the principles and methods of Schiff base preparation have been scanned briefly. Then nanomaterials functionalized by Schiff base to achieve efficient, rapid, and sensitive recognition of ions were elaborated. The types of nanomaterials are included the metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) constructed by Schiff base ligands with nanosized pores and surface modification of nanoparticles (NPs) with Schiff bases, which can not only retain the advantages of the original nanomaterials but also improve the ability of ion-specific recognition. The development of colorimetric, fluorescence, and electrochemical sensors based on Schiff base nanomaterials for ion detection in recent years was carefully summarized as well. It should be mentioned that the types of ions in this review are mainly metal ions. Finally, the challenges in the future in this field have been proposed.

Abstract:Metal ions are ubiquitous elements within our environments. Their excessive accumulation poses a great threat to human health. With the development of biology and bioanalytical chemistry, the role played by metal ions in many biological and chemical processes is revealed. Since trace amounts of metal ions can lead to essential influences, there is a growing demand for the study of highly sensitive and selective sensors. Among them, functional nucleic acid (FNA)-based fluorescent probes are proposed as ideal options. The programmability of FNA is constantly integrated with various kinds of fluorophores and strategies for efficient sensing assays. However, a comprehensive review of their advancements in medical and chemical areas is still needed. This review aims to summarize the FNA-based fluorescent methods for the detection and imaging of various metal ions. We focus on the unique properties of metal ions and versatile design strategies. In principle, each signaling strategy can be employed for different FNA-based sensors. Besides, the applications of DNA-templated nanomaterials, conformation-specific fluorophores and isothermal amplification are discussed. This comprehensive review can inspire more advanced fluorescent methods for metal ion sensing and promote the development of FNA for biomedical applications.

Abstract:The recognition and detection of metal ions present in biological and environmental samples have attracted great attention in recent years. Various analytical techniques are used to detect metal ions. Among these, the fluorescence technique is among the emerging methods because of its simplicity, selectivity, and applicability to bioimaging. Thus, this review particularly explores paper-based fluorescence chemosensors involved in metal ion detection. Significantly, the first section addresses relevant research on metal ion detection involving various techniques. In the second section, several sensing strategies such as photoinduced electron transfer, fluorescence resonance energy transfer, intramolecular charge transfer, chelation enhanced fluorescence, excited-state intramolecular proton transfer, and aggregation-induced emission for the detection of target metal ions (aluminum, copper, iron, lead, mercury, and zinc) are investigated. The third section particularly discusses the role of fluorescence sensor materials (e.g., fluorescein, rhodamine, naphthalimide, BODIPY, carbon dots, quantum dots) involved in the detection processes and their advantages and limitations. Overall, this article reviews 90 research articles on paper-based fluorescence chemosensors for metal ion detection published until 2021.

Abstract:Two new highly fluorescent Schiff bases were synthesized and characterized using spectral and DFT studies. Their metal ion detection potential was analysed using absorption and emission methods. The metal ion sensing property was applied in bioimaging techniques for HeLa cells. Both compounds were found to have appreciable and remarkable antimicrobial activity. Two new Schiff bases were synthesized from 1‐(2,4‐dihydroxyphenyl)ethanone and pyridine derivatives. Both compounds were characterized using infrared, UV–Vis., 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectral studies. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed for both the Schiff bases with 6‐31G(d, p) as the basis set. Vibrational frequencies calculated using the theoretical method were in good agreement with the experimental values. Both the Schiff bases were highly fluorescent in nature. The cation‐recognizing profile of the compounds was investigated in aqueous methanol medium. The Schiff base 4‐(1‐(pyridin‐4‐ylimino)ethyl)benzene‐1,3‐diol (PYEB) was found to interact with Fe(III) and Cu(II) ions, whereas the Schiff base 4,4′‐((pyridine‐2,3‐diylbis(azanylylidene))bis(ethan‐1‐yl‐1‐ylidene))bis(benzene‐1,3‐diol) (PDEB) was found to detect Cu(II) ions. The mechanism of recognition was established as combined excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT)–chelation‐enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) effect and chelation‐enhanced quenching (CHEQ) process for the detection of Fe(III) and Cu(II) ions, respectively. The stability constant of the metal complexes formed during the sensing process was determined. The limit of detection for Fe(III) and Cu(II) ions with respect to Schiff base PYEB was found to be 1.64 × 10−6 and 2.16 × 10−7 M, respectively. With respect to Schiff base PDEB, the limit of detection for Cu(II) ion was found to be 4.54 × 10−4 M. The Cu(II) ion sensing property of the Schiff base PDEB was applied in bioimaging studies for the detection of HeLa cells.

Abstract:Heavy metal hazardous and enduring characteristics present a noteworthy risk to both human well‐being and the ecosystem. Heavy metal level monitoring requires accurate and dependable detection techniques. This review emphasizes the requirement for sophisticated detection methods that can address the issues like sensitivity, selectivity, accuracy cost, ease of use of heavy metal ion and allow for more accurate and trustworthy monitoring using organic moiety. It offers a thorough overview of cutting‐edge organic moiety‐based heavy metal detection technique. It primarily discusses four different types of substituted core structures, including coumarin, porphyrin, Schiff bases, and terpyridine, along with their mechanisms, methods, detection limits, and appropriate metal bindings. These moieties exhibit strong coordination with heavy metal ions because of their distinct structural characteristics. They produce stable complexes with complicated ligand‐metal interactions that are useful in a variety of applications, including sensing and catalysis. Each probe was chosen based on its propensity or capacity to identify important analytes in practical applications. To increase the effectiveness and productivity of fluorescence sensing, researchers have recently been working to create new fluorescence chemosensors that can identify many ions at once.

Abstract:The abnormal concentration of the metal ions in the environment threatens the health of Earth and human beings. At present, many methods have been employed to detect metal ions. Among this, the fluorescent sensor array based on pattern recognition has aroused tremendous attention. Unlike traditional “lock-key” type fluorescent probes, the sensor array can accomplish the detection of various metal ions simultaneously. Meanwhile, it has significant advantages such as excellent sensitivity, tunable emission range and high-throughput analysis. In this review, the fluorescent sensor arrays for metal ions detection over the last few years will be introduced. The analytical performances and the detection scopes of the arrays are discussed, as well as the approaches to realizing the high-accuracy discrimination and high-sensitivity detection.
