A Molecular Dynamics Simulation on Self-Healing Behavior Based on Disulfide Bond Exchange Reactions

Abstract:The self-healing polymers based on dynamic covalent bonds or non-covalent interactions have been widely reported in experiments. However, the self-healing theory and mechanism still need to be explored further. In this paper, molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the self-healing mechanism based on disulfide bond exchange reactions at the atomic scale. The microstructures of sample during self-healing process are tracked, and the mechanical properties varying with healing time are examined by uniaxial tension tests. In addition, the effect of crosslink density on the self-healing efficiency and mechanical properties is investigated. The results reveal that the high crosslink density has a positive effect on the mechanical properties and a negative effect on the mobility of molecular chains. The effect of healing time on healing efficiency is also studied, which exhibits the same tendency as the experimental results. Finally, the stress relaxation test is simulated to study the dynamic feature of exchangeable disulfide bonds. The results indicate that the system with shorter stress relaxation time has higher healing efficiency.

Abstract:Replicating nacre's multiscale architecture represents a promising approach to design artificial materials with outstanding rigidity and toughness. It is highly desirable yet challenging to incorporate self-healing and shape-programming capabilities into nacre-mimetic composites due to their rigidity and high filler content. Here, we report such a composite obtained by infiltrating a thermally switchable Diels-Alder network polymer into a lamellar scaffold of alumina. The chemical bond switchability and the physical confinement by the filler endows the composite with sufficient molecular mobility without compromising its thermal dimension stability. Consequently, our composite is capable of self-healing internal damages. Additionally, in contrast to the intractable planar shape of other artificial nacres, precise control of the polymer chain dynamics allows the shape of our composite to be programmed permanently via plasticity and temporarily via shape memory effect. Our approach paves a new way for designing durable multifunctional bioinspired structural materials.

Abstract:High‐performance intelligent materials with unique stimulus‐responsive properties are highly desired in the future as the rapid development of intelligent systems for Internet‐of‐Things applications. During their long service life, the irregularity in external stimuli and repetitive motions always result in unavoidable permanent damages, where the self‐healing ability inspired by skin is indispensable and highly attractive. However, the introduction of supramolecular networks to achieve self‐healing ability based on reversible dynamic noncovalent bonds usually leads to relatively low strength, while the conflict between high mechanical properties and high self‐healing efficiency is still a great challenge. Moreover, the lack of efficient interfacial interaction between functional layer and self‐healable polymer matrix leads to a permanent function loss during the healing of matrix. Herein, a brief overview of self‐healable sensors and actuators based on recent strategies including multiple noncovalent interactions, covalent–noncovalent interactions, and interfacial supramolecular crosslinking is presented. The advantages and applications of high‐performance self‐healable sensors and actuators enabled by interfacial supramolecular crosslinking are discussed emphatically, and the conclusions and outlooks of self‐healable intelligent materials are presented.

Abstract:Design and preparation of organic materials having the ability to automatically restore their mechanical and physical properties are of great importance because of the extensive application ranging from aerospace components to microcircuitry, where the accessibility is highly limited and the reparability of materials is lower. The self-healing behavior is actually a dynamic property of material, resembling what is possessed by nature living systems. Therefore, fabrication of most self-healing materials is actually inspired by nature. This tutorial review focuses on the basic chemical mechanisms that have been successfully adopted in designing self-healing organic materials. It specially covers recent development in the design of materials with durable, easy repairable or self-healing superhydrophobic surfaces and coatings.

In this review, we provide an overview of recent advances in materials with self-healing properties, encompassing polymers, ceramics, metals, and composites. We outline future research directions and potential applications of self-healing materials (SHMs) in diverse fields. This review aims to provide insights into the current state-of-the-art in SHM research and guide future efforts towards the development of innovative and sustainable materials with enhanced self-repair capabilities. Each material type showcases unique self-repair mechanisms tailored to address specific challenges. Furthermore, this review investigates crack healing processes, shedding light on the latest developments in this critical aspect of self-healing materials. Through an extensive exploration of these topics, this review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current landscape and future directions in self-healing materials research.
Prolonged in situ self-healing in structural composites via thermo-reversible entanglement

Abstract:Natural processes continuously degrade a material's performance throughout its life cycle. An emerging class of synthetic self-healing polymers and composites possess property-retaining functions with the promise of longer lifetimes. But sustained in-service repair of structural fiber-reinforced composites remains unfulfilled due to material heterogeneity and thermodynamic barriers in commonly cross-linked polymer-matrix constituents. Overcoming these inherent challenges for mechanical self-recovery is vital to extend in-service operation and attain widespread adoption of such bioinspired structural materials. Here we transcend existing obstacles and report a fiber-composite capable of minute-scale and prolonged in situ healing - 100 cycles: an order of magnitude higher than prior studies. By 3D printing a mendable thermoplastic onto woven glass/carbon fiber reinforcement and co-laminating with electrically resistive heater interlayers, we achieve in situ thermal remending of internal delamination via dynamic bond re-association. Full fracture recovery occurs below the glass-transition temperature of the thermoset epoxy-matrix composite, thus preserving stiffness during and after repair. A discovery of chemically driven improvement in thermal remending of glass- over carbon-fiber composites is also revealed. The marked lifetime extension offered by this self-healing strategy mitigates costly maintenance, facilitates repair of difficult-to-access structures (e.g., wind-turbine blades), and reduces part replacement, thereby benefiting economy and environment.

Abstract:Abstract:: The most intriguing area of scientific study and engineering applications is to synthetize materials that can autonomously heal damage similar to biological tissues. Since the concept of self-healing materials was established, several variations of self-healing polymer materials have been developed based on distinct healing techniques. This review outlines the most recent breakthroughs in self-healing polymers and utilizes the opportunity to categories the descriptions of self-healing technologies in the literatures according to extrinsic and intrinsic routes (noncovalent bonds, physical interaction, and covalent bonds). The major focus is on the routes and strategies used to generate self-healing polymer materials. In addition, the strengths and weaknesses of polymer materials with different self-healing routes and strategies in terms of mechanical and self-healing properties were summarized. Furthermore, we also reviewed the progress of the development from a single selfhealing mechanism to multiple self-healing mechanisms to achieve balanced comprehensive performance. Finally, the future trajectory of self-healing polymers is envisioned.

Abstract:Amid pressing global challenges such as energy crises and climate change, intrinsic self-healing materials featuring inherent sustainability have gained significant attention over the past two decades. Most developed conventional intrinsic self-healing approaches rely on external stimuli, which restricts their practical applications. Consequently, there has been a recent surge in research attention towards room-temperature intrinsic self-healing materials. This review systematically summarizes the research progress in this field. Firstly, three main room-temperature self-healing mechanisms are introduced, including dynamic non-covalent bonds, dynamic covalent bonds, and synergistic multiple dynamic bonds. Then, the latest applications of room-temperature intrinsic self-healing materials in fields such as coatings, soft electronics, energy-storage devices, biomaterials, and construction materials, are highlighted. Finally, an outlook on the future research directions in this cutting-edge field is offered, aiming to provide valuable insights for the design of room-temperature intrinsic self-healing materials.

Abstract:The realm of self-healing materials integrates chemical and physical mechanisms that prevent wear and fracturing and extend the operational lifetime. Unlike the favorable rheology of amorphous soft materials that facilitates efficient contact between fragments, the efficiency of recovery of atomistically ordered materials is restricted by slower interfacial mass transport and the need for ideal physical alignment, which limits their real-world application. We report drastic enhancements in efficiency and recovery time in the self-healing of anilinium bromide, challenging these limitations. Crystals of this material recovered up to 49% within seconds and up to 95% after 100 min via ferroelastic detwinning. The spatial evolution of strain during cracking and healing was measured in real time using digital image correlation. Favorable alignment and strong ionic bonding across the interface of partially fractured crystals facilitate self-healing. This study elevates organic crystals close to the best-in-class self-healing polymers and sets an approach for durable crystal-based optoelectronics.

Abstract:Abstract Self-healing materials have attracted attention due to their ability to regain their structure and function after damage. In recent years, significant progress has been made in achieving various functions through supramolecular chemistry. This review describes an overview of the strategies used to prepare self-healing and self-restoring materials utilizing reversible and movable crosslinks. Reversible crosslinks, consisting of noncovalent bonds, can reversibly undergo repeated cleavage and reformation. Therefore, self-healing can be achieved by effectively regenerating reversible crosslinks between polymeric chains. Reversible crosslinks exploit many kinds of dynamic covalent bonds and noncovalent bonds, such as hydrogen bonds, metal coordination bonds, ionic interactions, π–π stacking, van der Waals forces, and hydrophobic interactions. Movable crosslinks exhibit self-restoring properties. Self-restoring materials can regain their original shape and mechanical properties after a cycle of loading and unloading external stress. Movable crosslinks consist of polymer chains that penetrate macrocyclic units and have self-restoring properties due to their sliding motion along the polymeric chains. In addition, multiple reversible cross-links produce synergistic effects to simultaneously achieve high toughness and effective self-healing. We believe that self-healing and self-restoring materials will play a substantial role in realizing a sustainable society.

Abstract:Self-healing materials capable of restoring functionality in response to damage are expected to gain prolonged service lifespan. Yet the ability to repair damage of diverse length scales which is demanded for the survival of highly capricious and uncontrolled damage modes has not been demonstrated with current self-healing approaches. Herein the repeatable self-healing of multiscale damage ranging from nanometer to millimeter is achieved in thermoplastic polymers through defect-targeted heating and welding. The key to the ability to deal with multiscale damage is the automatic and targeted transport and assembly of superparamagnetic nanoparticles toward the defect site. This allows the concentrated nanoparticles to deliver a high heating power under an oscillating magnetic field and locally fuse the matrix, whereas the overall dimensional integrity of the material is well preserved. Moreover, as the polymer melt drives progressively into the open volume of the crack, the nanoparticles keep migrating with the edge of the crack until the fractured portions are united. The cracking-healing cycle can be repeated 100 times with a constantly high healing efficiency above 95%. This work sheds light on the new design of self-healing materials where the ability to deal with complex damage modes represents a key merit to prompt real-world applications.

Abstract:The material would inevitably suffer a series of damages in operation, including cracks, piercing and delamination, which would lead to a degradation of performance and even cause safety problems. Self-healing materials could partially or completely heal themselves after being damaged, so that the performance of materials could be restored to the original state. In this review, we focus on the self-healing materials in mechanicals, performances and features. We classified the self-healing materials based on the two strategies including extrinsic mechanism and intrinsic mechanism. The main difference between the two strategies is whether the healing agent is added during the self-healing process. The principles, preparation methods and self-healing properties of microcapsule technology, hollow fiber technology and microvascular technology based on extrinsic mechanism are reviewed. The mechanical properties and self-healing properties of intrinsic self-healing materials are discussed based on non-covalent bond interaction and covalent bond interaction. Several typical instances to outline the applications of self-healing materials, including wearable sensors, supercapacitors, batteries, and sensors, are provided. Finally, the future development and outlook of self-healing materials were discussed.

Optically Healable Supramolecular Polymers

Abstract:Smart materials with an in-built ability to repair damage caused by normal wear and tear could prove useful in a wide range of applications. Most healable polymer-based materials so far developed require heating of the damaged area. But Burnworth et al. have now produced materials — in the form of polymer strands linked through metal complexes — that can be mended through exposure to light. The metal complexes in these materials can absorb ultraviolet light that is then converted into heat, which temporarily unlinks the polymer strands for quick and efficient defect healing. In principle, healing can take place in situ and while under load. Polymers with the ability to repair themselves after sustaining damage could extend the lifetimes of materials used in many applications1. Most approaches to healable materials require heating the damaged area2,3,4. Here we present metallosupramolecular polymers that can be mended through exposure to light. They consist of telechelic, rubbery, low-molecular-mass polymers with ligand end groups that are non-covalently linked through metal-ion binding. On exposure to ultraviolet light, the metal–ligand motifs are electronically excited and the absorbed energy is converted into heat. This causes temporary disengagement of the metal–ligand motifs and a concomitant reversible decrease in the polymers’ molecular mass and viscosity5, thereby allowing quick and efficient defect healing. Light can be applied locally to a damage site, so objects can in principle be healed under load. We anticipate that this approach to healable materials, based on supramolecular polymers and a light–heat conversion step, can be applied to a wide range of supramolecular materials that use different chemistries.
A Versatile Microporous Design toward Toughened yet Softened Self‐Healing Materials

Abstract:A closed microporous design is demonstrated to transform soft and weak into soft yet ultra‐tough self‐healing materials. This approach not only achieves unprecedented improvements in crack propagation resistance and centimeter‐scale fractocohesive lengths, but also enhances mechanical softness while preserving self‐healing kinetics, which is crucial for fully exploiting the potential of soft yet tough self‐healing materials in stretchable electronics. Realizing the full potential of self‐healing materials in stretchable electronics necessitates not only low modulus to enable high adaptivity, but also high toughness to resist crack propagation. However, existing toughening strategies for soft self‐healing materials have only modestly improves mechanical dissipation near the crack tip (ГD), and invariably compromise the material's inherent softness and autonomous healing capabilities. Here, a synthetic microporous architecture is demonstrated that unprecedently toughens and softens self‐healing materials without impacting their intrinsic self‐healing kinetics. This microporous structure spreads energy dissipation across the entire material through a bran‐new dissipative mode of adaptable crack movement (ГA), which substantially increases the fracture toughness by 31.6 times, from 3.19 to 100.86 kJ m−2, and the fractocohesive length by 20.7 times, from 0.59 mm to 12.24 mm. This combination of unprecedented fracture toughness (100.86 kJ m−2) and centimeter‐scale fractocohesive length (1.23 cm) surpasses all previous records for synthetic soft self‐healing materials and even exceeds those of light alloys. Coupled with significantly enhanced softness (0.43 MPa) and nearly perfect autonomous self‐healing efficiency (≈100%), this robust material is ideal for constructing durable kirigami electronics for wearable devices.

Room‐Temperature Self‐Healing Soft Composite Network with Unprecedented Crack Propagation Resistance Enabled by Supramolecular Assembled Lamellar Structure

Abstract:Soft self‐healing materials are compelling candidates for stretchable devices because of their excellent compliance, extensibility, and self‐restorability. However, most existing soft self‐healing polymers suffer from crack propagation and irreversible fatigue failure due to easy breakage of their dynamic amorphous low‐energy polymer networks. Herein, inspired by distinct structure‐property relationship of biological tissues, we propose a supramolecular interfacial assembly strategy of preparing soft self‐healing composites with unprecedented crack propagation resistance by structurally engineering preferentially‐aligned lamellar structures within dynamic and super‐stretchable poly(urea‐ureathane) matrixes (which can be elongated to 24750× its original length). Such a design affords world‐record fracture energy (501.6 kJ m−2), ultra‐high fatigue threshold (4064.1 J m−2), and outstanding elastic restorability (dimensional recovery from 13 times elongation), and preserving low modulus (1.2 MPa), high stretchability (3200%), high room‐temperature self‐healing efficiency (97%). Thereby, the resultant composite represents the best of its kind and even surpasses most natural biological tissues. The lamellar MXene (2D transition metal carbide/carbonitride) structure also leads to a relatively high in‐plane thermal conductivity, enabling composite as stretchable thermo‐conductive skins applied in joints of robotics to enable thermal dissipation. The present work illustrates a viable approach how autonomous self‐healing, crack tolerance and fatigue resistance can be merged in future material design. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:The unique properties of self-healing materials hold great potential in the field of biomedical engineering. Although previous studies have focused on the design and synthesis of self-healing materials, their application in in vivo settings remains limited. Here, we design a series of biodegradable and biocompatible self-healing elastomers (SHEs) with tunable mechanical properties, and apply them to various disease models in vivo, in order to test their reparative potential in multiple tissues and at physiological conditions. We validate the effectiveness of SHEs as promising therapies for aortic aneurysm, nerve coaptation and bone immobilization in three animal models. The data presented here support the translation potential of SHEs in diverse settings, and pave the way for the development of self-healing materials in clinical contexts. The unique properties of self-healing materials hold great potential in the field of biomedical engineering. Self-Healable Polymer Nanocomposites Capable of Simultaneously Recovering Multiple Functionalities

Abstract:The continuous evolution toward electronics with high power densities and integrated circuits with smaller feature sizes and faster speeds places high demands on a set of material properties, namely, the electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of polymer dielectrics. Herein, a supramolecular approach is described to self‐healable polymer nanocomposites that are mechanically robust and capable of restoring simultaneously structural, electrical, dielectric, and thermal transport properties after multiple fractures. With the incorporation of surface‐functionalized boron nitride nanosheets, the polymer nanocomposites exhibit many desirable features as dielectric materials such as higher breakdown strength, larger electrical resistivity, improved thermal conductivity, greater mechanical strength, and much stabilized dielectric properties when compared to the pristine polymer. It is found that the recovery condition has remained the same during sequential cycles of cutting and healing, therefore suggesting no aging of the polymer nanocomposites with mechanical breakdown. Moreover, moisture has a minimal effect on the healing and dielectric properties of the polymer nanocomposites, which is in stark contrast to what is typically observed in the hydrogen‐bonded supramolecular structures.

Abstract:Self‐healing is a natural characteristic observed in organisms capable of repairing themselves following mechanical damage. Inspired by this attractive feature, researchers have developed self‐healing polymers with various functionalities to create advanced self‐healing devices that offer substantially enhanced durability and longevity. This paper provides an overview of self‐healing polymers and their assessment methods, followed by the design strategy for electrically functional self‐healing polymers, with a particular focus on the latest research findings. Finally, the paper discusses future prospects and challenges in this field.
