Abstract:Developing novel olefin thermoplastic elastomers (TPE-Os) that outperform those with well-defined block or grafted chain structures is both highly attractive and challenging. Here, we report the preparation of high-performance TPE-Os in a combinatorial way. Semicrystalline ethylene/1-octene/diene copolymers with pendant vinyl groups and crystalline polyethylene macromers with terminal double bonds are synthesized, and they are dynamically linked with a dithiol-based cross-linker containing a boronic ester bond to form a new TPE-O. Due to the synergy between physical crystallization and dynamic cross-linking, it exhibits a significantly increased Young's modulus (E), elongation at break (epsilon), ultimate strength (sigma), and tensile toughness (U-T) of up to 27.2 +/- 3.8 MPa, 902 +/- 28%, 26.7 +/- 1.1 MPa, and 120.1 +/- 9.5 MJ center dot m(-3), respectively, which are among the highest levels of the dynamically cross-linked elastomers and traditional well-defined TPE-Os. It also has good elasticity with a 10-cycle elastic recovery ratio of up to 71.4%; a high melting point of nearly 123.8 degree celsius and the sigma can even maintain 0.14-0.42 MPa at 200 degree celsius. The new TPE-O also offers high reprocessing performance with a recovery ratio of 113.2% for E, 98.5% for epsilon, 95.8% for sigma, and 92.5% for U-T. We believe that our study will facilitate the development of next-generation TPE-Os with higher performance.

Abstract:The effects of the cyclic molecules within polyrotaxanes moving over axial molecules serving as cross-linking points in a polymeric network preclude observation of the cyclic effects in polymer networks composed of conventional cross-linking agents. As a result, polymer networks with movable cross-linking points behave more gently and stretch better than conventional polymer networks. These polymer networks can be composed of various polymers when using cross-linkers obtained by modifying the vinyl groups on the polyrotaxanes. In this study, the effects of the polyrotaxane cross-linker concentration and solvent content on elastomer preparation were investigated to obtain elastomers with high toughnesses due to the properties of the polyrotaxane cross-linking agent. If elastomers were prepared in a state in which the cyclic effect of the polyrotaxane was easily expressed by the concentration of the polyrotaxane cross-linker and the amount of solvent, the elastomers obtained elongated more and were tougher than elastomers made from conventional cross-linkers.

Abstract:Elastomers with excellent mechanical properties are in substantial demand for various applications, but there is always a tradeoff between their mechanical strength and stretchability. For example, partially replacing strong covalent crosslinking by weak sacrificial bonds can enhance the stretchability but also usually decreases the mechanical strength. To surmount this inherent tradeoff, a supramolecular strategy of introducing a zipper-like sliding-ring mechanism in a hydrogen-bond-crosslinked polyurethane network is proposed. A very small amount (0.5 mol%) of an external additive (pseudo[2]rotaxane crosslinker) can dramatically increase both the mechanical strength and elongation of this polyurethane network by nearly one order of magnitude. Based on the investigation of the relationship between molecular structure and mechanical properties, this enhancement is attributable to a unique molecular-level zipper-like ring-sliding motion, which efficiently dissipates mechanical work in the solvent-free network. This research not only provides a distinct and general strategy for the construction of high-performance elastomers but also paves the way for the practical application of artificial molecular machines toward solvent-free polyurethane networks.

Abstract:The extended and contracted conformations of [c2] daisy chain rotaxanes were introduced in mechano-fluorophoric polyurethane (PU) scaffolds via step-growth polymerizations to obtain distinct mechanical and optical features upon external forces. Particularly, the inherent ductile and stretchable capabilities along with notable toughnesses of PU films containing very low contents of [c2] daisy chain moieties with long-range sliding motions were obviously improved. Furthermore, appealing Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) behaviors with the optimum energy transfer efficiency ca. 26.02% between blue-emitting tetraphenylethylene (TPE) and yellow-orange-emitting rhodamine derivatives could be acquired in the PU film under tensile conditions, which could be assigned to the incorporation of bi-fluorophoric daisy chain rotaxane into PU frameworks to gain reversible dual fluorescence switching behaviors upon stretching and relaxation processes. Additionally, the stretching deformations of PU films were inspected by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and FTIR techniques for the verification of correlated morphological properties of stretching states in the oriented daisy chain rotaxane-based PU films. Interestingly, impressive shape recovery and reversible ratiometric mechano-fluorophoric fluorescence switching properties of [c2] daisy chain rotaxane-based PU films could be attained upon heating, suggesting potential applications of PU films comprising artificial molecular muscles with glorious mechanical and optical behaviors in advanced polymer networks.

Abstract:High-performance elastomers have gained significant interest because of their wide applications in industry and our daily life. However, it remains a great challenge to fabricate elastomers simultaneously integrating ultra-high mechanical strength, toughness, and excellent healing and recycling capacities. In this study, ultra-strong, healable, and recyclable elastomers are fabricated by dynamically cross-linking copolymers composed of rigid polyimide (PI) segments and soft poly(urea-urethane) (PUU) segments with hydrogen bonds. The elastomers, which are denoted as PIPUU, have a record-high tensile strength of ≈142 MPa and an extremely high toughness of ≈527 MJ m-3 . The structure of the PIPUU elastomer contains hydrogen-bond-cross-linked elastic matrix and homogenously dispersed rigid nanostructures. The rigid PI segments self-assemble to generate phase-separated nanostructures that serve as nanofillers to significantly strengthen the elastomers. Meanwhile, the elastic matrix is composed of soft PUU segments cross-linked with reversible hydrogen bonds, which largely enhance the strength and toughness of the elastomer. The dynamically cross-linked PIPUU elastomers can be healed and recycled to restore their original mechanical strength. Moreover, because of the excellent mechanical performance and the hydrophobic PI segments, the PIPUU elastomers are scratch-, puncture-, and water-resistant.

Abstract:Current synthetic elastomers suffer from the well‐known trade‐off between toughness and stiffness. By a combination of multiscale experiments and atomistic simulations, a transparent unfilled elastomer with simultaneously enhanced toughness and stiffness is demonstrated. The designed elastomer comprises homogeneous networks with ultrastrong, reversible, and sacrificial octuple hydrogen bonding (HB), which evenly distribute the stress to each polymer chain during loading, thus enhancing stretchability and delaying fracture. Strong HBs and corresponding nanodomains enhance the stiffness by restricting the network mobility, and at the same time improve the toughness by dissipating energy during the transformation between different configurations. In addition, the stiffness mismatch between the hard HB domain and the soft poly(dimethylsiloxane)‐rich phase promotes crack deflection and branching, which can further dissipate energy and alleviate local stress. These cooperative mechanisms endow the elastomer with both high fracture toughness (17016 J m−2) and high Young's modulus (14.7 MPa), circumventing the trade‐off between toughness and stiffness. This work is expected to impact many fields of engineering requiring elastomers with unprecedented mechanical performance.

Abstract:Polyurethane (PU) elastomer has been widely used due to its excellent mechanics, acid and alkali resistance, abrasion resistance, and other properties. However, obtaining simultaneous mechanically strong, flame-retarded, transparent, and efficient self-heal ability of PU elastomer is of great challenge due to the structural design. Here, a phosphorus/nitrogen-containing Oxime chain extender (PSK-2) was introduced into the synthesis of PU elastomers to obtain a transparent, flame-retarded, self-healable, mechanically strong PU elastomers. The PU elastomers exhibited high tensile strength of ~23.3 MPa, breaking strain of ~1693%, good flame retardancy with high LOI of ~29.2%, and UL-94 V1 rating with the addition of 4.67 mmol (mass fraction 1.37 wt%) PSK2. Furthermore, the PUPSK2 elastomer material also had good healing ability up to 60% at room temperature and good transparency of 83.7% at 350–800 nm visible.

Abstract:The mechanical properties of covalent polymer networks often arise from the permanent end-linking or cross-linking of polymer strands, and molecular linkers that break more easily would likely produce materials that require less energy to tear. We report that cyclobutane-based mechanophore cross-linkers that break through force-triggered cycloreversion lead to networks that are up to nine times as tough as conventional analogs. The response is attributed to a combination of long, strong primary polymer strands and cross-linker scission forces that are approximately fivefold smaller than control cross-linkers at the same timescales. The enhanced toughness comes without the hysteresis associated with noncovalent cross-linking, and it is observed in two different acrylate elastomers, in fatigue as well as constant displacement rate tension, and in a gel as well as elastomers.

Abstract:An amorphous and transparent polyurethane/nanocellulose elastomer with excellent self‐healing, self‐reinforcing and toughening performance is built based on the dual dynamic crosslinking strategy of multiple hydrogen and disulfide bonds. The elastomer can be self‐strengthened after multiple hot‐pressing, with tensile strength that increases by 400%, which is attributed to the reconstruction of dual dynamic networks and orientation of highly‐crystallized nanocellulose under stretching. High‐performance elastomers are expected to possess excellent healing and recycling ability, damage resistance in conjunction with high strength and toughness. Herein, a dual dynamic crosslinking strategy is implemented by multiple hydrogen and disulfide bonds to obtain a novel amorphous and transparent polyurethane/nanocellulose elastomer with excellent self‐healing, self‐reinforcing and toughening performance. First, hydrogen bonds are introduced in TEMPO‐oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TCNF) by modification with 2‐ureido‐4[1H]‐pyrimidone (UTCNF), while disulfide bonds (SS) are introduced in the polyurethane (PU) main chain, leading to the formation of dual dynamic cross‐linking networks. The PU‐SS‐UTCNF elastomer can fully self‐heal within 4.0 h at 50 °C. Surprisingly, for the first time, the PU‐SS‐UTCNF elastomer also self‐strengthens and self‐toughens after multiple hot‐pressing, with tensile strength and toughness that increase by up to 401% and 257% compared to original elastomer samples, up to 50.0 MPa and 132.5 MJ m‐3. The self‐strength and self‐toughening effects are attributed to 1) reconstruction of dual dynamic networks that increase the cross‐linking degree during the multiple hot‐pressing processes; 2) multiple hydrogen bonds in the system are beneficial to the orientation of highly crystallized UTCNF, as a replacement of stress‐induced process in deformation under external tensile force.

Abstract:Low activation efficiency of mechanosensitive groups in bulk materials challenges the expansion of practical applications of mechanochemistry. Here, we wish to report a topological approach to address this problem. Assembling dynamic mechanophores in a bottlebrush topology can increase the scission probability and unlock multiple rounds of activation. This concept is materialized via a new ring-opening polymerization reaction of cyclic carbonates followed by cross-linking with thermoplastic polyurethanes. The resulting elastomers, featuring advanced topology at the cross-linking points, display enhanced mechanosensitivity, high mechanical performance, and training-induced self-strengthening behavior without chemical amplification with a second component.

Abstract:The strength and toughness are two trade-off properties of a material, yet Nature can achieve strong and tough materials by introducing sacrificial bonds into a system. Here, we present a four-component multiblock copolymer (mBCP) approach toward strong and tough elastic fibers, by introducing terpyridine moieties into poly(ether ester) mBCP elastomers. After coordination with Fe(II), supramolecular cross-links are formed within the physically cross-linked thermoplastic elastomers. The toughening elastic fibers with a double-cross-linked network structure show high tensile strength (ca. 300 MPa) and toughness (ca. 100 MJ m–3). In addition, they display excellent resilience with enhanced self-healing properties. Abstract:A strong and tough self-healing elastomer is prepared based on double reversible networks consisting of ionic interactions and Diels-Alder (D-A) crosslinks. The elastomer is synthesized through one-pot copolymerization of a pair of oppositely charged monomers and furan functionalized methacrylate (FMA), which is then crosslinked with 1,1'-(Methylenebis(4,1-phenylene))bis(1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione) (BMI) via Diels-Alder (D-A) reaction. The oppositely charged monomers form ionic bonds which can segregate into aggregates with a wide distribution of size. Under heating or external force, the aggregates can dissociate from small to big ones to dissipate amount of energy and endow the materials with high mechanical properties (13 MPa in strength, 480% in stretchability). While the D-A crosslinks act as covalent bonds at room temperature and endow the materials with high elasticity and fast shape recovery ability. These two reversible networks with different dynamics contribute to the multiscale self-healing properties of the elastomer. As a result, the self-healing efficiency of the elastomer is as high as 86%.

Abstract:A major challenge in designing self-healing polymeric materials is to combine robust mechanical properties and high healing efficiency. Herein, we report a kind of transparent, hydrogen-bonded polymer complex elastomers with both good mechanical strength and rapid self-healing capability under ambient conditions. Such elastomers were simply fabricated by in situ photoinitiated random copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and N-acryloyl-6-aminocaproic acid (A6ACA), in the presence of a linear polyethylene oxide (PEO). By evaporating water molecules from the samples via free drying, the dynamical hydrogen bonding between PEO and poly(A6ACA-co-AA) were substantially formed, which endowed the polymer chains to form physically crosslinked three-dimensional polymer network, as well as the topological chain entanglements. The resulting optically transparent elastomers exhibited both good mechanical strengths (at break) as high as 1.73 MPa, and excellent stretchability that could be stretched up to 24 times their initial length, respectively. Comparing with the elastomers based on PAA homopolymer without the A6ACA comonomer and PEO, the introduction of A6ACA as a comonomer afforded complex elastomers with comparable mechanical strength and, more importantly, significantly improved self-healing efficiency even under ambient conditions, probably due to the largely decreased glass transition temperature that facilitated chain mobility and reformation of hydrogen bonds. It is therefore believed that the copolymerization strategy offers a practical method to tune the compositions and to tailor the properties of hydrogen-bonded polymer complexes for engineering elastomers with balanced mechanical and self-healing performance under ambient environment for various applications.

Abstract:While piezoelectric materials are applied in various fields, they generally exhibit poor mechanical toughness. To increase the applicability of these, their mechanical properties need to be improved. In this study, a tough piezoelectric polyrotaxane (PRX) elastomer was developed by blending PRX samples of two different lengths, formed using 10K and 35K poly(ethylene glycol), to align dipole moments for optimization of the piezoelectricity characteristics. The effects of the blending ratio on the crystalline structure of the obtained PRX elastomer were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and transmission electron microscopy. In addition, the ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of the PRX elastomer were evaluated based on its polarization hysteresis loop and voltage generation characteristics, respectively. The PRX elastomer formed by using a ratio of 3:1 (ePR10k7535k25) exhibited a long-range-ordered anisotropic crystalline structure, resulting in a large polarization (Pr) value. As a result, ePR10k7535k25 showed greatly enhanced piezosensitivity against the mechanical vibrations generated by respiratory signals.

Abstract:Improvement of toughness is still a challenge for self-healing materials. Most of self-healing materials difficultly balance the mechanical and self-healing property. Here, a molecular design strategy of copolymer is proposed based on three combinations of reversible imine bond, chain motion and thermosensitive hydrogen bond together. The approach initially forms a co-continuous microphase separation structure and then cross-linked by aromatic imine via esterification reaction and Schiff base reaction, which features efficient self-healing, ultrahigh strength and toughness. The resultant elastomer exhibits a high stress at break (≈3 MPa) and high fracture strain (≈600 %). Additionally, the elastomer can reach 95 % self-healing efficiency after healing at 100 °C for 12 h. Extra reversible imine crosslinking displays a doubly promotion for fracture stress, and unchanging strain as well as 1times increase for self-healing efficiency, compared with merely chain motion and hydrogen bonding. This elastomer can be successfully spun into stretchable, conductive, self-healing filaments with core-shell structure by wet spinning and coating methods. It shows excellent corrosion resistance against NaCl, and conductive and self-healing property after coating by PANI polymer. Abstract:Solvent‐free elastomers, unlike gels, do not suffer from solvent evaporation and leakage in practical applications. However, it is challenging to realize the preparation of high‐toughness (with both high stress and strain) ionic elastomers. Herein, high‐toughness linear poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) elastomers were constructed via supramolecular ionic networks formed by the polymerization of halometallate ionic liquid (IL) monomers, without any chemical crosslinking. The obtained linear PIL elastomers exhibited high strength (16.5 MPa), Young's modulus (157.49 MPa), toughness (130.31 MJ m−3), and high crack propagation insensitivity (fracture energy 243.37 kJ m−2), owing to the enhanced intermolecular non‐covalent interactions of PIL chains. Furthermore, PIL elastomer‐based strain, pressure, and touch sensors have shown high sensitivity. The linear non‐covalent crosslinked network endows the PIL elastomers with self‐healing and recyclable properties, and broad application prospects in the fields of flexible sensor devices, health monitoring, and human‐machine interaction. Abstract:It is a challenge to synthesize materials that possess the properties of biological muscles—strong, elastic and capable of self-healing. Herein we report a network of poly(dimethylsiloxane) polymer chains crosslinked by coordination complexes that combines high stretchability, high dielectric strength, autonomous self-healing and mechanical actuation. The healing process can take place at a temperature as low as −20 °C and is not significantly affected by surface ageing and moisture. The crosslinking complexes used consist of 2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide ligands that coordinate to Fe( III ) centres through three different interactions: a strong pyridyl–iron one, and two weaker carboxamido–iron ones through both the nitrogen and oxygen atoms of the carboxamide groups. As a result, the iron–ligand bonds can readily break and re-form while the iron centres still remain attached to the ligands through the stronger interaction with the pyridyl ring, which enables reversible unfolding and refolding of the chains. We hypothesize that this behaviour supports the high stretchability and self-healing capability of the material.
