Abstract:In this paper, a novel graphene oxide (GO) decorated nanoscale FeS composite (GO/FeS) combining both advantages of GO and FeS was synthesized and tested for the highly efficient scavenging of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. The as- synthesized materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in detail. The results indicated that FeS nanoparticles were effectively decorated onto the surface of GO through - OH, C-O, C=O, and O = C-O functional groups, resulting in larger specific surface area and higher reactivity The nanocomposites displayed an enhanced Cr(VI) scavenging capacity, and the acidic conditions favored the Cr(VI) scavenging by GO/FeS. The kinetics of Cr(VI) scavenging on GO/FeS nanoparticles was in accordance with the pseudo-second order kinetic model, suggesting that chemical interaction is mainly responsible for Cr(VI) scavenging on GO/FeS. Furthermore, the Langmuir model fit the best, and q(max), i.e. the maximum scavenging capacity of Cr(VI) obtained from the Langmuir model reached 138.5 mg/g, Surface sorption and reduction were the dominant scavenging mechanisms for Cr(VI) by GO/FeS. The present study demonstrated the promise of GO/FeS as an effective scavenger for the remediation of Cr(VI) in groundwater environment.

Abstract:Industrial effluents that contain various toxic substances have polluted our water and soil and posed major health issues. Thus, their removal or conversion to non-toxic products is highly crucial and desirable. This work emphasizes the synthesis of sulfur nanoparticles through precipitation method using anionic and cationic surfactants for exploring its catalytic efficiency in the photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium Cr (VI). As-synthesized sulfur nanoparticles (SNPs) were physically characterized by UV-Vis absorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. The SNPs prepared using both surfactants have narrow size distribution with great homogeneity (50–80 nm). Moreover, excellent efficiency for Cr (VI) to Cr (III) reduction was recorded for SNPs. Besides, cytotoxicity analysis against microalgae Picochlorum sp. was analyzed and the SNPs showed no negative effect on algal growth and chlorophyll a concentration. Finally, the SNPs were found to provide excellent sunlight protection. Our results highlight that SNPs have great potential for the treatment of industrial wastewater with greater reproducibility. Moreover, they are equally effective against harmful sun rays and are suitable in different skin care products.

Abstract:Abstract Hexavalent chromium is extremely toxic and increasingly prevalent owing to industrialisation, thereby posing serious human health and environmental risks. Therefore, new approaches for detoxifying high concentrations of Cr (VI) using an ultralow amount of catalyst with high recyclability are increasingly being considered. The catalytic conversion of Cr (VI) into Cr (III) was previously reported; however, it required a large amount of catalyst to reduce a low concentration of Cr (VI); further, pH adjustment and catalyst separation had to be performed, causing issues with large-scale remediation. In this study, an unprecedented eco-friendly and cost-effective method was developed for the synthesis of Pd nanoparticles (PdNPs) with a significantly narrow size distribution of 3–25 nm. PdNPs demonstrated the presence of elemental Pd with the zero oxidation state when analysed by energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The PdNPs could detoxify a high concentration of Cr (VI), without the need to adjust the pH or purify the nanoparticles for reusability. The reusability of the PdNPs for the catalytic conversion of Cr (VI) into Cr (III) was >90% for subsequent cycles without the further addition of formic acid. Thus, the study provides new insights into the catalytic reclamation of Cr (VI) for industrial wastewater treatment.

Green synthesis and characterization of silver and copper nanoparticles and their use as an effective adsorbent for chromium removal and recovery from wastewater

Abstract:Chromium (Cr) is one of the hazardous heavy metals that is naturally carcinogenic and causes various health problems. Metallic nanoparticles such as silver and copper nanoparticles (Ag NPs and Cu NPs) have gained great attention because of their unique chemical, physical, and biological attributes, serving diverse and significant role in various useful and sustainable applications. In the present study, both of these NPs were synthesized by green method in which Azadirachta indica plant extract was used. These nanoparticles were characterized by using advanced instrumental techniques such as Fourier transmission infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope attached with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and elemental mapping. These environmentally friendly nanoparticles were utilized for the batch removal of Cr from the wastewater. For analysis of adsorption behaviour, a range of kinetic isotherm models (Freundlich, Temkin, Dubinin, and Langmuir) and kinetic models (pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order) were used for the Cu-NPs and Ag-NPs. Cu NPs exhibited the highest Cr removal efficiency (96%) within a contact time of 10-15 min, closely followed by Ag NPs which achieved a removal efficiency of 94% under the similar conditions. These optimal outcomes were observed at a sorbent dose of 0.5 g/L for Ag NPs and 0.7 g/L for Cu NPs. After effectively capturing Cr using these nanoparticles, the sorbates were examined through SEM-EDX analysis to observe how much Cr metal was attached to the nanoparticles, potentially for future use. The analysis found that Ag-NPs captured 18% of Cr, while Cu-NPs captured 12% from the aqueous solution. More precise experimental conditions are needed for higher Cr removal from wastewater and determination of the best conditions for industrial-level Cr reuse. Although nanomaterial exhibit high efficiency and selectivity for Cr removal and recovery from wastewater, more research is necessary to optimize their synthesis and performance for industrial-scale applications and develop efficient methods for Cr removal and recovery.
Synergistic effect of Zn-AgIn5S8/CdS Z-scheme heterojunction and S-doped rGO for efficient removal of chromium from contaminated water

Abstract:This study aimed to synthesize a Zn-AgIn5S8/CdS/SrGO nanocomposite for Cr(vi) removal from contaminated water under solar irradiation. To prevent photo corrosion of CdS, a Z-scheme heterojunction was formed between CdS and Zn-AgIn5S8. The introduction of Ag2+ plasmonic materials extended the light absorption range and stabilized the photocatalyst. Further, to improve the catalytic surface area, electrical conductivity, and minimize the rate of electron and hole pair recombination, the Zn-AgIn5S8/CdS Z-scheme heterojunction was loaded onto S-doped rGO. The morphological and structural analysis of the synthesized nanomaterials (NMs) was done using various techniques, including XRD, FT-IR, UV-vis DRS, FESEM, TEM, EDAX, photoluminescence, and Raman spectroscopy. Results revealed that the Zn-AgIn5S8/CdS/SrGO nanocomposite removed 85% of Cr(vi) at an initial concentration of 50 mg L-1 in 180 min when exposed to solar irradiation. The simulated first-order kinetic model fitted to the experimental data for Cr(vi) reduction by the nanocomposite exhibits a high correlation coefficient (R 2 ≥ 0.97) and the K app value for Zn-AgIn5S8/CdS/SrGO (K app = 0.0114 min-1) is around 1.6 times larger than that of bare ZnAgIn5S8. Moreover, Zn-AgIn5S8/CdS/SrGO heterojunctions show excellent reusability up to 4 cycles. Further, the possible photocatalytic mechanism of Cr(vi) reduction has been proposed. Therefore, the Zn-AgIn5S8/CdS/SrGO nanocomposite could serve as an alternative photocatalyst system driven by solar light for Cr(vi) reduction.
Coating Fe3O4 Quantum Dots with Glutamic Acid to Achieve Enhanced Catalysis for Facile and Sensitive Detection of Chromium(vi) in Water.

Abstract:A universal green synthesis approach for Glu-Fe3O4 quantum dots (QDs) with ultrasmall size (similar to 3.3 nm) and enhanced catalysis was demonstrated using glutamic acid (Glu) as a dopant. Abundant carboxylic groups and amino groups on the surfaces with a zeta potential of -6.28 mV resulted in greatly improved environmental stability. The Glu-Fe3O4 QDs exhibited oxidoreductase-like catalytic activity. The steady-state kinetic assays indicated that the QDs had a high binding affinity for the substrate TMB. A facile and sensitive colorimetric platform was developed using the Glu-Fe3O4 QDs for the detection of Cr(vi) in naturally sourced water and waste water, which showed a detection limit of 31.02 nM, much lower than the maximum Cr(vi) level permitted in drinking water by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the industrial water threshold. This universal green synthesis approach and the unique catalytic activity of Fe3O4 QDs open a new horizon in materials chemistry and the development of colorimetric biosensors for environmental protection and public health.
Removal of Hexavalent Chromium from Wastewater by Cu/Fe Bimetallic Nanoparticles

Abstract:Passivation of nanoscale zerovalent iron hinders its efficiency in water treatment, and loading another catalytic metal has been found to improve the efficiency significantly. In this study, Cu/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles were prepared by liquid-phase chemical reduction for removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater. Synthesized bimetallic nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmet-Teller isotherm, and X-ray diffraction. The results showed that Cu loading can significantly enhance the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by 29.3% to 84.0%, and the optimal Cu loading rate was 3% (wt%). The removal efficiency decreased with increasing initial pH and Cr(VI) concentration. The removal of Cr(VI) was better fitted by pseudo-second-order model than pseudo-first-order model. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the Cr(VI) removal was spontaneous and endothermic, and the increase of reaction temperature facilitated the process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that Cr(VI) was completely reduced to Cr(III) and precipitated on the particle surface as hydroxylated Cr(OH)3 and CrxFe1-x(OH)3 coprecipitation. Our work could be beneficial for the application of iron-based nanomaterials in remediation of wastewater.
Green Synthesis of ZnO Nanoparticles for Efficient Cr(VI) Removal and Antioxidant/Microbial Properties

Abstract:Sustainable synthesis of ZnONPs using Syngonium podophyllum leaves extract. These nanoparticles are utilized as biosorbents to remove Cr6+. The study also examines the influence of adsorption variables on the uptake of Cr6+ by ZnONPs. Furthermore, the microbial activity against E. coli, S. aureus, and S. cerevisiae and antioxidant activity of ZnONPs is assessed, marking the first such evaluation. The study focuses on fabrication of a cost‐effective Zinc Oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) adsorbent using Syngonium podophyllum leaves extract to remove hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) from synthetically prepared wastewater. Various spectroscopic techniques, including X‐ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X‐ray analysis (EDX), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), were used to characterize the ZnONPs. Fourier infra‐red spectroscopy (FTIR) detected that various organic compounds like flavonoids, terpenoids, and carboxylic acids acts as stabilizing and capping agent. The batch adsorption study was conducted to investigate the effects of Cr6+ adsorption time, pH, adsorbent concentration, and initial adsorbate concentration. The maximum adsorption capacity was 267.068 mg/g at 313 K. The Freundlich isotherm model was most suitable, indicating multilayer confiscation of Cr6+ on the heterogeneous surface. Chemisorption was identified as the mechanism of sequestration. Thermodynamic studies revealed that Cr6+ removal was spontaneous and feasible, with ΔG° values suggesting predominantly physisorption. Additionally, ZnONPs displayed strong antibacterial activity against S. aureus bacteria, making them a potential alternative to antibiotics. ZnONPs exhibited impressive antioxidant activity. Overall, ZnONPs synthesized through biosynthesis proved to be excellent nano‐sorbents, antioxidants, and biocompatible materials with promising applications in water remediation and healthcare.

Photocatalytic Reduction of Hexavalent Chromium Using Cu3.21Bi4.79S9/g-C3N4 Nanocomposite

Abstract:The photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), to the trivalent species, Cr(III), has continued to inspire the synthesis of novel photocatalysts that are capable of achieving the task of converting Cr(VI) to the less toxic and more useful species. In this study, a novel functionalized graphitic carbon nitride (Cu3.21Bi4.79S9/gC3N4) was synthesized and characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The composite was used for the photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), under visible light irradiation. A 92.77% efficiency of the reduction was achieved at pH 2, using about 10 mg of the photocatalyst and 10 mg/L of the Cr(VI) solution. A pseudo-first-order kinetic study indicated 0.0076 min−1, 0.0286 min−1, and 0.0393 min−1 rate constants for the nanoparticles, pristine gC3N4, and the nanocomposite, respectively. This indicated an enhancement in the rate of reduction by the functionalized gC3N4 by 1.37- and 5.17-fold compared to the pristine gC3N4 and Cu3.21Bi4.79S9, respectively. A study of how the presence of other contaminants including dye (bisphenol A) and heavy-metal ions (Ag(I) and Pb(II)) in the system affects the photocatalytic process showed a reduction in the rate from 0.0393 min−1 to 0.0019 min−1 and 0.0039 min−1, respectively. Finally, the radical scavenging experiments showed that the main active species for the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) are electrons (e−), hydroxyl radicals (·OH−), and superoxide (·O2−). This study shows the potential of functionalized gC3N4 as sustainable materials in the removal of hexavalent Cr from an aqueous solution.

Abstract:Biosynthetic metal sulfides showed great application prospects in the environmental treatment against high-valence metal pollutants. However, the efficiency of biosynthesis, agglomeration during the reaction process, and the formation of the passivation layer during the reduction process were always the important factors restricting its development. This study explored the composition of the culture medium to promote the growth of highly corrosive sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and its metabolism to produce FeS nanoparticles (NPs). The results showed that reducing the carbon source (CS) and adding electron carriers in the culture medium effectively promoted the production of small, dispersed, and loose FeS NPs in cells. At pH = 7, 24 °C and 10 min reaction time, 0.1 g/L FeS NPs produced by SRB under the conditions of 10 % CS with 10 ppm cytochrome c medium could achieve 100 % removal efficiency of 1 mM hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). Under this condition, FeS NPs could be produced by intracellular metabolism in SRB cells, and environmental factors such as pH, metal cations, and Cl- had little effect on the removal of Cr(VI) by this FeS NPs. The surface proteins of FeS NPs significantly enhanced their antioxidant properties. After 7 days of natural environment exposure, the Cr(VI) removal efficiency of FeS NPs was only reduced by 16 % compared with the initial sample. This work provided an in-depth understanding of Cr(VI) removal by SRB biosynthesis of FeS and contributes to the widespread application of FeS in the future.

Abstract:The ever increasing concentration of toxic and carcinogenic hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) in various environmental mediums including water-bodies due to anthropogenic activities with rapid civilization and industrialization have become the major issue throughout the globe during last few decades. Therefore, developing new strategies for the treatment of Cr(VI) contaminated wastewaters are in great demand and have become a topical issue in academia and industry. To date, various techniques have been used for the remediation of Cr(VI) contaminated wastewaters including solvent extraction, adsorption, catalytic reduction, membrane filtration, biological treatment, coagulation, ion exchange and photo-catalytic reduction. Among these methods, the transformation of highly toxic Cr(VI) to benign Cr(III) catalyzed by metallic nanoparticles (M-NPs) with reductant has gained increasing attention in the past few years, and is considered to be an effective approach due to the superior catalytic performance of M-NPs. Thus, it is a timely topic to review this emerging technique for Cr(VI) reduction. Herein, recent development in synthesis of M-NPs based non-supported, supported, mono-, bi- and ternary M-NPs catalysts, their characterization and performance for the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) are reviewed. The role of supporting host to stabilize the M-NPs and leading to enhance the reduction of Cr(VI) are discussed. The Cr(VI) reduction mechanism, kinetics, and factors affecting the kinetics are overviewed to collect the wealthy kinetics data. Finally, the challenges and perspective in Cr(VI) reduction catalyzed by M-NPs are proposed. We believe that this review will assist the researchers who are working to develop novel M-NPs catalysts for the reduction of Cr(VI).

Reduction and removal of Cr(VI) in water using biosynthesized palladium nanoparticles loaded Shewanella oneidensis MR-1

Abstract:In materials science, "green" synthesis has gotten a lot of interest as a reliable, long-lasting, and ecofriendly way to make a variety of materials/nanomaterials, including metal/metal oxide nanomaterials. To accommodate various biological materials, green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles has been used (e.g., bacteria, fungi, algae, and plant extracts). In this work, Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 was used to biosynthesize palladium nanoparticles (bioPd) under aerobic conditions for the Cr(VI) bio-reduction. The size and distribution of bio-Pd are controlled by adjusting the ratio of microbial biomass and palladium precursors. The high cell: Pd ratio has the smallest average particle size of 6.33 ± 1.69 nm. And it has the lowest electrocatalytic potential (-0.132 V) for the oxidation of formic acid, which is 0.158 V lower than commercial Pd/C (5%). Our results revealed that the small size and uniformly distributed extracellular bio-Pd could achieve completely catalytic reduction of 200 mg/L Cr(VI) solution within 10 min, while the commercial Pd/C (5%) need at least 45 min. The bio-Pd materials maintain a high reduction during five cycles. Microorganisms play an important role in the whole process, which can fully disperse palladium nanoparticles, completely reduce Cr(VI), and effectively adsorb Cr(III). This work expands our understanding and provides a reference for the design and development of efficient and green bio-Pd catalysts for environmental pollution control under simple and mild conditions.
Molybdate modified nano zero-valent iron via green synthesis enhances Cr(VI) reduction during their cotransport in water-saturated porous media

Abstract:The in situ remediation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) pollution in groundwater and soil using nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) has garnered great attention. However, Cr(VI) remediation, particularly its reduction remains limited in the subsurface due to the poor migration of nZVI materials to contaminated sites. Herein, we successfully prepared a series of Mo/nZVI@GT materials with varying Mo/Fe synthesis molar ratios using green tea extracts and molybdate and efficiently improved the transportability of Mo/nZVI@GT. The pronounced size-selective retention of Mo/nZVI@GT in water-saturated porous media also favors for the effective reaction with Cr(VI) during their cotransport. Moreover, Cr(VI) reduction capacity of Mo/nZVI@GT was remarkably improved at pH 6.0, especially in the presence of phosphate. Mechanistically, X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that tea polyphenols promoted the production of Mo(IV) species in Mo/nZVI@GT, which enhanced the conversion of Cr(VI) to Cr 2 O 3 rather than Cr(OH) 3. Additionally, the increased Mo(IV) and Fe(II) active sites might mitigate phosphate disturbance. This study elucidated the mechanisms of Cr(VI) reduction and removal by green synthesized nZVI@GT with Mo modification during their cotransport and highlighted the potential application of Mo/nZVI@GT composites in efficient in situ remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater and soil.

Abstract:“Green” synthesis is attracted considerable interest in materials science as a reliable, durable, and environmentally friendly approach to fabricating a wide range of nanoparticles such as metal oxide. Green production of metal nanoparticles was used to host a variety of biological components (such as fungi, algae, plant extracts bacteria etc.). Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 was employed in this biosynthetic investigation of palladium nanoparticles (Bio-Pd) to produce Cr (VI) under aerobic circumstances. By adjusting the ratio of microbial biomass to palladium precursors, it was possible to control the distribution and size of Bio-Pd. The Pd ratio had the smallest average particle size at 6.33 1.69 nm. Additionally, it has a formic acid oxidation electrocatalytic potential of -0.132 V, which is 0.158 V smaller than that of commercial Pd/C (5%). The entire catalytic reduction of a 200 mg/L Cr (VI) solution could be achieved by the tiny, uniformly distributed extracellular Bio-Pd within 10 minutes, but commercially available Pd/C (5%) required at least 45 minutes. Over five cycles, the Bio-Pd material offers a high decrease rate. Microbes have a substantial effect on the entire process of effectively reducing Cr (VI), dispersing palladium nanoparticles, and adsorbing Cr (III). The findings of this study will serve as a guide for the advancement of effective and environmentally acceptable bio-Pd catalysts for pollution control in straightforward and reasonable situations.

Abstract:Palladium nanomaterials (PdNPs) have drawn significant attention due to their fascinating catalytic, optical, and electrical properties. PdNPs-catalytic hydrogenation is considered as an efficient way for the remediation of inorganic and organic pollutants. Thus, a simple Konjac glucomannan (KGM) reduced and stabilized PdNPs-catalysts were green synthesized without using any toxic reagents. The maximization of PdNPs production was investigated using a factorial design of experiments, where one variable (precursor ratio, solution pH, reaction time, and temperature) was studied at a time. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR), morphology, crystallinity, particle size distribution, composition spectra, and stability of as-synthesized PdNPs were explored in detail. Results revealed that the particles are mostly in spherical shapes, smaller in size (6.48 ± 2.19 nm) with a narrow distribution, highly crystalline (d–spacing = 0.224 nm), well stabilized (zeta potential = −17.89 mV), and coated by thin KGM layer of cladding. The type of oxidant and temperature-dependent catalytic degradation of six azo dyes and detoxification of hexavalent chromium [Cr (VI)] was studied. The as-synthesized PdNPs-catalyst demonstrate excellent performance in the formic acid (HCOOH)−induced catalytic reduction of such pollutants with the optimum at 45 °C temperature. We are optimistic that the insights on the behavior of reactant adsorption and reaction kinetics revealed in this study could be readily extended to other reaction systems and practically applied to wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Cr(VI) existed in the industrial wastewater which has high biological toxicity has become one of the main pollution sources at present, and it is also difficult to remove from the wastewater because of its chemical stability. In this work, a raspberry-like sulfur doped carbon nitride photocatalyst (SCNx) with significant high reduction performance over Cr(VI) was prepared by solvothermal process. The BET data showed that the specific surface area of SCN4 was 3.75 times that of g-C 3 N 4 . Meanwhile, sulfur doping successfully reduce the band gap, which significantly improve the effective photoelectron density on the surface of the material, thus enhance its reduction ability. On this basis, the reduction activity of the SCNx to Cr(VI) in actual underwater environment was further investigated. Results show that SCNx still has good removal performance under weak light intensity and weak UV conditions. At 20 cm depth where ultraviolet spectral is attenuated 86.2%, the removal rate of SCN4 over Cr(VI) can still reach 58.1%. This research demonstrated that through S-doping and morphology control modification, carbon nitride can remain high photoreaction activity in the underwater weak light and weak UV environment, thus realize the efficient reduction treatment of Cr(VI). The research demonstrated the feasibility of heavy metal water treatment, and indicate a possible direction for the future practical application of heavy metal water purification.

Abstract:Tin oxide nanoparticles optimized to capture low concentrations of hexavalent chromium from water were developed through a facile, scalable, and low-cost one-step solar vapor deposition methodology. Considering the preservation of high electron donation capacity as the key to support the reduction of mobile Cr(VI) into insoluble forms, the growth of SnO nanoparticles was favored by the co-evaporation of SnO2 with Fe powders at various mass ratios. Characterization techniques indicated that the percentage and the stability of SnO is proportional to the Fe content in the target with a requirement of at least 50% wt to inhibit the formation of a passive SnO2 surface layer. The produced particles were evaluated regarding their efficiency to capture Cr(VI) under conditions similar to water treatment for drinking purposes (pH 7). It was revealed that passivation-free SnO nanoparticles deliver significant improvement in the adsorption capacity corresponding to the residual concentration of 25 μg/L, reaching a value of 1.74 mg/g for the sample prepared with 50% wt Fe in the target. The increase of water acidity was found responsible for the activation of more reduction sites on the particle surface, as reflected through the elevation of efficiency by more than 20% at pH 6.

Abstract:In this study, we investigated the removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) through an innovative approach, which employed iron sulfide nanoparticles synthesized via a green chemistry technique, utilizing extracts derived from date palm seeds (referred to as ds-FeS). Batch studies, which were well represented by the Langmuir isotherm model, were conducted to determine the maximum removal capacities (q m ) of ds-FeS nanoparticles at three different initial pH conditions (pH = 3, 7, and 9). Additionally, batch kinetic studies were conducted under varying conditions of initial Cr(VI) load (3.5, 9, 27, and 38 mg/g of nanoparticles), nanoparticle dose (25, 37, 50, and 75 g/g of Cr(VI)), and initial pH (3, 5, 7, and 9). Results demonstrated the positive impact of acidic pH during Cr(VI) removal by ds-FeS wherein the highest q m of 31.3 mg/g and initial rate of 6.95 mg/g·min (pseudo-second order kinetics) were observed at pH 3. Conversely, with an increase in pH to neutral and alkaline conditions, a decline in both q m and initial rates was observed. Measurements of solution pH, total chromium, and particle surface chemistry using X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry techniques revealed the crucial roles of reduction, surface precipitation, and complexation processes in Cr(VI) removal by ds-FeS nanoparticles. Overall, this study demonstrates the promising potential of environmentally friendly, date palm seed–derived iron sulfide nanoparticles for Cr(VI) removal.

Abstract:This study explores the significant reduction effect of g-C3N4-modified MoS2 on Cr6+ in water, attributed to its piezo-photocatalytic activity. Electrochemical tests indicate that, compared to pure MoS2, the built-in electric field formed by the g-C3N4/MoS2 heterojunction effectively promotes the transfer rate of photogenerated charge carriers, thereby enhancing the reduction efficiency of Cr6+. Furthermore, applying mechanical force further strengthens the built-in electric field of the g-C3N4/MoS2 heterojunction, accelerating the transfer rate of photogenerated charge carriers and regulating the arrangement of the semiconductor material band structure. Moreover, cytotoxicity experiments demonstrate that the Cr6+ solution at tested concentrations treated with the g-C3N4/MoS2 piezo-photocatalytic system exhibited negligible toxic effect on Hep-G2 cells compared to before reaction, making it an environmentally friendly choice for water treatment. The research results are of significant importance for designing efficient catalysts for environmental remediation, as well as for biological and medical applications.

Abstract:In recent years, green chemistry has emerged as an efficient, environmentally friendly, and sustainable approach for nanoparticle synthesis. In this study, we employed a green chemistry method to synthesize ZnFe 2 O 4 @Au nanoparticles in the presence of a Crataegus monogyna leaf extract. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, demonstrating their spherical morphology and homogeneous structure. XRD analysis confirmed the purity of the ZnFe 2 O 4 @Au nanoparticles. We applied these nanoparticles as nano-catalysts for the degradation of cationic (methylene blue) and anionic (eriochrome black T) pollutants. Under UV irradiation, ZnFe 2 O 4 @Au nanoparticles exhibited high pollutant degradation efficiency, with 94.3% and 90.8% degradation of methylene blue and eriochrome black T, respectively, within 120 min. Furthermore, we investigated the antibacterial activity of the synthesized nanoparticles against Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains. Notably, the nanoparticles exhibited substantial antibacterial efficacy, with MIC values of 2.5 mg/ml for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli strains, respectively. This study highlights the multifaceted potential of ZnFe 2 O 4 @Au nanoparticles, making them a promising candidate for both environmental remediation and biological applications.
