Abstract:Based on that the aqueous-phase reforming of methanol and liquid phase hydrogenation of furfural have similary reaction conditions (temperature, pressure and in the liquid phase) on the Raney Ni catalyst, liquid phase in-situ reduction of furfural with hydrogen from the aqueous-phase reforming of methanol were investigated. The combination of the two reactions (hydrogen production and hydrogenation) is optimized in terms of reaction temperature, the ratio of substrate, and the amount of catalyst. The in-situ hydrogenation furfural shows a higher selectivity for furfuryl alcohol than the traditional hydrogenation method with molecular H-2 under the optimal conditions, i.e., 120 degrees C, 0.8 MPa, and the volume ratio of H2O:CH3OH: C5H4O2 = 25:125:5. Thus it could provide a new route for the selective hydrogenation of furfural into furfuryl alcohol.

Abstract:Furfuryl alcohol is a widely-used organic chemical. Catalytic hydrogenation is currently used in the production of furfuryl alcohol from furfural, which has disadvantages of high hydrogen consumption and cost. Catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol by Cu-Pd/Al2O3 in near-critical isopropanol was proposed in this study. Cu-Pd/Al2O3 catalysts with different Cu and Pd loading were prepared via co-precipitation and characterized with XRD and BET. Effects of Cu-Pd/Al2O3 catalyst composition, catalyst loading, furfural concentration, reaction temperature and reaction time on the catalytic transfer hydrogenation were investigated. The results show that the 18%Pd/Cu-2%/Al2O3 bimetallic catalyst has the best catalytic activity. 100% furfural conversion and 86.4% furfuryl alcohol yield are achieved with 18%Cu-2%Pd/Al2O3 at 190℃ for 3 h. Good catalytic activity is maintained after 4 recycling use. The method proposed has advantages of zero hydrogen consumption, high furfuryl alcohol yield and good catalyst reusability.

Abstract:Non-noble metal catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of biomass using biomass-derived formic acid (FA) as hydrogen source is one of promising strategies for relieving fossil energy crisis. Since acidic FA would destroy and deactivate naked active sites, developing heterogeneous catalysts with stabilized structure and activity that are qualified in harsh conditions is highly desirable but challenging. Herein, mesoporous N-doped carbon encapsulated Co catalysts (Co-N-C) are synthesized through a facile carbonization of Co(phen)(2)(OAc)(2) with nano-MgO as porogen agent. After acid treatment, the optimized Co-N-C-700 (pyrolyzed at 700 degrees C) could afford full furfural (FAL) conversion as well as > 99% furfuryl alcohol (FOL) selectivity with only 3.5 equiv. FA at 150 degrees C for 6 h, exhibiting much superior performance than commercial Pd-, Pt- and Ru-based catalysts. Using molecular H-2 as hydrogen source not only affords low conversion but also leads to over-hydrogenation of FOL and generation of furfuryl formate (FF). This catalyst is very stable in acidic FA and could be recycled 5 times without deactivation or leaching. Co-N-C-700 is also capable for gram-scale transfer hydrogenation of FAL and is versatile for other aldehydes with > 90% yield of desired products. This work could promote the application of encapsulated Co-based catalysts for selective transformation of biomass in chemical industry.

Abstract:Furfural is one of the most important lignocellulose derivatives in biomass. Its conversion to furfural alcohol (FA) is a great significance for value-added green chemicals. Here, we show that the hydrogenation of furfural over a SiO 2 nanosphere-supported PtCuCo alloy catalyst (PtCuCo/SiO 2 ), which exhibits excellent conversion to FA, up to 97.9%, with a selectivity to 95.4%. The superior activity is attributed to the formation of a PtCuCo alloy (Pt-Cu-Co sites) over the high-surface-area mesoporous silica. Structural and chemical characterizations indicate the formation of the PtCuCo alloy nanoparticles (NPs) in the catalyst is highly beneficial to the hydrogenolysis of furfural to produce intermediates, which are further hydrogenated to produce FA, with remarkable selectivity and efficiency.

Abstract:A Pd/UiO-66 catalyst was synthesized with well-dispersed Pd nanoparticles. The obtained catalyst was tested in the hydrogenation of furfural to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol in various solvents, Water was found to be the most suitable solvent. Pd/UiO-66 exhibited much higher activity than Pd/SiO2 and Pd/γ-Al2O3, completely converting furfural to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol with 100% selectivity under mild conditions. The hydrogenation of CO moiety in tetrahydrofurfural was rate-determining step. Static adsorption measurement indicated that the adsorption of furfural on UiO-66 was significantly stronger than that on SiO2 or γ-Al2O3, suggesting that the adsorption play an important role in the gas-liquid-solid furfural hydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:The production of furfuryl alcohol (FFA) from biomass-derived furfural (FF) via selective hydrogenation is challenging due to the diverse unsaturated groups. Herein, a novel hydrotalcite-derived Pt-based catalyst was synthesized to catalyze the selective hydrogenation of FF to FFA in water. Within 2 h at 303 K and 1.5 MPa H2, 99.9% conversion of FF with > 99% selectivity to FFA was obtained while the TOF being 204.6 h−1 and the E a being 12.8 kJmol−1. These results were accounted for by the 2D layered double hydroxides structure of hydrotalcite, which contributed to the high dispersion and effective reduction of Pt species, and the selective adsorption of the aldehyde group of FF on the catalyst, combined with the rapid desorption of the FFA produced. This guaranteed selective and stable hydrogenation over time, with up to four cycles ensured.

Abstract:A series of Cu/TiO2-SiO2 catalysts were prepared by a sol-gel hydrothermal method and characterized by BET, SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, and H-2-TPR. The catalysts were used for selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol. Results show that based on the Cu/SiO2 catalyst, introducing a part of TiO2 into the carrier while keeping very large specific surface area would promote the reduction of CuO, inhibit the growth of Cu crystal particles, and improve the dispersity of Cu particles in the catalyst. The electronegativity of Cu is enhanced in the double-loaded Cu/TiO2-SiO2 catalyst, compared with single-loaded Cu/SiO2 or Cu/TiO2 catalysts. The Cu/TiO2-SiO2 catalyst containing 0.40g/g (40wt%) TiO2 in the carrier shows high furfural hydrogenation performance.

Abstract:The liquid-phase hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol was carried out using a Pt–Sn/SiO2 catalyst synthesized by coimpregnation to investigate the impact of synthesis and reaction conditions. The results showed that calcination of the catalyst at 450 °C gave the highest furfural conversion. An investigation on the reaction conditions found that furfural conversion increased with temperature and hydrogen pressure. Reuse of the catalyst was shown to be as effective as catalyst regeneration with a 3% loss in furfural conversion observed with each repeated use. The use of protic and aprotic solvents showed that furfural conversion was lower using an aprotic solvent such as toluene or propanone, but selectivity to furfuryl alcohol remained close to 100%. The two protic solvents, 1-propanol and 2-propanol, formed several additional products including 2-methyl furan, 2-propoxy methyl furan, 2-furaldehyde dipropyl acetal, difurfuryl ether, and 2-furaldehyde diethyl acetal.

Abstract:Valuable furfuryl alcohol (FFA) and 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran (DHMF) could be produced by selective hydrogenation of biomass-derived furfural (FF) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) with high atom economy. In this study, SBA-15 (a kind of mesoporous silica molecular sieve)-supported low metal loading (3 wt% total metal content) PtNi alloy catalyst (PtNi/SBA-15) was synthesized via two steps, including the generation of PtNi alloy by hydrothermal method, and the immobilization of PtNi alloy on SBA-15. PtNi/SBA-15 has ordered mesoporous structure with high surface area, and high dispersion of the PtNi alloy with the formation of Ptδ--Niδ+ surface pairs on SBA-15, which benefit hydrogen activation and selective carbonyl hydrogenation. The selective hydrogenation of FF and HMF over PtNi/SBA-15 in water solvent at 303 K with 1.5 MPa H2 within 2 h, could respectively yield 64.6% FFA with 77.0% selectivity, and 68.2% DHMF with 81.9% selectivity. Besides, PtNi/SBA-15 exhibited a satisfactory water resistance and stability after recycling at least five runs.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets were investigated for developing effective Pt catalyst supports for selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol in water. The nanosheets with an average thickness of about 3 nm were synthesized by a simple and green method through thermal oxidation etching of bulk g-C3N4 in air. Combined with the unique feature of nitrogen richness and locally conjugated structure, the g-C3N4 nanosheets with a high surface area of 142 m2 g−1 were demonstrated to be an excellent supports for loading small-size Pt nanoparticles. Superior furfural hydrogenation activity in water with complete conversion of furfural and high selectivity of furfuryl alcohol (>99%) was observed for g-C3N4 nanosheets supported Pt catalysts. The large specific surface area, uniform dispersion of Pt nanoparticles and the stronger furfural adsorption ability of nanosheets contributed to the considerable catalytic performance. The reusability tests showed that the novel Pt catalyst could maintain high activity and stability in the furfural hydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:We reported a promising Cu/SiO2 catalyst derived from hydroxy double salts (HDS) by direct H2-reduction, which achieved a marked improvement of catalytic performance especially the stability. The preferable HDSderived Cu/SiO2 with a Cu-loading of 25 wt% was highly active with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 81.8 h-1, over which a high FFR conversion of 97.0% with 97.2% FOL selectivity could be achievable as well as a high space time yield of FOL of 0.42 gFOL gcat catalyst was stable for at least 120 h, being 7-fold longer than that (15 h) for the one obtained by the conventional ammonia evaporation method. Use of the Cu-based HDS imparted as-obtained catalyst to a high Cu+/ (Cu++Cu0) ratio with good maintenance of the Cu+-Cu0 dual-site structure on the stream, which made for the markedly enhanced catalyst activity and stability.

Abstract:The metal-catalyzed selective hydrogenation of biomass-derived molecules is in great demand but is challenging due to the complex reaction pathways. Herein, we report a persuasive example for achieving selective hydrogenation of furfural over Pd catalysts by controllable sorption of molecules in zeolite micropores. The key to this success is fixation of Pd nanoparticles inside of silicalite-1 zeolite with controllable wettability (Pd@S-1-OH) by functionalizing silanol groups into the zeolite framework. In the hydrogenation of furfural as a model reaction, the Pd@S-1-OH catalyst with appropriate hydrophilicity exhibits extraordinary selectivity for the formation of furan, giving furan selectivity as high as >99.9% with a complete conversion of furfural, outperforming the conventional Pd nanoparticles supported on zeolite crystals (Pd/S-1) and S-1 zeolite fixed Pd catalysts without an artificially functionalized silanol group (Pd@S-1). The extraordinary performance of Pd@S-1-OH is reasonably attributed to the controllable diffusion of molecules within the hydrophilic zeolite micropores, which favors the adsorption of furfural and a series of byproducts but promotes the desorption of furan. Very importantly, Pd@S-1-OH is stable and gives the furan productivity of similar to 583.3 g g(Pd)(-1) day(-1) in a continuous test.

Abstract:This study presents a single-atom Pt catalyst that achieves efficient C-F bond activation, which is a challenging reaction in both chemical synthesis and environmental remediation of recalcitrant fluorinated hydrocarbons. Up to 1.6 wt % Pt was loaded as a single-atom on SiC substrate (Pt-1/SiC) using a facile, scalable wet-chemical method developed based on anchor-site and photoreduction techniques. The high catalytic activity of Pt-1/SiC for hydrodefluorination of perfluorooctanoic acid, which is a select perfluorinated pollutant of significant environmental concern, is attributed to the effective hydrogen spillover from isolated Pt onto the SiC surface where the resulting Si-H bond further redistributes with the C-F bond to accomplish hydrodefluorination.
Development of Robust CuNi Bimetallic Catalysts for Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol under Mild Conditions

Abstract:Furfuryl alcohol represents a pivotal intermediate in the high-value utilization of renewable furfural, derived from agricultural residues. The industrial-scale hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol typically employs Cu-based catalysts, but their limited catalytic activity necessitates high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. Here, we develop robust CuNi bimetallic catalysts through direct calcination of dried sol–gel precursors under H2 atmosphere, enabling the complete conversion of furfural to furfuryl alcohol under mild conditions. By adjusting the calcination atmosphere and introducing small amounts of Ni, we achieve the formation of highly dispersed, ultrasmall Cu nanoparticles, resulting in a significant enhancement of the catalytic activity. The optimized 0.5%Ni-10%Cu/SiO2-CA(H2) catalyst demonstrates superior catalytic performance, achieving 99.4% of furfural conversion and 99.9% of furfuryl alcohol selectivity, respectively, at 55 °C under 2 MPa H2, outperforming previously reported Cu-based catalysts. The excellent performance of CuNi bimetallic catalysts can be attributed to the highly dispersed Cu nanoparticles and the synergistic effect between Cu and Ni for H2 activation. This research contributes to the rational design of Cu-based catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of furfural.

Bimetallic PtFe-Catalyzed Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol: Solvent Effect of Isopropanol and Hydrogen Activation

Abstract:Highly selective liquid-phase hydrogenation of furfural was efficiently catalyzed by PtFe alloy nanoparticles supported on CeO2. An initial reaction rate at ∼1500 h–1, a near 100% selectivity toward furfuryl alcohol (FA), and a satisfactory recycling stability were achieved on Pt3Fe/CeO2 catalyst. Based on the well-established knowledge of the modification effects of Fe additives on the geometric and electronic properties of Pt sites, this work further demonstrated that the bimetallic PtFe sites could promote H2-activated dissociation for accelerating the hydrogenation reaction in comparison with the monometallic Pt/CeO2 catalyst. The results of isotopic and kinetic experiments to study the solvent effects elucidated that the reaction pathway of catalytic transfer hydrogenation with isopropanol as the hydrogen donor could be ruled out. The results also suggested that isopropanol-involved hydrogen exchange processes with hydrogen and FA could easily occur during the reactions. Furthermore, the furfural hydrogenation could be significantly affected by the solvent intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural over Pt Based and Pd Based Bimetallic Catalysts Supported on Modified Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes (MWNT)

Abstract:Nano-Pt and Nano-Pd particles were introduced to modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes via co-impregnation method for hydrogenation of furfural in liquid phase using ethanol as a solvent. Different transition metal (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) was used as promoters using Pt/MWNT and Pd/MWNT catalysts and various supports were also compared to further investigate the hydrogenation process of furfural. Among the catalysts investigated, Pt-Fe/MWNT (Pt: 0.5 wt%) showed highest conversion and selectivity to furfuryl alcohol (yield of 87.4%), while Pd-Ni/MWNT (Pd: 0.5 wt%) catalysts exhibited the best catalytic performance (83.3% yield of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol) under the optimized conditions of 30 bar hydrogen and 5 h, at 100 and 130 degrees C, respectively. Synergistic effect of bimetallic catalysts has been utilized to improve catalytic activity and stability. The extremely active for the selective hydrogenation of furfural over Pt-Fe/MWNT and Pd-Ni/MWNT catalyst might be attributed to active crystal planes exposed over Pt and Pd promoted by Fe and Ni. Catalysts have shown stable activity and selectivity after 5 cycles using Pt-Fe/MWNT and Pd-Ni/MWNT catalysts. Moreover, we suggest that acid sites of conventional supports might have an impact on furfural conversion.
Furfuryl alcohol from furfural by hydrogenation under atmospheric pressure

Abstract:A series of Cu catalysts for hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol under normal pressure have been studied in a fixed-bed flow reactor. A non-toxic and highly selective catalyst FDK-1 has been found. The effects of reaction conditions on the catalytic activity are examined and a yield of furfuryl alcohol as high as 98% is obtained. Results of XRD and AES show that the catalytic activity depends on Cu 0 and the structure of the active unit is Cu-Zn-O (�� is oxygen vacancy).

Abstract:Copper catalysts showed excellent CO hydrogenation selectivity, but poor ability of hydrogen dissociation. Herein, a strategy to improve the activity of a Cu-based catalyst is developed by thermal treatment of Cu(OH)2 at 100 °C with C2H2/Ar (0.5 vol%) followed by H2 reduction at 300 °C. By means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), it was revealed that CuxC crystallites, in addition to Cu crystallites, were present in the prepared catalysts. In furfural hydrogenation at 60 °C and 1.0 MPa, the CuxC-containing catalyst showed significantly higher activity than the Cu counterpart prepared from the same precursor by H2 reduction at 300 °C. The introduction of ZnO improved the dispersion, and thus led to enhanced catalytic performance. The CuxC-Cu-ZnO catalyst with Zn/Cu molar ratio of 0.5 showed considerably high hydrothermal stability in a 70-h run, with furfural conversion of >99.0% and the furfuryl alcohol selectivity of 100%.
