Abstract:Power transactions create security, reliability, and congestion problems in the competitive power markets (CPMs) and also make their operations complex. It may not always be possible to dispatch all contracted transactions under unexpected generator outages, transmission line outages, sudden load changes, etc. Therefore, to ensure reliable, economical, and secure operation of the transactive energy markets (TEMs), an optimal dispatch of transactions is very important in the planning and operation of the TEMs to achieve desired economic and security benefits. This paper presents a simple and efficient approach for the dispatch of transactions with a significant reduction in the system risks by optimal placement of reserves in the TEMs under critical contingencies. In this work, the critical contingencies are identified based on economic risk. A financial risk factor is used to determine the best locations for placement of reserves to minimize generation cost, congestion cost, cost of transactions and reserve units, and deviations of scheduled transactions. This work also considers renewable energy sources and virtual power plants for optimal dispatch of the transactions and reserve units with minimization of the economic risks under contingencies. A self-adaptive particle swarm optimization (SAPSO) algorithm is used to solve the proposed dispatch model and its performance is evaluated on the modified IEEE 5-bus, modified IEEE 14-bus, and IEEE 57-bus systems with firm and non-firm transactions being considered in the market model.
