Abstract:The copolymerization of carbon dioxide (CO2) and epoxides to produce aliphatic polycarbonates is a burgeoning technology for the large-scale utilization of CO2 and degradable polymeric materials. Even with the wealth of advancements achieved over the past 50 years on this green technology, many challenges remain, including the use of metal-containing catalysts for polymerization, the removal of the chromatic metal residue after polymerization, and the limited practicable epoxides, especially for those containing electron-withdrawing groups. Herein, we provide kinds of pinwheel-shaped tetranuclear organoboron catalysts for epichlorohydrin/CO2 copolymerization with >99% polymer selectivity and quantitative CO2 uptake (>99% carbonate linkages) under mild conditions (25-40 degrees C, 25 bar of CO2). The produced poly(chloropropylene carbonate) has the highest molecular weight of 36.5 kg/mol and glass transition temperature of 45.4 degrees C reported to date. The energy difference (Delta E-a = 60.7 kJ/mol) between the cyclic carbonate and polycarbonate sheds light on the robust performance of our metal-free catalyst. Control experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed a cyclically sequential copolymerization mechanism. The metal-free feature, high catalytic performance under mild conditions, and no trouble with chromaticity for the produced polymers imply that our catalysts are practical candidates to advance the CO2-based polycarbonates.

Abstract:The carbonylative polymerization of epoxides provides a promising but challenging strategy to synthesize polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) which are of high commercial value in the field of biomedical materials and engineering plastics. Herein, a suite of well-defined bifunctional organoboron-cobalt catalysts, featuring simple preparation, high yields, and low metal content, are exploited for the carbonylative polymerization of epoxides to PHA oligomers. The organoboron-cobalt-mediated carbonylative polymerization exhibits high polyester selectivity (over 95%, four epoxide examples), and the obtained PHAs have more than 99% ester linkages on the polymer main chain. Detailed investigations based on in situ reactIR and H-1 NMR analyses first found the concurrence of the direct alternating copolymerization of epoxides/CO, the ring expansion carbonylation of the epoxides to afford beta-lactones, and the in situ homopolymerization of beta-lactones under a single catalyst. This rare discovery provides a fundamentally different mechanism in the preparation of PHAs from CO/epoxides, extending the arsenal of catalytic systems that can copolymerize CO with epoxides.
Multifunctional Linear And Hyperbranched Five-Membered Cyclic Carbonate-Based Polymers Directly Generated From Co2 And Alkyne-Based Three-Component Polymerization

Abstract:Fixing carbon dioxide (CO2) into polymeric materials is a subject of enduring interest but limited to very few efficient polymerizations. In this work, a facile Pd(OAc)(2)/(LiOBu)-Bu-t-catalyzed one-pot, three-component polymerization of CO2, bis(propargylic alcohol)s, and aryl dihalides under atmospheric pressure is developed. Linear and hyperbranched multifunctional five-membered cyclic carbonate (5CC)-based polymers with welldefined structures, high weight-average molecular weights (M-w up to 42500), and versatile properties such as aggregation-induced emission as well as chiral and porous properties are successfully produced in excellent yields (up to 96%). The reaction mechanism was well investigated via the density functional theory calculation and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, both indicating that there is synergistic reaction effect among CO2, bis(propargylic alcohols, and aryl dihalides. The polymers could be postfunctionalized by amines via catalyst-free regioselective ring-opening reaction with 100% grafting ratio. Thus, this work not only develops a new way to directly fix CO2 into polymeric materials but also provides the 5CC-based polymers with versatile properties, showing great potentials in diverse areas.

Abstract:A new catalytic route has been developed for the coupling of epoxides and CO2 affording polymerizable six‐membered bicyclic carbonates. Cyclic epoxides equipped with a b‐positioned OH group can be transformed into structurally diverse bicyclic cyclic carbonates in good yields and with high selectivity. Key to the chemo‐selectivity is the difference between the reactivity of syn‐ and anti‐configured epoxy alcohols, with the latter leading to six‐membered ring carbonate formation in the presence of a binary Al(III) aminotriphenolate complex/DIPEA catalyst. X‐ray analyses show that the conversion of the syn‐configured substrate evolves via a standard double inversion pathway providing a five‐membered carbonate product, whereas the anti‐isomer allows for activation of the oxirane unit of the substrate opposite to the pendent alcohol. The potential use of these bicyclic products is shown in ring‐opening polymerization offering access to rigid polycarbonates with improved thermal resistance.

Abstract:The novel carbon-based acid catalyst has been applied to catalyzing the acetalization and ketalization. The results showed that the catalyst was very efficient with the average yield over 93%. The novel heterogeneous catalyst has the advantages of high activity, wide applicability even to 7-membered ring acetals, strikingly simple workup procedure, non-pollution, and reusability, which will contribute to the green process greatly.

The catalytic activity for acetalization and ketalization at room temperature under solvent-free condition was investigated. The results showed that the novel catalyst was very efficient for the reaction. Also the novel heterogeneous catalyst owned the advantages of high activity, wide applicability, strikingly simple work-up procedure, non-pollution, stability and reusability, which made the catalyst hold great potential for the "green process".

Abstract:Polyolefins attract considerable attention due to their vast consumption and wide application. In this study, cross-metathesis polymerization (CMP) is demonstrated to be an efficient and feasible method for the synthesis of aliphatic polyketones. The synthetic route features good yield, mild condition and easy operation. The success of CMP relies on the high cross-metathesis tendency between a-olefin and vinyl ketone units of monomer 2. Optimization of polymerization condition was conducted to generate unsaturated polyketone P0 (M-n, GPC = 14 kDa), and the results of kinetic study verified high efficiency and structural integrity of this system. Furthermore, post-polymerization modification of P0 by using thiol-Michael chemistry furnished functional polyketones P1-P6, and full conversion of the internal vinyl ketone groups of P0 was observed in each case. The pristine and functional polyketones P0-P6 were virtually soluble in most common organic solvents. In particular, hydrophobic and fluorescent polyketones (P5 and P6) were also obtained by this means. Therefore, this synthetic strategy shows promising future and exemplifies huge potential for the synthesis of a diverse range of functional polyketones.

Abstract:Porphyrin- and cobalt (II)-metallated porphyrin-based porous polyaminals (PAN-TDP and Co@PAN-TDP) were synthesized via one-step polycondensation reaction utilizing octo-functional 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (4-(2,4-di-aminotriazinyl)phenyl)-porphyrin (TDP) and cobalt (II)-metallated porphyrin (Co@TDP) to polymerize with terephthalaldehyde, respectively. The achieved BET surface areas (1535-1589 m(2) g(-1)) are the largest among the aminal-linked porous polymers already published in the literature. The synergistic role of nitrogen-rich polymer skeleton, ultramicroporous and microporous structure, and large specific surface area in Co@PAN-TDP gives rise to high adsorption capacity of CO2 (17.9 wt%, 273 K/1 bar). Meanwhile, Co@PAN-TDP exhibits excellent heterogeneous catalysis performance for the cycloaddition reactions of CO2 with various epoxides. Of particular interest is that the silicon- and sulfite-containing cycloaliphatic di-epoxides can be converted to cyclic di-carbonates with high conversion rates (88.7-90.5%) and TON values (825-842) despite the large steric hindrance. The generated novel silicon- and sulfite-containing cycloaliphatic di-functional carbonates are potential monomers for the preparation of isocyanate-free polyurethanes.
Basic-functionalized Ionic Porous Organic Polymers: Triple Roles in One for Highly Efficient and Recyclable Carboxylative Cyclization of CO2 under Mild Conditions.

Abstract:The transformation of carbon dioxide (CO2) into high-value chemicals is a significant step towards achieving the goal of "carbon neutrality". α-methylene cyclic carbonate, as an intermediate for the synthesis of many important organic compounds, is widely employed in industrial productions. In this work, a series of ionic porous organic polymers (IPOPs) with different basic-functionalized anions were successfully synthesized and adjusted to have certain BET surface areas and high contents of ion sites by post-modification. These basic-functionalized IPOPs could exhibit excellent catalytic performance for carboxylative cyclization of CO2 at 30 oC and 1 bar in presence of silver salts, eliminating the use of extra organic bases. In the whole catalytic reaction, the basic-functionalized anions could play triple roles: enriching CO2 for further transformation, activating the hydroxyl groups of substrates to improve the catalytic performance, while coordinating with Ag atom to stabilize and regenerate catalyst. Notably, the catalytic system of DCX-4-Tet/Ag2O exhibited excellent recyclability, and the yield of α-alkylidene cyclic carbonate was well maintained at 99% after 5 cycles. To the best of our knowledge, the catalytic system was the first example of basic-functionalized IPOPs that played multiple roles for highly efficient CO2 cyclization under mild conditions without any extra organic bases.

Abstract:The chemoselective coupling of oxetanes and carbon dioxide to afford functional, heterocyclic organic compounds known as six-membered cyclic carbonates remains a challenging topic. Here, an effective method for their synthesis relying on the use of Al catalysis is described. The catalytic reactions can be carried out with excellent selectivity for the cyclic carbonate product tolerating various (functional) groups present in the 2- and 3-position(s) of the oxetane ring. The presented methodology is the first general approach towards the formation of six-membered cyclic carbonates (6MCCs) through oxetane/CO2 coupling chemistry. Apart from a series of substituted six-membered cyclic carbonates, also the unprecedented room-temperature coupling of oxetanes and CO2 is disclosed giving, depending on the structural features of the substrate, a variety of five- and six-membered heterocyclic products. A mechanistic rationale is presented for their formation and support for the intermediary presence of a carbonic acid derivative is given. The presented functional carbonates may hold great promise as building blocks in organic synthesis and the development of new, biodegradable polymers.

Abstract:A cationic covalent organic polymer with bifunctional active site was synthesized, which was treated by N, N'-bis(5-bromomethylsalicylaldehyde)ethylenediamine (salen ligand) and tris(1H-imidazol-1-yl) triazine (TIT) in the presence of aluminum ethoxide. The bifunctional cationic covalent organic polymer was investigated by various characterization technologies including PXRD, FT-IR, XPS, TG, SEM, EDS, N2-adsorption and CO2-adsorption. In this polymer, aluminum acts as lewis acid site and bromine ion acts as nucleophile, cooperatively catalyzing the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and epoxides. Due to its cooperative effect, a higher catalytic activity was found to exhibit 98.1% conversion of epichlorohydrin under optimized conditions (Initial pressure 1.0 MPa, 0.57 mol% catalyst of COP-Al, 90 °C, reaction time 18 h, in the absence of a co-catalyst). Notably, the heterogeneous catalyst still showed good activity and stability after five cycles.

Abstract:Designing polymeric materials for closed-loop material streams is the key to achieving a circular society. Here, a library of macrocyclic carbonates (MCs) was designed by a facile and direct one-pot, two-step synthesis approach without the use of a solvent at a 10 g scale. We demonstrate that anionic polymerization with tert-butoxide enables the ultrafast ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of MCs with high conversion (>97%) within seconds (3–10 s) at ambient temperature. The polymerization rate depends on the odd or even number of methylene groups between the carbonate linkages in the MCs, and not the overall ring size, yielding an “odd–even” effect. This polymerization rate is related to the difference in molecular conformation of the MCs, as determined by X-ray crystallography. The polymers (polypenta-, hexa-, heptamethylene carbonate) were subsequently regenerated back to their original MCs at a high selectivity (95–99 mol %) and good yields (70–85%), hence taking a step toward closing the loop on these long alkyl chain polycarbonates.

Abstract:Polycarbonates with pendant functional groups have attracted much attention due to their capability for further chemical modification and post-polymerization. This work describes the synthesis of a poly(carbonate-co-ether) with massive pendant acrylate groups from the copolymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) with carbon dioxide (CO2), using a nanolamellar zinc-cobalt double metal cyanide complex (Zn-Co(III) DMCC) catalyst. The carbonate linkage content (FCO2) of the poly(carbonate-coether) could be varied from 42.2 to 68.0% by changing the polymerization conditions. Of importance, 4-methoxyphenol was applied for regulating the copolymerization. It could not only act as an inhibitor for completely depressing the self-polymerization of GMA via free radical polymerization of the double bond, but also modulate the molecular weight of the resultant copolymers. The obtained copolymer had two terminal hydroxyl groups, which were confirmed by the electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) technique. A new thermoset with high glass transition temperature (T-g: 105 or 120 degrees C) and massive carbonate units as well as hydroxyl (or carboxylic) groups was prepared by the curing reaction of the GMA-CO2 copolymer with allyl alcohol or acrylic acid in the presence of 2,20azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN).
Facile Construction of Carboxyl-Functionalized Ionic Polymer towards Synergistic Catalytic Cycloaddition of Carbon Dioxide into Cyclic Carbonates

Abstract:The development of bifunctional ionic polymers as heterogeneous catalysts for effective, cocatalyst- and metal-free cycloaddition of carbon dioxide into cyclic carbonates has attracted increasing attention. However, facile fabrication of such polymers having high numbers of ionic active sites, suitable types of hydrogen bond donors (HBDs), and controlled spatial positions of dual active sites remains a challenging task. Herein, imidazolium-based ionic polymers with hydroxyl/carboxyl groups and high ionic density were facilely prepared by a one-pot quaternization reaction. Catalytic evaluation demonstrated that the presence of HBDs (hydroxyl or carboxyl) could enhance the catalytic activities of ionic polymers significantly toward the CO2 cycloaddition reaction. Among the prepared catalysts, carboxyl-functionalized ionic polymer (PIMBr-COOH) displayed the highest catalytic activity (94% yield) in the benchmark cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and epichlorohydrin, which was higher than hydroxyl-functionalized ionic polymer (PIMBr-OH, 76% yield), and far exceeded ionic polymer without HBDs groups (PIMBr, 54% yield). Furthermore, PIMBr-COOH demonstrated good recyclability and wide substrate tolerance. Under ambient CO2 pressure, a number of epoxides were smoothly cycloadded into cyclic carbonates. Additionally, density functional theory (DFT) calculation verified the formation of strong hydrogen bonds between epoxide and the HBDs of ionic polymers. Furthermore, a possible mechanism was proposed based on the synergistic effect between carboxyl and Br− functionalities. Thus, a facile, one-pot synthetic strategy for the construction of bifunctional ionic polymers was developed for CO2 fixation.

A Halogen-Free Hyper-Crosslinked Ionic Polymer for Efficient Multi-Conversion of CO2 into Carbonates under Mild Conditions, with a Combination of Theoretical Study

Abstract:Designing catalysts that can efficiently convert CO2 into carbonates remains a challenge. Herein, the multi-functional CO2 affinity hyper-crosslinked ionic polymer was synthesized through self-condensation, quaterni-zation, and ion exchange. The catalyst structure was characterized by FT-IR, TGA, NMR, XPS, and electron microscope spectra. The catalysts have a porous morphology, exhibiting a specific area of 542.2 m2/g and a CO2 adsorption capacity of 0.042 g/g. The CO2 cycloaddition with epichlorohydrin (ECH) can reach a yield of 93 % under metal-and solvent-free conditions. Meanwhile, the transesterification yield of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) between propylene carbonate (PC) and methanol was 62 % under ambient conditions and 83 % at 60 degrees C. Besides, the catalyst exhibited expansion of up to 16 substrates and no significant loss of activity after 6 cycles. Furthermore, the mechanism was evidenced by the combination of experimental studies and DFT-based calcu-lations, revealing a synergistic effect between the active groups of the two reactions. This work emphasized the pathway that can simultaneously promote the formation of carbonates by both CO2 cycloaddition and trans-esterification under mild conditions.

Abstract:Halogenated porous melamine polymers were demonstrated as an efficient catalyst for CO 2 -epoxide cycloaddition, selectively (>99%) producing C3-C12 cyclic carbonates in excellent yields (upto 99%) under solvent and co-catalyst free conditions. The halogenated polymers outperformed benchmark catalysts incorporating only basic (N-doped carbon, ZIF-8, N-rich melamine polymer) or nucleophilic (TBAB, KI) sites. The superior catalytic performance of these inexpensive polymers was attributed to their unique surface chemistry incorporating abundant, stable basic N sites (amine N and protonated N) and nucleophilic (Cl - , Br - or I - ) that enabled simultaneous activation of both epoxide and CO 2 molecule (supported by kinetic and DFT studies). Further, among halogenated polymers a Br - containing material (PMF Br ) presented highest activity owing to its balanced CO 2 -philicity and strong nucleophilicity. Most importantly, PMF Br was robust, reusable and maintained stable performance for continuous production of C3-C4 cyclic carbonate (120 o C, 0.3-0.83 WHSV epoxide and 15 bar) in a fixed-bed reactor during 60-190 h TOS.

Abstract:There is a growing interest in sustainable heterogeneous catalysts based on organic polymers. Here, we describe a series of polyimidazolium salt catalysts, prepared from the direct reaction of arene- bridged bis- and tris-alkyl halides with trimethylsilylimidazole. The polyimidazolium salts were characterized by spectroscopic and analytical techniques and it was found that their morphology and porosity could be controlled by adjusting the steric parameters of the spacer in the alkyl-halide starting materials. Moreover, the polymers are excellent heterogeneous organocatalysts for the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides to afford cyclic carbonates at atmospheric pressure under solvent-free conditions. The polymer catalysts exhibit long-term stability and may be recycled and reused at least.
Highly Efficient Synthesis of Alkylidene Cyclic Carbonates from Low Concentration CO2 Using Hydroxyl and Azolate Dual Functionalized Ionic Liquids

Abstract:The development of sustainable heterogeneous catalysts in converting carbon dioxide (CO2) into value-added chemicals is a promising way to alleviate the environmental pressure caused by global warming. Here, two novel ionic polymers (IPs, namely IP-1 and IP-2) with high yield and excellent physiochemical stability have been synthesized facilely from the direct reaction of 1,3,5-tris(bromomethyl)benzene with 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane and 3,6-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)pyridazine, respectively. Their catalytic abilities to convert CO2 into cyclic carbonates have been explored, and both IP-1 and IP-2 show excellent catalytic activity under solvent-free, cocatalyst-free, and mild reaction conditions, and can be recycled and reused six times without decreasing their catalytic abilities. These materials are easily synthesized, and there are no metals and other additives during the catalytic process, which provides a possibility for the industrial immobilization of CO2 to carbonate over heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:The integration of synergic hydrogen bond donors and nucleophilic anions that facilitates the ring-opening of epoxide is an effective way to develop an active catalyst for the cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides. In this work, a new heterogeneous catalyst for the cycloaddition of epoxides and CO2 into cyclic carbonates based on dual hydroxyls-functionalized polymeric phosphonium bromide (PQPBr-2OH) was presented. Physicochemical characterizations suggested that PQPBr-2OH possessed large surface area, hierarchical pore structure, functional hydroxyl groups, and high density of active sites. Consequently, it behaved as an efficient, recyclable, and metal-free catalyst for the additive and solvent free cycloaddition of epoxides with CO2. Comparing the activity of PQPBr-2OH with that of the reference catalysts based on mono and non-hydroxyl functionalized polymeric phosphonium bromides suggested that hydroxyl functionalities in PQPBr-2OH showed a critical promotion effect on its catalytic activity for CO2 conversion. Moreover, PQPBr-2OH proved to be quite robust and recyclable. It could be reused at least ten times with only a slight decrease of its initial activity.
