Autonomous Navigation and Attitude Determination System Design for Micro-Nano Satellites with Limited Sensors

Abstract:Autonomous system design has received extensive attention for orbit and attitude determination, since the traditional ground station-based orbit determination is difficult to meet the multi-satellite needs. With a combination of limited sensors, this article presents an autonomous navigation-attitude determination system for low-earth-orbit micro-nano satellites. By adding the area-to-mass ratio to state vector, the atmospheric resistance is effectively considered. By introducing an infrared earth sensor, the limitations of the orbit type and eclipse period are compensated, with the consideration of computational burden. Simulation based on ZDPS-2 satellites show the estimation accuracy of this paper is improved by 23% compared with the magnetometer/sun sensor combination, reaching 1.08 km, 1.16 m/s (RMS); whereas for an equatorial orbit, estimation accuracy remains 1.11 km (RMS). While completing navigation estimation, the system attitude pointing accuracy reaches 0.347° (RMS), which meets the basic mission requirements of micro-nano satellites.

Abstract:In recent years, the number of expected missions to the Moon has increased significantly. With limited terrestrial-based infrastructure to support this number of missions, as well as restricted visibility over intended mission areas, there is a need for space navigation system autonomy. Autonomous on-board navigation systems in the lunar environment have been the subject of study by a number of authors. Suggested systems include optical navigation, high-sensitivity Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers, and navigation-linked formation flying. This paper studies the interoperable nature and fusion of proposed autonomous navigation systems that are independent of Earth infrastructure, given challenges in distance and visibility. This capability is critically important for safe and resilient mission architectures. The proposed elliptical frozen orbits of lunar navigation satellite systems will be of special interest, investigating the derivation of orbit determination by non-terrestrial sources utilizing celestial observations and inter-satellite links. Potential orbit determination performances around 100 m are demonstrated, highlighting the potential of the approach for future lunar navigation infrastructure.

Abstract:In order to obtain absolute heading angle and position, lunar rover needs the support of autonomous celestial navigation system (CNS). This paper proposes a sun observation based simultaneous celestial positioning and orientation (SCPO) algorithm for the lunar rover under stationary position. Firstly we measure the sun orientation by a sun sensor and the gravity orientation by an inclinometer; secondly combine them with sun ephemeris; finally solve this problem with quaternion estimation (QUEST). By analyzing affects of the sensor's system error (such as the installation errors, bias, etc.) and random noise under stationary conditions, these two types of errors can be eliminated using joint calibration. Executing the SCPO on the moon is demonstrated through simulation. The algorithm is carried out with an experiment on the earth surface, and results demonstrate the high consistency of our simulation.

Abstract:The long-time, long-range autonomous navigation system is one of the key technologies which assist lunar rover to finish scientific exploration missions. A novel real-time celestial navigation (RCN) method is proposed to solve this problem, which is based on celestial observation and output of angular rate gyroscope. In this paper, the star's direction vector from star sensor is treated as observation for system measurement equation; kinematics model is established using this angular velocity current statistical model (ACSM) for the rover, and its attitude quaternion differential equation is treated as system state equation. Finally, the extended Kalman filter (EKF) gives the solutions of rover's position, heading and attitude. Simulation results show that this method could obtain higher celestial navigation accuracy in real-time. © 2011 Chinese Assoc of Automati.

Abstract:Astronomical means of navigation for solving applied tasks with a long duration of execution, their advantages in comparison with other sources of navigation information are considered. The prerequisites for the creation of a new generation of astrogation systems are analyzed. The layout of the astrogation system, its components, appearance and internal structure are presented. The functional scheme of the system for various operating modes is given. The limitations on the use of astrosystems in marine conditions and ways to overcome them when designing an experimental sample are shown. The test results of the experimental sample allowed us to determine the directions for further improvement of the design and characteristics of new-generation astrogation systems.

Abstract:With more and more activities in cislunar space and deep space, a navigation system that can provide autonomous navigation service for cislunar or even deep space missions has become an urgent need. This article proposes a new type of navigation constellation which is placed on two kinds of special orbits, namely the dynamical substitutes around the triangular libration points and the distant retrograde orbits (DROs). Both types of orbits have the same characteristics of long-term stability under the full force model, so no orbit control is needed and it can operate autonomously without ground support. First, using inter-satellite range data, the autonomous orbit determination between navigation satellites on the dynamical substitutes and the DROs is investigated under the full force model. Then, taking a translunar orbit as an example, the constellation’s navigation performance based on inter-satellite range observation is evaluated. With range errors of 1, 10, and 100 m, respectively, the navigation capability of the constellation is successfully verified in the sense that the accuracy of the determined orbit reaches the level of the observation data. From the viewpoint of stable autonomous navigation, the current results are meaningful and deserve further consideration when deploying the navigation constellation in the Earth–Moon system.

Abstract:When ground station tracking or Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals are not readily available, orbit determination can be challenging. For these situations, a computationally efficient and autonomous navigation system that is independent of these update sources is proposed. This navigation system involves two satellites, designated Chief and Deputy. The Chief is equipped with a star camera and can measure the relative position of the Deputy. Using an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) equipped with a second-order zonal harmonic gravity model and Gravity Model Error Compensation (GMEC), absolute position and velocity estimates of the Chief and Deputy can be obtained near any celestial body. Despite the low fidelity of the second-order zonal harmonic gravity model, we show that the GMEC technique used in this study enables accurate orbit determination of both satellites in the absence of a high-fidelity gravity model. As a result, this navigation system becomes feasible to implement aboard small satellites which can be computationally constrained. Through performance demonstrations in various geocentric and Lunar orbits, we show that our navigation system is well suited for cislunar and deep space navigation.

Abstract:In this paper, the Sun–Earth–Moon (i.e., SEM) autonomous navigation problem is investigated for the Lissajous orbit and the quasi-halo orbit about the translunar libration point. Generally, the SEM navigation method can offer a convergent estimation by using orientation information. However, due to the unstable nature of the translunar libration orbit, it is still indispensable to further prove that only orientation information can guarantee the convergence. Therefore, three sensor configurations are studied to find an appropriate sensor configuration for translunar libration probe. In order to achieve this goal, a new navigation dynamic model with standard ephemerides is proposed. The observability analysis is used to evaluate the feasibility of each sensor configuration. Autonomous navigation is obtained by extended Kalman filtering. Simulations show that the sensor configuration of using orientation information from the spacecraft to the Sun, the Earth and the Moon and one Doppler measurement can satisfy both the economical efficiency and reliability.

Abstract:Due to the advantages of reducing the burden of ground station support,enhancing the viability and expanding the special application of spacecraft,autonomous navigation has been successfully validated and begun to apply in foreign deep space missions.It will be a key technology for deep space missions in future. As the lack of ground station tracking resources,the development of autonomous navigation will become more important for Chinese deep space exploration program.Based on the upcoming Chinese Mars mission and asteroids mission,the application and development of autonomous navigation for deep space mission is reviewed and analyzed.Then,the optical sensor used in autonomous navigation system of different deep space mission is recapitulated.Finally,according to the asteroids based optical autonomous navigation of ＂Deep Space 1＂ mission,the critical techniques associated with its study of autonomous navigation are summarized.

Abstract:The past decade has witnessed a growing interest in lunar exploration missions. The autonomy of lunar surface and in-orbit missions is, however, dependent on accurate and instantaneous navigation services. These services can not be provided by current Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) whose signals suffer from poor geometry and coverage in the vicinity of the Moon. Preliminary results of a systems architecture study on a new satellite navigation system orbiting the moon are presented. Lunar frozen orbit conditions under J2, C22 and third-body perturbations are assumed. The formulation includes the following design decisions: (1) Orbit semi-major axis, (2) Number of satellites, (3) Number of orbital planes, (4) Satellite phasing in adjacent planes, (5) Orbit eccentricity and (6) Argument of <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://periapsis.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> Borg Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm (MOEA) framework is used to optimize the satellite constellation design problem, with a fitness function that takes into account performance, cost, availability and station-keeping deltaV. The performance metric is based on the Geometric Dilution of Precision (GDOP), which is computed over a grid of 500 equidistant points on the lunar surface. Additionally, the input satellite orbits used in the GDOP computation are obtained from high-fidelity orbit propagation using NASA General Mission Analysis Toolbox. Finally, satellite costs are based on satellite dry mass estimates derived from the power budget analysis assuming a satellite lifetime of 10 years. Results show that Lunar GNSS constellation with 20 satellites at frozen orbits can achieve satisfactory performance at mid-latitudes but not at the poles.

Abstract:Aiming at the long time in-orbit navigation of spacecraft, a fully autonomous navigation system based on SINS/Ultraviolet sensor/Star sensor is proposed. With the Ultraviolet sensor for positioning and the Star sensor for attitude determination, a higher navigation precision can be reached. Then the state model and the measurement model for this integrated navigation system are constructed in the inertial frame. The spacecraft attitude is represented by the MRPs in these models, for large initial misalignment angle or large angle maneuver as orbit transfer. At last, the EKF and UKF filter method are used for both low orbit and high orbit spacecraft. The simulation results show that the positioning accuracy is as high as 310m even for geosynchronous orbit spacecraft.

Abstract:Abstract The revived interest of many countries and the growing number of ongoing and scheduled missions to the Moon increases the significance of supporting navigation system development. A number of publications are based on multi-Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signal reception from the opposite side of the Earth using high-gain antennas and lunar augmentation constellations. While the accuracy of such systems could be sufficient, the positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) service dependency on circumterestrial navigation sources prevents the use of advanced navigation technologies honed in circumlunar space for further Mars and other celestial body missions, which is one of the major goals of lunar exploration. Moreover, orbit determination and time synchronization (ODTS) method descriptions and estimations are usually skipped in the studies of lunar augmentations. An alternative concept of the Lunar Navigation Satellite System (LNSS) is proposed based on Earth-dependency reduction principal and on-board ODTS. The advantage of the proposed approach is that LNSS-like systems could be adapted for other celestial bodies taking into account aspects such as their shape, dynamics, perturbations, as well as exploration priority regions. The baseline LNSS constellation of three circular orbits with three satellites each has been chosen as the result of multicriterion analysis of orbital stability and geometry. Station keeping requires less than 15 m/s for 10 years without significant changes in navigation performance in the prioritized Polar Regions. The full cycle of LNSS operation from ODTS and signal generation to its reception, processing, and obtaining navigation solutions has been simulated to obtain positioning accuracy for different types of users. Positioning accuracy of space users in approach/departure phases, in near-lunar orbits, as well as static users on a lunar surface is confirmed on a level of a few tens of meters. The same accuracy is achievable by dynamic users on a lunar surface during route stops or also in motion in case of LNSS constellation expansion or deployment of ground-based augmentation beacons in on-site exploration zones.

Abstract:Satellite communication-navigation integrated technology allows users to achieve communication and navigation at the same time. Compared with an autarkical and independent satellite communication or satellite navigation system，a communication-navigation integrated system is more comprehensive. At present，BeiDou Navigation Satellite System can provide radio navigation service and radio data service，and most satellites in the world can also measure the distance between satellite and ground station during communicating，even providing time base for satellite. However，there is still a long way to go from these existing practices to the ideal integrated communication and navigation system. Based on satellite communication，a new integrated communication-navigation architecture is proposed，and a case of using the lunar relay communication system to achieve lunar navigation in the setting of manned lunar exploration was given. The simulation results show that the proposed communication and navigation integrated system not only provides communication services，but also provides high precision positioning and timing services for the users on the lunar surface.

Abstract:In order to achieve high accuracy of autonomous navigation for Mars probes, an integrated navigation method using X-ray pulsar measurement and optical data of viewing Martian moons is proposed. For single X-ray pulsar measurement on board a Mars probe, navigation accuracy is low due to its poor observability. On the other hand, Phobos and Deimos, two natural moons of Mars, are important optical navigation information sources available for Mars missions. However, the Martian moons ephemeris bias and the differences between barycentre and centre of brightness of Martian moons will result in low navigation accuracy. The method of integrated navigation using X-ray pulsar measurement and optical data of viewing Martian moons can overcome the defect and achieve accurate navigation. Two sequential orbit determination algorithms, Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF), are compared. The simulation results show this method can obtain high autonomous navigation accuracy during the phase of a probe orbiting Mars.

Abstract:This paper examines the effectiveness of small star trackers for orbital estimation. Autonomous optical navigation has been used for some time to provide local estimates of orbital parameters during close approach to celestial bodies. These techniques have been used extensively on spacecraft dating back to the Voyager missions, but often rely on long exposures and large instrument apertures. Using a hyperbolic Mars approach as a reference mission, we present an EKF-based navigation filter suitable for nanosatellite missions. Observations of Mars and its moons allow the estimator to correct initial errors in both position and velocity. A new autonomous celestial navigation method for the lunar rover

Abstract:A secure and autonomous navigation system is needed for the lunar rover in future lunar missions in case of emergencies. Celestial navigation is a very attractive solution for long distance navigation on the Moon without the need of ground navigation aids. It only uses star altitudes, which are measured by a high accuracy star sensor and inertial measurement unit (IMU) to estimate the position of the rover. The navigational accuracy of this method depends largely on the accuracy of measurements, so the measurement errors have a great impact on the navigational performance. A new autonomous celestial navigation method for the lunar rover is presented in this paper, which uses the augmented state unscented particle filter (ASUPF) to deal with the systematic error and random error in the measurements. The validity and feasibility of this new method is tested and examined by the hardware-in-loop test. A position estimation error within 60 m is obtained. Compared to the conventional method, this method shows better navigation performance and higher adaptability to these measurement errors.

Abstract:The launch of a spacecraft into the stable, high polar orbits of a Moon artificial satellite is considered. These orbits can be used to construct a lunar multifunctional satellite system, as well as a near-Moon orbital spaceport. Analysis and comparison of three schemes of direct spacecraft transfer from the Earth to the Moon—with a one-, two-. and three-impulse maneuver of transition into the final orbit—are performed. In particular, the energy, geometrical, and temporal characteristics of a two-impulse transfer obtained under significant influence of gravitational perturbations are compared with their one- and three-impulse analogues.

Abstract:Optical navigation on a CubeSat must rely on the best extraction of the directions of some beacons from on-board images. We present an experiment on OPS-SAT, a CubeSat of the European Space Agency (ESA), that will characterize an onboard algorithm to this aim, named Angle-based Correlation (AbC). OPS-SAT is a 3-unit CubeSat with an Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS) and an imager that have proved their reliability with typical performance at CubeSat scale. We selected a few star-fields that all present enough visible stars within a 10 ? field of view. When our experiment is run, OPS-SAT is pointed to the most convenient star-field at that time. There, the star-field is imaged and subwindows are extracted from the image around the expected location of each star, based on the attitude-quaternion reported by the ADCS. The AbC reconstructs the absolute direction of the central body, in principle unknown, which is the pointed known star in the experiment. The method intensively uses the quaternion algebra. The beacon location is first consolidated in the field of view with the AbC. Then, the field of view is finely positioned against the sky, again with the AbC. A covariance is associated with the found beacon direction. Our experiment with OPS-SAT manages the pointing and the imager, and processes the taken images. Then, it downloads the on-board computed absolute directions and their covariances, to be compared with the actual directions. After a campaign of intensive use of the experiment, the statistical performance of the algorithm will be established and compared to the on-board computed covariances. As a bonus, an assessment of OPS-SAT's inertial pointing stability will be available. The AbC can theoretically get rid of the Attitude Control Error (ACE) of the platform and of the Attitude Knowledge Error (AKE) estimated by the ADCS, and potentially converge to (...)

Performance Simulation of Autonomous Solar Navigation

Abstract:The performance of a new type of autonomous solar navigation system is analyzed in this paper. Such efficient autonomous navigation systems will reduce operation costs and alleviate the Deep Space Network workload in future space missions. The method is demonstrated by applying it to the STEREO mission. Orbit determination is simulated through the use of the mission-defined trajectory profile and solar angular data acquired by the on-board science instruments currently being considered. The study shows that the orbit solution derived by this new type of solar navigation system can satisfy the mission's navigation requirements; the position uncertainties obtained in the simulations are well below the mission allowable values, and are comparable to the results obtained with the conventional Doppler tracking system in some cases.
