Abstract:Present-day IP transport platforms being what they are, it will never be possible to rule out conflicts between the available services. That being the case, the logical conclusion is that the quality of service (QoS) must always be quantifiable no matter what. This goes for real-time / time-critical services such as VoIP, VToIP and IPTV more than others. This paper focuses on the service IPTV, in which video content is encoded using a number of different methods. At present, Standard H.264/AVC is the most commonly used method. This paper will compare it with two new encoding methods, H.265/HEVC and VP9. Two scenarios—a loss-free and a lossy IP environment—were devised for the comparison. The quality of the video stream was outputted as both a MOS value and a PSNR value for both scenarios, the ultimate goal being to determine the benefits and drawbacks of using the different encoding methods for the service IPTV.
