Abstract:Photophysical and photochemical properties of phenothiazine and N-alkylphenothiazines (alkyl = methyl, ethyl, isobutyl, phenyl, benzyl) in acetonitrile were studied by means of nanosecond laser flash photolysis. Transient absorption measurements showed that the excited triplet state, radical cation, neutral radical, dimeric radical cation and dimeric dication were formed during the photolysis. The kinetics of the formation and conversion of the transient species was investigated. The deprotonation of the phenothiazine radical cation (PTH+) to give the neutral radical PT+ was prevented by the presence of tetracyanoethylene (TCNE). The mechanism of the interaction of phenothiazines and TCNE is discussed.

Abstract:Organic photoredox catalysis has become a useful tool for the development of metal-free radical reactions. Recently, we have reported that 1,4-bis(diphenylamino)naphthalene N serves as an efficient photoredox catalyst for radical monofluoromethylation with N-tosyl-S-monofluoromethyl-S-phenylsulfoximine 2. In this paper, we report the preparation and photo- and electrochemical properties of (diarylamino)naphthalene derivatives, 1,4-bis(di(p-tert-butylphenyl)amino)naphthalene 1a, 1,5-bis(di(p-tert-butylphenyl)amino)naphthalene 1b, and 1-(di(p-tert-butylphenyl)amino)naphthalene) 1c, as supported by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent-DFT calculations. In addition, their performance of photocatalysis has been evaluated by means of methoxy-monofluoromethylation of aromatic alkenes. Laser flash photolysis shows that the fluorescence of 1a in the excited state is efficiently quenched by 2 (quenching rate constant kq = ca. 2 × 109 M-1 s-1). Transient absorption spectroscopic analyses reveal that the excited species of 1a in the presence of 2 starts decreasing in ca. 100 ps, suggesting the occurrence of fast electron-transfer processes. These results lead to the unconventional concept for the catalyst design, that is, long lifetime of the excited state is not always a requisite for efficient photoredox catalysts.

Abstract:Confronted with the imperative crisis of water quality deterioration, the pursuit of state-of-the-art decontamination technologies for a sustainable future never stops. Fitting into the framework of suitability, advanced oxidation processes have been demonstrated as powerful technologies to produce highly reactive radicals for the degradation of toxic and refractory contaminants. Therefore, investigations on their radical-induced degradation have been the subject of scientistic and engineering interests for decades. To better understand the transient nature of these radical species and rapid degradation processes, laser flash photolysis (LFP) has been considered as a viable and powerful technique due to its high temporal resolution and rapid response. Although a number of studies exploited LFP for one (or one class of) specific reaction(s), reactions of many possible contaminants with radicals are largely unknown. Therefore, there is a pressing need to critically review its implementation for kinetic quantification and mechanism elucidation. Within this context, we introduce the development process and milestones of LFP with emphasis on compositions and operation principles. We then compare the specificity and suitability of different spectral modes for monitoring radicals and their decay kinetics. Radicals with high environmental relevance, namely hydroxyl radical, sulfate radical, and reactive chlorine species, are selected, and we discuss their generation, detection, and implications within the frame of LFP. Finally, we highlight remaining challenges and future perspectives. This review aims to advance our understandings of the implementation of LFP in radical-induced transient processes, and yield new insights for extrapolating this pump-probe technique to make significant strides in environmental implications.
Studies on photoinduced H-atom and electron transfer reactions of o-naphthoquinones by laser flash photolysis.

Abstract:The quenching of the triplets of 1,2-naphthoquinone (NQ) and 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulfonic acid sodium salt (NQS) by various electron and H-atom donors was investigated by laser flash photolysis measurement in acetonitrile and benzene. The results showed that the reactivities and configurations of (3)NQ*((3)NQS*) are governed by solvent polarity. All the quenching rate constants (k(q)) measured in benzene are larger than those in acetonitrile. The SO3Na substituent at the C-4 position of NQS makes 3NQS* more reactive than 3NQ* in electron/H-atom transfer reactions. Large differences of kq values were discovered in H-atom transfer reactions for alcohols and phenols, which can be explained by different H-abstraction mechanisms. Detection of radical cations of amines/anilines in time-resolved transient absorption spectra confirms an electron transfer mechanism. Triplets are identified as precursors of formed radical anions of NQ and NQS in photoinduced reactions. The dependence of electron transfer rate constants on the free energy changes (Delta G) was treated by using the Rehm-Weller equation. For the four anilines with different substituents on the para or meta position of amidocyanogen, good correlation between log k(q) values with Hammett sigma constants testifies the correctness of empirical Hammett equation. Charge density distributions, adiabatic ionization/affinity potentials and redox potentials of NQ ( NQS) and some quenchers were studied by quantum chemistry calculation.

Abstract:Metrafenone (MF), as a new type of benzophenone fungicide, has been widely used in agriculture and is persistent in the environment. Understanding its photochemical fate is essential for the comprehensive evaluation of its ecological risk. In the present work, we reported a detailed study on the photochemical transformation of MF in aqueous solution under irradiation (at lambda > 290 nm using a high pressure mercury lamp). MF was relatively photo-reactive showing a low polychromatic quantum yield of photolysis (1.06 x 10(-4), 20 mu M) counterbalanced by a significant light absorption above 290 nm. A series of photoproducts were identified by high resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS) analysis, and three different pathways, including oxidation of the methyl group, debromination and replacement of bromine by hydroxyl group were proposed. Among them, debromination was identified as the dominating process that could be achieved via homolytic C-Br bond cleavage from singlet and triplet MF, as confirmed by laser flash photolysis (LFP) experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Toxicity assessment revealed that photochemical degradation reduced the ecotoxicity of MF efficiently. Nitrate ions and humic acid promoted the MF photolysis, while bicarbonate exhibited no effect. Results obtained in this work would increase our understanding on the environmental fate of MF in sunlit surface waters.

Abstract:The reactivity of the nitrate radical towards selected aromatic compounds in aqueous solution has been investigated using a laser photolysis/long-path laser absorption technique (LP-LPLA). The reactions of NO3 radicals with (1) phenol, (2) 4-nitrophenol, (3) 2,4-dinitrophenol, ( 4) ortho - and (5) para-cresol, (6) 2-nitro-p-cresol, (7) 2,6-dinitro-p-cresol, (8) benzoic acid, (9) 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, (10) 3-nitrobenzoic acid, (11) 4-nitrobenzoic acid, (12) 4-cyanobenzoic acid, (13) 4-methoxybenzoic acid, (14) 4-methylbenzoic acid and (15) 4-methyl-3-nitrobenzoic acid were investigated at T = 298 K. The influence of ionic strength on the reaction rate for the reactions of NO3 with phenol and benzoic acid was studied by varying the electrolyte concentration of the aqueous solution. From these experiments limiting rate constants for zero ionic strength and for I --> infinity could be determined. Additionally, the in uence of pH on the reaction of NO3 with selected aromatics was studied. From the derived data the limiting rate constants for the reaction of NO3 with the undissociated aromatic compound and its anion were determined.

Abstract:The advanced strategy using Lewis base‐boryl radicals (LBRs) has recently been proposed for the addition of alkyl substituents to the full‐carbon quaternary center of an organic molecule. However, as the rate‐determining step in the whole route, reaction rate constants of LBRs with substrates are extremely lacking. In this paper, 4‐dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP)‐BH2• was selected as a representative of LBRs, and its reactions with six monochloro‐substituted substrates, including three methyl chlorobenzoates and three chlorinated acetanilides were studied in experiments and theoretical calculations. The bimolecular reaction rate constants, kq, were determined using laser flash photolysis approach. By comparing activation energies along the two addition pathways, we have clarified the rate‐determining step as the attacking to carbonyl oxygen instead of chlorine atom. Furthermore, noncovalent interaction (NCI) analyses on these substrates indicate that weak interactions, such as hydrogen‐bonding and van der Waals interactions, have significant influence on the reactivity of these substrates. Our study provides concrete clues to extend this synthetic strategy.

Abstract:The quenching behavior of the triplets of C60 by various aniline derivatives (1a–d and 2a–e) was investigated by means of laser flash photolysis in benzonitrile at 293K. Electron transfer process was proposed to be the main mechanism because of the direct detection of radical ions of aniline derivatives and C60 in time-resolved transient absorption spectra. The quenching rate constants (kq) of 3C60* by different substrates determined at 740nm approach or reach the diffusion-controlled limit. DFT method was employed to calculate the unknown oxidation potentials of substrates in solution. With these Eox values, free energy changes (ΔG) were obtained through Rehm–Weller equation. Dependence of observed quenching rate constants on the free energy changes further indicates the photoinduced reactions between 3C60* and substrates proceed through an electron transfer mechanism. Obtained kq values for the aniline derivatives are impacted obviously by ground-state configurations and the kinds substituents quantified by Hammett σ constant. Good correlation between logkq and σ values conforms to the empirical Hammett equation. A more negative ρ value (−3.356) was gained for anilines (2a–e) than that of N,N-dimethylanilines (1a–d) (−1.382), which suggests a more susceptible reactivity for the former substrates. Charge density distribution of reaction center “N” originated from quantum calculation supports this suggestion. In addition, a relationship between quenching rate constants and solvent viscosity was gained from C60/dimethyl-p-toluidine system in altered mixtures of acetonitrile and toluene.

Abstract:The 355nm photon-initiated microscopic reaction mechanisms of the mixed aqueous solution of nitrobenzene and nitrous acid in the presence or absence of O2 were studied by the laser flash photolysis technique. The main transient absorption peaks in the recorded spectra were assigned and the growth/decay trends of several transient species were investigated. It was found that the OH radical formed from the photolysis of nitrous acid triggered most of the subsequent radical reactions. The rate constant of the reaction between OH radical and nitrobenzene was measured to be (3.4±0.1)×109lmol−1s−1. The product from this reaction, namely C6H5NO2–OH adduct, was found to react with O2 to yield C6H5NO2–OHO2 adduct with a rate constant of (1.6±0.2)×109lmol−1s−1. Final steady-state products were identified by GC/MS analysis and were in accordance with the transient spectroscopic results. The possible reaction pathways were proposed.

Abstract:The photolysis of four typical NBFRs, hexabromobenzene (HBB), pentabromotoluene (PBT), pentabromobenzyl acrylateare (PBBA) and pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB), were explored under different irradiation light wavelengths, initial concentrations and organic solvents. Density functional theory was used for chemical calculation to explore the internal mechanism of solvent effect. All degradation kinetics conformed to the first-order kinetic model. Under different irradiation light wavelengths, the degradation rates were in the following order: 180~400 nm (0.1702~0.3008 min−1) > 334~365 nm (0.0265~0.0433 min−1) > 400~700 nm (0.0058~0.0099 min−1). When the initial concentration varied from 0.25 mg/L to 1 mg/L, the degradation rate decreased from 0.0379~0.0784 min−1 to 0.0265~0.0433 min−1 under 334~365 nm irradiation, which might be attributed to the reduction in light energy received per unit area and competition from intermediate metabolites. In different organic solvents, the degradation rates were in the order of acetone (0.1702~0.3008 min−1) > toluene (0.0408~0.0534 min−1) > n-hexane (0.0124~0.0299 min−1). Quantum chemical calculation and analysis showed that the energy change in electron transfer between solvent and NBFRs was the key factor to solvent effect in the degradation of NBFRs. The active sites and degradation pathways of NBFRs were also speculated, the nucleophilic reaction of the Br atom on a benzene ring was the main process of photodegradation and it was preferential to remove the bromine and then the ethyl group on the benzene ring. Our research will be helpful in predicting and evaluating their photochemical behavior in different environment conditions.

Abstract:The pH effects on the photochemical reaction of amino acids and related dipeptides with 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4NQO) as a photosensitizer have been investigated by laser flash photolysis. The obtained kinetic parameters show that the electron transfer from Tryptophan (Trp), Tyrosine (Tyr) as well as dipeptides containing Trp and/or Tyr residue to triplet 4NQO ( T 4NQO) are efficient, but inefficient from methionine (Met) and dipeptides containing neither Trp nor Tyr. The result was supported by the calculated values of the free energy change from measured oxidation potentials for the electron transfer. It was demonstrated that Trp and Tyr residues are initial reaction sites with T 4NQO, while Tyr/O ⋅ radical may be final species for Trp-Tyr dipeptide. In acidic aqueous solutions, the self-quenching rate constants of T 4NQO and the rate constants of electron transfer from amino acids to T 4NQO decrease with decreasing pH. In alkaline solutions, amino acids are easily oxidized by 4NQO under irradiation of laser pulse, and no transient absorption signal was observed.

Abstract:The oxidative splitting reaction of cyclobutane dimethylthymine dimer (DMTD) by triplet excited state of 9,10-anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (3AQS∗) was investigated using 355nm laser flash photolysis technique combined with steady-state analysis. The transient absorption spectra for interaction of 3AQS∗ with DMTD in aqueous solution were observed. Comparing to the transient absorption spectra of pure anthraquinone-2-sulfonate aqueous solution reported previously, two new absorption bands from photolysis of AQS aqueous solution containing DMTD were assigned to the absorption of AQS radical anion and dimethylthymine monomer (DMT) radical cation, respectively. A splitting reaction of DMTD via electron transfer to 3AQS∗ was demonstrated, and the quenching rate constant of 3AQS∗ by DMTD was determined. Furthermore, steady-state photolysis results show that 3AQS∗ initiates the oxidative splitting reaction.
Solvent Effects of Photoinduced Electron Transfer Reactions of Triplet Fluorenone with Amines

Abstract:The property of the lowest excited triplet state of fluorenone (FL) in acetonitrile, ethyl acetate, toluene, cyclohexane has been investigated using time-resolved laser flash photolysis. The appearances of the corresponding cation radicals and anion radicals suggest that the electron transfer reaction occurs between 3FL* and amines. Experimental results show a decrease in the quenching rate constants along with reducing solvent polarity. The change of quenching rate constants of the FL excited triplet with the three N,N-dimethylaniline derivatives are explained using the Hammett constant.

Abstract:Over the past few years, photoredox catalysis has led to significant transformations in modern synthetic chemistry. It has allowed the development of new synthetic pathways for the assembly of complex molecular scaffolds using light as a driving force. However, investigations of the ultrafast light-initiated mechanisms required for these reactions are relatively scarce. Here we follow the ultrafast dynamics of a red-light organic photocatalyst, N,N′-di-n-propyl-1,13-dimethoxyquinacridinium (nPr-DMQA+), in the aerobic oxidative hydroxylation of phenylboronic acid using transient absorption and time correlated single photon counting spectroscopy. Global target analysis supports a reaction mechanism that proceeds through the excited triplet state of nPr-DMQA+, leading to the generation of a superoxide anion and subsequent oxidative hydroxylation. The triplet pathway proposed here has relatively wide application in organic photocatalytic oxidative reactions including those using methylene blue and other organic dyes as catalysts. Observation of the ultrafast dynamics of nPr-DMQA+ as it acts as a catalyst can provide insights to improve the efficiency of oxidative hydroxylation reactions and the mechanisms of photoredox catalysis more broadly.

Abstract:Laser flash photolysis studies (l = 355 nm) on the characterization and reactivity for the triplet excited state of 2-methoxythioxanthone, 2-benzyloxythioxanthone, and 2-(n-propoxy) thioxanthone revealed that the transients generated in their excitation, in acetonitrile, have absorption bands with maxima at 310 and 620 nm. These transients decayed by a mixed 1st and 2nd order kinetics, with a lifetime of 5.3 ms for 2-methoxythioxanthone and benzyloxythioxanthone and 3.9 ms for 2-(n-propoxy) thioxanthone. In methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol, a new absorption at 430-460 nm was observed, which was attributed to their corresponding ketyl radical (the second-order quenching rate constant (kq) is ca. 105 L mol-1 s-1). The energy transfer rate constants for trans-stilbene, 1-methylnaphthalene, and 1,3-cyclohexadiene were diffusion-controlled, indicating a triplet energy for these alkoxy thioxanthones higher than 61 kcal mol-1. The quenching rate constant observed for 1,4-cyclohexadiene (ca.109 L mol-1 s-1) suggests that the lowest energy triplet excited state for these thioxanthones must have nπ* character. For phenols and indole (kq ca. 109 L mol-1 s-1), the reaction mechanism must involve the initial formation of a triplet exciplex, followed by a coupled electron/proton transfer. For triethylamine and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (kq ca. 109 L mol-1 s-1) it was observed the formation of the radical anion of the alkoxy thioxanthones formed from electron transfer (l = 410 nm).

Abstract:Time resolved laser photolysis was carried out to study the reaction of NO3. radical toward a series of organic phosphates (tributylphosphate (TBP) and its analogues) with different length of side alkyl groups such as CH3, C2H5, C3H7, CH(CH3)(2) and C4H9 in water, acetonitrile, and the mixtures of water and acetonitrile, respectively. For comparison, a similar investigation on SO4.- radical was also conducted. The oxidation reaction of NO3. and SO4.- radical with the phosphates was attributed to mainly an H-abstract reaction. The kinetics study shows that the rate constants of the reaction between the two radicals and phosphates increase remarkably with increasing of the length of the alkyl groups, e.g. in the case of NO3. radical in acetonitrile, the rate constant increases by almost 4 orders of magnitude from TMP (-CH3) to TBP (-C4H9). The composition of the solvent also greatly affects the reactivity but it exhibits an opposite effect of the two radicals, the rate constant of NO3. increases with the mote fraction of acetonitrile while that of SO4.- decreases. The present study would be helpful for understanding the mechanism of deterioration of TBP in the Purex process.

Abstract:Using methods of time-resolved and stationary photolysis, HPLC-MS and quantum-chemical calculations by the DFT method, the mechanism of direct UV photolysis of the antibiotic chloramphenicol (CAP) was established. For the first time, short-lived intermediates formed during photolysis were detected. The primary photoprocess is the cleavage of the β-C-C bond relative to the aromatic system with the formation of 4-nitrobenzylalcohol radical and residual aliphatic radical. The first radical in deoxygenated solutions predominantly transforms into para -nitrobenzaldehyde and its secondary photolysis products. In the presence of oxygen, the aromatic radical and para -nitrobenzaldehyde are transformed into para -nitrosobenzoic and para -nitrobenzoic acids as a result of reaction with reactive oxygen species (ROS). Formation of ROS is provoked by reactions of aliphatic radical with dissolved oxygen, so this radical is very important for CAP degradation. The quantum yield of direct photolysis of CAP is ∼3% and does not depend on the presence of dissolved oxygen and on the change of the excitation wavelength in the range of 254–308 nm. Obtained data are important for further understanding of the transformation pathways of CAP and similar PPCP in natural and wastewaters under the action of sunlight and artificial UV radiation.
