Abstract:Sensors play vital roles in industry and healthcare due to the significance of controlling the presence of different substances in industrial processes, human organs, and the environment. Electrochemical sensors have gained more attention recently than conventional sensors, including optical fibers, chromatography devices, and chemiresistors, due to their better versatility, higher sensitivity and selectivity, and lower complexity. Herein, we review transition metal carbides (TMCs) and transition metal oxides (TMOs) as outstanding materials for electrochemical sensors. We navigate through the fabrication processes of TMCs and TMOs and reveal the relationships among their synthesis processes, morphological structures, and sensing performance. The state-of-the-art biological, gas, and hydrogen peroxide electrochemical sensors based on TMCs and TMOs are reviewed, and potential challenges in the field are suggested. This review can help others to understand recent advancements in electrochemical sensors based on transition metal oxides and carbides.

Abstract:Developing efficient catalysts is vital for the application of electrochemical sensors. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), with high porosity, large specific surface area, good conductivity, and biocompatibility, have been widely used in catalysis, adsorption, separation, and energy storage applications. In this invited review, the recent advances of a novel MOF-based catalysts in electrochemical sensors are summarized. Based on the structure–activity–performance relationship of MOF-based catalysts, their mechanism as electrochemical sensor, including metal cations, synthetic ligands, and structure, are introduced. Then, the MOF-based composites are successively divided into metal-based, carbon-based, and other MOF-based composites. Furthermore, their application in environmental monitoring, food safety control, and clinical diagnosis is discussed. The perspective and challenges for advanced MOF-based composites are proposed at the end of this contribution.

Abstract:This study is on current developments concerning ferrocene (FC) and its derivatives on the basis of electrochemical biosensors and sensors. The distinct physiochemical characteristics of FC have enabled the development of new sensor devices, specifically electrochemical sensors. Several articles have focused on the implementation of FC as an electrode constituent while discussing its electrochemical behavior. Furthermore, typical FC-design-based biosensors and sensors are considered as well as practical examples. The favorable design of FC-based biosensors and general sensors needs adequate control of their chemical and physical characteristics in addition to their surface immobilization and functionalization.

Abstract:Carbon materials are one of the most fascinating materials because of their unique properties and potential use in several applications. They can be obtained from agricultural waste, organic polymers, or by using advanced synthesizing technologies. The carbon family is very wide, it includes classical activated carbons to more advanced types like carbon gels, graphene, and so on. The surface chemistry of these materials is one of the most interesting aspects to be studied. The incorporation of different types of chemical functionalities and/or heteroatoms such as O, N, B, S, or P on the carbon surface enables the modification of the acidic–basic character, hydrophilicity–hydrophobicity, and the electron properties of these materials, which in turn determines the final application. This book collects original research articles focused on the synthesis, properties, and applications of heteroatom-doped functional carbon materials.

Abstract:The rapid development of nanoscience and nanotechnology provides new opportunities for the sustainable progress of nanoscale catalysts (i.e., nanocatalysts). The introduction of nanocatalysts into electronic devices implants their novel functions into electronic sensing systems, resulting in the testing of many advanced electrochemical sensors and the fabrication of some highly sensitive, selective, and stable sensing platforms. In this Review, we will summarize recent significant progress on exploring advanced carbon nanomaterials (such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, highly ordered mesoporous carbons, and electron cyclotron resonance sputtered nanocarbon film) as nanoscale electrocatalysts (i.e., nanoelectrocatalysts) for constructing the catalytic nanointerfaces of electronic devices to achieve high-sensitivity and high-selectivity electrochemical sensors. Furthermore, different mechanisms for the extraordinary and unique electrocatalytic activities of these carbon nanomaterials will be also highlighted, compared and discussed. An outlook on the future trends and developments in this area will be provided at the end. Notably, to elaborate the nature of carbon nanomaterial, we will mainly focus on the electrocatalysis of single kind of carbon materials rather than their hybrid composite materials. We expect that advanced carbon nanomaterials with unique electrocatalytic activities will continue to attract increasing research interest and lead to new opportunities in various fields of research.

Abstract:In recent years, biomass carbon materials have received widespread attention in the field of electrochemical sensors. As a new type of renewable green energy, biomass carbon has the advantages of low cost and abundant resources. After special treatment, it can be used as an ideal electrode material. Since biomass carbon materials have diverse sources and their morphology is difficult to control, researchers have conducted in-depth research on their preparation process, morphology regulation and application. This review summarizes different biomass carbon structures and their preparation methods and explores the applications of these materials in electrochemical sensors. Modification of biomass carbon materials through pretreatment, physical and chemical activation, heteroatom doping, metal compound composite and other methods can make up for the deficiencies in its pore structure, electrical conductivity and surface wettability, thereby improving its electrochemical performance. The effects of different biomass sources, functional groups, constituent elements and modification methods on the morphology, structure and electrochemical properties of biomass carbon materials are discussed, and the applications of this type of material in biological molecules, heavy metal ions and pesticide residues are reviewed. Biomass carbon-based materials show great application potential and development prospects in the field of electrochemical sensors.

Abstract:Iron oxide nanostructures (IONs) in combination with graphene or its derivatives-e.g., graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide-hold great promise toward engineering of efficient nanocomposites for enhancing the performance of advanced devices in many applicative fields. Due to the peculiar electrical and electrocatalytic properties displayed by composite structures in nanoscale dimensions, increasing efforts have been directed in recent years toward tailoring the properties of IONs-graphene based nanocomposites for developing more efficient electrochemical sensors. In the present feature paper, we first reviewed the various routes for synthesizing IONs-graphene nanostructures, highlighting advantages, disadvantages and the key synthesis parameters for each method. Then, a comprehensive discussion is presented in the case of application of IONs-graphene based composites in electrochemical sensors for the determination of various kinds of (bio)chemical substances.

Abstract:The various forms of carbon nanostructures are providing extraordinary new opportunities that can revolutionize the way gas sensors, electrochemical sensors and biosensors are engineered. The great potential of carbon nanostructures as a sensing platform is exciting due to their unique electrical and chemical properties, highly scalable, biocompatible and particularly interesting due to the almost infinite possibility of functionalization with a wide variety of inorganic nanostructured materials and biomolecules. This opens a whole new pallet of specificity into sensors that can be extremely sensitive, durable and that can be incorporated into the ongoing new generation of wearable technology. Within this context, carbon-based nanostructures are amongst the most promising structures to be incorporated in a multi-functional platform for sensing. The present review discusses the various 1D, 2D and 3D carbon nanostructure forms incorporated into different sensor types as well as the novel functionalization approaches that allow such multi-functionality.

Abstract:As the development of global population and industry civilization, the accurate and sensitive detection of intended analytes is becoming an important and great challenge in the field of environmental, medical, and public safety. Recently, electrochemical biosensors have been constructed and used in sensing fields, such as antibiotics, pesticides, specific markers of cancer, and so on. Functional materials have been designed and prepared to enhance detection performance. Among all reported materials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are emerging as porous crystalline materials to construct electrochemical biosensors, because COFs have many unique advantages, including large surface area, high stability, atom-level designability, and diversity, to achieve a far better sensing performance. In this comprehensive review, we not only summarize state-of-the-art electrochemical biosensors based on COFs and their hybrid materials but also highlight and discuss some typical examples in detail. We finally provide the challenge and future perspective of COFs-based electrochemical biosensors.

Abstract:<p>Carbon-based functional nanomaterials have attracted remarkable attention from the scientific community for their unique combinations of advantageous chemical and physical properties, such as superb electrical conductivity, excellent heat conductivity, chemical stability, advanced optical properties, and high mechanical strength. Our research group has been very actively involved in the study and further development of carbon-based functional nanomaterials and their potential applications for many years. In this feature article, we introduce our recent endeavors in the development of carbon-based nanomaterials with superior functionalities for potential application in diverse fields including solar thermal fuels, advanced thermal management, and electrochemical energy storage. The key design concepts of these advanced functional nanomaterials are highlighted, specific synthesis strategies are discussed, their potential usage in devices and applications is emphasized, and background information is succinctly furnished wherever warranted. We begin with an overview on the chemistry of carbon nanomaterials, in which the synthesis and chemical functionalization of carbon nanotubes and graphene are introduced, respectively. We then showcase the design, fabrication and properties of different functional carbon nanomaterials for diverse applications, including photoactive azobenzene/carbon nanomaterials for solar thermal fuels and light-driven carbon-based actuators, advanced carbon nanomaterials with directional thermal conductivity, and carbon-based electrodes for electrochemical energy storage. Finally, we conclude by briefly summarizing the advantages of the application of functional carbon-based nanomaterials in various fields, and list challenges that remain to be solved and potential that remains to be tapped.</p>

Abstract:Due to the interesting physicochemical and biological properties of carbon-based nanomaterials and their large number of derivatives, these nanomaterials are going to be the best and first choice of scientists and industries. One of the attractive research area in which carbon-based nanomaterials have many applications, is the science of detection and measurement called biosensors. Some special properties like large surface-to-volume ratio, high electrical conductivity, chemical stability, strong mechanical strength, easy functionalization, biocompatibility, and biodegradability make these nanomaterials suitable to employ in biosensors transducers for improving signal processing. Recently, these biosensors have been used widely in the monitoring of disease progression, environmental pollution detection and measurement, food control, and drug discovery. Considering these substantial properties, using the carbon-based nanomaterials led to higher sensitivity with the lower limit of detection, wide linear range detection, and reusable sensors than conventional ones. This review is an overview of the most recent progress in the development of biosensors based on wide variety of carbon nanomaterials, including graphene, graphene oxide, and reduced graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, carbon dots, diamond, fullerene, carbon nanofibers, carbon nanohorns, nanoporous carbon, nano carbon black and their composites. In addition to the structure of the biosensor, an attempt has been made to discuss the multiple analytes such as glucose, antibody, dopamine, proteins, nucleic acids (DNA, RNA), and drugs which detected and measured by these biosensors.

Abstract:In this work, novel carbon materials are evaluated as transducers, stabilizers and mediators for the construction of amperometric biosensors. It is shown that materials such as fullerenes and carbon nanotubes are promising materials as electrochemical mediators and enzyme stabilizers. Additionally porous carbon and porous glassy carbon are excellent transducers for amperometric measurements, while they provide cavities adequate for enzyme immobilization. At the same time, the sensitivity to peroxide is shown to depend on the activation procedures. Treatment that introduces oxygen groups increases the sensitivity of the carbon-based sensor to hydrogen peroxide considerably. These materials are used for the construction, mediation and stabilization of glucose biosensor.

Abstract:Functionalized nanoporous carbon materials have attracted the colossal interest of the materials science fraternity owing to their intriguing physical and chemical properties including a well-ordered porous structure, exemplary high specific surface areas, electronic and ionic conductivity, excellent accessibility to active sites, and enhanced mass transport and diffusion. These properties make them a special and unique choice for various applications in divergent fields such as energy storage batteries, supercapacitors, energy conversion fuel cells, adsorption/separation of bulky molecules, heterogeneous catalysts, catalyst supports, photocatalysis, carbon capture, gas storage, biomolecule detection, vapour sensing and drug delivery. Because of the anisotropic and synergistic effects arising from the heteroatom doping at the nanoscale, these novel materials show high potential especially in electrochemical applications such as batteries, supercapacitors and electrocatalysts for fuel cell applications and water electrolysis. In order to gain the optimal benefit, it is necessary to implement tailor made functionalities in the porous carbon surfaces as well as in the carbon skeleton through the comprehensive experimentation. These most appealing nanoporous carbon materials can be synthesized through the carbonization of high carbon containing molecular precursors by using soft or hard templating or non-templating pathways. This review encompasses the approaches and the wide range of methodologies that have been employed over the last five years in the preparation and functionalisation of nanoporous carbon materials via incorporation of metals, non-metal heteroatoms, multiple heteroatoms, and various surface functional groups that mostly dictate their place in a wide range of practical applications.

Abstract:Many studies have addressed electrochemical biosensors because of their simple synthesis process, adjustability, simplification, manipulation of materials’ compositions and features, and wide ranges of detection of different kinds of biomedical analytes. Performant electrochemical biosensors can be achieved by selecting materials that enable faster electron transfer, larger surface areas, very good electrocatalytic activities, and numerous sites for bioconjugation. Several studies have been conducted on the metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as electrode modifiers for electrochemical biosensing applications because of their respective acceptable properties and effectiveness. Nonetheless, researchers face challenges in designing and preparing MOFs that exhibit higher stability, sensitivity, and selectivity to detect biomedical analytes. The present review explains the synthesis and description of MOFs, and their relative uses as biosensors in the healthcare sector by dealing with the biosensors for drugs, biomolecules, as well as biomarkers with smaller molecular weight, proteins, and infectious disease.

Abstract:The development of technology in the area of material science and nanotechnology is a worldwide concern to researchers for generating a substance by synthesizing nanoparticles with required properties. Carbonaceous materials have gained numerous interests because of their direct electron or charge transfer capacity between active site reception and functionalized nanoparticles without involvement of a mediator. However, among all existing materials, carbon nanotubes have been proven to elite beyond graphene. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) possess extraordinary electrochemical biosensing and gas sensing due to their specific properties. This encourages researchers to gain new ideas about construction and development of immunosensors, genosensors, enzymatic biosensors and specific gas sensors based on above nanoparticles. Qualification of working electrode via incorporation of two or more of these nanoparticles gives enhanced stability, better sensitivity and functionality to the sensor. This chapter reviews basic information about sensors, their types, functionalization, fabrication mechanisms and applications for future prospective.

Abstract:Electrochemical sensors are a class of sensors in which the electrode is the transducer element. In this type of sensor, an electrode is a critical component employed as a solid support for immobilizing biomolecules and electron movement. The material, fabrication approach, and design affect the electrode's structure and properties, which ultimately determine the biosensor's performance, including sensitivity, selectivity, limit of detection, and dynamic range. They also influence the biosensor's cost, manufacturability, disposability, and measurement capabilities. This review article describes recent advances in using non-modified and modified electrodes as support in electrochemical biosensors for the determination of biomolecules. It summarizes recent work on modifying electrodes using carbonaceous materials, conducting polymers, MXenes, and transition metal oxide nanomaterials. It also focuses on current techniques, types of materials, designs, simulation studies, and fabrication methods on unmodified and modified electrodes. Lastly, challenges in electrochemical sensors were identified, and future directions were presented comprehensively.

Abstract:Rapid and selective sensing of biological substances and pollutants is developing rapidly in medicine and environmental sciences. Sensing performance depends on the material used as electrode modifier. Here, metal–organic frameworks are promising due to their high surface area and porosity, and their ability to adsorb guest molecules, yet they are limited by low conductivity and luminescence. The low conductivity issue can be solved by combining metal–organic framework with carbon-based materials of high conductivity and mechanical strength. Here, we review the synthesis and sensing applications of composites of metal–organic frameworks and carbon-based materials. We discuss charge transfer mechanisms and synergistic effects. Electrochemical and optical sensors allow to analyze metal ions, organic pollutants and biochemical molecules with a lowest detection limit of 0.12 nM.
