Abstract:An advanced biological water purification product Novel Mass Bio System (MBS) with 2-5 mm side length and 1.02-1.08 specific gravity was employed in this study to treat high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen in comprehensive industrial wastewater. MBS is a cubic particle mixed in a proper ratio of microbial liquid, bamboo powdered activated carbon and waterborne polyurethane gel. The comparison experiment between MBS and Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) carrier demonstrates that using MBS is advantageous due to better removal rate of ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) 95% and total nitrogen (TN) 90%, while MBBR removal rate of NH-(+)(4)-N 80% and TN 75%, respectively. The study examined the feasibility of using Novel Mass Bio System and Anoxic/Oxic treatment process for advanced treatment of comprehensive industrial wastewater having high NH4+-N. The experimental results showed that this system could effectively deal with high concentration of NH4+-N, chemical oxygen demand (COD), TN removal and remain in a stable level when the operational parameters altered. The excellent performance was obtained at an HRT of 24 h. With an influent average concentration of NH4+-N 623-642 mg/L, TN 675-712 mg/L, and COD 1012-1124 mg/L, the effluent NH2+-N, TN, COD, could be decreased to 10 mg/L, 80 mg/L and 50 mg/L, respectively. The maximum removal efficiencies of NH4+-N, TN, and COD were respectively 98%, 88%, and 95%. Dosing with MBS can effectively improve the removal rate of NH4+-N, and carrier additive is simple. It is suitable for the old plants as the effluent can meets strict regulatory requirements for discharge level without the reconstruction of the tank. Therefore, the MBS is a non-toxic and promising cleaner technology for advanced treatment in engineering applications. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this study, a Novel Mass Bio System (MBS), a suspended biologically activated carbon granular carrier cubic particle with 2-5mm side length and 1.02-1.08 specific gravity was developed for advanced treatment of coal gasification wastewater. A laboratory scale anaerobic AnaEG (advanced anaerobic expanded granular sludge bed)-primary aerobic BioAX (a novel environmental biotechnological aerobic process with internal circulation)-MBS aerobic fluidized bed nitrification bioreactor-MBS expended bed denitrification bioreactor-secondary aerobic BioAX reactor system was operated over a period of 260 days. With an influent concentration of chemical oxygen demand (COD) 3000 mg L-1, total phenol (TP) 300 mg L-1, and ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) 149 mg L-1, the effluent COD, TP, NH4+-N, could be decreased to 159 mg L-1, 6 mg L-1 and 0.12 mg L-1, respectively. The maximum removal efficiencies of COD, TP, and NH4+-N were respectively 94.7%, 98%, and 99.9%. With hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 36 h, methane content was 60% and methane productivity was 0.11 L CH4/g COD. Pyrosequencing analysis showed the enrichment of 'rare microbes'. Contrary to expectation, nitrifying bacteria, Ohtaekwangia (Bacteroidetes) was the most abundant rare bacteria with 37.1% of the microbial community entrapped in MBS.

Abstract:As a novel trend, solid carbon sources are applied to act as electron donors and biofilm carrier in biological denitrification process. In this study, simultaneous nitrate and ammonium removal process in an airlift sequencing batch reactor using 3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate (PHBV) as carbon source and biofilm carrier under intermittent aeration conditions was established to treat effluent of synthetic marine recirculating aquaculture system. The results showed that maximum nitrate and ammonia nitrogen removal rates of 0.45 and 0.09 kg m- 3 d-1 were achieved. No significant nitrite accumulation was found during 200-day operation, while effluent dissolved organic carbon accumulation and particle size reduction significantly increased. Microbial community analysis and batch tests illuminate that the generated sludge and attached biofilm played important roles in nitrogen removal. This study demonstrates the potential mechanism for the nitrogen removal process mediated by 3-hydroxybutyrateco-3-hydroxyvalerate and provide a new idea for the alternative solutions of solid carbon sources.
A Novel Bio-film Wastewater Treatment System Using Encapsulated Microbes

Abstract:The untreated or incomplete disposal of nitrogen pollutants in the wastewater can cause great harm to the environment. A large amount of ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N) will consume dissolved oxygen and cause eutrophication. The conventional wastewater treatment process in Malaysia is not efficient enough to remove the NH3-N. Most of the sewage treatment plants (STPs) in Malaysia are open structures which occupy a large area and emit stench. The existing STPs are not suitable for construction in the compact urban areas and some of these STPs operation are costly. This study designs a novel biological water purification system using a bio-film reactor with encapsulated microbes that is known as Mass Bio System (MBS). The MBS had been used in the east of Asia to treat high concentration of NH3-N in the industrial wastewater with high efficiency. MBS has not been reported to treat domestic wastewater. This paper reports the adaptability and verification of the new sewage treatment system based on MBS to treat domestic wastewater in Malaysia. The study will dynamically monitor the key parameters and compared with the conventional extended aeration (EA) process that is the most common STP applied in Malaysia using the same influent conditions. The aim is to verify that the MBS can treat the wastewater to meet the local emission standard where the water discharge shows the characteristics well below the discharge limits. The study showed that the average effluent and removal efficiency of NH3-N was approximately 2 mg/L and 88.6 % (with maximum 99.7 % removal). All evaluated parameters in the MBS showed stability of effluent characteristics and met the requirements of Malaysian sewerage industry guidelines. MBS also offers the co-benefits of energy, and space saving than the conventional process. The process is recommended as an efficient sewage treatment system in Malaysia and other countries with similar climatic conditions.

Abstract:Innovative removal of toxic nitrite and ammonia is one of the key approaches for efficient aquaculture biotechnology. This study suggests a fast removal technique of high-levels of nitrite and ammonia using recirculating aquaculture wastewater at 30‚Äį salinity. Four lab-scale moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs; R1, R2, R3, and R4) were operated in parallel for 56 days with different combinations of mature and fresh biofilms on biocarriers at 30% filling ratio. Nitrogen removal efficiency, biofilm physicochemical properties, and microbial analyses were conducted using PCR and sequencing techniques at the region of the 16S ribosomal RNA. The results showed that R4 (using mature biofilms) recorded the highest nitrite and ammonia removal (99.6% and 95.3%, respectively) compared to the control, R1 (94.1% and 89.4%). Meanwhile, the removal rate of ammonia in R4 was significantly the fastest compared to other reactors. Partial Least Squares-Discriminant Multivariate Analysis (PLS-DA) model showed a good prediction with very high accuracy and prediction (Q2¬†>¬†0.8) for the first three principal components pertaining to nitrite and ammonia removal. Planktosalinus genus was the most abundant in R4, while proteobacteria phylum was the dominant, followed by Marinobacter and Nitrospina in all reactors. Overall, the use of mature biofilms in MBBR was proven to increase bacterial diversity, enhancing nitrite and ammonia removal efficiency.

Abstract:Excessive discharge of ammonia nitrogen wastewater from intensive aquaculture has worsened in recent years. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop an effective and energy-saving denitrification technology. This study intends to adopt a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) to remove ammonia nitrogen through the combination of adsorption and shortcut simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND). The research focuses on the operational parameters and regeneration mechanism of the MBBR adsorption-shortcut SND process. The optimal operating parameters in the adsorption stage were a hydraulic retention time of 8 h and an agitation rate of 120 r/min. For the shortcut SND stage, the ideal optimal parameters were two times alkalinity and dissolved oxygen (DO) 1.0 mg/L. Under optimal operating parameters conditions, the SND rate, TN removal rate, NH4+-N removal rate and nitrite accumulation rate were 89.1%, 84.0%, 94.3%, and 86.4%, respectively. The synergetic actions of ion exchange and microorganisms were the main driving force for regenerating ceramsite zeolite components. The synergistic inhibitory effect of high-concentration free ammonia and low-level DO on nitrite-oxidizing bacteria was the key to achieving stable and efficient NO2−-N accumulation. NO2−-N produced in shortcut nitrification entered the ceramsite through complex mass transfer, and denitrifying bacteria can reduce these NO2−-N to N2.

Abstract:The presence of pollutants in aqueous solution mainly from hazardous heavy metals and metalloids is creating an environmental and social problem. The ammonia and nitrates are one of the major groundwater contaminants present in the rural areas. A nitrate was regulated in drinking water quality mainly due to excess amounts can cause methemoglobinemia disease. Ammonia in both gaseous and liquid form can be irritating to the eyes, respiratory tract failure and skin due to its alkaline nature. The biological effects of ammonia and nitrates in humans after acute exposures are dose-related depend on their concentration; the amount is taken by the body and duration of exposure. Biosorption is a physiochemical process that occurs naturally in certain biomass which allows it to passively concentrate and bind contaminants onto its cellular structure. It is metabolically passive process not require energy and amount of contaminants in sorbent can remove is dependent on kinetic equilibrium and composition of the sorbents at cellular surface. Every biosorbent had different physical, chemical and biological properties for heavy metals removal by biosorption from the water. The oxygen functional groups are very important characteristics of biosorbents because they measured the surface properties and hence their quality as biosorbents. The analysis of isotherm data by fitting them to different models is important to find a sustainable model that can be used. From the biosorption isotherms describe how the sorbate molecules are distributed between the liquid phase and solid phase when the system reaches equilibrium. The process can be made economical by regenerating and reusing of biosorbent after removing the metals. Various bioreactors can be used in biosorption for the removal of metal ions from large volume of water.

Abstract:Nitrogen removal performance and nitrifying population dynamics were investigated in a redox stratified membrane biofilm reactor (RSMBR) under oxygen limited condition to treat ammonium-rich wastewater. When the NHt 4 + -N loading rate increased from 11.1±1.0 to 37:2 ± 3:2 gNHt 4 + -N·m −2 ·d −1 , the nitrogen removal in the RSMBR system increased from 18.0±9.6 mgN·d −1 to 128.9±61.7 mgN·d −1 . Shortcut nitrogen removal was achieved with nitrite accumulation of about 22:3 ± 5:3 mgNO 2 − -N·L −1 . Confocal micrographs showed the stratified distributions of nitrifiers and denitrifiers in the membrane aerated biofilms (MABs) at day 120, i.e., ammonia and nitrite oxidizing bacteria (AOB and NOB) were dominant in the region adjacent to the membrane, while heterotrophic bacteria propagated at the top of the biofilm. Real-time qPCR results showed that the abundance of amoA gene was two orders of magnitude higher than the abundance of nxrA gene in the MABs. However, the nxrA gene was always detected during the operation time, which indicates the difficulty of complete washout of NOB in MABs. The growth of heterotrophic bacteria compromised the dominance of nitrifiers in biofilm communities, but it enhanced the denitrification performance of the RSMBR system. Applying a high ammonia loading together with oxygen limitation was found to be an effective way to start nitrite accumulation in MABs, but other approaches were needed to sustain or improve the extent of nitritation in nitrogen conversion in MABs.

Abstract:In this study, a novel composite membrane system (NCMS) was created to treat high organic wastewater with high ammonia nitrogen. At a relatively stable state (parameters such as the current in the reactor A (RA) 0.25A, the current in the reactor C (RC) 0.1A, etc.), a submerged membrane component C (SMCC) had the function of enrichment of NH4+-N (40.94%), and a submerged membrane component A (SMCA) had the function of enrichment of NO3--N (70.88%). The average removal efficiencies of total COD and TN in the NCMS were 93.12% and 49.23%, respectively.

Abstract:Development of nitrogen wastewater treatment is reviewed. The process of traditional nitrification and denitrifica-tion pathway, technologies involved in novel pathways such as shortcut nitrification-denitrification, anammox, denitrifica-tion, constructed wetlands, etc. , are summarized. It is pointed out that working on avoiding residual sludge and enhancing metab-olizability of microorganism will improve traditional methods. Study on factors like dissolved oxygen is recommended in shortcut nitrification-denitrification. And mechanism of anammox needs to be studied to improve conversion ability of aerobic ammonium oxidizers. It is also valuable to seek out methods of accumulation of denitrifier by controlling environmental conditions . Strengthening the research of plants can endure high salinity and alkalinity and meliorating these plants by using biological technologies will make it easier to develop land resource which has poor fertility,such as salina and swamp.

Abstract:This study presents a novel approach to sustainable aquaculture by integrating biofloc technology (BFT) with a compact down-flow hanging sponge (DHS) reactor. The integrated BFT-DHS system effectively removed nitrogen compounds while maintaining ammonia-nitrogen (NH4+-N) concentrations below 1 mg-N L-1 without water exchange. Application of this system in a tank bred with juvenile Oreochromis niloticus showed a high NH4+-N removal rate of up to 97 % and nitrite (NO2- -N) concentrations were maintained at 0.1 ± 0.1 mg-N L-1. Microbial analysis revealed Gordonia as the predominant genus in the biofloc contributing to heterotrophic nitrification, while the Peptostreptococcaceae family dominated the DHS reactor. Heterotrophic nitrification seemed to be the primary process for enhanced nitrogen removal. Pathogenic bacteria, Vibrio sp. was absent throughout the study. This study highlights the potential integration of BFT and DHS system for sustainable aquaculture practice with effective nitrogen removal.

Abstract:The microalgal-bacterial symbiosis (MBS) system was promising for antibiotics removal. However, in surface water, information about MBS system for nitrogen and antibiotics removal and its interaction with antibiotics is still very limited. This study constructed a new MBS system combining Chlorella pyrenoidosa with heterotrophic nitrifying and aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) bacteria and investigated its interaction with typical antibiotics in river water, tetracycline (TC) and norfloxacin (NOR). Results showed that Optimal nitrogen removal (97.8 %- 100 %) and satisfied antibiotics removal (89.3 %-95.6 %) were achieved under the microalgae-bacteria (A/B) ratio of 1/1 and inoculum dosage of 5 %. The main removal pathways of TC in river water were biodegradation and photolysis, while biodegradation and bioadsorption for NOR. Compared to the sole Chlorella pyrenoidosa or HN-AD bacteria, MBS system could provide more stable antibiotics removal and had a lower risk of cell structural damage under the pressure of TC or NOR. The TC and NOR with the background concentration level in natural water could promote the biomass growth and NH4+-N removal of MBS system. MBS system could constrain overgrowth of Chlorella pyrenoidosa. Achromobacter was the most dominant bacteria in the MBS system regardless of presence of TC and NOR.

Abstract:The steady mixed biofilm electrode (MBE) was investigated for the removal of nitrogen from mustard tuber wastewater. Results showed that complete nitrogen removal occurred over a wide initial chemical oxygen demand (COD)/total nitrogen (TN) ratio ranging from 2.8 to 9.8 using MBE. MBE revealed broad-spectrum applicability for the treatment of high-salinity wastewater containing different forms of nitrogen. Bio-electrochemical process, in-situ heterotrophic nitrogen reduction, ammonia stripping, nitrogen assimilation, and endogenous denitrification coexisted for the removal of nitrogen. Batch activity tests and functional microorganism analysis confirmed that autotrophic/heterotrophic nitrification, anoxic/aerobic denitrification, and nitrogen bio-electrochemical reduction cooperated to achieve efficient nitrogen conversion. More importantly, the analysis of the preliminary energy balance demonstrated that MBE was self-sustaining. The long-term operation stability of MBE was of great importance for its practical application. The results provided herein offer new insights into bioelectrochemical nitrogen removal and resource treatment of high-salinity wastewater.

Abstract:The residues of nitrogen contaminants due to insufficient organic carbon sources in sewage has always been the main problem faced by wastewater treatment plants in the process of nitrogen removal. In this study, simultaneous shortcut nitrification and denitrification (SND) was achieved in the hybrid membrane aerated biofilm reactor (H-MBfR) for treating low COD/N ratio (∼x223C 4: 1) wastewater. The effects of the aeration pressure and the influent COD/N ratio in H-MBfR were investigated and further optimized by the response surface methodology (RSM). By controlling the dissolved oxygen to achieve SND, the removal efficiencies of NH4+-N, COD and TN of low COD/N ratio wastewater reached maximum values of 95.52%, 96.61% and 72.23%, respectively. Microbial community analysis showed that the influent COD/N ratio had an obvious influence on the microbial community structure. In particular, ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and denitrifying bacteria had a good commensalism when the COD/N ratio was 4.3. Compared to control reactor, the analysis of membrane bio-fouling showed that H-MBfR has a lower amount of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) on membrane and a low concentration of MLSS in bulk liquid, which is helpful for the longer-term operation of H-MBfR.

Abstract:Microalgal-bacterial system (MBS) is potential biotechnology in wastewater treatment because it can remedy defects of conventional processes (e.g., insufficient carbon source and imbalanced elements ratio). However, the mechanisms of nitrogen (N) transport and removal in MBS are still unclear. In this study, it was discovered that MBS was conducive to adsorb NH4+-N and NO3--N through electrical neutralization, while extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) could provide binding sites (e.g., -OH and -CH3) for enhancing N transport and removal. The microalgae-bacteria interaction could accelerate N transport and removal from aqueous solution to cell. More importantly, the microalgal starch biosynthetic metabolism exhibited demonstrating the energy production potential could be boosted via MBS. Overall, the NO3--N and NH4+-N removal efficiencies, and energy yield were 82.28%, 94.15%, and 86.81 kJ/L, respectively, which are better than other relevant studies. Altogether, it is meaningful for revealing the applicability of MBS for treating wastewater and producing energy.

Abstract:In this study, we examined the degradation of tribenuron-methyl (TBM), a sulfonylurea herbicide that is widely distributed in aquatic ecosystems and poses ecological risks. We used an Artificial Neural Network-Genetic Algorithm (ANN-GA) modeling approach to optimize the parameters for degradation, achieving an 83 % degradation of TBM within a 30-minute timeframe. The optimal conditions determined through the ANN-GA model were as follows: [TBM] = 9.35 mg/L, [NaClO] = 682 μM, [FeSO 4 ] = 6.89 mg/L, and pH 4.5. Investigating various concentrations of hydroxylamine hydrochloride (HA) with optimal conditions of NaClO/FeSO 4 system, it was found that the degradation yield reached 93 % within 30 min at a concentration of 2 mM of HA. Furthermore, GC–MS analysis revealed the breakdown of TBM's sulfonylurea bridge, resulting in the generation of N -methyl-4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-amine (N-MTA) and Methyl 2-(aminosulfonyl) benzoate (MASB). N-MTA was found to be eliminated during the degradation process, while MASB transformed into N -methyl-o-benzoic sulfimide (N-MBS), named N -methylsaccharin. The proposed degradation pathway for TBM was outlined, and the toxicity of the by-products was assessed using microalgae Nannochloropsis gaditana . The findings indicated that N-MBS was less toxic than TBM, confirming the safety and effectiveness of the NaClO/Fe(II)/HA system for water treatment.

Abstract:Ammonia pollution in the water environment poses significant risks and hazards to the environment and human health. This study explored efficient removal of ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N) from water using millet shell biochar (MS-400) through static and dynamic column experiments. In static experiments, three factors were investigated using Box-Behnken design (BBD) method and it was found that MS-400 removed 95.07 % of NH 4 + -N under optimal adsorption conditions. Equilibrium data fitted well with the Freundlich isotherm ( R 2 = 0.990), while the pseudo-second-order model ( R 2 = 0.955) better described NH 4 + -N adsorption behavior, indicating chemisorption involving electron sharing and transfer between MS-400 and NH 4 + -N ions. In the dynamic column experiment, BBD was also applied, achieving a maximum NH 4 + -N adsorption rate of 78.02 % under optimal conditions. Moreover both the Thomas model and Yoon-Nelson model demonstrated excellent fitting performance, offering practical insights for industrial scale-up and production applications. Furthermore significant reductions in intensities for C—C/C—H, C=O, and —OH peaks were observed upon NH 4 + -N adsorption and direct hydrogen bonding between NH 4 + -N and oxygen-functional groups enhanced negatively charged sites for NH 4 + -N adsorption, suggesting electrostatic attraction, ion exchange and hydrogen bonding in the adsorption process. This study introduced MS-400 as a promising biosorbent for NH 4 + -N removal, providing a comprehensive analysis of NH 4 + -N adsorption behavior through static and dynamic column experiments. The findings offer practical guidance for operational applications.

Abstract:In this study, two lab-scale moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBR), seeded with intertidal wetland sediment (IWS) and activated sludge (AS), were constructed to compare their performances in treating high-salinity (3%) wastewater. Under a wide range of influent TOC (178-620 mg/L) and NH4+-N (25-100 mg/L), both the MBBRs (Riws and Ras) exhibited excellent TOC removal efficiencies of > 95%. Regarding nitrogen reduction, Riws exhibited a significantly superior TN removal efficiency of 90.2 +/- 1.8% than that of Ras (76.8 +/- 2.9%). A correlation analysis was innovatively conducted comparing the results between metagenomic sequencing and DNA pyrosequencing, and positive linear relationships were found with R-2 values of 0.763-0.945. Meanwhile, for illustration of different TN removal performance, nitrogen metabolic pathways were also assessed. Moreover, a list of functional oxidases (EC: 1.13.11.1, EC: 1.13.11.2, EC: 1.13.11.24, EC: 1.13.12.16, EC: 1.4.3.4, EC: 1.16.3.3, EC: 1.14.14.28) was found in IWS, revealing its potential in degradation of recalcitrant organics.

Abstract:Traditional biotechnology including activated sludge and biofilm process have the problems of poor tolerance and low removal efficiency in treating high ammonia and salt wastewater. In this study, a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) started up with heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) bacteria inoculation was proposed, with an initial nitrogen concentration of 600 mg·L−1. The nitrogen removal and microbial characteristics of the reactor were analyzed in comparison to the MBBR startup with activated sludge inoculation (S-MBBR) under different salinities. The results showed that the nitrogen removal efficiency of H-MBBR was 40 % higher than that of S-MBBR under low salinity (<1 %), and it obtained the maximum ammonia removal rate of 10.6 mg·L−1·h−1 at the salinity of 2 %. At 5 % salinity, the H-MBBR system still showed a 22.5 % and 14.5 % increase in ammonia and total nitrogen removal. High-throughout sequencing results showed that the halophilic bacteria Pseudomonas, Halomonas and Nitrincola played a key role at 5 % salinity, with the first two synthesizing tetrahydropyrimidine in H-MBBR to resist osmotic stress. Co-occurrence network analysis showed that a close-knit community structure leaded to an increased nitrogen removal effect in H-MBBR. This study proposes a novel approach for treating high ammonia nitrogen and high salt wastewater.

Abstract:This study proposes a biological nitrogen removal system for freshwater aquaria consisting of a down-flow hanging sponge (DHS) and an up-flow sludge blanket (USB). DHS-USB systems can perform nitrification and denitrification simultaneously, reducing ammonia (NH3) and nitrate (NO3-) toxicity in the water. The performance of the system was evaluated using on-site fresh water aquaria at ambient temperature (23-34°C) over 192 days. NH3 and nitrite (NO2-) were maintained at a detection limit of 0.01 mg N L-1 and NO3- was maintained below 10 mg N L-1, despite limited water exchange. The 16S rRNA gene of microorganisms from the sludge retained in the bioreactors was sequenced to identify the microbial communities present. Microbial community analysis revealed that ammonia oxidizing archaea (AOA), Ca. Nitrososphaera and Nitrosopumilus, played an important role in nitrification in the DHS reactor, while denitrifying bacteria Thauera played an important role in denitrification in the USB reactor. The proposed DHS-USB system is a promising technological advancement in the development of lower maintenance aquaria.
