Abstract:In this paper, we propose a combined technique for solving the fractional modification of the nonlinear oscillator with coordinate-dependent mass. It is an efficient method based on the fractional complex transform and the global residue harmonic balance method (called as FCT-GRHBM). The approximations and frequencies of this fractional nonlinear oscillator are given without linearization. Numerical comparisons with Runge–Kutta method are provided to confirm the efficiency of FCT-GRHBM. The sensitive analysis of the log errors and the frequencies with respect to different parameters is also investigated in detail.

Abstract:In this paper, the Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM) is employed to obtain approximate series solution of nonlinear oscillator with real order restoring force. The approximate frequency of the system obtained using HAM is compared with the exact one, and the approximate response of the system using HAM is compared with that obtained from the 4th-order Runge-Kutta Method. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed procedure are examined by several examples.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an analytical approach (VIM-Padé) based on the variational iteration method (VIM), Laplace transformation and the Padé approximation. We apply this technique to solve the strongly nonlinear oscillators with cubic and harmonic restoring force. The approximated solutions to the initial value problems are provided and compared with the original variational iteration method solutions and the numerical solutions obtained by Runge-Kutta method. Numerical experiments show that the VIM-Padé technique is efficient for solving the strongly nonlinear oscillators.

Abstract:In this paper, we apply the global residue harmonic balance method (GRHBM) for solving the nonlinear differential equation of the circular sector oscillator. The approximated solutions to the initial value problems are provided without linearization. Some remarks about the first order frequency in [Shaban M, et al. Current Applied Physics, 2010] are given. Numerical comparisons with Runge–Kutta method, the modified homotopy perturbation method and Akbari-Ganji’s method are presented to confirm the efficiency of GRHBM.

Abstract:A symplectic numerical approach to the stability analysis of nonlinear parametric excited systems with multi-degree-of-freedom is developed and the stability of a nonlinear vibration system depends on the dynamic behavior of its perturbation. The nonlinear parameter-varying differential equations for the perturbation motion are expressed in the form of Hamiltonian equations with time-varying Hamiltonian, and are converted further into the classical Hamiltonian equations with extended time-invariant Hamiltonian by augmenting the state variables. The solution to the augmented Hamiltonian equations has the symplectic structure in terms of the symplectic transformation. Then the difference equations of the symplectic Runge-Kutta algorithm with a sufficient condition are constructed, which is proved to preserve the intrinsic symplectic structure of the original solution. In particular, the symplectic Gauss-Runge-Kutta algorithm with stage 2 and order 4 is proposed and applied to the stability analysis of a nonlinear system. Unstable regions based on the nonlinear periodic-parameter perturbation equation are obtained by using the symplectic Gauss-Runge-Kutta algorithm, analytical solution method and non-symplectic conventional Runge-Kutta algorithm to verify the higher accuracy of the proposed algorithm. Unstable regions based on the nonlinear perturbation are given to illustrate the improvement over those based on the linear perturbation. The developed symplectic approach to the stability analysis can preserve the symplectic structure of the original system and is applicable to nonlinear parametric excited systems with multi-degree-of-freedom.

Abstract:The homotopy analysis method (HAM) is a new technique, which is independent of any small or large parameters. More importantly, unlike traditional techniques, the HAM provide an easy way to control and adjust the convergence region and rate of obtained series solutions. In this paper, based on the HAM together with the homotopy-pade technique, we developed a Maple package ADHO, which can entirely automatically output accurate analytic approximating solutions of nonlinear oscillatory systems. Meanwhile,ADHO can also give out approximations of several quantities with great physical significance in input system, such as frequency and mean ofmotion,etc. With a view to meeting direrent needs for different readers, the output of the package is invarious ways. The effectiveness of ADHO is demonstrated by applications to a variety of nonlinear oscillation equations. For the most majority of examples considered the running time is no more than 500 seconds.

Abstract:Deriving analytical relationship between the system parameters and amplitude of the limit cycle is a meaningful and challenging task. Currently, numerous existing analytical approximate methods struggle to achieve this goal when expressions of restoring force or nonlinear damping is complicated. To overcome this shortcoming, this study proposes a modified generalized harmonic function perturbation method. Using the proposed method, a generalized mixed Rayleigh–Liénard oscillator with cubic and quintic nonlinearities was investigated. The analytical relationships between the system parameters and amplitude of the limit cycle, as well as the expression of its characteristic quantity, were derived. By employing these analytical relationships, the existence, stability, number, position, and amplitude of each limit cycle are quantitatively analysed. The homoclinic and heteroclinic bifurcations were also predicted using the above analytical relationships. Additionally, analytical approximate solutions for this oscillator were calculated using the proposed method. All results obtained in this study were subsequently confirmed numerically to demonstrate their feasibility and validity. Consequently, the proposed method can be considered an effective supplement to perturbation-based methods. This also implies that the work presented in this paper has a certain theoretical significance and application value in the research area of quantitative analysis methods for strongly nonlinear oscillators.

Abstract:A novel approach about iterative homotopy harmonic balancing is presented to determine the periodic solution for a strongly nonlinear oscillator. This approach does not depend upon the small/large parameter assumption and incorporates the salient features of both methods of the parameter-expansion and the harmonic balance. Importantly, in obtaining the higher-order analytical approximation, all the residual errors are considered in the process of every order approximation to improve the accuracy. With this procedure, the higher-order approximate frequency and corresponding periodic solution can be obtained easily. Comparison of the obtained results with those of the exact solutions shows the high accuracy, simplicity, and efficiency of the approach. The approach can be extended to other nonlinear oscillators in engineering and physics.
The Homotopy Analysis for the Nonlinear Dynamics of Planetary Gear Trains

Abstract:In this paper, the homotopy analysis method (HAM) is proposed to study the nonlinear oscillators of planetary gear trains, in which the periodically time-varying mesh stiffness and gear backlash are included through a nonlinear displacement function. In contrast to the traditional perturbation methods, the HAM does not require a small parameter in the equation under study, and then can be applied to both of the weakly and strongly nonlinear problems. In this article, firstly the closed-form approximations for the dynamic response of planetary gear trains are obtained by HAM. The analytical solutions give insight into the nonlinear dynamics and the impact of system parameters on dynamic response. The accuracy of HAM solutions is evaluated by numerical integration simulations. Results indicate that with large tooth separation times, the amplitude-frequency curves obtained by HAM agree better with the results obtained by NI than those obtained by the MMS.

Abstract:In this study, a novel adapted homotopy perturbation method (HPM) is used to treat the nonlinear phenomena of free vibration in a system with one degree of freedom. This adaptation involves the integration of HPM with a least-squares optimizer, resulting in a hybrid method called the least square homotopy perturbation method (LSHPM). The LSHPM is tested on various nonlinear problems documented in the existing literature. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, the identified problems are also tackled using HPM and the MATLAB built-in function bvp5c, and then the results are compared with those obtained using LSHPM. In addition, a comparative analysis is carried out with the results of the AG method as found in the literature. The results show that LSHPM is a reliable and efficient method suitable for solving more complicated initial value problems in the fields of science and engineering.

Abstract:In this paper, a kind of novel analytical approximate solution was constructed to the Duffing oscillator via a modified homotopy analysis method (HAM), namely the piecewise perturbation method (PPM). The validity and efficient of the obtained PPM solutions were investigated by comparing with the traditional HAM solution. The main advantage of the PPM is that it possesses higher accuracy and faster convergence rate than the traditional HAM.

Abstract:A novel construction of homoclinic/heteroclinic orbits (HOs) in nonlinear oscillators is presented in this paper. An accurate analytical solution of a HO for small perturbation can be obtained in terms of trigonometric functions. An advantage of the present construction is that it gives an accurate approximate solution of a HO for large parametric value in relatively few harmonic terms while other analytical methods such as the Lindstedt–Poincaré method and the multiple scales method fail to do so.

Abstract:In this paper, homotopy perturbation method is directly extended to investigate nonlinear coupled equations with parameters derivative and to derive their numerical solutions. These nonlinear coupled equations with parameters derivative contain many important mathematical physics equations and reaction–diffusion equations. By choosing different values of the parameters in general formal numerical solutions, as a result, a very rapidly convergent series solution is obtained. The efficiency and accuracy of the method are verified by using two famous examples: coupled Burgers and mKdV equations. Numerical solutions show that good results have been achieved.

Abstract:Based on the homotopy analysis method (HAM), an analytic approach is proposed for highly nonlinear periodic oscillating equations with absolute value terms. The nonsmoothness of absolute value terms is handled by means of Fourier expansion, and the convergence is accelerated by using the iteration method. Two typical examples which can not be solved by the method of averaging of perturbation technique are employed to illustrate the validity and flexibility of this approach. Rather, accurate approximations are obtained using the HAM-based approach. The proposed approach has general meanings and thus can be used to solve many highly nonlinear periodic oscillating systems with this type of nonsmoothness of absolute value term.

Abstract:This paper deals with nonlinear oscillations of a conservative,nonnatural, single-degree-of-freedom system with odd nonlinearity. Bycombining the linearization of the governing equation with the method ofharmonic balance, we establish approximate analytical solutions for thenonlinear oscillations of the system. Unlike the classical harmonicbalance method, the linearization is performed prior to proceeding withharmonic balancing thus resulting in linear algebraic equations insteadof nonlinear algebraic equations. Hence, we are able to establish theapproximate analytical formulas for the exact period and periodicsolution. These approximate solutions are valid for small as well aslarge amplitudes of oscillation. Two examples are presented toillustrate that the proposed formulas can give excellent approximateresults.

Abstract:Pseudo closed form complete solution for nonlinear dynamical systems subjected to inhomogeneous generalized forcing using state transition matrices was developed, based on the Fourier expansion of periodic matrices and substitution of matrix exponential terms via Lagrange-Sylvester theorem. With a prescribed frequency spectrum, a jump modulation procedure was employed to avoid the aliasing effect when constructing approximation for equivalent stair-step stiffness function, yielding the appropriate constant value over each subinterval. A Hill-Messiner type of two degree-of-freedom system was presented afterwards to demonstrate methods for the forced response and the procedure for the modulation of time periodic parameter. The obtained results are presented and discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose A group of classical oscillators of high nonlinearity, which cannot be completely analyzed, is addressed by introducing a novel technique. The main objective of the current investigation is to utilize the generalized He’s frequency formula (HFF) in studying the analytical explanations of specific types of extremely nonlinear oscillators. This interest arises from the growing fascination in the realm of nonlinear oscillators. Regarding several engineering and scientific fields, together with three particular situations, a generic example is presented. Methods Compared to prior perturbation approaches utilized in this field, the new strategy is straightforward and requires less processing and timing. This ground-breaking tactic, which converts the nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE) into a linear one, is referred to as the non-perturbative approach (NPA), as an innovative approach. A new frequency that is comparable to a linear ODE, like in a simple harmonic situation, is produced in the procedure. When evaluating the physiologically significant specialized instances, the outcome from this straightforward approach not only exhibits a strong agreement with the numerical findings but also demonstrates that it is more accurate than the outcomes from other well-known approximate methodologies. An extensive description of the NPA is presented to ensure the maximum benefits. Results The theoretical findings are confirmed by conducting a numerical analysis with the aid of Mathematica Software (MS). The numerical solution (NS) and the theoretical responses demonstrated remarkable congruity. Conventional perturbation techniques typically use Taylor expansion to enlarge restoring forces, thereby reducing problem complexity. However, this weakness disappears with the NPA. Additionally, stability analysis of the problem alongside the NPA becomes feasible, unlike with prior conventional methodologies. Conclusion The NPA emerges as a more responsible resource when examining the NS for oscillators with significant nonlinearity. Its exceptional versatility in addressing various nonlinear problems underscores the NPA as a valuable benefit in the fields of engineering and applied science.
