Abstract:Positive emotions are one of the main research contents of positive psychology. Cultivating children's positive emotions has a positive effect on children's physical health and psychological development. Anji Play is the abbreviation of the game education model for kindergartens in Anji County, Zhejiang Province. This paper focused on the cultivation of positive emotions in Anji Play and found that giving children the initiative to play, returning play to nature, and providing opportunities for children to reflect on shared experiences after play can cultivate positive emotional experiences. It is hoped that through the research of this paper, kindergarten teachers can learn the spirit of Anji Play and promote the development of preschool education from the perspective of emotional cultivation.

Abstract:Objectives This study examines the process by which the recognition of children's right to play, which explains the practical competency of play-centered education of Chinese Anji kindergarten teachers in a meaningful way, is formed and how it is implemented in the field of play-center education. Methods To this end, for about three weeks from March 14, 2022, to April 2, 2022, a study was conducted in Anji County, Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China, focusing on participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and literature data analysis. A case study was conducted at K Kindergarten. Results The meaning of play-center education practice for teachers at Anji K Kindergarten was defined as an ‘a teacher who constantly strives to support real play’, ‘belief in children, the core of play-center education’, ‘a compass for expanding children's exploration activities and play’, ‘going together for a long time’ was divided into 4 categories, and each of them was further divided into subcategories and presented as nomads. Specifically, first, teachers did not recognize children's right to play from the beginning and had a high competency in practicing play-centered education at K kindergarten. Second, K kindergarten teachers believe that the main character of the classroom is an infant, which is much better than the teacher thinks. They keep themselves safe in the midst of adventure and challenge and believe that all children have their own inherent speed in them. Third, teachers of K kindergarten are developing the children’ power to observe, record and through large group sharing. Fourth, one nursery school (保育员) who is in charge of cleaning and preparing meals for each class of K Kindergarten. As a kindergarten leader, constantly requested financial support necessary for education from the government and overcame difficulties to reach the current play-centered education system. Conclusions First, it was confirmed that the high level of play-center education practice competency of Chinese Anji kindergarten teachers was not achieved in a short period of time, but through many years of effort. Second, it was confirmed that Anji kindergarten teachers in China fully believed in children. Third, it was confirmed that Anji kindergarten teachers had enough opportunities to expand children's play and reflect on their experiences daily.

Utilisation and Design of Kindergarten Outdoor Space and the Outdoor Activities: A Case Study of Kindergartens in Bergen, Norway and Anji in China

Abstract:Abstract Compared with Norwegian kindergartens that emphasize how outdoor activity benefits young children’s integrated development, Chinese kindergartens reluctantly encourage children to go outside for long time. A county named Anji in South China’s Zhejiang province has started to change this approach to outdoor play. Kindergartens there provide outdoor equipment to support children’s outdoor activities for longer periods of time. This approach is called Anji Play and has been recommended by Chinese Ministry of Education for all of the country. It has also attracted ECE experts overseas. In this chapter, we describe and analyse children’s outdoor play in an Anji setting and in a Norwegian kindergarten from the perspective of the utilisation and design of kindergarten outdoor space. The study takes an ethnographic approach. We collected photo observations, anecdotal recording and interviews from one kindergarten in Bergen, Norway and one in Anji, China. The observation results focusing on outdoor play in the two kindergartens were discussed with kindergarten teachers, principals, professors and college students from China and Norway. Our aim was to interpret the core concepts, goals and concerns of Norwegian and Anji play from multiple perspectives to understand children’s cultural formation in the two cultural contexts. We found the cultural values and traditions influence how outdoor play is performed and there are clear links between culture and children’s cultural formation.
Studying teacher professional development: how a Chinese kindergarten teacher brings play practices into the program

Abstract:Research has suggested that system-wide professional development needs to embrace ongoing and sustainable processes such as critical reflection, being within a community of practice and the co-creation of new practices within and across early childhood systems. However, there is little research on how professional development can be designed in a personally meaningful way to support sustained learning. The research reported here is part of a wider study on the professional development of early childhood teachers. Video observations of one teacher’s interactions with children and interviews with that teacher are analysed to investigate how Chinese early childhood teachers’ professional development may be meaningfully designed through an Educational Experiment (EE). A Conceptual PlayWorld model as the intervention for the educational experiment was used to create new conditions. The theoretical problem for teachers and researchers was how to bring new play practices into kindergarten programs. We argue that the educational experiment creates a new kind of social situation for teachers, amplifies reflective practice and in so doing, acts as an important source of professional development for sustained practice change.

Abstract:ABSTRACTObjects, whether toys or not, are likely to become the center of children's game, which can trigger children's exploration and imagination, and build the world's environmental and psychological statements by manipulating something, to enhance the autonomy of children and inspire their creativity. This paper, based on scaffolding learning theory, puts forward the learning principle of constructive play suitable for learning in play school, suitable for cognitive behaviors of children aged 5 to 8 years old, and aims to encourage children to think creatively in the course of play, rather than learning knowledge and solve problems. We redesign the images, most commonly used by children RPG storytelling, and embed interactive intelligence, to better help children play games, stimulate their imagination and creativity in storytelling, and encourage them share with their companions and parents.

Abstract:What if the environment could be transformed in culturally-responsive and inclusive ways to foster high-quality interactions and spark conversations that drive learning? In this article, we describe a new initiative accomplishing this, called Playful Learning Landscapes (PLL). PLL is an evidence-based initiative that blends findings from the science of learning with community-based participatory research to transform physical public spaces and educational settings into playful learning hubs. Here, we describe our model for conducting this research, which is mindful of three key components: community input, how children learn best, and what children need to learn to be successful in the 21st century economy. We describe how this model was implemented in two PLL case studies: one in a predominantly Latine community and the second in early childhood education classrooms. Furthermore, we describe how research employing our model can be rigorously and reliably evaluated using observational and methodological tools that respond to diverse cultural settings and learning outcomes. For example, our work evaluates how PLL impacts adult-child interaction quality and language use, attitudes about play and learning, and community civic engagement. Taken together, this article highlights new ways to involve community voices in developmental and educational research and provides a model of how science can be translated into practice and evaluated in culturally responsive ways. This synthesis of our process and evaluation can be used by researchers, policymakers, and educators to reimagine early educational experiences with an eye toward the built environment that children inhabit in everyday life, creating opportunities that foster lifelong learning.

Abstract:Early childhood education and care is a current interest in many countries. Many international studies have highlighted the importance of high-quality early education environments where learning and play are integrated. Studies show that these types of learning environments have a positive impact on children’s future prospects and overall development. Critical curriculum steering documents from Finland and Brazil form the basis of this study and can similarly be shown to define the quality of these environments, as well as providing definitions of playful learning in these differing cultural contexts. A content analysis explores patterns of the cultural and pedagogical difference of definition. This descriptive comparison permitted similarities and differences between the countries with regard to play to emerge. In this article, the authors explore what these different cultural and pedagogical definitions of play and playful learning are and what they might mean. The article thus makes a methodological contribution to a broader discussion of comparative studies of national curricula in early childhood education with specific regard to children’s engagement, learning and development in and through play. The theoretical conclusions are, however, more tentative, but the authors suggest some innovative ways to conceptualise cultural and pedagogical differences in play by making an analogy with Wittgenstein’s analysis of games in his Philosophical Investigations.

Abstract:Abstract Creativity and Sustainability Education (Education for Sustainability Development) are two global agendas in 21st century learning. This underlies the birth of various pedagogical ideas that are relevant for teaching creativity and eco-literacy. Humans are creatures who love to play (homo ludens) and will always desire to be affiliated with nature (biophilia). Therefore, this article aims to describe how creative play and learning in the natural environment are used to develop creative-eco-literacy in elementary school students. This article presents an overview of Participatory Action Research (PAR) studies in social studies teaching. Kemmis, McTaggart, and Nixon (2014) defined PAR as a study, which creates learning innovation through planning, action, observation, and reflection. The teacher makes learning plans by preparing various creative games performed in the natural environment such as playing on grass, identifying colors, shapes, textures of plants and animal, natural sounds, describing, asking, telling about animals, running, digging, and solving environmental problems such as through gardening activities. The teacher does not forget to make the relevance of these activities with the curriculum that applies in the school thematically. Learning activities are then observed and reflected by the teacher to see their effectiveness and impact on students creative-eco-literacy development. The results showed that creative play activities and learning in the natural environment can be used to develop adaptive, aesthetic, cognitive, communication as a language function, sensorimotor, and socio emotional attitudes in students.
Enhancing Cooperation in 5-6-Year-Old Rural Chinese Children through Cooperative Constructive Play Based on Anji Play: A Quasi-Experimental Study

Abstract:Cooperation plays a crucial role in children's social development and adaptation. This study designed a cooperative constructive play (CCP) intervention based on the Anji Play teaching model and evaluated its effectiveness in a quasi-experimental design involving 60 rural Chinese children aged 5-6 years. Participants were divided into an experimental group, which engaged in 12 weeks of CCP, and a control group, which continued with regular teaching activities. The cooperation data were collected through a truck racing task using pre-, mid-, post-, and follow-up tests, while the cooperation levels and strategies were evaluated by video observations of role-playing games before and after the tests. The results indicated significant improvements in cooperation scores in both the truck racing task and role-playing games in the experimental group compared to the baseline, with no similar enhancements observed in the control group. Furthermore, cooperation scores in the follow-up were higher than pre- and post-test scores, demonstrating the CCP's effectiveness in fostering child cooperation, transferability to other contexts, and sustainability. These findings suggest that CCP intervention based on Anji Play can significantly enhance cooperation in children, offering a valuable tool for educational practices.

Abstract:This article contributes as a commentary to Min's critical evaluation of the challenges and resistances that have presented themselves during the recent process of changing the pedagogical practices ofChinese preschools to more closely resemble those seen in Scandinavian. The focus is on how decisions of how to structure the particular environment in preschool settings have direct and indirect implications for children's learning and learning possibilities, and the importance of understanding these as mediated signifiers of the particular culture values. The discussions stress the importance of weighing cross-cultural pedagogical practices in terms of the functions they each serve in themselves, and in regard to the sociocultural history from which they have emerged and serve within. This means enculturation of new didactic practices should be understood as a gradual, smooth processes that allows itself to merge useful aspects of new educational models and practices with existing practices and cultural values.

Abstract:Objectives This article aims at reviewing the processes of experiences and learning in outdoor plays with a rhizomatic perspective, drawing them through a rhizomatic map, confirming authentic values of outdoor plays and their apsects, and making new suggestions for outdoor plays which have been recognized as superficial values on site. Methods For this, participatory observation and visual research methods were applied to 52 five-year-old young children of A Kindergarten in B city. And in order to figure out before and after the plays of the children, who cannot be figured out easily by participatory observation and visual research method, and their close relationships, semi-structured interviews were also conducted. The collected data through participatory observation, visual research method, and interviews were analyzed according to the inclusive analytic procedures based on the Pragmatic Eclecticism suggested by Young-cheon Kim(2016) and the validity was secured through the evidence of the ‘Credibility’ of Lincoln and Guba(1985). Results Young children’s outdoor plays starting from an accidental encounter with snails on the way to walk on a rainy day were created through endless connections and contacts. Their plays created by an accidental encounter with snails were categorized into an accidental encounter, recreation by chance, connections and connects, creating meaning, entering into the site of learning, dislocating and learning together, and thinking newly and without limit. Young children exist as nomads who reject territorialization, pursue new arrangements and desires which are different from the present time and try deterritorialization. Therefore, young children’s outdoor plays have neither start nor end and show non-linear and rhizomatic characteristics like roots digging into and stretching out underground endlessly. Conclusions Young children’s outdoor plays with the rhizomatic characteristics could not be understood with a tree-type perspective concluded with a center and they require teachers and adults to change their perspectives to the rhizomatic one which is not fixed but changing. And young children can meet the world, think and create learning as actors in plays when they have possibilities of changes and dislocation in play venue, time, play methods, etc.

Abstract:This work focuses on the role of design for novel edutainment robots for children. The theme is addressed by adopting a holistic approach, aimed at framing the complexity of a phenomenon that is changing the children educational and play habits. The main aspects of this phenomenon were further investigated through a preliminary study carried out in Beijing, China. The study consisted in a questionnaire and forms about children's habits submitted to parents, and in hands-on activities supported by probes for children. The results of the questionnaire provided information that help to get a better understanding of the relation between education and play in children's life that can be used as basis for developing new design scenarios. The activities with children, instead, allowed to collect inspirational data and to identify design principles that could be adopted as drivers in the development of novel robotic products for children.

Abstract:In 2001, the Chinese Ministry of Education issued Guidelines for Preschool Education (GPE) (trial version) to call on early childhood practitioners to use a child-centred and play-based approach to teaching and learning. In order to implement the requirements, many kindergartens in China have carried out the play-based kindergarten curriculum reform. Among them, there are three successful trial cases in China on putting play as the core and base activity in kindergarten. They are Anji play in Zhejiang province (south east China), Lijin play in Shandong Province (east China) and Gamification of the curriculum in Jiangsu Province (east China). All the kindergartens there whether private or public start to change the old group teaching and return play to young children. The similarities of three play modes are: open and constantly changing play environment, adequate play time, multiple teachers' roles and child-centred play evaluation. Play-based curriculum in these three cases are top-down reform, which is the most effective way in China.

Abstract:This study aims to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to early childhood development and education through a descriptive research approach. The educator recognized the significance of establishing environments that are conducive to children's needs and incorporating stimulating activities to foster the growth of young learners. The researchers conducted an assessment of knowledge, attitude, and practices through interviews and conversations. The variables of race, age, and education had a notable influence on the level of knowledge among individuals. Teachers in educational institutions possess a broader range of knowledge regarding school nutrition and health compared to students. The respondents' knowledge, behavior, and perspectives were shaped by a range of factors, such as their educational attainment, occupation, religious beliefs, and racial background. The study findings emphasize the importance of school health, nutrition, and recreation, and recommend that educators, students, parents, and other stakeholders actively promote these aspects. Creating a favorable and supportive learning environment is crucial in the field of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), risk reduction initiatives, Nepal's child-friendly education programs, and the improvement of school environment.

Abstract:Play is widely discussed within the context of children's education and development. However, play (specifically child-directed play) should also be understood in the context of children's participation. With an argument grounded in theory and research from multiple perspectives, this article encourages readers to consider play as not only a means to an end, but as an essential element of children's current engagement within cultural contexts and the creation of social capital and personal voice. Recognizing the limits of theoretical discussion alone, the authors have developed a practice-based community engagement and training model to support child-directed play across various contexts. Pop-Up Adventure Playgrounds support and celebrate child-directed play in public spaces and help to reframe discussions about children's right to play as part of an ongoing and collective issue of human rights, citizenship, and participation.

Abstract:Studies about child development emphasize the importance of play in children's early years. However, there is an existing controversy about the role educators should have in young children's free play. This research work studies the approach to early playful activity from Pikler-Lóczy education. A systematic observation was conducted to deepen in the educational activity of free play accompanying. We studied how an experienced educator combines the instrumental and relational dimensions of her educational activity while children are playing, and the intervention levels they accordingly shape: no intervention, indirect intervention, and direct intervention. Two complementary techniques were used in order to discover the relational behaviors that modulate each instrumental action: lag sequential analysis and polar coordinate analysis. Results show that the educator's focus of attention is adaptive to the instrumental action she is performing; that the relational dimension of her educational activity modulates the instrumental actions; and that specific kinetic behaviors announce the beginning, mediate the developing and mark the closing of each instrumental action. Therefore, we demonstrated that the educator masterly combines the instrumental and relational dimensions of her educational activity, thus, shaping three different intervention levels towards children's free play. This positioning is beneficial to children's development given its active attempt to promote their intrinsic motivation and will to autonomously discover and learn.

Intergenerational Play within Family: The Case for Occupational Consciousness

Abstract:This study of changes in children's play across three generations of one South African family challenges assumptions about the agency adults and children hold in orchestrating what becomes of play from one generation to the next, in the context of mainly exogenous and rapid social change. The portrayal of adults and children as dialectically opposed to each other in relation to play is also addressed. By tracking children's play across time, the study examines ways in which children and adults negotiate a shared notion of valued play. The family was approached as a case, with data drawn from multiple sources while situating the family within its geographical, socio-political, historical and economic contexts. An ethnographic lens was used to explore the third generation's everyday culture, with specific attention to its play engagements. While the findings point to both persistence and change, the critical role of technology, particularly television, in shifting power from the family to external forces, as the rhetoric of play becomes complex over time, is exposed. Recognition of this shift reveals the need for increased consciousness of the things people do every day.
Exploring the feasibility of outdoor indigenous games and songs to enhance play-based pedagogy in early childhood education

Abstract:Indigenous play activities are crucial to cross-cultural knowledge and practice and are gaining ground as a pedagogical approach in early childhood education settings. The study aimed at systematically documenting culturally and developmentally appropriate outdoor indigenous games that could serve as resource materials for play-based learning in ECE centres. Participants comprising teachers, parents, grandparents, and adolescent girls and boys were drawn from Lufwanyama district of Zambia. Data was generated through Participatory Action Research to allow inter-cultural dialogue. Data was analysed using thematic categorisation. Results showed that documentation of indigenous games can serve as a resource capital for enhancing play-based learning practice in an early childhood education setting. The study further revealed that integrating indigenous games can strengthen home-school linkages through active community engagement. The study recommends that teachers can effectively implement play-based learning when the reservoir of developmentally appropriate indigenous games is easily accessible to them. We further argue for rethinking early childhood education pedagogical practice so that learning and development are seen as being influenced more by contextually responsive play and exploration, than by direct instruction and teaching.

Abstract:Discussion of children's play in international and diverse communities requires careful consideration of social, cultural and political contexts impacting children's lives, as well as recognition of the complexities revealed when these variables are identified and analysed. Using diverse conceptual frameworks represented in the research literature on play – traditional developmental, sociocultural, human rights and poststructural – we analyse examples of children's conceptions about play and retrospective interviews about adults' play memories drawn from two research studies. As a result, we illuminate tensions that exist in global discussions of children's play. Using the goal of improving social justice and equity in children's lives as a foundational framework guiding our analysis and discussion of children's play, we suggest that concluding what is in the best interests of children involves learning to engage in difficult conversations where tensions, complexities and contingencies are objectively and openly explored.

Abstract:We present to you the project „While we play, we can learn everything“, with an ecological orientation for working with children of preschool age. An innovative program has been developed, which is based on the inclusion of games, including games in nature, as part of the educational process. The main principles underlying the organization of the pedagogical process and the selection of project activities are: The child – center and subject of pedagogical interaction; The child is different, unique and unrepeatable in this world, as well as you – his teachers and his parents; The child develops only in the interaction – child-adult; The attitude towards the child – with respect for his personality and support for his individuality. We present activities to build a supportive, welcoming and safe interactive environment where the role of play and family are central. It is important to share experiences within the kindergarten with the family community and with other kindergartens.
