Abstract:Telomeres are the physical ends of eukaryotic chromosomes. They are essential for chromosome integrity and genome stability. Functional telomeres potentate the continuous cell division and prevent the cells from undergoing cellular senescence. The replication of telomeric DNA is achieved by a specialized reverse transcriptase telomerase or homologous recombination in the absence of telomerase. Telomeres represent a heterochromatin domain that usually represses the expression of neighbor genes. In this presentation, I will present and discuss our recent studies on regulation of telomere replication/recombination, telomere heterochromatin formation and cellular replicative aging in budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
