Abstract:Chiral carbon quantum dots (cCQDs) , as a new type of carbon nano-functional material with tunable emission wavelength, superior photostability, low toxicity, biocompatibility and chirality, are playing an increasingly important role in the fields of chemistry, biology and medicine. This paper reviews the preparation methods (one-step and two-step), optical properties (UV, fluorescence, chirality) and applications in chiral catalysis, chiral recognition, targeted imaging as well as other fields, while lists some of the issues and challenges in the research of chiral carbon quantum dots. Finally, due to its good fluorescence and other properties, it is expected that chiral carbon quantum dots will have broad commercial prospects in future applications.

Abstract:A graphene quantum dots (GQDs)–chitosan (CS) composite film was prepared via successive electrodeposition of GQDs and CS on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The strong interactions between GQDs and CS resulted in the formation of a regular and uniform film, which can be applied in the electrochemical chiral recognition of tryptophan (Trp) enantiomers. CS in the composite film provides a chiral microenvironment, meanwhile, GQDs can amplify the electrochemical signals and improve the recognition efficiency. Due to the synergetic effect of GQDs and CS, chiral recognition of Trp enantiomers is achieved successfully. Compared with previous reports utilizing GQDs in photoluminescent research, this work opens a new avenue for broadening the applications of GQDs in the electrochemically chiral sensors.

Abstract:Introduction of chirality to colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) triggers a chiroptical effect. However, there remains a knowledge gap in the mechanism of chirality transfer and amplification from molecules to QDs. By time-dependent density functional theory calculations combined with a correlated electron-hole picture, we explored the chiroptical activity of CdSe QDs decorated with different chiral monocarboxylic acids from an excitonic perspective. Our calculations showed strong circular dichroism (CD) signals in the visible region for the chiral CdSe QDs. The excitonic states with large CD originate from QDs, while the chiral molecules break the orthogonality between electric and magnetic transition dipoles, which synergistically facilitates the prominent dissymmetric effect. The considered monocarboxylic acid chiral molecules all favor the bidentate adsorption configuration of the carboxyl group on the CdSe surface, endowing an identical CD signature but distinct excitonic characteristics. These findings are crucial for the regulation of chirality and excitons in semiconductor QDs to develop excitonic devices.

Abstract:Ligand-induced chirality in semiconducting nanocrystals has been the subject of extensive study in the past few years and shows potential applications in optics and biology. Yet, the origin of the chiroptical effect in semiconductor nanoparticles is still not fully understood. Here, we examine the effect of the interaction with amino acids on both the fluorescence and the optical activity of chiral semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). A significant fluorescence enhancement is observed for l/d-Cys-CdTe QDs upon interaction with all the tested amino acids, indicating suppression of nonradiative pathways as well as the passivation of surface trap sites brought via the interaction of the amino group with the CdTe QDs' surface. Heterochiral amino acids are shown to weaken the circular dichroism (CD) signal, which may be attributed to a different binding configuration of cysteine molecules on the QDs' surface. Furthermore, a red shift of both CD and fluorescence signals in l/d-Cys-CdTe QDs is only observed upon adding cysteine, while other tested amino acids do not exhibit such an effect. We speculate that the thiol group induces orbital hybridization of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMOs) of cysteine and the valence band of CdTe QDs, leading to the decrease of the energy band gap and a concomitant red shift of CD and fluorescence spectra. This is further verified by density functional theory calculations. Both the experimental and theoretical findings indicate that the addition of ligands that do not "directly" interact with the valence band (VB) of the QD (noncysteine moieties) changes the QD photophysical properties, as it probably modifies the way cysteine is bound to the surface. Hence, we conclude that it is not only the chemistry of the amino acid ligand that affects both CD and PL but also the exact geometry of binding that modifies these properties. Understanding the relationship between the QD's surface and chiral amino acid thus provides an additional perspective on the fundamental origin of induced chiroptical effects in semiconductor nanoparticles, potentially enabling us to optimize the design of chiral semiconductor QDs for chiroptic applications.

Abstract:Chiral quantum dots (QDs), an emerging new type of artificial chiral materials, have attracted rapidly growing interest due to their fascinating chiral activity properties and their wide range of applications. For biological applications, understanding the origin of chiral QDs provides guidelines for designing chiral nanomedicines with enantiospecific properties, while increasing the intensity of chirality offers higher signal strength in vivo. Encouraged by the evolving discoveries of these novel artificial chiral materials, we believe it is necessary to systematically summarize the development of chiral QDs in biological applications. In this review, we summarize the mechanisms underlying the origin of chiral QDs and present examples where the presence of chirality in QDs is conferred by intrinsic chirality, ligand-induced chirality and self-assembled chirality. We then outline the tools for increasing the g-factor of chiral quantum dots, which is important for in vivo applications. Furthermore, some specific examples of chiral quantum dots in biological applications such as cancer and neurodegenerative disease therapy are discussed. Finally, we discuss how we can use chiral quantum dots to address some of the key challenges in biological applications and also raise some important questions that remain to be answered in the future.

Abstract:Four novel chiral iridium(iii) complexes with triplex stereogenic centers were synthesized by introducing chiral carbon atoms into cyclometalated and ancillary ligands, and separated into eight isomers, which coincide with the old Chinese philosophy Eight Trigrams. The electron circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence spectra of four pairs of isomers show perfect mirror images with a dissymmetry factor (g(lum) factor) of around 0.003.

Abstract:Chiral carbon dots (CDs) are a novel luminescent zero-dimensional carbon-based nanomaterial with chirality. They not only have the advantages of good biocompatibility, multi-color-emission, easy functionalization, but also exhibits highly symmetrical chiral optical characteristics, which broadens their applicability to enantioselectivity of some chiral amino acids like cysteine and lysine, asymmetric catalysis as well as biomedicine in gene expression and antibiosis. In addition, the exploration of the excited state chirality of CDs has developed its excellent circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties, opening up a new application scenario like recognition of chiral light sources and anti-counterfeit printing with information encryption. This review mainly focuses on the mature synthesis approaches of chiral CDs, including chiral ligand method and supramolecular self-assembly method, then we consider emerging applications of chiral CDs in CPL, biosensing and biological effect. Finally, we concluded with a perspective on the potential challenges and future opportunities of such fascinating chiral CDs.

Abstract:Chiral recognition of amino acid plays a significant role in pharmaceutical, medical, and food science. This study describes a chiral sensing system of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)-coated sulfur quantum dots (CD-SQDs) for the selective fluorescence recognition of tryptophan (Trp) enantiomers. CD-SQDs were prepared by a facile assembly fission method and could selectively recognize L-Trp by the different binding ability between L/D-Trp and β-CD. The inclusion of L-Trp and the stereoselective catalysis of CD-SQDs enzyme mimics cause the increased fluorescence intensity of CD-SQDs, which has a linear response ranging from 10 to 500 nM and the detection limit as 2.3 nM. CD-SQDs also show great selectivity for L-Trp from the commercial compound amino acid injection. The study could provide an effective method for the chiral recognition of amino acid enantiomers based on the catalytic activity of nanoenzymes.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are fluorescent carbon nanomaterials that have been applied to biology, medicine, and optoelectronics, owing to their significant advantages such as simple synthesis methods, low cost, and widely available sources of raw synthesis materials. This review summarizes CQD preparation methods, which include hydrothermal and microwave-assisted synthesis methods, as well as separation methods such as centrifugation, dialysis, and filtration. Additionally, we review the application of CQDs in the detection of active ingredients, primarily phenolic compounds, in traditional Chinese medicine. We also discuss the quenching mechanism of CQD fluorescence using the active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine. Limitations such as insufficient test selectivity, weak fluorescence intensity, and an unclear quantitative relationship between preparation methods and properties should be resolved for the efficient use of CQDs to detect active ingredients in Chinese medicine.

Abstract:Abstract Chirality exists everywhere in nature, so chiral recognition is also an extremely important field. This paper explores the recognition of amino acid configuration by an electrochemical chiral sensing platform constructed with carbon nanomaterials (carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as the substrate material) combined with chiral selectors (chitosan (CS)). CQDs/CS, which is bonded by intermolecular force, and CQDs‐CS, which is formed by covalent grafting through amidation, are selected as electrochemical chiral recognition materials, and a series of characterization methods are carried out to indicate the successful preparation of the materials, and then attached to the glass carbon electrode (GCE), forming a chiral sensing platform for amino acid enantiomers. The differential voltammetry (DPV) method was used to convert the chemical signal into electrical signal. The results showed that compared with CQDs/CS, CQDs‐CS had better enantiomer resolution to tryptophan (Trp), and the peak current ratio (I L /I D ) was 2.28.

Abstract:Semiconductor chiral nanostructures have attracted wide interest as components of polarized optoelectronic devices. However, it is still a challenge to obtain semiconductor quantum dots with chiral optical response through simple methods. Herein, we demonstrated that black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) and tin sulfide quantum dots (SnS(2)QDs) were obtained by high-speed centrifugation of ultrasonic and two-dimensional nanoplatelets. The chiral interaction of BPQDs and SnS(2)QDs at the "crowded" edge resulted in helical buckling, and a large number of nanoparticles with helical lattice orientation were formed. Circular dichroism (CD) of BPQDs and SnS(2)QDs showed approximately 640 +/- 10 nm and 526 +/- 10 nm, respectively, indicating their different chiral symbols. The positive and negative energy CD bands corresponded to the left helix of BPQDs and the right helix of SnS(2)QDs, respectively. The physical and chemical phenomena were associated with the optical and electronical properties of the chiral black phosphorus (BP) and SnS2 materials, promoting their application in biology and other fields.

Abstract:Chirality is one of the most widespread properties in nature. After the successful application of non-optical active carbon dots (CDs) in the fields of detection, imaging, and antibacterial, the researchers turned more attention to the preparation and applications of chiral CDs. This paper reports the preparation of several chiral CDs with chiral amino acids as carbon sources through two different methods (one-step hydrothermal route and two-step coupling route), and further explores the difference in antibacterial abilities of these chiral CDs prepared by different carbon sources and synthesis methods. The experiments results showed that chiral D/LGU which are prepared through one-step method and with glutamic acid (Glu), are superior to those prepared by two-step method (NLDU/NDGU), or those prepared with cysteine as raw material (D/LCS). For D/LCS, the antibacterial ability of the L type is superior to that of the D type, proving that the synthesis method and the chirality of raw material are both important in the antibacterial behavior of prepared CDs. The chirality and optical properties of prepared CDs have been characterized by UV–vis spectrophotometer, fluorescence spectrology, and circular dichroism. Through MurA enzyme inhibition tests, SEM, and molecular docking design, the antibacterial mechanism of chiral CDs has been investigated. The research provides a sound foundation for the preparation, characterization, and application of chiral CDs, as well as the novel targeting antibacterial applications.

Abstract:Circular dichroism (CD) induced at exciton transitions by chiral ligands attached to single component and core/shell colloidal quantum dots (QDs) was used to study the interactions between QDs and their capping ligands. Analysis of the CD line shapes of CdSe and CdS QDs capped with l-cysteine reveals that all of the features in the complex spectra can be assigned to the different excitonic transitions. It is shown that each transition is accompanied by a derivative line shape in the CD response, indicating that the chiral ligand can split the exciton level into two new sublevels, with opposite angular momentum, even in the absence of an external magnetic field. The role of electrons and holes in this effect could be separated by experiments on various types of core/shell QDs, and it was concluded that the induced CD is likely related to interactions of the highest occupied molecular orbitals of the ligands with the holes. Hence, CD was useful for the analysis of hole level-ligand interactions in quantum semiconductor heterostructures, with promising outlook toward better general understanding the properties of the surface of such systems.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were prepared by pyrolysis of citric acid, and then incorporated into β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) via H-bonds between the oxygen-containing groups on GQDs and the hydroxyl groups on β-CD. The nanocomposites of GQDs and β-CD (GQDs/β-CD) were negatively charged due to the ionization of carboxyl groups of GQDs, and therefore they could be effectively electrodeposited onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The electrodeposited GQDs/β-CD were optically active due to the introduction of β-CDs with well-defined hydrophobic central cavities, and it was employed as an electrochemical chiral interface for enantiorecognition of tryptophan (Trp) isomers.

Abstract:Chiral CDots (c‐CDots) not only inherit those merits from CDots, but also exhibit the chiral effects in optical, electric, and bio‐properties. Therefore, significant progress is achieved for c‐CDots as a result of numerous research efforts carried out. The synthetic strategies of c‐CDots, including postfunctionalization of CDots with chiral ligands, and one‐pot synthesis. and assembly of CDots with chiral soft templates. Afterward, a clear chiral effect of c‐CDots on their applications is elaborated. Chiral CDots (c‐CDots) not only inherit those merits from CDots but also exhibit chiral effects in optical, electric, and bio‐properties. Therefore, c‐CDots have received significant interest from a wide range of research communities including chemistry, physics, biology, and device engineers. They have already made decent progress in terms of synthesis, together with the exploration of their optical properties and applications. In this review, the chiroptical properties and chirality origin in extinction circular dichroism (ECD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) of c‐CDots is briefly discussed. Then, the synthetic strategies of c‐CDots is summarized, including one‐pot synthesis, post‐functionalization of CDots with chiral ligands, and assembly of CDots into chiral architectures with soft chiral templates. Afterward, the chiral effects on the applications of c‐CDots are elaborated. Research domains such as drug delivery, bio‐ or chemical sensing, regulation of enzyme‐like catalysis, and others are covered. Finally, the perspective on the challenges associated with the synthetic strategies, understanding the origin of chirality, and potential applications is provided. This review not only discusses the latest developments of c‐CDots but also helps toward a better understanding of the structure‐property relationship along with their respective applications.

Abstract:The outstanding properties of carbon dots (CDs), including biocompatibility, low toxicity, photoluminescence, and easy synthesis and modification, make them strong competitors to traditional semiconductor quantum dots. Chirality exists widely in nature and plays important roles in life sciences and materials sciences. The application of chirality to CDs generates a new class of potentially valuable CDs materials, chiral CDs, that may be useful in areas such as enantiomeric recognition and separation, chiral catalysis, bioimaging, and biomedicine. In the strict sense, chiral CDs synthesized by a "bottom-up" method should be classified as carbonized polymer dots (CPDs), and we therefore propose that such chiral CDs be termed chiral CPDs (Ch-CPDs). Here, we provide the first comprehensive review of recent achievements in Ch-CPDs synthesis methodology, properties, and applications, and discuss the challenges to be overcome in their future development.
