Abstract:When atoms come together and bond, we call these new states molecules, and their properties determine many aspects of our daily life. Strangely enough, it is conceivable for light and molecules to bond, creating new hybrid light-matter states with far-reaching consequences for these strongly coupled materials. Even stranger, there is no `real' light needed to obtain the effects, it simply appears from the vacuum, creating `something from nothing'. Surprisingly, the setup required to create these materials has become moderately straightforward. In its simplest form, one only needs to put a strongly absorbing material at the appropriate place between two mirrors, and quantum magic can appear. Only recently has it been discovered that strong coupling can affect a host of significant effects at a material and molecular level, which were thought to be independent of the `light' environment: phase transitions, conductivity, chemical reactions, etc. This review addresses the fundamentals of this opportunity: the quantum mechanical foundations, the relevant plasmonic and photonic structures, and a description of the various applications, connecting materials chemistry with quantum information, nonlinear optics and chemical reactivity. Ultimately, revealing the interplay between light and matter in this new regime opens attractive avenues for many applications in the material, chemical, quantum mechanical and biological realms.

Characterizing Strong Light-Atom Interaction by a Self-Consistent Solution to Maxwell-Schrödinger Equations

Abstract:Summary form only given. Strong light-atom interaction is at the heart of atomic, molecular and optical physics; and is also important to quantum optics, quantum computing, nuclear magnetic resonance and laser. When an atom (or two-level system) is illuminated by a coherent beam of photons, it will cyclically absorb photons and re-emit them by stimulated emission, which is called Rabi oscillation. Here we developed a semiclassical framework to model the phenomenon via a self-consistent solution to Maxwell-Schrödinger equations. Different from Maxwell-Bloch equations, the wave function of the atom replacing for the density matrix nonlinearly interacts with the magnetic vector potential under coulomb gauge condition. A well-posed time evolution system derived from light-atom Hamiltonian is numerically solved by finite-difference time-domain method. The developed semiclassical Maxwell-Schrödinger framework could be generalized to model light-exciton interaction in semiconductor nanostructures.
Toward collective chemistry by strong light-matter coupling

Abstract:Strong light-matter coupling provides a versatile and novel means to manipulate chemical processes. Here we develop a theoretical framework to investigate the spectroscopy and dynamics of a molecular ensemble embedded in an optical cavity under the collective strong coupling regime. This theory is constructed by a pseudoparticle representation of the molecular Hamiltonians, mapping the polaritonic Hamiltonian into a coupled fermion-boson model under particle number constraints. The mapped model is then analyzed using the non-equilibrium Green function theory with the important self-energy diagrams identified through power counting. Numerical demonstrations are shown for the driven Tavis-Cummings model, which shows an excellent agreement with exact results.

Abstract:Resonance interaction between a molecular transition and a confined electromagnetic field can reach the coupling regime where coherent exchange of energy between light and matter becomes reversible. In this case, two new hybrid states separated in energy are formed instead of independent eigenstates, which is known as Rabi splitting. This modification of the energy spectra of the system offers new possibilities for controlled impact on various fundamental properties of coupled matter (such as the rate of chemical reactions and the conductivity of organic semiconductors). To date, the strong coupling regime has been demonstrated in many configurations under different ambient conditions. However, there is still no comprehensive approach to determining parameters for achieving the strong coupling regime for a wide range of practical applications. In this review, a detailed analysis of various systems and corresponding conditions for reaching strong coupling is carried out and their advantages and disadvantages, as well as the prospects for application, are considered. The review also summarizes recent experiments in which the strong coupling regime has led to new interesting results, such as the possibility of collective strong coupling between X-rays and matter excitation in a periodic array of Fe isotopes, which extends the applications of quantum optics; a strong amplification of the Raman scattering signal from a coupled system, which can be used in surface-enhanced and tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy; and more efficient second-harmonic generation from the low polaritonic state, which is promising for nonlinear optics. The results reviewed demonstrate great potential for further practical applications of strong coupling in the fields of photonics (low-threshold lasers), quantum communications (switches), and biophysics (molecular fingerprinting).

Abstract:An important goal of modern condensed matter physics involves the search for states of matter with new emergent properties and desirable functionalities. Although the tools for material design remain relatively limited, notable advances have been recently achieved by controlling interactions at hetero-interfaces, precise alignment of low-dimensional materials and the use of extreme pressures . Here, we highlight a new paradigm, based on controlling light-matter interactions, which provides a new way to manipulate and synthesize strongly correlated quantum matter. We consider the case in which both electron-electron and electron-photon interactions are strong and give rise to a variety of novel phenomena. Photon-mediated superconductivity, cavity-fractional quantum Hall physics and optically driven topological phenomena in low dimensions are amongst the frontiers discussed in this perspective, which puts a spotlight on a new field that we term here "strongly-correlated electron-photon science."

Theory and modeling of light-matter interactions in chemistry: current and future

Abstract:Light-matter interaction not only plays an instrumental role in characterizing materials' properties via various spectroscopic techniques but also provides a general strategy to manipulate material properties via the design of novel nanostructures. This perspective summarizes recent theoretical advances in modeling light-matter interactions in chemistry, mainly focusing on plasmon and polariton chemistry. The former utilizes the highly localized photon, plasmonic hot electrons, and local heat to drive chemical reactions. In contrast, polariton chemistry modifies the potential energy curvatures of bare electronic systems, and hence their chemistry, via forming light-matter hybrid states, so-called polaritons. The perspective starts with the basic background of light-matter interactions, molecular quantum electrodynamics theory, and the challenges of modeling light-matter interactions in chemistry. Then, the recent advances in modeling plasmon and polariton chemistry are described, and future directions toward multiscale simulations of light-matter interaction-mediated chemistry are discussed.

Abstract:In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials have emerged as a focal point in materials research, drawing increasing attention due to their potential for isolating and synergistically combining diverse atomic layers. Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are one of the most alluring van der Waals materials owing to their exceptional electronic and optical properties. The tightly bound excitons with giant oscillator strength render TMDs an ideal platform to investigate strong light-matter coupling when they are integrated with optical cavities, providing a wide range of possibilities for exploring novel polaritonic physics and devices. In this review, we focused on recent advances in TMD-based strong light-matter coupling. In the foremost position, we discuss the various optical structures strongly coupled to TMD materials, such as Fabry-Perot cavities, photonic crystals, and plasmonic nanocavities. We then present several intriguing properties and relevant device applications of TMD polaritons. In the end, we delineate promising future directions for the study of strong light-matter coupling in van der Waals materials.

Abstract:Strong coupling between molecules and confined light modes of optical cavities to form polaritons can alter photochemistry, but the origin of this effect remains largely unknown. While theoretical models suggest a suppression of photochemistry due to the formation of new polaritonic potential energy surfaces, many of these models do not account for the energetic disorder among the molecules, which is unavoidable at ambient conditions. Here, we combine simulations and experiments to show that for an ultra-fast photochemical reaction such thermal disorder prevents the modification of the potential energy surface and that suppression is due to radiative decay of the lossy cavity modes. We also show that the excitation spectrum under strong coupling is a product of the excitation spectrum of the “bare” molecules and the absorption spectrum of the molecule-cavity system, suggesting that polaritons can act as gateways for channeling an excitation into a molecule, which then reacts “normally”. Our results therefore imply that strong coupling provides a means to tune the action spectrum of a molecule, rather than to change the reaction.

Abstract:The combination of micro- or nanofluidics and strong light-matter coupling has gained much interest in the past decade, which has led to the development of advanced systems and devices with numerous potential applications in different fields, such as chemistry, biosensing, and material science. Strong light-matter coupling is achieved by placing a dipole (e.g., an atom or a molecule) into a confined electromagnetic field, with molecular transitions being in resonance with the field and the coupling strength exceeding the average dissipation rate. Despite intense research and encouraging results in this field, some challenges still need to be overcome, related to the fabrication of nano- and microscale optical cavities, stability, scaling up and production, sensitivity, signal-to-noise ratio, and real-time control and monitoring. The goal of this paper is to summarize recent developments in micro- and nanofluidic systems employing strong light-matter coupling. An overview of various methods and techniques used to achieve strong light-matter coupling in micro- or nanofluidic systems is presented, preceded by a brief outline of the fundamentals of strong light-matter coupling and optofluidics operating in the strong coupling regime. The potential applications of these integrated systems in sensing, optofluidics, and quantum technologies are explored. The challenges and prospects in this rapidly developing field are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract The light–matter interaction not only is ubiquitous in nature but also can be simulated in various artificial systems. Besides the tunability of artificial quantum systems, the experimental access to the ultra‐strong and even deep‐strong couplings has brought a regime with novel phenomenology. Theoretically the finding of the integrability for the quantum Rabi model (QRM) has attracted tremendous attention to the study of the QRM and its extensions which are fundamental models of the light–matter interaction. With the continuing enhancements of coupling strengths, a most fascinating phenomenon of these light–matter models is that they can exhibit few‐body quantum phase transitions (QPTs), while a full understanding of these QPTs is a challenge. The polaron picture is a method capable of analyzing these fundamental models in the entire coupling regime and extracting the essential physics behind the QPTs. A review of its extensive applications on the fundamental light–matter models is presented, with discussions on the phase diagrams and QPT‐related features. The universality of critical exponent of the anisotropic QRM as well as the possibility of QPTs in A 2 terms are also addressed.

Abstract:Abstract The strong light–matter interaction between the exciton of atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and photonic nanocavities leads to the formation of unique hybrid light-matter quasiparticles known as exciton-polaritons. The newly formed mixed state has the advantages of the photonic part such as rapid propagation and low effective mass and the highly desirable optical properties of TMDC’s exciton, including the interparticle strong interactions nonlinearity and spin-valley polarization. These joint properties make such systems an ideal platform for studying many compelling physics phenomena and open the possibility of designing novel optoelectronic devices. This work reviews recent progress of strong coupling between exciton in TMDC and different resonant photonic structures, such as optical microcavities, plasmonic and all-dielectric nanocavities. Furthermore, we discussed the unique valleytronic and nonlinear properties of TMDC monolayers in the strong coupling regime. Finally, we highlighted some of the challenges and potential future research opportunities in this field.

Ultrastrong light-matter interaction in a multimode photonic crystal

Abstract:Harnessing the interaction between light and matter at the quantum level has been a central theme in atomic physics and quantum optics, with applications from quantum computation to quantum metrology. Combining complex interactions with photonic synthetic materials provides an opportunity to investigate novel quantum phases and phenomena, establishing interesting connections to condensed matter physics. Here we explore many-body phenomena with a single artificial atom coupled to the many discrete modes of a photonic crystal. This experiment reaches the ultrastrong light-matter coupling regime using the circuit quantum electrodynamics paradigm, by galvanically coupling a highly nonlinear fluxonium qubit to a tight-binding lattice of microwave resonators. In this regime, the transport of a single photon becomes a many-body problem, owing to the strong participation of multi-photon bound states arising from interactions that break particle number conservation. Exploiting the effective photon-photon interactions mediated by the qubit, the transport of multiple photons leads to complex multimode dynamics that can be employed for generating a continuous reservoir of strongly-correlated photons, an important resource for quantum networks. This work opens exciting prospects for exploring nonlinear quantum optics at the single-photon level and stabilizing entangled many-body phases of light.

Abstract:Since the birth of quantum mechanics the construction and control of novel hybrid quantum states are among the dream targets of scientists. In this regard, due to recent technological advances, hybrid states based on strong coupling occurring between light and matter have become a laboratory reality. For example, it is demonstrated that strong coupling involving microcavities or surface plasmon polaritons shows great potential for novel nanoplasmonic devices such as lasers, all‐optical switching, field‐effect transistors, and for the evergreen field of quantum computation. Further developments in this field require, however, a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms governing strong coupling, especially from a time‐dependent point of view, time‐resolved spectroscopy being one of the leading experimental approaches to address this aspect. In this perspective, after a brief introduction of the strong coupling concept, the recent research progress on the dynamics of strongly coupled systems involving J‐aggregates, broadly absorptive dyes, semiconductor quantum dots, and perovskite films with either microcavities or surface plasmons polaritons is summarized and discussed. Finally, challenges and perspectives for developing strong coupling concept are further illustrated, with special attention to phonon–photon interaction, as one of the most intriguing topics in condensed matter physics.
