Abstract:Female passengers dominate the mobility by employing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Indonesia and they possess a unique travel pattern compared to men. Women require more genuine investment efforts in comfortable and safer infrastructure for accessing and utilizing public transportation. The implementation of a smart city is one of the infrastructure investments. Smart mobility is one of the service cluster divisions, and smart mobility indicators are taken into account in the implementation. The objective of this study is to convert female mobility patterns and attitudes toward BRT service into smart mobility indicators. The method used is quantitative, and the questionnaire is designed to poll 209 people. Chi-Square and Likert scale are employed to analyze those criteria. The results demonstrate that the BRT has provided the female passenger services that they require at the current service level. The passenger pattern demonstrates that women depend on the BRT service to meet their transportation needs. Furthermore, the ICT criteria as a core for smart mobility has been challenging for both parties (female passengers and BRT operator). The limitation of this study is that it cannot demonstrate empirically that smart mobility is free gender biased and gaps until public transportation is fully inclusive.

Abstract:The level of congestion in Indonesia’s big cities, including Denpasar, is already so severe. This is inseparable from the phenomenon where most people in Indonesia now have a car transportation system that is growing rapidly. Furthermore, the city is characterized by high car dependence and a low and steadily declining public transport profile. The Indonesian government seeks to transform the public transportation industry so that drivers want to change to public transportation through the implementation of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and most recently, in 2020 the government through the Ministry of Transportation launched the “Buy the Service” program or known as BTS which has been implemented in Indonesia. 5 big cities, namely: Palembang, Solo, Medan, Yogyakarta, and Denpasar. Then followed by Bandung, Makassar, Banjarmasin, Surabaya, and Banyumas in 2021. However, there is an indication that the interest of private car users to switch to using public transportation is very small. The study is intended to evaluate of service or transit improvement. Identify different categories of impacts and how to measure them, discuss the best way to evaluate public transport and identify common mistakes that distort results as well as discuss the travel impacts of changes to the transit system (BRT) and incentives (BTS). The results of this study are expected to explain ways to optimize transit benefits by increasing system efficiency, increasing passengers and creating more transit-oriented land use patterns.

Abstract:The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in the Banyumas area, Central Java, aims to provide inter-regional connectivity in Purwokerto City and Purbalingga Regency. This is one of the six BRT corridors in Central Java launched in 2018. Therefore, this study aims to examine the development of BRT corridors based on transit-integrated land use along the corridor, after five years of operation. The primary survey was conducted on land use along the corridor at a radius of 200 m and 400 m from the BRT bus stop, which was analyzed using a qualitative descriptive method. As a result, BRT Corridor 1 in Central Java can be identified for bus-based transit development. First, BRT services have connected high to very high populations. Second, BRT shelters have good access to shopping centers, culinary centers, and artificial tourism within a 200 m and 400 m radius. Third, BRT shelters are also connected to other modes of public transportation. However, the results of our study found that the BRT shelters had not been connected to pedestrian facilities. Based on these three criteria, BRT Corridor 1 in Central Java is feasible to be developed as a sustainable public transport service. However, further studies are needed to link BRT shelters with pedestrian facilities, in order to create clean and sustainable mobility.

Abstract:Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) has become a popular solution to address traffic congestion in Indonesia, including in Banyumas Regency. However, the supporting services provided by the BRT system still require improvement. This study focuses on designing the Go-Bus application, by integrating gamification elements to encourage the usage of Trans Banyumas. The Design Thinking method is used, encompassing the empathy, definition, ideation, prototype, and testing stages. This prototype undergoes User Satisfaction Testing and Single Ease Question (SEQ). the average score of 84.84% has been reached from the evaluation of 11 tasks by six respondents. Then, satisfaction score of 6.73 indicates Go-Bus as a user-friendly and satisfying application. This research aims to address challenges in motivating and altering user behavior to utilize public transportation. By incorporating gamification into the UI/UX design of the application, Go-Bus offers a solution that enhances user motivation, satisfaction, and encourages a shift towards public transportation usage

Abstract:This study is aimed at identifying the main problem in the TOD (Transit Oriented Development) area of Cikunir 2 LRT Station, namely, the lack of accessibility and adequate connectivity, especially for pedestrians and users of mass public transportation, due to the concept and infrastructure that is not optimal. The study was conducted for two months, from May to June 2023, using field observations and institutional interviews. The preliminary survey was conducted to obtain primary and secondary data, which were then processed using the analysis of the walkability, accessibility, and connectivity index. The results of this analysis are expected to provide insight into the development of access and connectivity in the area. The resulting recommendations include the provision of barrier-free pedestrian paths and separation from motor vehicles. The provision of safe crossing facilities, and increased safety through lighting and disturbance reporting instruments are also suggested. In addition, the arrangement of activity functions along the pedestrian path, improved cleanliness, air circulation, and visual attraction are suggested. Furthermore, studies on the behavioral dynamics between pedestrian and vehicle, the integration of smart technologies to enhance walkability and the environmental and health benefits of improved pedestrian infrastructure could provide valuable insights. Research on institutional integration and financial management for urban development projects would also help in optimizing the implementation of these improvements for safer and more accessible urban spaces.

Abstract:This research investigates how the Lahore Metrobus system (MBS) influences perceptions of urban space quality through the lens of urban design and transport infrastructure. Lahore is undergoing significant urban changes with the introduction of a newly constructed mass transit system, which thus necessitates a joint development strategy to preserve its cultural heritage. Recent evolutions in transport planning has heightened the interest in analyzing the way mobility factors affect the perceptions of a place's quality. The gap in previous work lies in the limited focus on qualitative, human-centered perspectives regarding the impacts of public projects like the MBS on urban space quality. This study uniquely fills this void by examining the influence of the MBS on people's lives and the quality of urban spaces. Comparing pre- and post-Metrobus scenarios, along with questionnaire surveys of riders and shopkeepers, exposes the neglect of the social image during design and construction. The system was implemented with a focus solely on hard, core infrastructure, thereby neglecting soft components such as area development, social and cultural value, and human-centered design. The government should unite transport agencies, stakeholders, and the public to craft a joint policy for enhancing revenue, ridership, and fostering transit-oriented development (TOD). Research findings will help in achieving social and cultural sustainability for upcoming transport lines in Pakistan, as well as directions for other developing nations looking to implement mass transit networks.

Abstract:Pedestrian accessibility considered as an important factor in developing a Transit Oriented Development (TOD) concept to improve peri-urban developments. Depok Baru Station is having a potential value to be expanded as a TOD area in order to support Jabodetabek urban planning. This paper aims to figure up the pedestrian accessibility levels in Depok Baru Station based on time by calculating the pedestrian walking time during transfer modes. Adopting Public Transportation Accessibility Levels (PTAL) methods, this paper will measure accessibility index (AI) using the primary data from direct observation and secondary data from related data documents. Research findings deliver accessibility index (AI) value from two modes namely commuter line and local public transport as the basic knowledge to be considered as a TOD component.

Abstract:Passenger comfort and safety is one of the main factors in making the experience of using public transportation more comfortable and attractive to passengers. This study aims to assess facility design factors such as seats and handrails that are related to ergonomics, in addition to design factors, namely safety factors by identifying and minimizing hazards that can occur to passengers and procedures that need to be carried out in the event of an accident. To assess the comfort of passengers on the bus, it was measured using the Rapid whole-body assessment (REBA) guidelines, Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) and anthropometry to accurately measure body posture, as well as Quality Function Deployment (QFD). As the result, the new handle and passenger seat were proposed to comply with the ergonomic perspective. How much level of Customer satisfaction increase, can be seen in the result of this research. From using REBA Method there's a change of score in value from before using our design customer posture got 4 for body posture evaluation score, and after using our design costumer posture score got 3 for body posture evaluation score. From using RULA method there's a change of score in value from before using our design customer posture got 4 for body posture evaluation score, and after using our design costumer posture score got 2 for body posture evaluation score. It is concluded that the new design work and proof the new design was comply with ergonomic aspect. With this research, it will be beneficial for the sustainability of consumer comfort in Transjakarta public transportation. Because with the realization of the results of this research, improvements in Transjakarta public transportation facilities to support consumer comfort can be achieved and increase customer satisfaction.

Abstract:Improving public services in the urban transportation system consists of improving transportation facilities and infrastructure, improving inter-institutional relations and increasing human resources. The transportation system for the city of Pekanbaru in 2009 began to apply the concept of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) under the name busway trans metro Pekanbaru. Over time, the trans metro busway has shrunk to become a regular bus. This can be seen that many MRT public facilities are not maintained and neglected so that public confidence in the MRT continues to decline. Abstract:This study investigates the public value of the Trans Java East bus rapid transit (BRT) system, implemented to address urban congestion in Indonesia. Employing descriptive research methods with data collected through observation, interviews, and literature review, the analysis finds that while Trans Java East meets public value criteria for accessibility, affordability, and comfort, it falls short in fully mitigating congestion. Recommendations for optimization include route expansion, improved integration with other modes of transport, and enhanced operational efficiency. The study concludes that regional BRT systems, despite limitations, offer attractive mobility alternatives and require continuous development to maximize their impact on urban transport challenges. Abstract:This report presents a study of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems using single dedicated lanes. While BRT systems with dedicated lanes may be more advantageous, physical and cost constraints may not make it possible to build BRT systems with two dedicated lanes. In these situations, a single dedicated lane may be more practical and desirable. In a single dedicate lane system, however, coordination of lane usage, passing and overtaking of other buses, are critical. In this study, the authors propose an optimization model for determining the synchronization requirements of the buses in order to minimize the total travel and dwell time. The performance of the BRT system with a single dedicated lane is then compared to a BRT system with double dedicated lanes. In addition, a speed control algorithm is is implemented to manage possible delay at intersections. A microscopic simulation is performed to examine the impact of a BRT bus on other traffic and the performance of the speed control. Simulation results show the efficacy of the speed control in handling delay at an intersection and that other traffic is hardly affected by the speed control.

Abstract:Many city bus systems have gone through crises--dropping ridership and unsustained finance--across countries over the past decades. Previous studies revealed that despite the soaring public subsidies on traditional bus services, the quality of bus services was unimproved and the responses to demand changes remained sluggish. A large number of bus users were, consequently, shifted to other transport modes, leading to a steady ridership decline which further worsens transit agencies’ financial condition. To deal with the dilemma, we integrate market-based customized bus services (MCBSs) into the traditional bus systems and propose a hybrid city bus model. Using data from Shanghai, China, we found that the MCBS had effectively responded to changing demand and achieved substantial ridership growth, maintained a healthy financial status, and provided social benefits to the transportation system. The success of MCBSs in Shanghai proves that the public transit system still has great potential and could be demand-responsive and financially sustainable at the same time. In the meantime, MCBSs have significantly helped improve transport equity in suburban areas. The hybrid city bus model can serve as a reference for different cities to reorganize their bus systems and regain the popularity, vitality, and social equity of bus services.

Abstract:Transportation is quickly evolving in the emerging smart city ecosystem with personalized ride sharing services quickly advancing. Yet, the public bus infrastructure has been slow to respond to these trends. With our research, we propose a semi-dynamic bus routing framework that is data-driven and responsive to relevant parameters in bus transport. We use newly published bus event data from a bus line in Boston and several algorithmic heuristics to create this framework and demonstrate the capabilities and results. We find that this approach yields a very promising routing infrastructure that is smarter and more dynamic than the existing system.

Abstract:<p>The potential contributors to bus rapid transit (BRT) performance are investigated within an ordered choice modelling framework, in which the dependent variable is the BRT standard (Gold, Silver, Bronze or Basic), developed by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP). The identified significant predictors are peak-hour speed, peak frequency, the average distance between stations, the length of dedicated busway, passing lanes at BRT station, covered station access, enhanced station environment, pre-board and automated fare collection and fare verification, and network integration. Based on a business-as-usual prediction and what–if analysis, this paper offers information for decision makers to plan a high-standard BRT system in line with the ITDP BRT standard.</p>

Abstract:Abstract This study aims to find the potential of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) to attract the vehicle owners from their personal vehicles i.e., motorcars and motorcycles. Stated preference survey (questionnaires) and interviews were conducted at BRT (Metro Bus) Stations for the prediction of the individuals shifting from their private vehicles to BRT. Questions were designed critically as per the requirements of the research related to numerous aspects of BRT use i.e., vehicle ownership of the travelers, driving license holder, demographic characteristics, choice to use BRT if the fare increases, trip purpose and their prior mode of transportation for the same trip. A total of 374 responses, as per the population of the study area (Islamabad-Rawalpindi, Pakistan), were collected. The Multinomial Logistic Regression (MNL) model has been employed for four categories of vehicle ownerships i.e., “Car owners using BRT”, “Bike owners using BRT”, “Both Car and Bike owners using BRT” and the last one which has been taken as reference category is “BRT users with no vehicle ownership”. The analysis indicated that BRT has attracted considerably private vehicle users specially the bike owners. Some socio-economic factors like income and residence location (accessibility) additionally have a major effect on the selection of BRT. In addition, it has been observed that fare increase can alter the mode choice of the BRT users and they will again prefer their own vehicles. The Travel choice model developed in the study can be very useful for policy makers and transport planners to enhance the BRT service and attraction, to mitigate traffic congestion and car ownership.

Abstract:This paper reports the findings of a comparative analysis of bus rapid transit (BRT) performance using information on cross-section data of 121 BRT systems throughout the world, in which random effects regression is employed as the modelling framework for stand alone patronage and ridership models, and 3SLS for joint models in which frequency is treated as an endoneous effect on patronage. A number of sources of systematic variation are identified which have a statistically significant impact on BRT patronage in terms of daily passenger numbers such as fare, frequency, connectivity, pre-board fare collection, and location of with-flow bus lanes and doorways of a bus. In addition to the patronage model, a bus frequency model is estimated to identify the context within which higher levels of service frequency are delivered, notably where there exists higher population density, more trunk lines, the corridor provides bus priority facilities such as priority lanes for many bus routes, and where there is the presence of overtaking lanes at more than half of all stations along the heaviest section of the corridor. The findings offer important insights into features of BRT systems that are positive contributors to growing patronage which should be taken into account in designing and planning BRT systems.

Abstract:The idea of the modal shift has been central to transport policymaking in the past few decades. Fare-free public transport (FFPT) schemes are among the potential policy instruments that are expected to promote modal shifts. After the peak of the COVID-19 outbreak, FFPT schemes have been implemented in large tourist destination areas in China to attract visitors. However, although FFPT has been practiced across the globe, its effect on travel modal shifts and transport equity is still under scrutiny.This paper, therefore, employs the notion of multimodality and indices for perceived accessibility and equity to investigate whether an FFPT scheme in tourist destination areas encourages a modal shift and promotes transport equity. A two-wave survey was conducted before and after the restoration of within-destination tourist bus tickets in the Mount Yandang Scenic Area, a famous tourist attraction in the Yangtze River delta. Propensity score matching (PSM) was then employed to analyse the treatment effect of the FFPT scheme. Our results indicate that, although the FFPT scheme significantly increased tourists' multimodality, the modal share of within-destination tourist buses was not significantly changed. More surprisingly, we found a modal shift from car-based services such as taxis to informal transportation provided by B & B operators and local residents. Moreover, it is notable that informal transport modes significantly influenced tourists' perceived accessibility and transport equity. Therefore, the tourism industry should encourage the integration of within-destination buses and informal transport modes to encourage multimodal travel, which is more sustainable ecologically and socially.
Evaluation of the Impacts of On-Demand Bus Services Using Traffic Simulation

Abstract:This paper uses smart card data from Melbourne's public transport network to model and evaluate the impacts of a flexible on-demand transport system. On-demand transport is an emerging mode of urban passenger transport that relies on meeting passenger demand for travel using dynamic and flexible scheduling using shared vehicles. Initially, a simulation model was developed to replicate existing fixed-schedule bus performance and was then extended to incorporate on-demand transport services within the same network. The simulation results were used to undertake a comparative analysis which included reliability, service quality, operational efficiency, network-wide effectiveness, and environmental impacts. The results showed that on-demand buses reduced average passenger trip time by 30%, increased vehicle occupancy rates from 8% to over 50%, and reduced emissions per passenger by over 70% on an average weekday compared to fixed-schedule buses. This study also offers insights for successful on-demand transport implementation, promoting urban sustainability. It also outlines future research directions, particularly the need for accurate short-term passenger demand prediction to improve service provision and passenger experience.

Abstract:Frequently, urban transportation infrastructure and services are operated in a suboptimal manner with respect to key policy objectives such as enhancing mobility, avoiding severe congestion, improving public transit ridership, reducing fuel consumption, and emissions. To overcome this problem, a hybrid simulation-optimization methodology was developed for identification of values of demand management variables that result in the most favorable travel condition in a multimodal corridor regarding a policy objective. This methodology was applied to a bus rapid transit-based major travel corridor in Ottawa (Canada). The travel simulation part of the model is implemented within the EMME/2 modeling framework, supported by a transitway simulation technique. The optimization part of the methodology is based on direct search method that identifies the optimal values of key demand management variables for policy responsiveness. Optimization results are presented for bus modal split, in-vehicle travel time, fuel consumption, and greenhouse gas emission.
