Abstract:Sustainable processes for purifying water, capturing carbon, producing biofuels, operating fuel cells, and performing energy-efficient industrial separations will require next-generation membranes. Solvent-less fabrication for membranes not only eliminates potential environmental issues with organic solvents, but also solves the swelling problems that occur with delicate polymer substrates. Furthermore, the activation procedures often required for synthesizing microporous materials such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can be reduced when solvent-less vapor-phase approaches are employed. This perspective covers several vacuum deposition processes, including initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD), initiated plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (iPECVD), solvent-less vapor deposition followed by in situ polymerization (SLIP), atomic layer deposition (ALD), and molecular layer deposition (MLD). These solvent-less vapor-phase methods are powerful in creating ultrathin selective layers for thin-film composite membranes and advantageous in conformally coating nanoscale pores for the precise modification of pore size and internal functionalities. The resulting membranes have shown promising performance for gas separation, nanofiltration, desalination, and water/oil separation. Further development of novel membrane materials and the scaling up of high-throughput reactors for solvent-less vapor-phase processes are necessary in order to make a real impact on the chemical industry in the future.
γ-Valerolactone as Bio-Based Solvent for Nanofiltration Membrane Preparation

Abstract:γ-Valerolactone (GVL) was selected as a renewable green solvent to prepare membranes via the process of phase inversion. Water and ethanol were screened as sustainable non-solvents to prepare membranes for nanofiltration (NF). Scanning electron microscopy was applied to check the membrane morphology, while aqueous rose Bengal (RB) and magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) feed solutions were used to screen performance. Cellulose acetate (CA), polyimide (PI), cellulose triacetate (CTA), polyethersulfone (PES) and polysulfone (PSU) membranes were fine-tuned as materials for preparation of NF-membranes, either by selecting a suitable non-solvent for phase inversion or by increasing the polymer concentration in the casting solution. The best membranes were prepared with CTA in GVL using water as non-solvent: with increasing CTA concentration (10 wt% to 17.5 wt%) in the casting solution, permeance decreased from 15.9 to 5.5 L/m2·h·bar while RB rejection remained higher than 94%. The polymer solubilities in GVL were rationalized using Hansen solubility parameters, while membrane performances and morphologies were linked to viscosity measurements and cloudpoint determination of the casting solutions to better understand the kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of the phase inversion process.

Abstract:Cellulose, a sustainable raw material, holds great promise as an ideal candidate for membrane materials. This work focused on establishing a green route for fabricating cellulose nanofiltration membranes by reusing a binary solvent of a mixture of ionic liquid (IL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The rheological and thermodynamic properties of cellulose solutions were thoroughly investigated to gain fundamental insights into cellulose membrane formation using a mixture solvent. The morphologies and separation performances of the cellulose membranes were also studied. Based on these results, we successfully developed a cellulose membrane with a remarkable water flux of 101.8 L/m(2)-h, and the rejections for both Congo Red and Evans Blue were higher than 99.7%. Furthermore, the cellulose membrane demonstrated excellent antifouling performance and stability in long-term operation. Moreover, we conducted an attempt on the recycling and reuse of IL and DMSO, revealing that the structure and separation performance of the cellulose membrane produced using the recovered solvent were comparable to those of the membrane obtained using the original solvent. These results highlighted a sustainable approach to fabricating high-performance cellulose membranes.
A novel green solvent alternative for polymeric membrane preparation via nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS)

Abstract:The membrane market has grown rapidly over the past several decades, supported by continuous improvements in membrane performance, module and process design, and fouling control. However, such growth will be unsustainable with current membrane fabrication methods that employ significant amounts of toxic solvents (e.g., N-methylpyrrolidone, dimethylacetamide, and dimethylformamide), thereby producing billions of liters of contaminated wastewater each year. A possible solution is to identify greener alternatives with appropriate properties that are compatible with conventional polymers. In this work, we employed a novel green solvent, Rhodiasolv PolarClean®, that is less toxic than current solvents and eco-friendly, while exhibiting the necessary properties to be employed as a solvent for membrane preparation via the nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method. Rhodiasolv PolarClean® has been successfully applied to membrane preparation for water desalination and reclamation by ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF) with conventional polymers, including polysulfone (PSF), polyethersulfone (PES), and cellulose acetate (CA). The UF membranes prepared from PES/Pluronic F127 and PSF/polyvinylpyrrolidone exhibited pure water permeabilities greater than 314.5 ± 57.8 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 and tensile strength 3.78 ± 0.12 MPa with BSA rejection of 98.1 ± 0.4%. Cellulose acetate membrane used for NF applications demonstrated pure water permeability of 1.5 ± 0.25 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 with NaCl and MgCl2 rejection of 85.1 ± 5.7% and 93.2 ± 4.7%, respectively. The performance of the prepared membranes was competitive with current state-of-the-art membranes across all applications, indicating immediate applicability to improving the sustainability of membrane fabrication processes.

Abstract:Solvent toxicity is a major barrier to sustainable fabrication of polymeric membranes. This study introduces three dibasic esters (DBEs) as alternative membrane fabrication solvents that are biodegradable, non-carcinogenic, non-corrosive, and non-hazardous. The use of DBEs in fabrication process shifts the monotectic point in the phase diagram of PVDF/solvent systems towards higher polymer concentrations, enabling membrane formation by liquid-liquid phase inversion to produce a bicontinuous structure that confers outstanding performance. The best-performing membrane prepared in this way had an exceptional flux of 42.40 kg/m2·h and a high rejection rate (>99%) in the decontamination of synthetic nuclear wastewater. Compared to membranes prepared previously using toxic and non-toxic solvents, membranes fabricated in DBEs exhibited superior mechanical performance due to their bicontinuous structure, which effectively distributes external forces throughout the membrane. Moreover, DBEs are cheaper than toxic conventional solvents and are readily available in bulk, making them attractive options for industrial-scale membrane production.

Abstract:γ-Valerolactone (GVL) can be a valid biobased replacement for toxic dipolar aprotic solvents especially in widely used cross-coupling reactions. In this contribution, we have proved that GVL can be a useful medium for the Hiyama reaction, and we developed a practical and efficient protocol for the Hiyama coupling using a nonexpensive and commercially available heterogeneous palladium catalyst without the use of any ligand or additive. Desired cross-coupling products 3a–m have been obtained in good to excellent yields (74–94%).

Abstract:Membrane technology is a sustainable process of molecular separation and purification in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, with lower energy consumption than traditional thermal methods. For sustainability reasons, the membrane fabrication itself needs to align with the 12 principles of green chemistry with low environmental impact, preferentially using natural polymers and green solvents. Membranes are currently mostly produced from petroleum-based polymers and organic solvents like dimethylformamide, which are not expected to be used in large amounts anymore. Lignin is a natural green polymer option however its low solubility in mild solvents has limited its processability into membranes. We propose a sustainable membrane fabrication using lignin fully dissolved in a green deep eutectic solvent (DES). The crosslinking with 5% epoxide in an aqueous medium enhanced the membrane stability enabling its application in an aqueous and organic solvent medium. The resulting membrane had a molecular weight cut-off of 1.3 kg/mol, a range relevant to molecular separations in the pharmaceutical and chemical industry.

Abstract:This study delves into an innovative biorefinery approach to extract multiple high-value compounds from a single biomass source, Halobacterium salinarum R1, a resilient halophilic microorganism. By using bio-based solvents, namely an aqueous solution of gamma-valerolactone (GVL) and ethanol, a simple and efficient pipeline approach was developed, recovering unique pigments, including C 50 bacterioruberin, as well as two additional fractions consisting of protein and polysaccharides. The process is based on sustainable engineering and green chemistry principles, providing a viable alternative to replacing non-renewable solvents. The study addresses environmental concerns by employing bio-based solvents while presenting a cost-effective and sustainable solution. This approach contributes to developing a high-performance and sustainable alternative, promoting the development of a blue bioeconomy.

Abstract:Green and sustainable membrane technology has recently gained attention from the membrane community to minimize the negative environmental impacts associated with conventional membrane production in industries, which rely on petrochemical engineering plastics and toxic organic solvents. While the fabrication of biobased and biodegradable polymeric membranes using common organic solvents has been reported, eco-friendly membrane-fabrication techniques using greener solvents are required to improve sustainability and reduce the negative environmental impact of the membrane industry. For the first time, this study comprehensively investigates the potential use of green solvents for preparing polylactic acid (PLA) membranes via the phase separation technique. PLA solubility and phase separation experiments, employing various green solvents were conducted to examine the potential applicability of these solvents for membrane fabrication. Porous PLA membranes exhibit different surface and pore structures depending on the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of the green solvents. Based on the phase separation study, both fine PLA ultrafiltration membranes with controllable molecular weight cut-off and mechanically robust PLA microfiltration membranes with bi-continuous pore structure were successfully prepared using methyl lactate. The prepared green membranes showed a competitive filtration performance implying that the fully bio-based PLA membranes could substitute the conventional engineering plastic-based membranes in versatile membrane filtration and separation processes, especially single-use or consumable membrane products in environmental and healthcare industries.

Abstract:Biomass, the only renewable resources of fixed carbon, shows great potential to ease the pressure on fossil energy crisis. In recent years, conversion of carbohydrate biomass into value-added products has been vastly reported. Gamma (gamma)-valerolactone (GVL), which is one of the platform chemicals, has been extensively used in industrial production. Recent trends proposed an eco-friendly processing using water and biomass-derived materials as hydrogen sources instead of high-pressure and high-purity gaseous hydrogen, avoiding storage, transportation and operation risk in the production. This review summarizes the progress in GVL production from carbohydrate biomass and highlights the novel green approach by using green reductants and non-noble-metal catalysts.

Abstract:The study proposes using the distillable ionic liquid 5-methyl-1,5,7-triaza-bicyclo-[4.3.0]non-6-enium acetate, [mTBNH][OAc], for cellulose dissolution, making it an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional solvents in the transesterification of cellulose with vinyl esters. This ionic liquid (IL) has high dissolving power for cellulose and durability for recycling. However, its high viscosity limits cellulose concentration and its expensiveness hinders commercialization. The addition of naturally derived, low-cost, and low-viscous co-solvents can reduce overall cost and viscosity. In this study, various green co-solvents, including γ-valerolactone (GVL), dimethyl isosorbide (DMI), sulfolane (SLF), and N,N ′-dimethylpropyleneurea (DMPU), were mixed with [mTBNH][OAc] to test their ability to enhance cellulose transesterification. Cellulose esters with a degree of substitution (DS) up to 1.6 have been synthesized. The chemical composition of the materials was confirmed by FTIR and NMR. Green co-solvents alter the solubility and flow activation energy of cellulose in binary solvents. The produced cellulose esters become more amorphous, and their viscosity and complex moduli decrease because of the DS changing in the following order: DMPU < SLF < DMI < GVL. The efficiency of internal plasticization of cellulose esters was studied through melt flow rheology, which indicated that it increases with increasing DS. All tested cellulose esters have almost identical degradation temperatures, as detected by TGA.

Abstract:Many traditional solvents have drawbacks including sustainability and toxicity issues. Legislation, such as REACH, is driving the move towards less hazardous chemicals and production processes. Therefore, safer bio-based solvents need to be developed. Herein, a 10 step method has been proposed for the development of new bio-based solvents, which utilises a combination of in silico modelling of Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs), experimental Kamlet-Abboud-Taft parameters, a selection of green synthetic routes followed by application testing and toxicity measurements. The challenges that the chemical industry face in the development of new bio-based solvents are highlighted through a case study on methyl(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl) methyl carbonate (MMC), which can be synthesised from glycerol. Although MMC is an attractive candidate as a replacement solvent, simply being bio-derived is not enough for a molecule to be regarded as green. The methodology of solvent development described here is a broadly applicable protocol that will indicate if a new bio-based solvent is functionally proficient, and will also highlight the importance of early stage Kamlet-Abboud-Taft parameters determination and toxicity testing in the development of a green solvent.

Abstract:The use of organic solvents in academic research and industry applications is facing increasing regulatory pressure due to environmental and health concerns. Consequently, there is a growing demand for sustainable solvents, particularly in the enzymatic synthesis and processing of polyesters. Biocatalysts offer a sustainable method for producing these materials; however, achieving high molecular weights often necessitates use of solvents. In this work, we introduce a new class of alternative aprotic solvents with medium polarity produced directly from agricultural waste biomass in up to 83 mol% yield (on xylan basis). The new solvents have a largely unmodified xylose core and acetal functionality, yet they show no peroxide formation and provide reduced flammability risk. We also demonstrate their successful application in enzymatic polycondensation reactions with Candida antarctica lipase B (CaLB). In particular, the solvent dibutylxylose (DBX) outperformed the hazardous solvent diphenyl ether and facilitated polycondensation of the lignin‐derived diester pyridine‐2,4‐dicarboxylate, yielding polyesters with a Mn of >15 kDa. Computational modelling studies provided further insight into the molecular structure and dynamics of CaLB in the presence of new solvents. Lastly, up to 98 wt% of the new xylose acetals were successfully recovered and recycled, further contributing to the sustainability of the overall process.

Abstract:The general need to slow the depletion of fossil resources and reduce carbon footprints has led to tremendous effort being invested in creating "greener" industrial processes and developing alternative means to produce fuels and synthesize platform chemicals. This work aims to design a microwave-assisted cascade process for a full biomass valorisation cycle. GVL (γ-valerolactone), a renewable green solvent, has been used in aqueous acidic solution to achieve complete biomass lignin extraction. After lignin precipitation, the levulinic acid (LA)-rich organic fraction was hydrogenated, which regenerated the starting solvent for further biomass delignification. This process does not requires a purification step because GVL plays the dual role of solvent and product, while the reagent (LA) is a product of biomass delignification. In summary, this bio-refinery approach to lignin extraction is a cascade protocol in which the solvent loss is integrated into the conversion cycle, leading to simplified methods for biomass valorisation.

Abstract:Thin-film composite membranes are widely regarded as more sustainable technologies for desalination and organic solvent nanofiltration. However, the process of fabricating these membranes is not. This is because nhexane, a toxic and hazardous solvent, or other fossil-derived oily solvents are used as the organic phase to fabricate polyamide selective layers of such membranes. Here we replaced fossil-derived solvents with benign, bio-renewable solvents that possess better environmental, health and safety metrics - cyclopentyl methyl ether (CPME) and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF). A fully aromatic polyamide thin film composite (TFC) membrane fabricated via CPME demonstrated a higher NaCl rejection (97.8%), while the same membrane fabricated using n-hexane only presented 92.4% rejection. Meanwhile a semi-aromatic polyamide TFC membrane fabricated with 2-MeTHF showed an ethanol permeance of 9.87 L m- 2 h-1 bar-1 and 97.1% RB rejection, 3.7-fold higher than the TFC fabricated using n-hexane. This demonstrated the feasibility and advantages of replacing toxic and hazardous solvents that have long been the standard solvents used in membrane fabrication, with benign alternatives. This work could potentially improve the sustainability of membrane fabrication.

Abstract:It is well-known that solvent treatment and preconditioning play an important role in rejection and flux performance of membranes due to solvent-induced swelling and solvent adsorption. Investigations into the effect of solvent treatment are scarce and application specific, and were limited to a few solvents only. This study reveals the trend in solvent treatment based on solvent polarity in a systematic investigation with the aim to harness such effect for intensification of membrane processes. Nine solvents with polarity indices ranging from 0.1 to 5.8 (hexane to acetonitrile) were used as treatment and process solvents on commercial Borsig GMT-oNF-2, Evonik Duramem 300, and emerging tailor-made polybenzimidazole membranes. TGA-GCMS, HS-GC-FID, and NMR techniques were employed to better understand the effect of solvent treatment on the polymer matrix of membranes. In this work, apart from the solvent treatment's direct effect on the membrane performance, a subsequent indirect effect on the ultimate separation process was observed. Consequently, a pharmaceutical case study employing chlorhexidine disinfectant and antiseptic was used to demonstrate the effect of solvent treatment on the nanofiltration-based purification. It is shown that treatment of polybenzimidazole membranes with acetone resulted in a 25% increase in product recovery at 99% impurity removal. The cost of the process intensification is negligible in terms of solvent consumption, mass intensity, and processing time.
Glycerol eutectics as sustainable solvent systems

Abstract:In this work the use of glycerol as a hydrogen bond donor in Deep Eutectic Solvents is studied. The physical properties of choline chloride mixtures with glycerol are quantified and it is shown that eutectic mixtures can circumvent some of the difficulties of using glycerol as a solvent viz. high viscosity and high melting point. The solvent properties are characterised using polarity parameters and the values are similar to other ionic liquids although it is shown that this procedure is a poor method of characterising Lewis basicity. The application of these liquids to the esterification of glycerol is used as a demonstration of the ability to tune a reaction with the quaternary ammonium halide acting as a quasi-protecting group. The liquids represent a sustainable way of preparing non-toxic, tuneable solvent systems.

Abstract:The energy crisis in the world is increasing rapidly owing to the shortage of fossil fuel reserves. Climate change and an increase in global warming necessitates a change in focus from petroleum-based fuels to renewable fuels such as biofuels. The remodeling of existing separation processes using various nanomaterials is of a growing interest to industrial separation methods. Recently, the design of membrane technologies has been the most focused research area concerning fermentation broth to enhance performance efficiency, while recovering those byproducts to be used as value added fuels. Specifically, the use of novel nano material membranes, which brings about a selective permeation of the byproducts, such as organic solvent, from the fermentation broth, positively affects the fermentation kinetics by eliminating the issue of product inhibition. In this review, which and how membrane-based technologies using novel materials can improve the separation performance of organic solvents is considered. In particular, technical approaches suggested in previous studies are discussed with the goal of emphasizing benefits and problems faced in order to direct research towards an optimized membrane separation performance for renewable fuel production on a commercial scale.

Abstract:Although glycerol has been a well-known renewable chemical for centuries, its commercial relevance has increased considerably in the last few years because of its rising inevitable formation as a by-product of biodiesel production. The present review gives a broad overview on the chemistry of glycerol starting from the classic esters and oligomers to new products like glycerol carbonate, telomers, branched alkyl ethers, propanediols and epoxides. In particular, the novel possibilities to control the numerous addition, reduction and oxidation reactions via heterogeneous, homogeneous and biocatalysis will be presented. A benchmark will be given to determine the products which will have the best chances of entering the market and which processes are currently most developed.

Abstract:Membrane-based liquid filtration systems are key process engineering platforms for the chemical industry, particularly for solvent intensive processes. While they are used in a large scale for desalination, in water treatment, and in the food industry, polymeric membranes are mostly fabricated from solutions in organic solvents with concerning toxicity. Herein, we report a green fabrication method using decanoic acid as an alternative green solvent. The low vapor pressure, relative to common organic solvents, reduces the toxicity and the harm to the environment. The decanoic acid was used to dissolve trimesoyl chloride and reacted with polyethylenimine in the aqueous solution via an interfacial polymer reaction to produce a thin film composite membrane. The resultant membrane had high permeances for water (∼52 L m–2 h–1 bar–1) and organic solvents (16 to 124 L m–2 h–1 bar–1) and selectivity in the nanofiltration range. Therefore, our method of membrane preparation can offer an excellent and green platform for molecular separations for the chemical and biochemistry industry.Green fabrication method using decanoic acid as an alternative green solvent for thin-film composite membrane via interfacial reaction.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
