Abstract:In this paper, we propose DragonFly, a drone-based data collection framework to enhance real-time situational awareness in high-rise buildings, focusing specifically on mission-critical high-rise fire scenarios. The goal of our proposed solution is to use multiple drones with visual sensors to collect reliable and timely data for monitoring the exterior of a high-rise building. Drones are especially useful in obtaining data from hard-to-access regions in high-rise fires that are used to monitor fire/smoke that might have propagated to higher floors, detect the presence of humans requiring assistance near windows, and determine window open/close states which can have a significant impact on the speed and direction of fire spread. Given a dynamically evolving set of events and multiple drones, the core challenge addressed is to develop a plan for multiple drones to gather a set of observations that can improve both the coverage (identify more events) and accuracy (obtain fine-grained for improved event detection). We develop a solution for the Multi-drone Waypoint scheduling problem (NP-hard) in two steps: 1) allocation of monitoring tasks (AMT) to individual drones and 2) dynamic waypoint scheduling (DWS) that determines the waypoint sequence for each drone to visit. We evaluate our proposed approach using a simulated high-rise fire scenario with a realistic fire spread model and study the applicability and efficiency of the proposed algorithms compared to baseline techniques. The simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed AMT-DWS algorithms. DragonFly achieve 33% fewer missing events and up to 39 times gain in accuracy, captured as the minimum weighted AUC (Area Under Curve) as compared to baseline algorithms. DragonFly delivers over 85% missing events and about 1.3 times the minimum weighted AUC in comparison to current approaches.

Abstract:Firefighting in high-rise buildings remains a difficult problem in the world because fire extinguishing equipment and tactics have many deficiencies in dealing with such building fires, especially for buildings higher than 50 m. In the present study, the LY100 fire extinguishing system is taken as an example to introduce the application of the fire drone in the fire control of high-rise buildings. The LY100 fire extinguishing system mainly contains the twin-rotor drone, high-pressure liquid fire extinguishing equipment, pressure fire extinguishing equipment, associated vehicle and extinguishing agent. The LY100 system can be deployed quickly and operated flexibly. Based on such advantages, the indoor fire, exterior thermal insulation layer fire and top platform fire of high-rise building can be extinguished in a timely manner with the LY100 system. In addition, four kinds of firefighting tactics are described in this paper, including one drone operation, double drone cooperative operation, three or more drone cooperative operations, and cooperating with the lifting fire truck. Finally, the experiments are presented to verify the spraying distance of the fire drone system.

Abstract:As a fire erupts, the first few minutes can be critical, and first respondents must race to the scene to analyze the situation and act fast before it gets out of hand. Factors such as road traffic condition and distance may not allow quick rescue operation using traditional means and methods, leading to unmanageable spreading of fire, injuries or even deaths that can be avoided. FireFly drone-based rescue consists of a squad of highly equipped drones that will be the first responders to the fire site. Their intervention will make the task of the fire rescue team much more effective and will contribute to reduce the overall damage. As soon as the fire is detected by in-building implanted sensors, the fire department would deploy a set of FireFly drones that would fly to the site, scan the building, and send live fire status information to the Fire fighter team. The drones would have the ability to identify trapped humans using AI based pattern recognition tools (using sensors and thermal cameras) and then drop them rescue kits as appropriate. The drones will also be equipped with fire detection and recognition capabilities and be able to drop fire extinguishing balls as first attempts to put off seeds of fires before they evolve. The integration of drones with firefighting will allow for ease of access and control of fire outbreaks. Drones will also result in increased response time, prevention of further damage, and allow relaying of vital information to out of reach places regarding the characteristics of the fire scene.

Abstract:It is always challenging to seek external rescue assistance in high-rise building fires. Therefore, it is critical for individuals to master survival skills. For crowd dynamics modeling, previous research focused on numerical simulations and building designs with little attention to the self-rescue mechanism. It is critical to understanding crowd evacuations and better response strategies. We modeled the Grenfell Tower (a high-rise building with a complicated structure) case in 2017. Based on the percolation and social force models, we build an agent-based model to simulate individual behaviors inside. We obtain the optimal solution and robust paralleled outcomes under all counterfactual situations based on precisely matching tangible case outcomes (fire duration, deaths, and injuries). For individuals, mastering self-rescue skills is better at reducing social losses (deaths & injuries). In terms of high-rise buildings design, the central alarm system is also useful to reduce them. Besides, the crowd evacuation guided by the social force model also reduces deaths & injuries. This work provides insight into better high-rise building design and practical response strategies for societies. The central alarm system and fire-proof materials should be used in high-rise buildings. The residents should have routine training in social force-based evacuations and survival (self-rescue) skills to better the evacuation process and outcome under natural disasters and social emergencies.

Abstract:The fire protection problems of high-rise building become increasingly highlighted.The operating stability of the fire-fighting robots which were suspended to the helicopter is essential for the shooting accuracy of the pneumatic fire monitor. In this paper, the mechanical mechanism of the fire-extinguisher cannon in conditions of different forces and initial disturb-ance of the system is analyzed to the question of shooting accuracy.The mechanism model of ballistic trajectory of the fire-ex-tinguisher cannon and the system stability during the aftereffect period is established.The results verify the feasibility of system solutions, and it provides a theoretical basis for the parameters setting of the robot posture adjustment system.

Abstract:Forest fires can develop rapidly and may cause a wide range of hazards. Therefore, aerial firefighting, which has the ability to respond and reach fire fields quickly, is of great significance to the emergency response to and subsequent extinguishing of forest fires. The burning of forest fires generates a lot of heat and smoke, which changes the air flow environment and vision over the region and brings challenges to aerial firefighting. In the present work, aerial forest firefighting simulation was divided into the forest fire spread model, the air flow model and the aircraft flight dynamic and automatic control model. Each model was constructed based on a physical method. An integrated framework was designed to realize the interaction among fire fields, airfields, and aircraft, and is verified. The proposed framework can be used for the emergency response decision of aerial forest fire fighting and subsequent fire-fighting mission planning.

Abstract:In recent years, with the steady and rapid growth of the national economy, various industries have developed rapidly and the resulting fire accidents have also been on the rise. This study mainly discusses the control system of a fire rescue robot for a high-rise building design. Robot fire detection method involves obtaining the video image of the fire detection area through a high-definition camera, performing image preprocessing on the current frame image of the video in the robot operating system to obtain the image; and performing the flame area segmentation based on the Ohta color space and the Otsu threshold segmentation algorithm on the image, to obtain the segmented image; through the interframe difference method, the preprocessed image of the previous frame is subtracted from the current frame image and the moving area of the image is segmented to obtain the segmented image; the obtained segmented image is combined with the segmented image in the robot operating system and images are intersected to obtain a segmented image with the characteristics of flame motion; based on other characteristics of the flame, flame recognition is performed on the area in the segmented image. Fires in high-rise buildings are increasing gradually, which seriously endangers the safety of human life and property. The firefighting robot and its control system play an important role in the fire protection of high-rise buildings. The purpose of this study is to analyze the disaster relief effect of a firefighting robot and control system in high-rise buildings. In this study, we use MATLAB software to model and simulate the rescue situation of a firefighting robot in high-rise buildings. The fuzzy control system established in the fuzzy logic toolbox of MATLAB can easily replace human field work and can change the control rules and membership function in the FIS editor. The results show that the rise time and adjustment time of the system are basically the same under the condition of variable load stiffness. The maximum overshoot is 0.59%, and the steady-state error is 0.19%. The maximum overshoot is 1.0148%, and the stability error is 0.46%. It is concluded that the expert PID algorithm is efficient and practical. It can be concluded that the robot position control system adopts PID control algorithm, and the attitude control system adopts expert PID control algorithm. This research provides some value for the development and design of firefighting robots in high-rise buildings in the future and also brings important significance.

Abstract:Purpose. Applying FDS modelling to detect the influence of structural parameters of facade fire eaves, the effectiveness of fire prevention by vertical building structures in high-rise buildings.Methods. To calculate the temperature in the high-rise building model used Pyrosim computer system that serves as the user's shell application Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). This FDS system uses numerical algorithms to solve the complete Navier-Stokes differential equation system to determine temperature and other hazardous factors during a fire.Results. The results of FDS modelling during substantiation of constructive parameters of fire eaves, which protrude beyond the facade and located on the border of fire compartments along the contour of high-rise buildings with a nominal height of more than 73.5 m, are presented. These studies are aimed at their use by design institutions during the development of design parameters of fire eaves, which protrude beyond the facade and are located on the border of fire compartments along the contour of high-rise buildings, as well as to improve the regulatory framework for fire safety.

Optimal Wildfire Escape Route Planning for Drones under Dynamic Fire and Smoke

Abstract:In recent years, the increasing prevalence and intensity of wildfires have posed significant challenges to emergency response teams. The utilization of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, has shown promise in aiding wildfire management efforts. This work focuses on the development of an optimal wildfire escape route planning system specifically designed for drones, considering dynamic fire and smoke models. First, the location of the source of the wildfire can be well located by information fusion between UAV and satellite, and the road conditions in the vicinity of the fire can be assessed and analyzed using multi-channel remote sensing data. Second, the road network can be extracted and segmented in real time using UAV vision technology, and each road in the road network map can be given priority based on the results of road condition classification. Third, the spread model of dynamic fires calculates the new location of the fire source based on the fire intensity, wind speed and direction, and the radius increases as the wildfire spreads. Smoke is generated around the fire source to create a visual representation of a burning fire. Finally, based on the improved A* algorithm, which considers all the above factors, the UAV can quickly plan an escape route based on the starting and destination locations that avoid the location of the fire source and the area where it is spreading. By considering dynamic fire and smoke models, the proposed system enhances the safety and efficiency of drone operations in wildfire environments.

Abstract:Recently, drones have been utilized in various fields. The drones for firefighting have the capability to carry out various missions such as delivery of items or assistance. In this paper, we explain the drone with six powerful motors and a multi-functional gripper on the side of the drone used for conducting various missions. The drone body, which is lightweight but with high stiffness, is composed of carbon fibers. We used a PID controller and analyzed acquired sensor data during a flight by using Mission Planner software in order to improve flight stability and safety. The suggested drone could be used in firefighting missions, such as docking to the electric pole or delivering items horizontally using the equipped gripper. In addition, after fixing on the pole, equipped robot arms can conduct missions for workers at high altitude. Therefore, it could provide the safety of the firefighter and survivors.

Abstract:This study addresses the optimization of the location of a radioactive-particle sensor on a drone. Based on the analysis of the physical process and of the boundary conditions introduced in the model, computational fluid dynamics simulations were performed to analyze how the turbulence caused by drone propellers may influence the response of the sensors. Our initial focus was the detection of a small amount of radioactivity, such as that associated with a release of medical waste. Drones equipped with selective low-cost sensors could be quickly sent to dangerous areas that first responders might not have access to and be able to assess the level of danger in a few seconds, providing details about the source terms to Radiological-Nuclear (RN) advisors and decision-makers. Our ultimate application is the simulation of complex scenarios where fluid-dynamic instabilities are combined with elevated levels of radioactivity, as was the case during the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear power plant accidents. In similar circumstances, accurate mapping of the radioactive plume would provide invaluable input-data for the mathematical models that can predict the dispersion of radioactivity in time and space. This information could be used as input for predictive models and decision support systems (DSS) to get a full situational awareness. In particular, these models may be used either to guide the safe intervention of first responders or the later need to evacuate affected regions.

Abstract:When fire occurs in an offshore platform, evacuation plays a vital role in safeguarding the evacuees’ lives. How to efficiently evacuate to minimize the loss of life is a dynamic problem, requiring a continuing research effort with changing technologies. In this research, a dynamic optimisation model is proposed to determine the optimized evacuation route in the fire scenarios of offshore platforms. Firstly, the road network model of an offshore platform is built in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment based on the data from a real drilling platform. Secondly, drilling platform fires are simulated using Fire Dynamics Simulation (FDS), and then the fire simulation data is input into the proposed road network model. Thirdly, the traditional Ant Colony Optimisation (ACO) Algorithm is improved by considering the influence of fire on evacuation to study the impact of high temperature, smoke and toxic gases on evacuation. Next, the improved route optimisation algorithm and a road network model of the offshore platform are integrated to formulate a dynamic route optimisation model for evacuation in fire scenarios. Finally, a case study is conducted to demonstrate the model on a drilling platform of Nan Hai in China. The results reveal that the equipment area around the fire source on the lower deck is mostly affected by the smoke. It is validated that the proposed model can be used to optimize the evacuation route to guide evacuees avoid the hazardous area according to the dynamic spread of smoke. This study can provide fast real-time guidance for the trapped evacuees during the evacuation process on offshore platforms by considering the influence of fire on evacuation.

Abstract:This paper presents a GIS based dynamic modeling of fire spread using cellular automation simulation, given a set of stochastic ignition points and initial environmental settings. Modeling every individual room in the building as a cell, we have developed the algorithm for fire spread both from room to room inside a building and from one building to another due to radiation and branding. The models perform in the cellular automation programming and the results are intended to be dynamically visualized in a Geographic Information System (GIS) that include data of digital elevation model, 3D building models and environmental settings, such as temperature, wind direction and velocity.
