Abstract:A facile self-templating and activation-free method to fabricate the hierarchical porous carbons (HPCs) from poly(vinylidene chloride) (PVDC)-based block copolymers is reported in this article. A series of block copolymers consisted of PVDC and the polystyrene (PS) blocks were prepared via RAFT living radical polymerization. Effects of molar ratio between the PVDC and the PS blocks on the microphase separation and thermal degradation of the PVDC- b -PS copolymers, and the microstructure of the as-prepared porous carbons were investigated. The results show that the PVDC block acts as a good kind of carbon precursor capable of forming micropores (0.5–0.6 nm) due to the diffusion of small molecules eliminated during the degradation of the PVDC block, and the microdispersed PS block acts as a mesopore extender to generate the mesopores (3–30 nm) by the decomposition of the PS phase. The as-prepared HPCs have the unique structures with three-dimensionally interconnected micropores and mesopores. The high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area (1220 m 2 /g) and total pore volume (0.92 cm 3 /g) were achieved through controlling the composition of block copolymer. The method is facile to prepare the HPCs and suitable to the PVDC-based copolymers with other pyrolyzable block.

Abstract:Herein, we present a facile synthesis of hierarchical carbon frameworks with microporous skeletons and interconnected meso/macropores by employing poly(vinylidene chloride-co-methyl acrylate)-b-polystyrene copolymers as precursors. The obtained porosity can be tuned over a broad range via well-selected block proportions of the precursor, enabling its advantageous applications in target-oriented energy storage systems.

Abstract:Block copolymer-based porous carbon fibers (PCFs) exhibit hierarchical porous structures, high surface areas, and exceptional electrochemical properties. However, the design of block copolymers for PCFs remains a challenge in advancing this type of fibrous material for energy storage applications. Herein, we have systematically synthesized a series of poly(methyl methacrylate-block-acrylonitrile) (PMMA-b-PAN) with well-controlled molecular weights and compositions to study the physical and electrochemical properties of PCFs. PCFs are synthesized via electrospinning, self-assembly, oxidation, and pyrolysis with no additives or chemical activation. By adjusting the molecular weights of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and poly(methyl methacrylate) blocks, we have achieved tunable mesopore sizes ranging from 10.9 to 18.6 nm and specific capacitances varied from 144 to 345 F g (-1) at 10 mV s(-1). Interestingly, regardless of the volume fraction of PAN, all the block copolymers produce hierarchical porous structures because of the self-assembly and cross-linking of PAN. Block copolymers with a PAN volume fraction of near 50% show the highest surface areas and gravimetric capacitances. The PCFs represent a new platform material with tunable specific surface areas, pore sizes, and electrochemical properties. This work has an immediate impact on designing block copolymers to create PCFs for applications in energy conversion and storage.

Abstract:The utilization of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a monomer for copolymerization with three-membered cyclic ethers, also known as oxiranes or epoxides, has received much renewed interest due to the need for degradable polymeric materials derived from renewable resources. Since the early discovery of the catalytic coupling of CO2 and oxiranes to afford polycarbonates, the area has progressed significantly over the 50 succeeding years. Herein, we describe the currently well-established catalyzed copolymerization process of oxiranes and carbon dioxide utilizing homogeneous metal catalysts. Pertinent to the commercial success of this process is the presence of rapid and reversible chain-transfer reactions that occur in the presence of protic impurities or additives leading to the formation of macropolyols. The focus of this review is to summarize the various synthetic strategies for the production of designer block copolymers for various applications in material science and biomedicine.

Abstract:Growing demands in flexible electronics have stimulated the rapid development of electrodes with multifaceted attributes. Porous carbon fibers (PCFs) provide a potential means to simultaneously achieve flexibility, durability, and energy density. High energy density often necessitates large surface areas and thus pores, but pores generally diminish the mechanical PAN) and examine the changes in the polymer morphology and resulting PCF porosity and flexibility in response to relative humidity (R.H.). The determining factors of the fiber morphology evolve from block copolymer microphase separation at 40-50% R.H. to vapor-induced phase separation (VIPS) combined with microphase separation at 60-70% R.H. and to vapor-induced precipitation at 80-90% R.H. After pyrolysis, the PCFs show the corresponding porosity, flexibility, and electrochemical properties. Because VIPS enables the polymer fibers to outwardly reorganize PAN and produce continuous graphitic structures, PCFs prepared from polymer fibers electrospun at 70% R.H. develop a mesoporous core and long-range graphitic carbon sheath. Owing to the core-sheath structure, these PCFs exhibit mechanical strength to withstand repeated bending while retaining a 249 +/- 20 F g-1 capacitance in flexible capacitor assemblies. This work highlights the potential for controlling block copolymer morphologies by processing conditions and PCF properties, providing a platform for designing flexible PCFs for energy and environmental sciences.

Abstract:Porous carbon materials are of interest in many applications because of their high surface area and physicochemical properties. Conventional syntheses can only produce randomly porous materials, with little control over the pore-size distributions, let alone mesostructures. Recent breakthroughs in the preparation of other porous materials have resulted in the development of methods for the preparation of mesoporous carbon materials with extremely high surface areas and ordered mesostructures, with potential applications as catalysts, separation media, and advanced electronic materials in many scientific disciplines. Current syntheses can be categorized as either hard-template or soft-template methods. Both are examined in this Review along with procedures for surface functionalization of the carbon materials obtained.

Abstract:Nanosized particles have a large surface area to facilitate interfacial contact and thus are promising fillers for polymers. However, poor dispersion of nanoparticles limits the reinforcement effect. Herein, by rationally tailoring the internal porous structures, specific surface area, and surface chemistry, we prepared porous carbon fiber (PCF) filler from poly(acrylonitrile-block-methyl methacrylate) (PAN-b-PMMA) block copolymers. PCF had a three-dimensional porous network and provided improved filler-matrix interactions. Owing to the enhanced filler-matrix interlocking, large interfacial contact area, and strong interfacial affinity induced by nitrogen and oxygen doping, PCF was uniformly dispersed in rubber. Uncured nature rubber composites containing 5 parts of PCF per hundred parts of rubber (phr) showed 4.3 times higher Young's modulus and twice the tensile strength at 300% strain compared to the neat rubber. PCF represents an effective reinforcing filler for polymers.

Abstract:This review highlights recent advances in the synthesis of carbon dioxide (CO2)-based copolymers with both linear (di-, tri-, and multi-block, etc.) and non-linear (star-block and grafting) architectures. The corresponding catalytic systems are summarized. The microstructure and polymerization mechanism of various types of CO2-based copolymers, including block polycarbonates and block copolymers of polycarbonate with polyester, polyether, polyvinyl, and polydiene are discussed. The junction unit between two blocks, which indicates an abrupt change in the chain microstructure and property, is emphasized to define the microstructure of CO2-based block copolymers. Special attention was paid to one-pot terpolymerization for the synthesis of CO2-based block and grafting copolymers. Finally, the thermal, mechanical, and degradation properties and self-assembly of CO2-based block and grafting copolymers are reviewed. Prospective future research and applications of this new class of polymeric materials are discussed.

Abstract:Block copolymer (BCP)-based porous carbon fibers represent an emerging structural and functional material for mechanical reinforcement and electrochemical energy storage. Herein, by gel-spinning polymer precursors of poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) and poly(methyl methacrylate)-block-poly(acrylonitrile) (PMMA-b-PAN), we have produced a series of carbon fibers and systematically studied the morphological, mechanical, and electrochemical properties. Porous carbon fibers with BCP in the sheath exhibit a tensile strength of 1.1 GPa, tensile modulus of ∼190 GPa, and electrochemical capacitance of 11 F g−1 at 10 mV s−1 when pyrolyzed at 1315 °C under tension. Without tension and at a pyrolysis temperature of 800 °C, the fibers with BCP as both the sheath and core components achieve the highest electrochemical capacitance of 70 F g−1 at 10 mV s−1. The characteristic correlation length of PMMA-b-PAN calculated through thermodynamically governed computational method, provides an estimate of pore size in the carbon fibers. Pore generation and their size in the carbon fibers were driven by kinetic processing parameters, in addition to the thermodynamic phase separation. This study shows that gel-spinning of bicomponent PAN/PMMA-b-PAN fibers provide a versatile means for tuning the mechanical and electrochemical properties of porous carbon fibers, thus allowing for their potential use as structural energy storage materials.

Abstract:The incorporation of robust porous frameworks into polymer fibers with handleable morphologies and flexible chemical compositions exhibits significant advantages for device fabrication in a wide range of applications. However, the soft linear polymeric chains of the fibers make the generation of nanopores extremely challenging. Herein, a facile synthetic strategy based on a combination of functional monomer grafting and hyper-crosslinking technology is developed for the porous engineering of polymeric fibers. In this methodology, the nanoporous framework originating from the hyper-crosslinking of aromatic monomers is covalently grafted onto fibers, which is beneficial to retaining their unique fiber morphology and to preserving their excellent mechanical properties. Moreover, this promising protocol can be further extended to the porous functionalization of polymeric matrices with diverse morphologies for target-specific applications.

Abstract:Porous materials with their ordered bicontinuous structures have attracted great interest owing to ordered periodic structures as well as 3D interconnected network and pore channels. Bicontinuous structures may favor efficient mass diffusion to the interior of materials, thus increasing the utilization ratio of active sites. In addition, ordered bicontinuous structures confer materials with exceptional optical and magnetic properties, including tunable photonic bandgap, negative refraction, and multiple equivalent magnetization configurations. The attractive structural advantages and physical properties have inspired people to develop strategies for preparing bicontinuous‐structured porous materials. Among a few synthetic approaches, the self‐assembly of block copolymers (BCPs) represents a versatile strategy to prepare various bicontinuous‐structured functional materials with pore sizes and lattice parameters ranging from 1 to 500 nm. This article overviews progress in this appealing area, with an emphasis on the synthetic strategies, the structural control (including topologies, pore sizes and unit cell parameters), and their potential applications in energy storage and conversion, metamaterials, photonic crystals, cargo delivery and release, nanoreactors, and biomolecule selection. Abstract:The molecular design of porous solids from predefined building blocks, in particular metal-organic and covalent frameworks, has been a tremendous success in the past two decades approaching record porosities and more importantly was an enabler for integrating predefined molecular functionality (enantioselectivity, optical and catalytic properties) into pore walls. Recent efforts indicate that this concept could also be applicable to rationally design porous and nanostructured carbonaceous materials, a class of materials hitherto and especially in the past often considered as "black magic" in terms of pore-wall structure definition and surface functionality. Carbon precursors with structural and compositional information in their molecular backbone, pre-formed covalent bonds, or integrated functional groups enable the design of carbon materials that can be tailored for certain applications. We review this exciting field of synthetic approaches based on molecular building blocks such as ionic liquids, bio molecules, or organic precursor monomers enabling the design of advanced carbonaceous architectures such as porous carbons, porous carbon-rich polymers or graphene nanoribbons. Moreover, our review includes approaches using the reactive and thermal transformation of periodic crystalline structures such as metal-organic frameworks, or carbides into equally defined carbon material. Such molecularly designed carbons are not only ideal model materials for fundamental science but also emerge in applications with until now unattained functionality.

Abstract:The syntheses of porous carbons are summarized by dividing them into microporous, mesoporous, macroporous, and hierarchically porous carbons. They are described on the basis of synthesis procedures, i.e., activation, template-assisted carbonization, and precursor design, including polymer blend, carbon aerogels, etc. For the synthesis of macroporous carbons, carbonization with blowing, exfoliation of graphite, and assemblage of fibrous carbons are also described.

Abstract:The invention discloses a porous carbon fiber and a preparation method thereof. The method comprises the following steps: spinning a spinning liquid composed of a pore forming agent, a high polymer and an organic solvent, carbonizing, and pickling to obtain the porous carbon fiber. The method has the advantages of simple preparation, high output and low cost, and allows the porous carbon fiber simultaneously having micro-pores, meso-pores and macro-pores to be prepared; and the carbon fiber prepared in the invention is more flexible than that of carbon fibers prepared through other methods.
