Abstract:This chapter deals with the archaeological record of the Dongson Culture, which dates to the first millennium BC and is located in the northern region of present-day Vietnam. Renowned for its large, ceremonial bronze drums and viewed by many as the foundational culture for an emerging Vietnamese civilization, bearers of the Dongson Culture were farming societies scattered throughout the Bac Bo region of Vietnam along its main river systems. These communities were marked by sophisticated bronze-working industries, intensifying agricultural practices, and degrees of social differentiation and political complexity. They were well positioned for interaction and exchange with others throughout the local area and further afield, connecting Dongson societies with counterparts elsewhere in present-day areas of central Vietnam, southern China, Laos, and Thailand.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe 485 Oliva spp. shell beads recovered from four archaeological cave sites Jerimalai, Lene Hara, Matja Kuru 1, and Matja Kuru 2, located in Timor-Leste, Island Southeast Asia. While Pleistocene-aged examples of modified marine shells used for personal ornamentation are common in African and Eurasian assemblages, they are exceedingly rare in Southeast Asia, leading some researchers to suggest that these Modern Human societies were less complex than those found further west. In Timor-Leste, the lowest Oliva bead to be recovered was directly dated to ca. 37,000 cal. BP, making it the oldest piece of personal ornamentation in Southeast Asia. Morphometric, taphonomic, use wear, and residue analyses of these beads alongside modern reference specimens, and experimentally made examples indicate that the Oliva shells were modified to be strung consecutively (as in a necklace), and while their mode of production changed remarkably little over the thousands of years they were utilised, an increase in their deposition around 6,000 cal. BP suggests that there was a change in their use coinciding with sea-level stabilisation. These tiny beads demonstrate that early Island Southeast Asian societies produced the same kinds of symbolic material culture we have come to expect from the more intensively studied African/Eurasian region, and that limited sampling and poor recovery methods have biased our perspectives of this region.

Abstract:Northern Vietnam is situated on a major route of Pleistocene hominin dispersal in East Asia, and the area's karstic caves preserve many prehistoric shell middens. Fossil and genomic evidence suggest a complex human history in this region and more widely across Southeast Asia and southern China, but related archaeological investigations are hampered by challenging site stratigraphies. Recent investigations of shell middens in other geographical settings have revealed the microstratigraphic complexity of these anthropogenic deposits. But caves promote distinctive site formation processes, while tropical climates may catalyse geomorphic and diagenetic changes. These environmental factors complicate the interpretation of northern Vietnam's shell middens and constraining their effects upon the formation, preservation and destruction of these sites is critical to understanding the archaeology of this region. We examine two archaeological cave sites, dated to the Late Pleistocene and located in the limestone uplands surrounding the Hanoi Basin. Each contains multiple shell midden layers associated with prehistoric occupation and burials. Using thin-section micromorphology (microstratigraphy), we reconstruct the depositional and post-depositional histories of these sites, presenting a geoarchaeological framework of interpretation that is applicable to shell middens in mainland Southeast Asia and tropical zones more widely. This work represents a further step towards improving our understanding of prehistoric human dispersals and adaptations in this region. Abstract:This paper presents the results of geoarchaeological and geochronological investigations at Con Moong Cave, North Vietnam. Beneath the published, terminal Pleistocene sequence, recent excavations have uncovered a similar to 5m stratigraphic sequence containing flaked stone artifacts and sedimentary features that indicate extensive post-depositional change. As the effects of tropical conditions on Pleistocene cave sediments are poorly resolved, a range of complementary techniques was selected to reconstruct the nature of on-site sedimentation and occupation, while assessing the taphonomy of archaeological and palaeoecological materials. Our approach incorporates microstratigraphic, geochemical and sedimentological analyses, using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating to estimate the time of sediment deposition in the cave. This case study has broad application to tropical zones worldwide. Sedimentation began in early Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 4, while micromorphologically observed human occupation commenced before 42 thousand years ago (ka). By placing our results within the context of published, high-resolution regional records of climate, we demonstrate that on-site rhythms of Pleistocene occupation correlated with environmental changes in the region. During MIS 3, episodic abandonment of the site coincided with periods of drier conditions, while rapid climate fluctuations in MIS 2 corresponded with short-lived occupation events and a switch to predominantly geogenic deposition in the cave.

Abstract:The preservation and transmission of cultural knowledge about bronze drums in Donglan County, Guangxi, China, is crucial for protecting a valuable cultural heritage that has been passed down through generations. In Guangxi, Guizhou, and Yunnan, several ethnic groups, such as the Zhuang, Buyi, Miao, and others, still include bronze drums in their cultural practices. These drums function as visible connections to ancient customs and are actively conserved through on-site visits and recordings of performances. Donglan County in Guangxi is crucial to this effort, as it has been officially designated as a national-level zone for the protection of both cultural and ecological resources starting in 2023. This project emphasizes the dedication to protecting intangible cultural resources, with cooperation between communities and educational institutions guaranteeing the transfer of this cultural knowledge to future generations through education. The clear differentiation between male and female bronze drums, as well as their specific acoustic characteristics, contributes to the cultural wealth of this heritage. This is preserved through cultural events and educational programs, ensuring its lasting importance for future generations.
An Ethno-archaeological Investigation on the Early Seagoing Boats of Indigenous Yue Peoples in Southern China

Abstract:The boat-building technology of the Prehistoric Yue peoples,the indigenous ethnic groups that occupy today's southeastern China,is one of the major issues of the World maritime history.Due to the intimate relationship between the Yue peoples and the pacific Austronesians,the Austronesian sailing boat technologies such as outrigger canoe and double canoe with different kinds of triangle sail will enlighten the research on the prehistoric seagoing boats of indigenous ethnic groups of South China.Outrigger canoe and double-body canoe not only solved the problem of side-way swinging,or even overturning of the single-body canoe,but also retains the light and coherent structural advantages of the canoe.They have become the stable sea-going boats.There appeared to be great similarities between the "Mother-Son Boat" of the Hmong ethnic group of Shidong in Guizhou province and the outrigger double-body canoe of the Austronesians.The former should be the logical prototype of the latter.It is very likely that the former is the living fissile of the sea-going boat of the prehistoric indigenous ethnic groups who have disappeared two to three thousand years ago.Archaeological excavations of the prehistoric South China have discovered other sites with evidence of the outrigger canoes,such as the eight-thousand-year canoe from Kuahuqiao of Zhejiang Province,and Han Dynasty canoes from Lianjiang Pukou of Fujian,Huazhou of Guangdong and Qinzhou of Guangxi,etc.They could have been the prototypical outrigger canoes and the earliest seagoing boats of the indigenous peoples of South China thousands of years ago.

Abstract:Six different types of Majiang bronze drums from Hechi City, Guangxi, China were collected from the Guangxi Museum to characterize the original scheme of polychromy and materials used for the drums. The composition of all the samples were determined by using scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. All the bronze drums contain mainly Cu, Sn, Pb, and As. Qualitative analysis of the structure by X-ray powder diffraction indicates that each of the six bronze drums contains four or five phases, namely (Cu, As), Pb, Cu 3 Sn, and Cu 10 Sn 3 or Cu, Pb, As 0.2 Cu 1.8 , Cu 3 Sn, and Cu 10 Sn 3 . The Rietveld structural refinement is performed first time for the quantitative analysis of ancient bronze drums and inorganic cultural relics. This paper reports the result.

Abstract:The Indonesian Archipelago extends over 5000 km of latitude, from 95°E to 141°E, and hosts some of the world's largest active metal mines. While some fascinating ethnographic and historical sources exist, virtually nothing is known of the country's prehistoric metallurgical traditions. Given Indonesia's scale, this situation cannot be remedied in short order, but with this paper we seek to elucidate some metal production and consumption behaviours on Bali, located around 115°E, during the last centuries of the first millennium bc and the early to middle first millennium ad. The studied early Metal Age assemblage of 27 copper‐base artefacts from the sites of Pacung, Sembiran, Bangkah, Pangkung Paruk, Gilimanuk and Manikliyu includes bangle, bowl, drum, hook, mirror and ornamental typologies, and fragments thereof. Fourteen of the 27 samples were suffering from corrosion, but a strong tendency towards leaded copper alloys (21 of 27) can be distinguished, with some bronzes, a high‐tin bronze and a leaded high‐tin bronze. The high proportion of leaded artefacts mean that lead isotope data cannot be used to identify possible sources of copper, but there is good consistency with Mainland South‐East Asian Iron Age leaded alloy signatures for the bulk of the assemblage, possibly indicating the existence of long‐range (~2000–3000 km one way) exchange systems at the outset of the Island South‐East Asian Metal Age, and perhaps as far as China and India in the case of the mirror and bowl, respectively. Of particular note, the Manikliyu ‘Pejeng’ drum, a stylistically idiosyncratic type known from Bali and Java, and for which there is local production evidence, transpired to be consistent in terms of elemental composition and lead signature with Mainland ‘Dong Son’ drums. This could suggest that Pejeng drums were produced not just from metal imported from the Mainland but with melted down Mainland drums; an intriguing case of local reinterpretation of foreign elite material culture and iconography.

Abstract:Back ground and Aims: This study explores the organology and learning skills of Dongxiao Chinese folk musical instruments in Shandong Province, a traditional Chinese folk musical instrument with deep historical and cultural significance, particularly in Shandong Province. The aim is to provide a comprehensive understanding of Dongxiao music culture, ensuring its preservation and development alongside contemporary music cultures in Asia. Materials and Methods: The study is conducted through fieldwork in Heze, Shandong, China, involving data collection, identification of key informants, and systematic data collation. Observations and interviews are used as research tools to gain insights into Dongxiao materials, organology, and playing techniques. Data analysis includes quantitative and qualitative methods to identify patterns and themes related to Dongxiao. Results: The study reveals the organology of Dongxiao, highlighting materials such as bamboo, hardwood, jade, metal, and PVC, along with their advantages and disadvantages. It categorizes the instrument's components, including the mouthpiece, body, finger holes, and barrel holes, elucidating their roles in sound production. Additionally, the study explores the learning techniques for Dongxiao, emphasizing playing postures, finger hole techniques, and lip positioning. Conclusion: Dongxiao, with its rich history and cultural significance, plays a vital role in traditional Chinese music. Understanding its organology and learning techniques is essential for its preservation and promotion. Recommendations include the establishment of music education centers, digital learning platforms, collaborative performances, music festivals, and documentation efforts. Further study avenues include acoustical analysis, pedagogical approaches, regional variations, cross-cultural studies, contemporary compositions, and exploring the psychological and health benefits of Dongxiao.

'Moko' drums and gongs, ritual musical instruments and local currency from Alor Island, Southeast Indonesia: A comprehensive and verified lexical data set

Abstract:This paper provides comprehensive and systematized lists of names of 'moko' drums from Alor Island, in Southeast Indonesia. 'Moko' drums are unique cultural objects from the Alor-Pantar Archipelago and, besides their ancient function of ritual instruments used mainly for religious purposes and in public events by the indigenous peoples of the islands, they represented and still are considered a very valuable local 'currency' for trade and for specific social interactions rooted in aboriginal culture, like bride price negotiations. Despite the fact that they are extremely popular and widespread among Papuan peoples in Alor and Pantar, the origins of these drums are still relatively obscure. The native speakers, indeed, cannot explain the name 'moko' in itself, at the etymological and semantic level, and, despite the fact that they agree upon non-local origins of the instruments, they do not know where the instruments themselves were produced and from where they came to the islands. Our paper provides the readers with comprehensive lists that systematically collect the names of the drums, with the related glosses and basic additional information, from three representative Papuan languages of Alor Island, namely Abui, Sawila, and Kula. Configured as potentially indispensable tools to develop further research, these lists enhance our knowledge and understanding of the culture of the 'moko' drums in the Alor-Pantar Archipelago, at the linguistic (etymology of the names), anthropological (social value of the drums), and archeological (typology and provenance of the instruments) levels. This cataloguing operation is also part of the effort of documentation of the languages and cultures, still scarcely documented and definitely endangered, of the native peoples of the Alor-Pantar Archipelago.
New evidence of metal exchange in Southeast Asia during the Iron Age: scientific analysis of excavated bronze in Vilabouly, Laos

Abstract:This study combines various methods to investigate bronze artifacts excavated at the Thengkham East site in Vilabouly, Laos, in 2018. These excavated copper objects are consistent with other previously published copper objects from Vilabouly in terms of style, alloying ratios, and forming techniques, demonstrating that similar metallurgical traditions were indeed employed within Vilabouly. For dagger-axes with very low tin content, based on cultural connections between Southeast Asia and Yunnan, China, this study proposes the hypothesis that the dagger-axes unearthed in Vilabouly are funerary implements. The study of lead isotope ratios indicates evidence for the exchange of a multi-layered artifact between the mining/ore processing site and general consumption site at Vilabouly. This may indicate that the trading network within Vilabouly is based on intermediate products. Introducing new lead isotope ratio data for copper objects from Thailand and Cambodia, the comparative studies reinforced the widespread view that during the early Iron Age in Ban Non Wat, central Laos succeeded Thailand in supplying copper to various regions of Southeast Asia.

Intertwined maritime Silk Road and Austronesian routes: A Taiwanese archaeological perspective

Abstract:This article analyses recent archaeological work on the flow of materials and their influences on the communities in the South China Sea maritime regions, primarily from a local, Taiwanese perspective. The intertwined Austronesian Routes and maritime Silk Road acted as the primary conduit for the movement of both people and materials. Archaeological findings demonstrate intermittent interaction and cultural exchange between Taiwan and the regions around the South China Sea during the period 1,500-500 BCE. However, starting from 500 BCE, the gradual increase of glass beads, agate beads, and metal products which were made in mainland Southeast Asia and adjacent regions indicate an intensified interaction between Taiwan and Southeast Asia via the Maritime Silk Road and the Austronesian Routes. The author hypothesizes that trade diasporic craftspeople were the carriers of these exotic materials and knowledge, and that external cultural elements had a profound impact on the development of contemporary prehistoric Formosan society. This can be seen most notably in the shifting of decoration systems, the changing methods of subsistence, and technological leaps. Some of the impacts have faded into the archaeological records, but others are still traceable in the modern Indigenous society of Taiwan.

Acoustics of Karen bronze drums

Abstract:Bronze drums are important to the culture of the Karen people, who live mainly in Burma and the mountainous region between Burma and Thailand. A Karen bronze drum, which is cast in one piece except for the animal adornments, consists of an overlapping tympanum that may range from 9–30 in. in diameter and a cylinder that is slightly longer than the diameter. Bronze drums have a wide variety of ritual use, both musical and nonmusical. The sound spectrum of a drum shows a dense collection of partials out to about 3 kHz. The corresponding modes of vibration, recorded using electronic TV holography, sometimes show the strongest vibration in the tympanum and sometimes in the cylindrical shell. The sound of the drum and the manner of playing will be illustrated by videotape.
The Sa Huynh Culture and Related Cultures in Southern Vietnam and Cambodia

Abstract:Over the last decades, numerous excavations in central and southern Vietnam as at the lowland plains near the coast as in the mountainous interior allow a more detailed perspective on the origin, characteristics, development, and expansion of the Sa Huynh culture and related jar burial communities dated into the last centuries BC. Attention is also given to the pre-Funan population between the Angkor region and the Mekong Delta during the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age (end of the second millennium BC to the beginning of the first century AD). Despite accepting that the cultures around the South China Sea influenced each other by trade or people’s movement, an indigenous origin of different jar burial cultures in Vietnam is suggested. By considering the artifacts of the Iron Age Sa Huynh culture in three stages, migrations and distinct time spans of local groups are visible. For the Mekong Delta and Cambodia, the focus is oriented to funeral practices and technical innovations, especially the beginning of preindustrial salt production and local goldworking.

Abstract:As excavations have been conducted continuously in the Seomjin-Tamjin River basin since the 2010s, it has become possible to discuss the distribution, density, and chronology of Bronze Age sites throughout the region, away from research focused on the dolmen culture in a specific region. In addition, recently, with the discovery of dwellings and tombs in the Early Age and material culture corresponding to the Early-Middle Ages and the transition period of Middle-Early Iron Ages, it was possible to comprehensively examine the development of Bronze Age culture in the Seomjin-Tamjin River basin. The purpose of this paper is to organize the distribution and characteristics of the remains of the Seomjin-Tamjin River basin, and to explain the spatio-temporal development of the Bronze Age culture in this area based on the structure of dwellings and tombs, the types and shapes of Mumun pottery, and the analysis of excavated artifacts. For detailed analysis, the study area was divided into the upper, middle, and lower regions of the Seomjin River, the Boseong River Basin, and the upper and lower regions of the Tamjin River. As a result of the analysis, continuous occupation or sequential development process from early to middle period was not confirmed in the settlement and tombs in the Seomjin-Tamjin River basin. In other words, in the early period, the Misari type and Yeoksam-dong type were sporadically distributed in this area, showing a spatio-temporal disconnection. In the middle period, as material culture from various regions, such as the upper Geum River, Nakdong River basin, Yeongsan River basin, and the southern coast area, flowed into and diffused into this area, it became a transition zone where various cultural characteristics were mixed.

Abstract:Southeastern China's coastal region is considered one of the key areas for studying prehistoric human–land relationships in the Western Pacific region. This region, which is rich in records of marine civilization, provides an ideal location for recording coastal environmental evolution. In this study, the chronological framework of three borehole cores recovered from Haitan Island, South China, near the Keqiutou group of sites, was established using both optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14C) dating techniques. Various analyses, including lithologic characteristics, chroma, clay–water electric conductivity (EC), grain size and elemental geochemistry, were conducted to elaborate the sedimentary sequence and its paleoenvironmental implications. The findings suggest that (i) since the late Quaternary, the Haitan Island sedimentary sequence can be divided into three deposition stages: Old Red Sand formed during Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS3), intermittent sedimentation during the Last Glacial Maximum and coastal aeolian deposition during the Holocene. Furthermore, the study reveals that terrestrial debris was significant as a material source for Haitan Island. (ii) Due to the absence of tectonic uplift, Haitan Island has no thick marine sedimentary record during the Holocene period of high sea level. The Luyangpu coastal sand sheet can be dated to 2.78 ka, which is consistent with previous reports giving dates of 2.4 ka. Prior to the formation of the sand sheet, the sedimentary environment in the area was characterized by lagoon or marsh facies. (iii) Paleoanthropological activities were influenced by sedimentary environmental evolution and geomorphic processes, among others. The Keqiutou Culture experienced high sea levels, which created an intertidal environment near the site and facilitated fishing. However, regression at 5.7 ka led to terrestrial environments, which prompted the inhabitants to migrate. Approximately 3 ka ago, sea levels rose again, coinciding with the initiation of rice cultivation. These factors may have influenced the transition from the Neolithic to Bronze Age culture. This study reconstructs evolution of the sedimentary sequence since the late Quaternary, enhancing our understanding of past human–terrestrial relationship in the region.

Abstract:Secure environmental contexts are crucial for hominin interpretation and comparison. The discovery of a Denisovan individual and associated fauna at Tam Ngu Hao 2 (Cobra) Cave, Laos, dating back to 164-131 ka, allows for environmental comparisons between this (sub)tropical site and the Palearctic Denisovan sites of Denisova Cave (Russia) and Baishiya Karst Cave (China). Denisovans from northern latitudes foraged in a mix of forested and open landscapes, including tundra and steppe. Using stable isotope values from the Cobra Cave assemblage, we demonstrate that, despite the presence of nearby canopy forests, the Denisovan individual from Cobra Cave primarily consumed plants and/or animals from open forests and savannah. Using faunal evidence and proxy indicators of climates, results herein highlight a local expansion of rainforest at ~ 130 ka, raising questions about how Denisovans responded to this local climate change. Comparing the diet and habitat of the archaic hominin from Cobra Cave with those of early Homo sapiens from Tam Pà Ling Cave (46-43 ka), Laos, it appears that only our species was able to exploit rainforest resources.
Ham Rong Dong & Ky Lan discoveries – a new significance and opening up vast opportunities in the Northern offshore Part of Song Hong basin

Abstract:Abstract The exploration in the northern area of the Song Hong Basin, offshore Vietnam, was previously considered challenging. Most hydrocarbon discoveries had historically been made solely in Miocene inversion clastic and fractured/karstified carbonate basement and are marginal and sub-commercial discoveries. Recently, further studies and extended exploration program have made two more important discoveries. The first one is the Ham Rong Dong gas and condensate discovery in Oligocene overlying the basement high in Block 106. This is the first significant hydrocarbon discovery of the Oligocene clastic reservoir in the northern offshore area of the Song Hong Basin. The reservoir is of good quality with net sand up to 60m and porosity from 13% to 16%. The second one is the Ky Lan gas discovery in four way-dip closure within a depocenter trough in Block 107. The reservoir quality is quite good with total net sands about 100m and porosity from 14% to 16%. In addition to these two significant discoveries, the recent E well on the V Island encountered ca. 500m of a massive Oligocene lacustrine “world class” claystone source rock with TOC up to 9% and containing mainly Type I and II kerogen. All of the above discoveries are very important and opening up vast exploration opportunities in the northern offshore part of the Song Hong Basin. This talk will provide key information on the two new hydrocarbon discoveries, claystone source rock, and also the implication of these two new discoveries for further exploration.
