Abstract:The main objective of this research was to set the experimental conditions needed for the successful synthesis of a composite (PU-UBPFS) made from polyurethane (PU—polymeric matrix) and undeveloped Brazilian pine-fruit seeds (UBPFS—reinforcing fillers). PU was formed using oligomers obtained through chemical recycling of post-consumer poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) bottles, and UBPFS is a residue collected from a typical tree, Araucaria angustifolia, in the South of Brazil. The synthesis of PU-UBPFS was preceded by chemically modifying the UBPFS surface to promote improved interfacial adhesion and compatibility with the polymeric matrix. For this, the reaction time and the amount of UBPFS were analyzed by mean of a 22 factorial design and the achievement of the desired goal was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The stress-strain mechanical properties of the PU-UBPFS composite could be increased by 42.95% by taking a longer reaction time and thereby achieving greater sample homogeneity. The PU-UBPFS composite thus prepared showed high physical resistance, with a deformation of 200 mm, thermal stability up to 285 ºC and stiffness of 295.51 MPa, a value typical of ductile materials.
