Abstract:The ground state and lowest triplet-state structures of [Re(4,4'-(COOEt)(2)-2,2'-bpy)(CO)(3)py]PF(6) photosensitizer (bpy=bipyridine, py=pyridine) have been studied with density functional theory (DFT). Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) was carried out to predict the photophysical properties of the photosensitizer. The effects of the solvents were evaluated using the conductor-like polarizable continuum (CPCM) method in dichloromethane, chloroform, acetonitrile, acetone, ethanol and dimethylsulfoxide. The electronic transition energies computed with BLYP, MPWPW91, B3LYP and MPW1PW91 functionals are compared with the experimental spectra. Based on the calculated excited energies, the experimental absorption maximum is assigned as metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) and ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT) mixed transition, and the luminescence originates from the lowest triplet state that is ascribed as the mixed transition of MLCT/LLCT.

Abstract:A series of novel rhenium(I) 2,2'-bipyridyl complexes [fac-Re(4,4'-di-COOEt-bpy)-(CO)(3)(Xpy)PF6], where bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine, py is pyridine and X is 3-methyl, 3-hydroxy, or 3-amino, were synthesized, their photophysical and electrochemical properties were studied. The Re(II/I) oxidation potentials decreased as the X group becomes more electron donating from H to 3-methyl, 3-hydroxy, or 3-amino, which might be a very convenient ways for adjusting the electron transfer driving force.
Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance study of rhodium(III) corrole excited states

Abstract:Photoexcited states of three Rh(III) 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)corroles coordinated by different axial ligands; namely, triphenylphosphine P(C(6)H(5))(3) group (1), pyridine C(6)H(5)N group (2), and two pyridine groups (3) were studied by X- and Q-band time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) in frozen toluene and liquid crystal E-7. Transient mutations were utilized to identify multiplicity of the detected paramagnetic species. The spectra of 1 and 2 were assigned to triplet ((3)pipi*) states, while contributions of triplet ((3)dd and charge transfer (3)CT) and quintet ((5)dd) states were revealed in the spectrum of 3. The results are interpreted in terms of a peculiar nature of transition metal complexes with the unfilled d-shell, where close lying electronic states of different multiplicities may be mixed through configurational, spin-orbit, and vibronic coupling. From the EPR spectra, the spin-orbit coupling constant was estimated to be about 25 cm(-1). It is shown that different axial ligation of complexes shifts the relative energy of the excited states and, consequently, leads to population of different states. Plausible explanations of the effects governing unusual spectral and dynamic parameters of the photoexcited Rh corrole complexes are presented.
Chalcophilic Interactions: Rhenium-Sulfido and -Dithiolato Corroles

Abstract:The high-temperature (~180 °C) interaction of free-base meso-triarylcorroles and Re2(CO)10 followed by exposure to PCl3 and thiols (or elemental sulfur) affords rhenium-sulfido corroles in 67-76% yields. The use of shorter reaction times, lower temperatures (~130 °C), and a dithiol (e.g., ethane-1,2-dithiol) also allows the isolation of rhenium-dithiolato corroles, presumptive intermediates on the path to ReS corroles. The ReS corroles exhibit high thermal stability and two reversible oxidations and reductions in their cyclic voltammograms, with redox potentials nearly identical to those observed for analogous ReO corroles. The electrochemical HOMO-LUMO gaps of the complexes, at 2.2 eV, are consistent with ligand-centered oxidation and reduction. The UV-vis spectra of the ReS complexes, on the other hand, differ significantly from those of their ReO counterparts. Scalar-relativistic DFT calculations suggest that this difference reflects low-energy LUMO+2 and LUMO+3 levels, consisting of Re-S π-antibonding interactions; the ReO corroles, in contrast, exhibit a larger LUMO+1/LUMO+2 gap, as expected for a relatively classical Gouterman-type metalloporphyrin analogue. The high stability of ReS corroles is consistent with geochemists’ view of rhenium as a moderately chalcophilic element (i.e., one that partitions into sulfide melts) as well as with a recent quantitative analysis of thiophilicity, which indicates that rhenium’s oxophilicity and thiophilicity are pretty much evenly balanced.

Abstract:The mono-substituted corrole derivatives COOH-Cor and COOMe-Cor were obtained by Gryko methodology and characterized by microanaysis. In addition, we investigated experimental photophysical properties (absorption, emission by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence) in some solvents and TDDFT calculations. Photobiological parameters such as aggregation, photostability and reactive oxygen species generation (ROS) was conducted. In addition, we also evaluated the preliminary antimicrobial photodynamic assays (aPDT) between studied corroles and bacteria strains, by white-light conditions.

Abstract:The synthesis and properties of phosphorus(V) 5,10,15-tris(4-methoxycarbonylphenyl)corrole (1) have been investigated, and its potential utility for bioimaging applications in living cells has been explored. As would normally be anticipated for corrole complexes, the intensity of the Q(0,0) bands of 1 is greater than those of comparable phosphorus(V) tetraphenylporphyrins, but the Phi(F) values (0.25 for 1) are found to be comparable. A detailed analysis of the electronic structure of the complex was carried out by comparing electronic absorption and MCD spectral data to the results of TD-DFT calculations. The meso-aryl substituents, which enhance the lipophilicity of 1 and hence result in its localization in intracellular membranes during HeLa cell experiments, are predicted to result in a narrowing of the HOMO-LUMO gap and hence a red shift of the Q(0,0) bands toward the optical window in biological tissues.
Room-Temperature Multiple Phosphorescence from Functionalized Corannulenes: Temperature Sensing and Afterglow Organic Light-Emitting Diode

Abstract:Corannulene-derived materials have been extensively explored in energy storage and solar cells, however, are rarely documented as emitters in light-emitting sensors and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), due to low exciton utilization. Here, we report a family of multi-donor and acceptor (multi-D-A) motifs, TCzPhCor, TDMACPhCor, and TPXZPhCor, using corannulene as the acceptor and carbazole (Cz), 9,10-dihydro-9,10-dimethylacridine (DMAC), and phenoxazine (PXZ) as the donor, respectively. By decorating corannulene with different donors, multiple phosphorescence is realized. Theoretical and photophysical investigations reveal that TCzPhCor shows room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) from the lowest-lying T1 ; however, for TDMACPhCor, dual RTP originating from a higher-lying T1 (T1 H ) and a lower-lying T1 (T1 L ) can be observed, while for TPXZPhCor, T1 H -dominated RTP occurs resulting from a stabilized high-energy T1 geometry. Benefiting from the high-temperature sensitivity of TPXZPhCor, high color-resolution temperature sensing is achieved. Besides, due to degenerate S1 and T1 H states of TPXZPhCor, the first corannulene-based solution-processed afterglow OLEDs is investigated. The afterglow OLED with TPXZPhCor shows a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax ) and a luminance (Lmax ) of 3.3 % and 5167 cd m-2 , respectively, which is one of the most efficient afterglow RTP OLEDs reported to date.

Abstract:Four rhenium(I) complexes ReL1-ReL4 based on dipyrido[3,2-a:2,3-c]phenazine (L1) and derivatives L2-L4 ligands (L2: 10,13-dibromodipyrido[3,2-a:2,3-c]phenazine, L3: 10-bromo-13-carbazolyl-dipyrido[3,2-a:2,3-c]phenazine, L4: 10,13-dicarbazolyldipyrido[3,2-a:2,3-c]phenazine) were synthesized and characterized. The Re(I) complexes ReL1-ReL4 show photoluminescent emissions at 556, 582, 637 and 662nm, respectively, assigned to d (Re) (diimine) MLCT phosphorescence in CH2Cl2 solution. The carbazole containing complexes ReL3 and ReL4, as compared to ReL1, exhibit higher luminescence. These observations imply that modification of diimine rhenium(I) carbonyl complexes with carbazole moiety would lead to efficient phosphorescent properties.
Thermal equilibration between excited states or solvent effects: unveiling the origins of anomalous emissions in heteroleptic Ru(II) complexes

Abstract:In this manuscript we present a computational study on the photoluminescence properties of several heteroleptic [Ru(H)(CO)(N^N)(tpp)2]+ complexes (tpp = triphenylphosphine). A special focus is set on disentangling the temperature-dependent emissive properties. Experimentally, when cooling a solution of [Ru(H)(CO)(dmphen)(tpp)2]+ (dmphen = 5,6-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) from room to cryogenic temperature, a partial emission switch from metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3MLCT) to ligand-centered (3LC) phosphorescence is observed, resulting in dual photoluminescence. Two different origins of the anomalous emissions are possible, i.e., thermal equilibration between electronically excited states or different excited state solvent relaxation effects. Our calculations are in favor of the thermally equilibrated scenario. This computational investigation highlights the importance of controlling the temperature-dependent emissive behavior for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:The electronic structures and spectral properties of three Re(I) complexes [Re(CO)(3)XL] (X = Br, Cl; L = 1-(4-5 '-phenyl-1.3,4-oxadiazolylbenzyl)-2-pyridinylbenzoimidazole (1), 1-(4-carbazolylbutyl)-2-pyridinylbenzoimidazole (2), and 2-(1-ethyl benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridi ne (3)) were investigated theoretically. The ground and the lowest lying triplet excited states were full optimized at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ and CIS/LANL2DZ levels, respectively. TDDFT/PCM calculations have been employed to predict the absorption and emission spectra starting from the ground and excited state geometries, respectively. The lowest lying absorptions were calculated to be at 481, 493, and 486 nm for 1-3, respectively, and all have the transition configuration of HOMO -> LUMO. The lowest lying transitions can be assigned as metal/ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT/LLCT) character for 1, ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT) character for 2, and mixed MLCT/LLCT and intraligand pi-pi* charge transfer (ILCT) character for 3. The emission of 1 at 551 nm has the (MLCT)-M-3/(LLCT)-L-3 character, 2 has the (MLCT)-M-3/(LLCT)-L-3 character at 675 nm, and the 651 nm transition of 3 has the character of (MLCT)-M-3/(LLCT)-L-3/(ILCT)-I-3. Ionization potentials (IP) and electron affinities (EA) calculations show that the comparable EA and smaller IP values and the relativly balanceable charges transfer abilitie of 2 with respect to I and 3 result in the higher efficiency of OLEDs. The calculated results show that the absorption and emission transition character and device's efficiency can be changed by altering the ancillary ligands.

Abstract:The discoveries of facile syntheses of meso-aryl substituted corroles in 1999 triggered the revival of the chemistry of corroles. A variety of main group and transition metal elements were inserted into the corrole ring and some of the complexes show similar or superior properties to the related porphyrin complexes. The corrole germanium hydride showed unusual high reactivity with aldehydes, olefins and alkyl halides to form corrole germanium α-hydroxy alkyl and alkyl complexes. More importantly, the efficient photo-activation of N-H bond by TEMPO-Ge corrole complexes was observed and the mechanism was investigated based on EPR analysis. The reactivity of Sn corrole was also studied. Activation of N–H bonds with silicon and its low-valent heavier congeners typically proceeds via 2 electron pathways: i) a direct oxidative addition of the N–H bond to the low-valent metal center or ii) a metal-ligand cooperative process. Light-promoted N–H bond activation by main group element radicals has thus far rarely been encountered, but provides an attractive strategy to activate amines with lower activation energies. We observed the light-driven activation of N–H bonds by an organo-germanium corrole complex [(TPFC)Ge(TEMPO)] (TPFC = tris(pentafluorophenyl)corrole, TEMPO = (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl) involving a radical pathway to form germanium amides in high yields at room temperature.
Tailoring Intersystem Crossing in Phosphorus-Corrole through Axial Chalcogenation: A Detailed Theoretical Study

Abstract:Intersystem crossing (ISC) of visible-light absorbing metal-free corrole macrocycle can be greatly tuned by means of suitable chemical functionalization. Axially chalcogenated phosphorous-corrole (X=PC; X = O, S, Se) is expected to display large spin-orbit coupling (SOC) via heavy-atom effect and thereby much improved ISC. Excited-state deactivation in X=PCs including PC are studied using time-dependent optimally tuned range-separated hybrid combined with a polarizable continuum model with toluene dielectric for accounting of polar solvent effects. PC and all X=PCs are dynamically stable and also show favourable thermodynamic formation feasibility as confirmed from Gibbs free energy analysis. In spite of relatively smaller contribution of P and X to the frontier molecular orbitals compared to tetrapyrrolic ring, SOC is considerably improved due to heavy-atom effect. While PC shows one-order larger ISC rate of ~10 7 s -1 than fluorescence, competitive fluorescence and ISC rates of ~10 7 s -1 are found for O=PC. In contrast, both S=PC and Se=PC exhibit significantly larger ISC rates of ~10 9 s -1 and ~10 13 s -1 , respectively, with much smaller fluorescence rates of ~10 7 s -1 . Importantly, the first report of anti-Kasha's emission in metal-free corroles is predicted for O=PC with a radiative rate of ~10 9 s -1 . Further, calculated phosphorescence and ISC rates from the near-degenerate lowest excited triplets to the ground-state suggest ms to μs triplet lifetimes, signalling towards long-lived excited triplets formation. Overall, all the three X=PCs including PC could act as triplet photosensitizers and especially both S=PC and Se=PC are predicted to be highly efficient ones.

Abstract:Corroles are versatile chemically active agents in solution. Expanding their applications toward surface-supported systems requires a fundamental knowledge of corrole-surface interactions. We employed the tip of a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope as local probe to investigate at the single-molecule level the electronic and geometric properties of surface-supported free-base corrole molecules. To provide a suitable reference for other corrole-based systems on surfaces, we chose the archetypal 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)corrole [H(3)(TpFPC)] as model system, weakly adsorbed on two surfaces with different interaction strengths. We demonstrate the nondissociative adsorption of H(3)(TpFPC) on pristine Au(111) and on an intermediate organic layer that provides sufficient electronic decoupling to investigate geometric and frontier orbital electronic properties of almost undisturbed H(3)(TpFPC) molecules at the submolecular level. We identify a deviating adsorption behavior of H(3)(TpFPC) compared to structurally similar porphyrins, characterized by a chiral pair of molecule-substrate configurations.

Abstract:Triphenylmethyl‐based compounds such as rhodamines and fluoresceine representing an old and well‐known class of triphenylmethane dyes, are widely used in fluorescent labeling of bioimaging. Inspired by ultralong room temperature phosphorescence of triphenylphosphine derivatives, herein we report a methoxy substituted triarylmethanol ((4‐methoxyphenyl)diphenylmethanol, LJW‐1) exhibits ultralong room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) under ambient condition with afterglows of about 7 seconds. Its multiple C‐H···π intermolecular interactions, C‐H···O intermolecular interactions, hydrogen bond and π‐π interactions are beneficial for forming rigid environment in the aggregated state which is evidently an important factor in the appearance of excellent RTP. Different substituents on triarylmethanol result in compounds with different lifetimes varying from 7 μs to 818 ms. The substituent effects on the phosphorescence of triarylmethanol derivatives provide an efficient method for the design of organic RTP materials and may be enlightening the phosphorescence research of triarylmethanol derivatives.

Molecular Engineering of Corrole Radicals by Polycyclic Aromatic Fusion: Towards Open-Shell Near-Infrared Materials for Efficient Photothermal Therapy

Abstract:Open-shell radicals are promising near-infrared (NIR) photothermal agents (PTAs) owing to their easily accessible narrow band gaps, but their stabilization and functionalization remain challenging. Herein, highly stable π-extended nickel corrole radicals with [4n+1] π systems are synthesized and used to prepare NIR-absorbing PTAs for efficient phototheranostics. The light-harvesting ability of corrole radicals gradually improves as the number of fused benzene rings on β-pyrrolic locations increases radially, with naphthalene- and anthracene-fused radicals and their one-electron oxidized [4n] π cations exhibiting panchromatic visible-to-NIR absorption. The extremely low doublet excited states of corrole radicals promote heat generation via nonradiative decay. By encapsulating naphthocorrole radicals with amphiphilic polymer, water-soluble nanoparticles Na-NPs are produced, which exhibit outstanding photostability and high photothermal conversion efficiency of 71.8 %. In vivo anti-tumor therapy results indicate that Na-NPs enable photoacoustic imaging of tumors and act as biocompatible PTAs for tumor ablation when triggered by 808 nm laser light. The "aromatic-ring fusion" strategy for energy-gap tuning of corrole radicals opens a new platform for developing robust NIR-absorbing photothermal materials.
New Rhenium(I) Complexes with Substituted Diimine Ligands for Highly Efficient Phosphorescent Devices Fabricated by A Solution Process

Abstract:A series of new carbonyl rhenium(I) complexes chelated by a substituted 1,10-phenanthroline ligand with the general formula Re(CO)3LCl, where L = 2-(2′-methoxyphenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (L11), 2-(4′-methoxyphenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (L22) and 2-(4′-diphenylaminophenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (L33), have been systemically synthesized. The molecular structure of complex 1 was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies, showing that the complex adopts a distorted octahedral geometry. The electrochemical, photophysical, and thermal properties, as well as the electroluminescent behaviors of three rhenium(I) complexes, were investigated. The solution processable complex 1, 2 or 3 was used as a yellow emitting dopant to fabricate electrophosphorescent devices with a polymer host. The device based on complex 3 exhibits a maximum current efficiency of 12.2 cd A−1 and a peak brightness in excess of 7300 cd m−2, respectively. Even at a high luminance of 5000 cd cm−2 with current density of 81 mA cm−2, the current efficiency of this device remains as high as 6.4 cd A−1. These results represent the best values reported for electophosphorescent devices based on solution processable rhenium(I) complexes.
Organic Room Temperature Phosphorescence from BN‐Substituted Xanthene Derivatives

Abstract:Emissive organic materials are predominantly fluorescent and there is significant interest in realizing and understanding examples that defy this paradigm and exhibit phosphorescence under ambient conditions. Organic room temperature phosphorescence (ORTP) offers the long-lived excited states and bathochromically-shifted emission maxima of phosphorescence without the use of potentially toxic and expensive transition metals. Most ORTP materials rely on well-studied structural motifs that include aryl carbonyls, sulfones, and heavy main group elements. We report the unexpected ORTP of a series of heavy atom-free BN-substituted xanthene derivatives. The creation of heteroatom-rich scaffolds, combined with stabilizing C–H···F interactions in the solid-state, resulted in oxygen-tolerant heavy atom-free organic phosphorescence without relying on the use of cryogenic temperatures, polymer matrices, or host-guest interactions. The observation of ORTP in these simple systems sets a blueprint for the further development of heavy atom-free organic phosphors.

Halogen Engineering Strategy-Induced Color-Tunable Room Temperature Phosphorescence in Metal-Organic Halides

Abstract:Color-tunable room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials possess potential applications in multicolor imaging, multichannel anticounterfeiting, and information encryption. Abstract:We describe the preparation, characterization, and imaging studies of rhenium carbonyl complexes with a pyta (4-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,3-triazole) or tapy (1-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,3-triazole)-based heteroaromatic N∧N ligand and thiolate or selenoate X ligand. Abstract:Persistent room temperature phosphorescence (pRTP) has aroused increasing interests. Here we report an ortho-substituted compound in which two o-bromophenylsulfide and a carbazolyl were joined by a phenyl ring. The abundant intra- and intermolecular noncovalent interactions inhibit the non-radiative transition and make this compound prone to forming physical dimer which has a stabilized emissive triplet state. The confined space and the repulsion from lone pairs of sulphur atoms rigidize the molecular structure. The compound exhibits a long afterglow of over 2 s with a phosphorescence quantum efficiency (Φp) of 19.0% and a lifetime of over 250 ms. The photoluminescence properties under the aggregational state are also rationalized by computational calculations based on the intermolecular interactions and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) constant.
