Abstract:Largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides is native to freshwater lakes and rivers in North America and is generally considered to include two subspecies: the Florida largemouth bass and the Northern largemouth bass. The Northern largemouth bass was introduced to mainland China in 1983 and has become an important species for freshwater aquaculture. In this chapter the morphological characteristics and genetic diversity of two largemouth bass subspecies are introduced. In order to identify the two largemouth bass subspecies, the microsatellite markers and mitochondrial DNA sequence were used to establish identification methods. At last a DNA fingerprinting database was established by amplifying microsatellite DNA markers in largemouth bass from different areas to provide basic information for the preservation of germplasm resources, hybrid identification, and seed-selecting and breeding.
