Abstract:Conventional eccentrically braced frames dissipate seismic energy through plastic deformation of link beams. However, large residual deformation after strong earthquakes often makes the damaged structure necessary for costly repair. This paper proposes a self-centering eccentrically braced frame system which incorporates shape memory alloy bolts and post-tensioned high strength steel tendons to provide a self-centering response behavior with moderate energy dissipation. An analytical model which has taken into account the super-elastic constitutive of shape memory alloys and the changing contact condition at the link-beam interface is formulated to predict the cyclic load behavior of the system. The feasibility of the proposed concept is demonstrated by cyclic load analysis of a prototype self-centering eccentrically braced frame. Finite element simulations are carried out to verify the analytical model and to further investigate the effects of the configuration details of the link-to-beam connection to the cyclic performance of the self-centering EBF system.

Abstract:Compared with conventional steel link beams, which undergo unrecoverable plastic deformation during earthquake, the self-centering link beams exhibit recoverable deformation under seismic load. This paper illustrates a new concept of self-centering link beam system which uses post-tensioned composite tendons consisting of steel rods and shape memory alloy rods to provide re-centering force and energy dissipation capacity. A pseudo-static experiment was conducted to testify the feasibility of this novel self-centering system. The experimental results showed that the self-centering link beam system using composite tendons was able to re-center from the designed rotation of 8% rad with a negligible residual deformation and a medium energy dissipation capacity, and possessed an over-strength factor comparable to conventional systems. A numerical simulation on the experiment was carried out to cross-validate the experimental results. Comparison between the numerical results and experimental results showed they were generally consistent with each other.
Experimental investigations on seismic control of cable-stayed bridges using shape memory alloy self-centering dampers

Abstract:This paper presents the experimental investigations of a novel self-centering damper (SCD) for controlling seismic responses of cable-stayed bridges. The damper is fabricated employing the super-elasticity effect and energy dissipation characteristics of shape memory alloy wires. Within super-elastic range, a damping force model is derived and verified based on the constitutive model of shape memory alloy wires. One reduced-scale cable-stayed bridge model is designed to investigate its seismic control performance. Two different system configurations of the cable-stayed bridge model are considered, including the without control state and incorporating with the SCD between the tower and the deck. Seismic behavior of different cable-stayed bridge systems is then evaluated via shaking table tests under different ground excitations. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the SCD. The accelerations and the relative displacements of the tower reduce obviously due to the energy dissipation of the SCD. Relative displacements of the deck decline dramatically because of the connection of the SCD. Moreover, the strain responses also indicate the drop of the bending moment in the tower.

Abstract:Link beams in seismic resistant structures are usually designed to undergo severe plastic deformation to provide required ductility and energy dissipation on the occurrence of strong seismic events. The plastic deformation of link beams results in permanently deformed structures that are costly to repair after the earthquake. To reduce permanent deformation of link beams, a new concept of self-centering link beam using post-tensioned shape memory alloy rods to simultaneously provide re-centering force and energy dissipation capacity is proposed. It has two basic configurations and is modularized for the ease of fabrication and erection. An analytical model that is able to predict the cyclic loading behavior of the self-centering modularized link beam is presented. Based on the analytical model, parametric studies are carried out to investigate the effects of design parameters on the performance of the self-centering modularized link beam and also to show the performance range of the self-centering modularized link beams under given ranges of design parameter values. Typical examples are presented to demonstrate that the proposed self-centering link beam can be designed to exhibit performance comparable to that of conventional link beams in addition to re-centering capability. Abstract:<span>This study presents a novel hybrid self-centering system aiming to overcome critical shortcomings identified in the existing self-centering solution. Two types of hybrid brace incorporating shape memory alloy elements and integrated viscoelastic dampers are first introduced, followed by a system-level analysis on a series of prototype buildings. The results show that using viscoelastic material to reach a moderate damping ratio is highly effective in peak and residual deformation control. Floor acceleration is also effectively controlled by the hybrid solution. A parametric study is then conducted, and design recommendations are given. A probability-based residual deformation prediction model is finally proposed.</span>

Abstract:This paper aims to propose a novel self-centering beam-to-brace link with examined Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) based apparatuses to improve the seismic resilience of steel frames. Based on the past experimental data, a three-dimensional computer model of the proposed link was established to simulate the nonlinear hysteretic behavior. The results showed that the proposed link could realize the perceived advantages. A simplified Finite Element (FE) model was developed and validated via the comparison with the computer model. A 3-story and a 9-story representative building were rehabilitated with the proposed link. The Nonlinear Response History Analyses (NRHAs) were conducted on the original and rehabilitated systems to evaluate their seismic performance comparatively. To achieve a fair comparison, the original and rehabilitated systems had the proximate vibration periods and the same flexural strength under a roof drift ratio of 2 %. Compared with the original systems, the corresponding rehabilitated systems exhibited equivalent performance of transient inter-story displacement, significant advantages in eliminating residual deformation, and slight disadvantages in limiting floor acceleration. A comprehensive measure was developed and revealed the rehabilitated systems achieved superior seismic overall performance compared to the original systems.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the mechanical behaviour, seismic application in steel frame connections and steel structure of shape memory alloy (SMA) plates. This study commenced by examining the hysteretic response of SMA plates subjected to cyclic tension tests, considering two different loading paths. Subsequently, a self-centring steel frame connection equipped with SMA plates and washers (SC-PW) was examined via quasi-static cyclic loading tests, and comparatively satisfactory self-centring behaviour was observed. However, the degradation of the initial stiffness of the SC-PW due to an initial imperfection was observed. An improvement strategy was proposed to overcome the degradation of the hysteretic behaviour (e.g., initial stiffness) of the SC-PW. Disc springs with a larger stiffness and preloads were introduced to overcome the degradation of the initial stiffness of the SC-PW, and the validation was confirmed via detailed finite element (FE) analyses. To improve the computation efficiency, a simplified FE model was developed to reproduce the hysteretic responses of the connection. Based on the simplified FE model, a six-storey prototype structure, i.e., a self-centring hybrid steel frame (SCHSF), equipped with the improved connection was developed, and the structural dynamic responses were investigated via nonlinear response history analyses, where mainshock–aftershock sequences were considered. The influence of the SMA material properties on the seismic behaviour of the prototype structure was investigated.

Abstract:Traditional steel moment frames use welded beam-column connections,which are susceptible to brittle fracture and commonly have large residual deformation after the earthquakes.This paper summarizes the recent research on the structural system,generalizes characteristics of self-centering steel structures as follows: A novel steel structure system having the capacity of self-centering and energy dissipation can solve such problems effectively.The new connection uses bolted top and seat angles,and post-tensioned(PT) high-strength steel strands running along the beam,the PT strands tie the beam flanges on the column flange to resist moment and provide self-centering force.During the earthquake,the columns and beams remain elastic while the angles sustain inelastic deformations for energy dissipation.After the earthquake,the connections have zero deformation.They can be restored to the original status by simply replacing the angles.The research suggests that the novel structural system is more effective and has higher potential for engineering applications.

Abstract:This paper presents a preliminary experimental investigation of a self-centering beam-column joint reinforced with superelastic Ni-Ti SMA bars and ECC materials. As an alternative to the longitudinal bars in the beam plastic hinge, SMA is used to reduce the residual deformations and dissipate energy, whereas the ECC materials used in the critical region of the joints can improve the ductility of the structural member. Five 1/2 scale frame joints were designed and manufactured. The failure phenomenon, bearing capacity, energy dissipation capacity, displacement ductility, residual deformation, and self-centering performance of the joints were comparatively analyzed through a low cyclic loading experiment. A finite element model of SMA-ECC joints was established, and the influence of the SMA and ECC on the seismic behavior of the joints was investigated. The study results show that SMA bars can dramatically enhance their self-centering capability, enabling self-retrofitting damage. The ECC material is helpful for optimizing the development of the plastic hinge at the end of the beam and improving the ductility and energy dissipation capacity of the structure. The SMA-ECC composite materials exhibit good supplement to significantly improve the ductility, energy dissipation, and self-centering capabilities and delay the stiffness degradation of the structure under extreme events.

Abstract:A new type of self-centering precast concrete (SCPC) frame with hysteretic dampers is developed to obtain sufficient self-recovering and energy consumption characteristics. The working principle of a novel connection is presented, and seven cyclic loading tests with different parameters on three full-sized novel beam-column joints are investigated. Adequate seismic performances were experimentally observed in cyclic loading tests. Numerical simulation of the novel connection was performed using the OpenSees software. The elaborate simulation results and test results were well matched, such as the hysteretic behaviors, prestressed tendons forces, energy consumption and self-recovering characteristics. Furthermore, a prototype structure was modeled, and the elastoplastic dynamic responses at the design-basis earthquake (DBE) and the maximum considered earthquake (MCE) levels were studied. The results showed that the peak and residual interstory drifts (θmax and θr, max) achieved desirable demands. The post-tensioned strands avoided excessive yielding at the MCE level, and the novel frame had an adequate energy consumption behavior. In addition, incremental dynamic analysis and vulnerability analysis were performed. The 50-year exceedance probabilities of the Immediate occupancy (IO) and Repairable (RE) limit states taking θmax and θr, max as the evaluation indicators were also calculated, respectively. The results demonstrate that the novel frame has adequate seismic performance, greater reliability and less damage potential than the traditional self-centering precast concrete (SCPC) frame without energy dissipation devices.

Abstract:In this study, a novel self-centering high-damping rubber damper (SMA-HRD), incorporating shape memory alloy (SMA) filament ropes, was developed. Both the conventional high-damping rubber damper (HRD) and the SMA components were designed and tested, with an assessment of their mechanical properties across various loading frequencies. A finite element model of a self-centering functional steel frame equipped with this damper was established to perform seismic time-course analysis under the main aftershock sequence. The results indicated that the hysteresis curve of the HRD becomes fuller as the loading frequency increases. Similarly, the hysteresis curve of the SMA-HRD also becomes fuller with increasing loading frequency, and the resetting effect is pronounced due to the inclusion of the SMA filament rope. Displacement time-history analysis of the main aftershock sequence showed that an ordinary steel frame still had unrecoverable deformation 20 s after the mainshock, creating unfavorable initial conditions for the subsequent aftershock and exacerbating further damage to the structure. Under rare earthquake conditions, the peak and residual interstory drift of ordinary steel frames surpassed the limits set by seismic codes. The maximum interstory drift angle of self-centering nodal frames also surpassed these thresholds. However, frames equipped with SMA-HRD and SMA-HRD composite self-centering nodal frames demonstrated superior seismic performance. Notably, the SMA-HRD significantly reduced the peak interstory displacement in the self-centering nodal frames, demonstrating its potential to enhance seismic resilience.

Abstract:Driven by the demand of producing novel seismic resilient structures, this study focused on steel moment resisting frames equipped with superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) connections in the self-centring energy dissipation bays, and the emphasis was given to a direct-iterative design method for performance-based-plastic-design of the system under earthquake motions. Utilising the equivalent single-degree-of-freedom (SDF) oscillator which may reasonably quantify the dynamic responses of a multi-storey structure, an inelastic structural seismic demand model motivated by nonlinear spectral analyses was developed, and the statistic features were accounted. As the theoretical basis of the design philosophy, the seismic energy equilibrium equation of the structure was correlated with structural arrangement and earthquake motion characteristics. Then, a stepwise plastic design methodology enabling practising engineers to search for a feasible design strategy was proposed. Three prototype structures were developed following the proposed method, and finite element models of the systems were developed. The adequacy of the modelling techniques was verified by the test database, and the sufficiency of the hysteretic model of the structure was also justified. The seismic responses of the prototype structures were estimated by nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. The analysis data pool confirmed that the prototype structures were able to achieve the damage-control objective by limiting the maximum interstorey drifts below the prescribed deformation threshold, and inelastic actions were concentrated in the self-centring energy dissipation bays.

Abstract:This study demonstrates the considerable potential of the combined application of superelastic NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) bolts and brass friction energy dissipation devices for self-centering connections to effectively deal with both the large residual drift and lower energy dissipation of traditional connections after an earthquake. Cyclic tests were conducted on eight 1/2 scaled concrete-filled square steel tubular (CFSST) column-to-steel beam connections, including seven T-stub steel connections with SMA bolts and one conventional T-stub steel connection with normal high-strength bolts. The mechanical behavior of the connection was analyzed considering the effect of the pre-strain of the SMA bolt and the pretension force in the friction bolts through web friction devices (WFDs). The results showed that the SMA connection specimen exhibited recognizable double-flag-shaped hysteretic responses with excellent recentering ability and moderate energy dissipation capability, and the primary structural components remained elastic after each cyclic loading. The self-centering capacity of the SMA connection increases with an increase in the pre-strain of the SMA bolt, and the energy dissipation capacity of the SMA connection increases with an increase in the pre-tension force in the friction bolts. Moreover, the SMA self-centering connection has good shock resistance and repairability. After an earthquake, the seismic performance of the SMA connection can be quickly restored by replacing the T-stub steel.

Abstract:This paper comprehensively discusses the seismic performance of steel moment-resisting frames with hybrid-self-centring connections (SMRF-HSCC) employing energy dissipation sequences by probabilistic seismic assessment. The hysteretic model of the HSCC was first developed based on experimental results, and a simplified nonlinear-spring-based model to simulate the behaviour of the connection was proposed and verified by physical test data. A series of codified prototype structures were developed, considering the fracture behaviour of post-tensioned (PT) steel strands in the connections. The seismic performance of prototype structures was assessed in terms of nonlinear static analyses and nonlinear dynamic analyses. The results indicated that the hysteretic response of SMRF-HSCC exhibited trilinear hysteretic features with the expected energy dissipation sequences. The influence of the high-mode effects on SMRF-HSCC was mitigated with the increase in energy dissipation and post-yield stiffness of the structure. Finally, the fragility analyses of the prototype structures were further performed, and the risk assessment was also made considering a 50-year service period. The collapse probability and the exceedance probability of target residual drift over a 50-year service period of SMRF with conventional self-centring connections showing flag-shaped hysteresis were higher than that of SMRF-HSCCs. The results also confirmed that the collapse probability and exceedance probability of target residual drift over a 50-year service period of SMRF-HSCC can be adjusted by reasonably modulating the arrangement of the HSCCs.

Abstract:The multi-storey eccentrically braced steel frame is an desirable lateral resisting system due to large rigidity and excellent mechanics performance. In order to verify the seismic performance of eccentrically braced steel frame, the hysteretic properties and the energy dissipation capacity were studied by testing two model frames with different length of dissipation beams under horizontal cyclic loading. The resistance and deformation characteristics and the failure patterns of eccentrically braced steel frame were analyzed. The analysis revealed that the eccentrically braced frame has sufficient deformability for earthquake resistant design, and the yield load and the rigidity decrease with the length increase of the dissipation beams. The failure pattern of the eccentrically braced frame can be controlled in an extreme earthquake attack, with yielding of the dissipation beams first followed by lateral buckling. The damage can be limited at the ends of dissipation beams and the continuous plate of the brace, resulting in reduction of the stress concentration at the beam-column joint.
Lateral Load Behavior Analysis of a Novel Self-Centering Y-Eccentrically Braced Frames with Slip Connection Shear Link

Abstract:Reducing residual deformation of shear links and enhancing structural self-centering performance are two effective strategies to optimize the seismic resilience of Y-eccentrically braced frames. Based on the aforementioned concepts, a novel self-centering Y-eccentrically braced frame structure which composing of self-centering joints and slip connection shear link was introduced in this study. Firstly, a design methodology for the slip connection shear link and anticipated mechanical properties of the novel structure were proposed through theoretical analyses. Subsequently, finite element models were established based on previous experimental data to investigate the lateral load behavior of the novel structure by comparing it with a conventional structure. The results indicate that when possessing sufficient lateral load capacity and energy dissipation capacity, the novel structure exhibits exceptional self-centering performance. Finally, the energy dissipation and self-centering mechanism were obtained by conducting stress analysis on substructures under various seismic conditions. The analysis results indicate that the slip connection mechanism effectively mitigates relative displacement and damage to shear links, restricts frame damage, and enhances structural self-centering performance when combined with self-centering joints.

Abstract:Self-centering earthquake-resistant structures have received increased attention due to their ability to reduce post-earthquake residual deformations and, thus, repair time and cost. This stimulated the development of recentering shape memory alloy (SMA) dampers that use superelastic nitinol wires to dissipate energy and self-center the structure. However, there are still a few case studies applications on full-scale RC buildings in the literature. Moreover, general guidelines or even simplified approaches for the practical design of SMA damped braces are still lacking. This paper focuses on evaluating the effect of using self-centering shape memory alloy dampers for buckling-restrained braces applied for the seismic retrofit of a complex RC building structure. A design method originally proposed for elastoplastic dampers was implemented to size the SMA dampers to be placed on selected spans and stories of a building. The effectiveness of the design procedure was demonstrated by nonlinear time-history analyses under different sets of earthquake strong ground motions. The analysis results show that the recentering shape memory alloy bracing system is effective in limiting the maximum transient inter-story drifts and reducing the residual inter-story drifts after strong seismic events, due to its excellent recentering behavior together with its not negligible energy dissipation capacity.

Abstract:This study investigated the seismic performance of 6-, 9-, and 12-story concentrically braced steel frames utilizing shape memory alloy slip friction dampers (SMASFDFs). For comparison purposes, identical frames equipped with self-centering braces (SCBFs) and buckling-restrained braces (BRBFs) were also designed and analyzed. The seismic performance of considered frames was evaluated through nonlinear static and nonlinear time history analysis (NLTHA) under three seismic hazard levels, i.e., frequently occurred earthquakes (FOE), design basis earthquakes (DBE), and maximum considered earthquakes (MCE). Incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) was conducted to examine the seismic responses, including peak interstory drift ratios (PID), peak floor accelerations (PFA), and residual interstory drift ratios (RID), of the designed frames under varying levels of seismic intensity. Fragility curves considering single and multiple seismic responses were obtained based on the IDA results. The results show that the SMASFDFs have comparable deformation control capacity as the BRBFs while exhibiting zero RID and more uniform deformation distribution over the building height. Moreover, in most circumstances, the joint failure probability is lowest for the SMASFDFs when considering multiple seismic responses. From a seismic design perspective, current results suggest that the SMASFDFs can be designed with the same strength reduction factor ( R ) if the PID is especially concerned.

Abstract:This paper presented a feasibility study on a self-centring connection with two energy dissipation stages for use as a combined inter-module and intra-module connection in reusable modular steel buildings. The proposed connection was equipped with shape memory alloy (SMA) disc washers and friction dampers, the former for self-centring and the latter for energy-dissipation functions. The design concept of two energy dissipation stages was to achieve structural longevity and member reuse by 1) enabling rapid recovery after small and medium earthquakes, and 2) facilitating prompt repair if at all needed after large earthquakes. An analytical model was proposed, wherein each connection element was symbolised as a rotational spring. Based on the model, a design methodology to meet the two-stage performance goals was derived, where the critical story drift ratio between the two stages was expressed as a function of the properties of friction dampers and SMA disc washers. Detailed finite element simulations were used to validate the proposed design concept and the spring model and to assess the influence of the friction dampers and SMA disc washers on the hysteresis behaviour of the connection. The results demonstrated that the proposed connection would facilitate the design objectives when it could be designed based on the proposed spring model to ensure structural longevity, member reuse, and efficient recovery and repair after seismic events.

Abstract:<p>Under severe earthquakes, a significant number of unexpected plastic hinges and brittle failure were found in conventional rigid beam to column welded connections of steel frames. To improve the seismic performance of steel frames, an innovative prefabricated self-centering beam to column (SCBC) connection was proposed and experimentally validated in this paper. The SCBC connection consisted of disc springs at the bottom flange of beam and a rotation friction hinge (RFH) at the beam end. The bottom disc springs could not contact with slab systems and provided restoring moment, whereas the RFH was designed to dissipate seismic energy. Firstly, its configuration form and design methodology were introduced. Then cyclic tests of a 1/4 scale SCBC connection specimen was carried out and the responses of the SCBC connection was compared to that of the RFH. Finally, the restoring force model of the SCBC connection was established through theoretical analysis. The experimental and analytical results demonstrated full flag-shaped hysteretic curves of the SCBC connection under cyclic loadings, verifying the desirable energy dissipation capacity and reliable self-centering capability of the SCBC connection. The calculation results based on the restoring force model were in good agreement with the test results, showing that the proposed restoring force model could reasonably predict the hysteretic behavior of the SCBC connection.</p>
