Abstract:Traditionally, numerical studies on soil-culvert systems utilize two-dimensional (2D) finite element models (FEMs) to ensure minimized computational effort. 2D FEM adopts plane-strain assumptions—assumptions that miss the prevalent loading conditions in soil-culvert systems. The correct way of modeling such systems is to use full-scale three-dimensional (3D) FEMs. However, such endeavors have proven to be bulky both in computational time and memory needed to perform the analyses. In this study, the applicability of smaller-sized 3D models, to realistically represent soil-culvert systems, is scrutinized. Special types of elements, namely infinite elements, are employed to shrink full-size models by half. It was found that the use of infinite elements reduced computational time significantly while maintaining the accuracy of results and provided a more realistic time history in dynamic models.
