Abstract:Investigating the thermoregulation and ventilation processes in termite mound holds great interest, in particular for its potential implications in advancing eco-friendly building designs. In this article we discuss major results on these processes in termite mounds of varying sizes and ventilation types. Additionally, we propose the integration of X-ray tomography to gain insights into the contribution of architectural features of termite mounds to thermoregulation and ventilation. Finally, we assess the contributions of numerical flow field simulations to this research domain. Our objective is to consolidate existing knowledge, identify research gaps, and propose an interdisciplinary approach to foster our understanding of temperature regulation and gas exchange in termite mounds.

Abstract:Significance Termite nests are a remarkable example of functional self-organization that show how structure and function emerge on multiple length and time scales in ecophysiology. To understand the process by which this arises, we document the labyrinthine architecture within the subterranean nests of the African termite Apicotermes lamani and develop a simple mathematical model that relies on the physical and biological interactions between termites, pheromones, and mud in the nest. Our model explains the formation of parallel floors connected by linear and helical ramps, consistent with observations of real nests. In describing this multiagent system, we elucidate principles of physical and behavioral coupling with relevance to swarm intelligence and architectural design.

Simulation and Optimization Study on the Ventilation Performance of High-Rise Buildings Inspired by the White Termite Mound Chamber Structure

Abstract:High-rise buildings often use mechanical systems to assist ventilation to maintain the stability of their internal environments, and the energy consumption of mechanical ventilation poses a great challenge to urban environments and energy systems. The ventilation system of termite mounds with a combination of internal main and attached chambers is one of the classic examples of nature's bionic approach to maintaining a stable internal ventilation environment for large-volume structures. In this study, based on the inspiration of the internal ventilation chamber structure of bionic termite mounds, we constructed seven high-rise building chamber ventilation models based on the chamber structure of termite mounds with main chambers, main chambers plus single-attached chambers (three types), and main chambers plus double-attached chambers (three types) under natural ventilation conditions, aiming at obtaining the optimal low-energy and high-efficiency chamber ventilation model for bionic termite mounds in high-rise buildings. (1) The wind speed and wind pressure of the high-rise building with the addition of the bionic termite mound chamber structure is higher than that of the traditional chamber-free high-rise building in the sample floors, the maximal difference of the wind speed between the two models is 0.05 m/s, and the maximal difference of the wind speed of the single building is 0.14 m/s, with the maximal difference of the wind speed of the single building being 0.14 m/s; and the natural ventilation environment can be satisfied by a high-rise building with a chamber. (2) After increasing the single-attached chamber structure of the bionic termite mound, the difference in wind speed of different floors is 0.15 m/s, which is 0.10 m/s higher than that of the high-rise building model with the main chamber only. (3) Under the bionic termite mound chamber high-rise building double-attached chamber model, the maximum difference in wind speed of each floor sampling point can reach 0.19 m/s, while the wind pressure cloud map shows a stable wind environment system. (4) Two attached chambers are added at A and B of the high-rise building to form the a4 model of the chamber of the high-rise building with a double-chamber bionic termite mound. According to the results, it can be seen that the model of the nine floor sampling points of the maximum wind speed difference has six places for the highest value, and the single building wind speed difference for the minimum value of 0.10 m/s. The study aims to optimize the connectivity and ventilation performance of high-rise buildings under natural ventilation conditions and to promote the green and sustainable design of high-rise buildings.

Abstract:This study investigates the internal architecture of Asian hornet nests (AHNs) using advanced imaging techniques, such as CT scanning and X-ray radiography, to understand their construction and function. The primary objective and significance of this study centre on drawing inspiration from the creative way Asian hornets construct their nests, with a particular focus on the architecture, design, functionality, and building materials of these nests. The architectural principles governing the construction of these nests, such as the arrangement of hexagonal cells, pedicels for load bearing, and adhesive materials, serve as a source of inspiration for innovative and sustainable design practices. The pedicels in Asian hornet nests play a crucial role in transferring load and ensuring stability. Additionally, AHNs' adhesion to tree branches is essential for preventing collapse, and the pedicels provide necessary structural support. The knowledge gained from studying AHNs' internal architecture could be applied directly to the architecture and civil engineering fields to improve structure stability and durability. The microstructure analysis of the paper-like material that hornets produce to build their nests indicates a complex and heterogeneous structure, composed of various plant fragments and fibres. This unique composition creates intricate grooves and pores, which are essential for regulating temperature and humidity levels within the outer envelope of the nest. The study of Asian hornet nests' internal structure demonstrated that nature's engineering principles inspire the design of durable and resilient structures in the construction industry. Civil engineers can incorporate similar principles into their designs to enhance the structural integrity and performance of buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure.
Termite-engineered microbial communities of termite nest structures: a new dimension to the extended phenotype

Abstract:Termites are a prototypical example of the 'extended phenotype' given their ability to shape their environments by constructing complex nesting structures and cultivating fungus gardens. Such engineered structures provide termites with stable, protected habitats, and nutritious food sources, respectively. Recent studies have suggested that these termite-engineered structures harbour Actinobacteria-dominated microbial communities. In this review, we describe the composition, activities, and consequences of microbial communities associated with termite mounds, other nests, and fungus gardens. Culture-dependent and culture-independent studies indicate that these structures each harbour specialized microbial communities distinct from those in termite guts and surrounding soils. Termites select microbial communities in these structures through various means: opportunistic recruitment from surrounding soils; controlling physicochemical properties of nesting structures; excreting hydrogen, methane, and other gases as bacterial energy sources; and pretreating lignocellulose to facilitate fungal cultivation in gardens. These engineered communities potentially benefit termites by producing antimicrobial compounds, facilitating lignocellulose digestion, and enhancing energetic efficiency of the termite 'metaorganism'. Moreover, mound-associated communities have been shown to be globally significant in controlling emissions of methane and enhancing agricultural fertility. Altogether, these considerations suggest that the microbiomes selected by some animals extend much beyond their bodies, providing a new dimension to the 'extended phenotype'.
Feature-preserving synthesis of termite-mimetic spinodal nest morphology

Abstract:Termite-built topology is complex due to group interactions and environmental feedback. Being interlinked with material characteristics and related to functionality, an accurate synthesis of termite mound topology has never been achieved. We scanned inner termite mound pieces via high-resolution micro-computed tomography. A wavelet scattering transform followed by optimization extracts features that are fed into a Gaussian Random Fields (GRFs) approach to synthesize termite-mimetic spinodal topology. Compared to natural structures the GRF topology is more regular. Irregularity is related to anisotropy, indicative of directionality caused by porous network connectivity of chambers and corridors. Since GRFs are related to diffusion, we assume that deterministic behavioral traits play a significant role in the development of these local differences. We pioneer a framework to reliably mimic termite mound spinodal features. Engineering termite-inspired structures will allow to inspect aspects of termite architectures and their behavior to manufacture novel material concepts with imprinted multi-functionality.

Abstract:The soil-insect interaction has gathered significant attention in the recent years due to its contribution to bio-cementation. Termites, as a group of cellulose-eating insects, alter physical (texture) and chemical (chemical composition) properties of soil. Conversely, physico-chemical properties of soil also influence termite activities. It is vital to understand the soil-termite interaction and their influence on hydraulic properties and shear strength of soil, which are related to a series of geotechnical engineering problems such as ground water recharge, runoff, erosion and stability of slopes. In this study, an attempt has been made to review the latest developments and research gaps in our understanding of soil-termite interaction within the context of geo-environmental engineering. The hydraulic properties and shear strength of termite modified soil were discussed with respect to soil texture, density and physico-chemical composition. The incorporation of hysteresis effect of soil water characteristic curve, and spatio-temporal variations of hydraulic conductivity and shear strength of termite modified soil is proposed to be considered in geotechnical engineering design and construction. Finally, the challenges and future trends in this research area are presented. The expertise from both geotechnical engineering and entomology is needed to plan future research with an aim to promote use of termites as maintenance engineers in geotechnical infrastructure.

Abstract:Termites are key decomposers of dead plant material involved in the organic matter recycling process in warm terrestrial ecosystems. Due to their prominent role as urban pests of timber, research efforts have been directed toward biocontrol strategies aimed to use pathogens in their nest. However, one of the most fascinating aspects of termites is their defense strategies that prevent the growth of detrimental microbiological strains in their nests. One of the controlling factors is the nest allied microbiome. Understanding how allied microbial strains protect termites from pathogen load could provide us with an enhanced repertoire for fighting antimicrobial-resistant strains or mining for genes for bioremediation purposes. However, a necessary first step is to characterize these microbial communities. To gain a deeper understanding of the termite nest microbiome, we used a multi-omics approach for dissecting the nest microbiome in a wide range of termite species. These cover several feeding habits and three geographical locations on two tropical sides of the Atlantic Ocean known to host hyper-diverse communities. Our experimental approach included untargeted volatile metabolomics, targeted evaluation of volatile naphthalene, a taxonomical profile for bacteria and fungi through amplicon sequencing, and further diving into the genetic repertoire through a metagenomic sequencing approach. Naphthalene was present in species belonging to the genera Nasutitermes and Cubitermes. We investigated the apparent differences in terms of bacterial community structure and discovered that feeding habits and phylogenetic relatedness had a greater influence than geographical location. The phylogenetic relatedness among nests' hosts influences primarily bacterial communities, while diet influences fungi. Finally, our metagenomic analysis revealed that the gene content provided both soil-feeding genera with similar functional profiles, while the wood-feeding genus showed a different one. Our results indicate that the nest functional profile is largely influenced by diet and phylogenetic relatedness, irrespective of geographical location.

Abstract:In subway stations, the piston effect plays an important role in enhancing ventilation to improve subway environment and reduce energy consumption. However, it may induce negative impacts on environmental health and thermal comfort, i.e. air pollution and strong wind. Traditionally, the architecture and ventilation systems are designed separately, and normal ventilation design follows architectural layout. Actually, the architecture design can have a significant influence on the ventilation performance, e.g. airflow pattern. Therefore, this study aims to integrate the design pattern of the architecture with an appropriate ventilation system. A typical subway station of Nanjing (in China) was considered. A dynamic-mesh based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method was adopted to simulate ventilation performance in the presence of piston effect. Field measurements were conducted to validate the numerical method. New measures were proposed from the perspectives of architectural design to improve the ventilation effect, including enlarging atrium space, adding atrium vents and funnel-shaped exits, etc. The numerical results show that the optimal architectural design could provide a significant improvement towards the airflow environment and ventilation efficiency while avoiding serious air pollution. The proposed integrated-design pattern could further facilitate the creation of an 'energy-saving' and 'healthy' underground space environment.

Abstract:On the basis of analysis of ventilation requirement and CO concentration distribution character in dead-end tunneling, this paper designed the ventilation equipment layout. Furthermore, a control strategy which includes normal ventilation mode and gun smoke discharging mode is established. In view of expert experience and numerical simulation results dead-end tunneling, fuzzy control is adopted to deal with this problem. Control rules principle is described in detail. Applying direct torque speed adjustment mode, an experimental system is designed and implemented. Partial experimental results show that gun smoke emission process is fast in order to increase efficiency, while normal ventilation mode is adjustable air flow for energy conservation.

The Design of ventilation system is done in the Revit software. The design calculations are done and the layouts are drawn in the Revit software and duct sizes and centrifugal fan HPs are calculated. Abstract:Hybrid ventilation represents an interesting option both to guarantee good air quality for indoor environments and to reduce the energy consumption related to the mechanical motivation of the air. In order to join these objectives it is crucial to adopt an efficient ventilation management system. With this purpose, this paper focuses on the optimisation of control strategies for a multi-zone building equipped with a specific hybrid ventilation system, in which mechanical ventilation is provided by a forced flow system while natural ventilation is managed by properly motorized windows. An experimental platform was built in a real building. Also, a previously validated numerical model for the dynamic simulation of the environment was employed to compare three ventilation strategies in terms of the efficiency in removing carbon dioxide. The first strategy consisted of simple natural ventilation, while the remainder were hybrid strategies based on ON/OFF logic and on fuzzy logic respectively. Since the hybrid ventilation technique was found to be more efficient in maintaining good IAQ, the last step consisted in developing and testing an optimised multi-criteria hybrid ventilation strategy aimed at guaranteeing good IAQ with the minimum period of mechanical ventilation. The optimised strategy showed improved control of the CO2 concentration and a further reduction by 5% of the mechanical ventilation load.

Abstract:One of the sustainable approaches to improving indoor thermal comfort and building ventilation efficiency, particularly in developing and populated countries, is to implement the optimum passive design solutions. However, the interaction between ventilation performance, indoor thermal comfort, and passive design features of buildings is scarcely studied in the domain of airflow modeling. Therefore, this study aims at assessing the ventilation performance and indoor thermal comfort with regards to passive design strategies, specifically, opening characteristics such as the Opening to Wall ratio (OWR) and Window to Wall ratio (WWR) in a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) environment. The CFD simulations run is found pivotal for determining the spatial variation of Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) and Predicted Percentage Dissatisfied (PPD) to gauge thermal comfort and the natural ventilation performance in terms of air change rate per hour (ACH). The proposed methodology is implemented in classroom spaces of an academic building located in a warm and humid region. In the study, a field investigation is carried out to collect precise temperature and air velocity data needed to validate the resulting CFD model. The findings show that increasing OWR and WWR percentages can enhance ventilation efficiency and indoor thermal comfort.
A two-level optimisation approach for underground natural ventilation based on CFD and building energy simulations

Abstract:Natural ventilation is a historical and promising passive design for conserving building energy. However, a noticeable scarcity exists in design strategies and academic studies on underground natural ventilation. This study introduces a two-level optimisation approach for underground natural ventilation, considering form and environmental characteristics. At the initial level, computational fluid dynamics simulations were employed to quantify and visualise the momentary ventilation performances of various passive strategies. These simulations also furnished precise wind pressure coefficients. Subsequently, at the second level, this study predicted the annual energy savings of the proposed prototype by integrating an airflow network model with building energy simulations. To adapt design parameters, sensitivity analysis and multi-objective optimisation techniques were applied. These numerical models underwent validation against measured data from analogous studies. The results reveal that the 'inlet buried pipe + outlet shaft' led to a 6.9 % reduction in energy consumption for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning in underground hybrid ventilation compared to underground mechanical ventilation. Moreover, it achieved a 28.8 % decrease compared to aboveground mechanical ventilation. Optimising air temperatures following climate, soil conditions, and building characteristics is imperative, aligning with design standards. This study contributes a quantitative and visual approach to support underground natural ventilation and addresses the limitations of empirical designs, providing a foundation for future research and practical applications.

Abstract:This investigated research work and the final decisions were arrived from the specific dynamical analysis of three different new and innovate underground interchange buildings planned and executing currently at Doha and Al khor situated at Qatar is presented. A supplementary study was carried out for an identical two-tier swapping building technique and the approach and outcome have been reported in this research article. The examination of dissimilar ventilation and air-conditioning stratagems has been done initially. The prime objective is to find the efficient and effectual design to invent and so as to uphold to get an attention of pollutant contaminant and thermal temperatures under the modelled and designed values, by investing very low cost even in the operating level. The systematic CFD modelling of dissimilar stratagems was done and the numerical and simulated results are shown in this work. The same has again merged with a dynamical Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) coding to reach the optimum result. This was done with the coordination with buses circulation and with the sources of heat and disbursed pollution. The concluding optimal result succeeded is grounded on a substantial partitioning which is connecting between the island area and berth locale. The efficacy of the multifarious design strategies and probable predictions are presented in the conclusions. In order to manage a fire crisis situation, it is primary to check about the planning of the fire and flames struggling measures which comprises of automatic freshening like ventilation along with arrangements of curtains, and explain the smoke sectors which would be able to manage with a fire crisis condition. The main results accessible are temperature fields, concentration of smoke and visibility.
Spatial patterning of soil microbial communities created by fungus-farming termites

Abstract:Spatially overdispersed mounds of fungus-farming termites (Macrotermitinae) are hotspots of nutrient availability and primary productivity in tropical savannas, creating spatial heterogeneity in communities and ecosystem functions. These termites influence the local availability of nutrients in part by redistributing nutrients across the landscape, but the links between termite ecosystem engineering and the soil microbes that are the metabolic agents of nutrient cycling are little understood. We used DNA metabarcoding of soils from Odontotermes montanus mounds to examine the influence of termites on soil microbial communities in a semi-arid Kenyan savanna. We found that bacterial and fungal communities were compositionally distinct in termite-mound topsoils relative to the surrounding savanna, and that bacterial communities were more diverse on mounds. The higher microbial alpha and beta diversity associated with mounds created striking spatial patterning in microbial community composition, and boosted landscape-scale microbial richness and diversity. Selected enzyme assays revealed consistent differences in potential enzymatic activity, suggesting links between termite-induced heterogeneity in microbial community composition and the spatial distribution of ecosystem functions. We conducted a large-scale field experiment in which we attempted to simulate termites' effects on microbes by fertilizing mound-sized patches; this altered both bacterial and fungal communities, but in a different way than natural mounds. Elevated levels of inorganic nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium may help to explain the distinctive fungal communities in termite-mound soils, but cannot account for the distinctive bacterial communities associated with mounds.
Mound architecture and season affect concentrations of CO2, CH4 and N2O in nests of African fungus‐growing termites

Abstract:Termite mounds harboured several times higher levels of CO2, CH4 and N2O compared with their atmospheric concentrations implying that mounds are important natural sources of the three greenhouse gases (GHGs). Mounds with open and closed ventilation, built by two different Macrotermes species, had systematically distinct CO2 levels, whereas CH4 and N2O concentrations were linked to the mound size and season. These interactions highlight the importance of considering mound architectural variance and seasonal differences when assessing the role of termites in GHG budgets. Termites are a significant natural source of greenhouse gases (GHGs), but quantifying emissions especially from large termite mounds is problematic as they rarely fit in measurement chambers. Predicting fluxes based on internal and atmospheric concentrations could provide an indirect way to assess mound emissions, but developing such models necessitates better understanding of the concentration levels and their variance. We used gas chromatography to measure carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) concentrations within nests of two co‐occurring species of fungus‐growing termites in both dry and wet seasons in Kenya, with termite Macrotermes michaelseni building mounds with a closed and Macrotermes subhyalinus with an open ventilation system. Gas concentrations were 3–100 times higher in mounds than the global averages in atmosphere, implying that termite mounds are sources of all three GHGs. Carbon dioxide concentrations were higher in closed than in open mounds. Methane concentrations remained constant in open mounds, whereas closed mounds exhibited considerable variation between nests and across seasons. Concentrations of both CH4 and N2O correlated positively with mound volume during the wet season, whereas interactions with mound size were not observed in CO2 concentrations or during the driest sampling period. These findings underline that among fungus‐growing termites, mound size, ventilation type and precipitation affect nest gas concentrations and with this likely the magnitude of mound GHG emissions. Potential reasons behind the observed relationships are discussed, including differences in population size, biomass of fungus gardens and CH4 oxidation.

Abstract:Wood actively equalises its moisture content in relation to its surrounding environment. Technical applications that can harness this characteristic can have a great impact in the improvement of indoor hygrometric comfort. So far few applications have made use of this unique property. The natural hygroscopic intelligence of wood can lead to the development of a new technology capable of ensuring improved indoor comfort. The natural material can thus be engineered by creating responsive composites made from wood waste and transformed through 4D printing. The biomimetic actuators studied in this paper are aimed at linking the transformation of form into environmental control functionality applied to building comfort in adaptive and passive solutions.

Abstract:This book has been written as a reference and text for engineers, researchers, teachers and students who have an interest in the planning and control of the environment in underground openings. While directed primarily to underground mining operations, the design procedures are also applicable to other complex developments of subsurface space such as nuclear waste repositories, commercial accommodation or vehicular networks. The book will, therefore, be useful for mining, civil, mechanical, and heating, ventilating and air-conditioning engineers involved in such enterprises. The chapters on airborne pollutants highlight means of measurement and control as well as physiological reaction. These topics will be of particular interest to industrial hygienists and students of industrial medicine. One of the first technical applications of digital computers in the world's mining industries was for ventilation network analysis. This occurred during the early 1960s. However, it was not until low cost but powerful personal computers proliferated in engineering offices during the 1980s that the full impact of the computer revolution was realized in the day-to-day work of most mine ventilation engineers. This book reflects the changes in approach and design procedures that have been brought about by that revolution. While the book is organized into six parts, it encompasses three broad areas.

Abstract:In buildings with good-quality thermal insulation of external partitions, the main component of the building's heat balance is the heat demand for ventilation. The reduction of this energy demand cannot be achieved at the expense of thermal comfort of the occupants and indoor air quality. The aim of this article is to analyze the impact of various ventilation strategy (natural and mechanical) on heating demand, thermal comfort, and CO2 concentration in a single-family house located in Poland. The benefits of using fans integrated with the earth tube were tested. The study was based on the numerical energy simulation of a multi-zone building model for the entire calendar year. Contam, EnergyPlus, and Python programs were used to perform calculations. The thermal model was validated on the results of temperature measurements in the building. To obtain the best solutions, the parameters of the systems considered have been optimized with the use of genetic algorithms. Various optimal parameters of the earth tube (diameter, length, and foundation depth) were obtained during this research. The highest number of thermal discomfort hours was obtained in the naturally ventilated building with automatic window opening. This system supplied to the rooms a large amount of cool outdoor air in winter and warm air in summer, causing instantaneous rapid fluctuations in indoor temperature. Supplementing the mechanical ventilation control system with CO2 concentration sensors resulted in a much higher amount of ventilation air supplied to the rooms compared to systems controlled only by temperature sensors, resulting in an increase in heat demand.
