Abstract:This ethnography examines two Syrian refugee women’s experiences of waiting while living in the Turkish–Syrian border town of Antep. Since the beginning of the Syrian war in 2011, 3.5 million Syrians have left their homes to seek refuge in Turkey. With the 2014 Temporary Protection Regulation granting Syrians temporary residence and limited access to social services, the Turkish state developed state of exception strategies aimed at minimising the impact of incoming refugees. Living within the temporality of war and refugeehood, Syrian refugees are subjected to various forms of waiting that are constitutive of temporal dispositions and strategies with which they negotiate the vicissitudes of the war, the precariousness of refugee life in Turkey, their emotionally and politically charged sojourn in the borderlands close to their home, and their future‐oriented expectation of war’s end. Engaging with the anthropological concepts of waiting, patience and migration, we examine how two Syrian women refugees navigate the uncertain temporality of their lives. To cope with the Turkish state’s arbitrary exceptional policies that constantly pause and interrupt the flow of daily life, they replace waiting for the demands of the present with forms of patience that keep their future expectation of return to Syria alive. Cette ethnographie examine les expériences d’attente de deux femmes réfugiées syriennes alors qu’elles vivent dans la ville frontalière turco‐syrienne d’Antep. Depuis le début de la guerre en Syrie en 2011, 3,5 millions de Syriens ont quitté leur foyer pour se réfugier en Turquie. Avec le règlement de 2014 sur la protection temporaire accordant aux Syriens une résidence temporaire et un accès limité aux services sociaux, l’État turc a développé des stratégies « d’état d’exception » visant à minimiser l’impact des réfugiés entrants. Vivant dans la temporalité de la guerre et du statut de réfugié, les réfugiés syriens sont soumis à diverses formes d’attente. Cellesci sont constitutives des dispositions et stratégies temporelles avec lesquelles ils négocient les vicissitudes de la guerre, la précarité de la vie de réfugié en Turquie, leur séjour émotionnellement et politiquement chargé dans les zones frontalières proches de chez eux, et leur attente orientée vers un avenir où la guerre sera terminée. En s’appuyant sur les concepts anthropologiques d’attente, de patience et de migration, nous examinons comment deux réfugiées syriennes naviguent dans la temporalité incertaine de leur vie. Pour faire face aux politiques d’exception arbitraires de l’État turc qui interrompent constamment le flux de la vie quotidienne, elles remplacent l’attente des exigences du présent par des formes de patience qui maintiennent vivante leur attente future de retour en Syrie.
