Abstract:A kinetic model is developed with the goal of understanding and predicting the morphology evolution of nonocrystals in nonequilibrium growth conditions. The model is based on the assumption that under such conditions, different crystal planes have different kinetic parameters. This model focuses on the morphology-developing stage and is successfully related to the nucleation process and other crystal evolution mechanisms. It is believed to be a universal model and is applied to discuss the morphology evolution of CdSe nanocrystals, including the aspect ratio, injection I schemes, ligands effect and morphology distribution.
Kinetically Trapped Nanocrystals with Symmetry-Preserving Shapes

Abstract:The shape of nanocrystals is crucial in determining their surface area, reactivity, optical properties, mechanical strength, and self-assembly behavior. Traditionally, shape control has been achieved through empirical methods, highlighting the need for a more refined theoretical framework. A comprehensive model should account for the kinetic factors at distinct stages of the shape-formation process to identify the key determinants of nanocrystal morphology. By modulating kinetics at terraces, ledges, and kinks, we reveal that the primary factors are the adatom nucleation energies and the geometry of growth islands. Transient sites dominate the growth process, leading to kinetically trapped, metastable shapes. We illustrate these concepts with face-centered cubic nanocrystals, demonstrating diverse shape evolutions, including surface roughening and the preservation of crystal symmetry in cubes, octahedra, rhombic dodecahedra, and their truncated variants. This study reveals the mechanisms driving the formation of cubic nanocrystal shapes and offers guidance for their precise synthesis.

Abstract:A continuum density field formulation with particle-scale resolution is constructed to simultaneously incorporate the orientation dependence of interparticle interactions and the rotational invariance of the system, a fundamental but challenging issue in modeling the structure and dynamics of a broad range of material systems across variable scales. This generalized phase field crystal-type approach is based upon the complete expansion of particle direct correlation functions and the concept of isotropic tensors. Through applications to the modeling of various two- and three-dimensional crystalline structures, our study demonstrates the capability of bond-angle control in this continuum field theory and its effects on the emergence of ordered phases, and provides a systematic way of performing tunable angle analyses for crystalline micro structures.
Crystal Nucleation in Al-Ni Alloys: an Unsupervised Chemical and Topological Learning Approach

Abstract:Crystallization represents a fundamental process engendering solidification of a material and determines its microstructure. Driven by complex phenomena at the atomic scale, its understanding for alloys still remains elusive. The present work proposes a large scale molecular dynamics simulation study of the homogeneous crystal nucleation pathways of prototypical undercooled Al-Ni binary alloys. An unsupervised topological learning analysis shows that the nucleation sets in first from a chemical ordering, followed by a bond-orientational ordering of the underlying crystal phase. Our results indicate also a different polymorph selection that depends on composition. While the nucleation pathway of Al50 Ni50 displays a single step with the emergence of B2 short-range order, a step-wise nucleation toward the L12 phase is seen for Al25 Ni75 . The influence of the nucleation of pure Al and Ni counterparts is further discussed.

Abstract:Crystallization under geometrical confinement is of fundamental importance in condensed matter physics, biophysics and material science. Even the influence of the simplest geometry, a sphere, on crystallization remains far from well understood, thereby making morphology control of the final superstructures challenging. Here, we employ charged colloids encapsulated in an emulsion droplet as a model system to access the crystallization kinetics at the single-particle level. We find rapid formation of 'skin' layers with an icosahedral arrangement of defects under the geometrical frustration effect, followed by interior ordering and slow ripening. The final morphologies are determined by dynamical interplay between the system-independent skin layer formation and the system-dependent structural transformation towards the most stable solid far from the surface. We reveal the crucial role of kinetics in morphological selection under a geometrical constraint, besides the thermodynamics, which may shed new light on the structural design of nanoscale crystals.

Visualizing kinetic pathways of homogeneous nucleation in colloidal crystallization

Abstract:When a system undergoes a transition from a liquid to a solid phase, it passes through multiple intermediate structures before reaching the final state. However, our knowledge on the exact pathways of this process is limited, mainly owing to the difficulty of realizing direct observations. Here, we experimentally study the evolution of symmetry and density for various colloidal systems during liquid-to-solid phase transitions, and visualize kinetic pathways with single-particle resolution. We observe the formation of relatively ordered precursor structures with different symmetries, which then convert into metastable solids. During this conversion, two major cross-symmetry pathways always occur, regardless of the final state and the interaction potential. In addition, we find a broad decoupling of density variation and symmetry development, and discover that nucleation rarely starts from the densest regions. These findings hold for all of our samples, suggesting the possibility of finding a unified picture for the complex crystallization kinetics in colloidal systems. Assemblies of colloidal particles provide a micrometre-scale analogue of atomic and molecular liquids and solids. Now, real-time visualization of the liquid-solid transition in systems of spherical colloids reveals complex pathways involving precursors of hexagonal close-packed, body-centred cubic and face-centred cubic symmetry.

Abstract:Body-centered-cubic–face-centered-cubic (bcc–fcc) multi-metallic nanoparticles (NPs) associating a single-crystal core (Fe, FeCo alloys, etc.) with a polycrystalline noble metal shell (Au, AuAg alloys, etc.) are perfectly symmetrical or more irregular, even dramatically dissymmetrical, yet presenting a good crystalline organization. Here, a combination of experimental analysis and theoretical symmetry analysis is proposed, in order to provide a unified description of the observed morphologies (Fe–Au and Fe–AuAg systems), whatever their symmetry, and predict some morphology variability in a population of NPs. First, the central role of the crystal lattice accommodation is comprehensively analyzed from the experimental Fe–AuAg system. The two possible bcc–fcc epitaxial relationships generate a core–shell interface in the shape of a truncated rhombic dodecahedron. This results in two different types of grains in the shell, which are elastically accommodated between them by an equal distribution of twins and low-angle grain boundaries, however, at the cost of internal stresses. At the same time, symmetry breaking results from two possible growth variants originating from the Nishiyama–Wasserman epitaxial relationships. The shell grains fit together in a nanopuzzle-like organization, resulting in a large number of possible arrangements distributed in 13 different point groups of symmetry, all of lower order than the core symmetry (highest order of cubic symmetry). If the variants are randomly distributed, the probability for the NP to be asymmetric (group 1) is 80%. The dissymmetrical development of the NPs is then discussed. Extending this approach to other core shapes succeeds in predicting dissymmetrical or dramatically off-centered morphologies experimentally observed in Fe–Au NPs.

Abstract:Although distorted crystals are ubiquitous in nature, the artificial creation of distorted nanoscale crystals with tailored morphology and structure are greatly challenging, since the formation of ideal nanocrystals requires extremely rigorous condition. We herein demonstrate a kinetics-induced orientational morphological evolution of distorted Pd 20 Sb 7 rhombohedral nanocrystals (RNCs) by altering the temperature for growth. Detailed characterizations and experiments show that the retarded kinetics leads to the morphological evolution from regular rhombohedron to distorted rhombohedron, while the crystalline structure is kept identical by exposing six {211} facets. Moreover, the morphological evolution of distorted Pd 20 Sb 7 RNCs is further validated by the similar normalized activity towards formic oxidation reaction based on the surface Pd atoms. This work advances the precisely controlled synthesis of Pd-based nanocrystals with tailored morphologies, which may attract great interests in various fields including chemistry, materials science, catalysis and beyond.

Abstract:Manipulating symmetry environments of metal ions to control functional properties is a fundamental concept of chemistry. For example, lattice strain enables control of symmetry in solids through a change in the nuclear positions surrounding a metal centre. Light-matter interactions can also induce strain but providing dynamic symmetry control is restricted to specific materials under intense laser illumination. Here, we show how effective chemical symmetry can be tuned by creating a symmetry-breaking rotational bulk polarisation in the electronic charge distribution surrounding a metal centre, which we term a meta-crystal field. The effect arises from an interface-mediated transfer of optical spin from a chiral light beam to produce an electronic torque that replicates the effect of strain created by high pressures. Since the phenomenon does not rely on a physical rearrangement of nuclear positions, material constraints are lifted, thus providing a generic and fully reversible method of manipulating effective symmetry in solids.

Abstract:As a fundamental concept of all crystals, space groups are partitioned into symmorphic groups and nonsymmorphic groups. Each nonsymmorphic group contains glide reflections or screw rotations with fractional lattice translations, which are absent in symmorphic groups. Although nonsymmorphic groups ubiquitously exist on real-space lattices, on the reciprocal lattices in momentum space, the ordinary theory only allows symmorphic groups. In this work, we develop a novel theory for momentum-space nonsymmorphic space groups ( k -NSGs), utilizing the projective representations of space groups. The theory is quite general: Given any k -NSGs in any dimensions, it can identify the real-space symmorphic space groups ( r -SSGs) and construct the corresponding projective representation of the r -SSG that leads to the k -NSG. To demonstrate the broad applicability of our theory, we show these projective representations and therefore all k -NSGs can be realized by gauge fluxes over real-space lattices. Predicting nanocrystal morphology governed by interfacial strain

Abstract:The shape dependence for the technologically important nickel oxide (NiO) nanocrystals on (001) strontium titanate substrates is investigated under the generalized Wulff-Kaichew (GWK) theorem framework. It is found that the shape of the NiO nanocrystals is primarily governed by the existence (or absence) of interfacial strain. Nanocrystals that have a fully pseudomorphic interface with the substrate (i.e. the epitaxial strain is not relaxed) form an embedded smooth ball-crown morphology with {001}, {011}, {111} and high-index {113} exposed facets with a negative Wulff point. On the other hand, when the interfacial strain is relaxed by misfit dislocations, the nanocrystals take on a truncated pyramidal shape, bounded by {111} faces and a {001} flat top, with a positive Wulff point. Our quantitative model is able to predict both experimentally observed shapes and sizes with good accuracy. Given the increasing demand for hetero-epitaxial nanocrystals in various physio-chemical and electro-chemical functional devices, these results lay the important groundwork in exploiting the GWK theorem as a general analytical approach to explain hetero-epitaxial nanocrystal growth on oxide substrates governed by interface strain.

Abstract:Anisotropy is a significant and prevalent characteristic of materials, conferring orientation-dependent properties, meaning that the creation of original symmetry enables key functionality that is not found in nature. Even with the advancements in atomic machining, synthesis of separated symmetry in different directions within a single structure remains an extraordinary challenge. Here, we successfully fabricate NiS ultrafine nanorods with separated symmetry along two directions. The atomic structure of the nanorod exhibits rotational symmetry in the radial direction, while its axial direction is characterized by divergent translational symmetry, surpassing the conventional crystalline structures known to date. It does not fit the traditional description of the space group and the point group in three dimensions, so we define it as a new structure in which translational symmetry and rotational symmetry are separated. Further corroborating the atomic symmetric separation in the electronic structure, we observed the combination of stripe and vortex magnetic domains in a single nanorod with different directions, in accordance with the atomic structure. The manipulation of nanostructure at the atomic level introduces a novel approach to regulate new properties finely, leading to the proposal of new nanotechnology mechanisms.

Abstract:Nanocrystals of group 5 tetradymites M2X3 (where M = Bi and Sb, X = Se and Te) are of high technological relevance in modern topological nanoelectronics. However, there is a current lack of a systematic understanding to predict the preferred nanocrystal morphology in experiments where commonly-used equilibrium thermodynamic models appear to fail. In this work, using first-principles DFT calculations with a rationally-extended ab initio atomistic thermodynamics approach coupled to implicit solvation models and Gibbs-Wulff shape constructions, we demonstrate that this absence of predictive power stems from the limitation of equilibrium thermodynamics. By re-tracing and carefully addressing with a more realistic chemical potential definition, we illustrate this shortcoming can be overcome and afford a more rational route to size-engineer and shape-design highly-functional group 5 tetradymite nanoparticles for targeted applications.

Abstract:We investigate the critical nucleus and equilibrium morphologies during precipitation of a second-phase particle in a solid. We show that a combination of diffuse-interface description and a constrained string method is able to predict both the critical nucleus and equilibrium precipitate morphologies simultaneously without a priori assumptions. Using the cubic to cubic transformation as an example, it is demonstrated that the maximum composition within a critical nucleus can be either higher or lower than that of equilibrium precipitate while the morphology of an equilibrium precipitate may exhibit lower symmetry than the critical nucleus resulted from elastic interactions.

Abstract:Understanding classical and nonclassical mechanisms of crystal nucleation and growth at the atomic scale is of great interest to scientists in many disciplines. However, fulfilling direct atomic-scale observation still poses a significant challenge. Here, by taking a thin amorphous bismuth (Bi) metal nanosheet as a model system, direct atomic resolution of the crystal nucleation and growth initiated from an amorphous state of Bi metal under electron beam inside an aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope is provided. It is shown that the crystal nucleation and growth in the phase transformation of Bi metal from amorphous to crystalline structure takes place via the particle-mediated nonclassical mechanism instead of the classical atom-mediated mechanism. The dimension of the smaller particles in two contacted nanoparticles and their mutual orientation relationship are critical to governing several coalescence pathways: total rearrangement pathway, grain boundary migration-dominated pathway, and surface migration-dominated pathway. Sequential strain analyses imply that migration of the grain boundary is driven by the strain difference in two Bi nanocrystals and the coalescence of nanocrystals is a defect reduction process. The findings may provide useful information to clarify the nanocrystal growth mechanisms of other materials on the atomic scale.

Abstract:Twinning frequently occurs in nanocrystals during various thermal, chemical, or mechanical processes. However, the nucleation and propagation mechanisms of twinning in nanocrystals remain poorly understood. Through in situ atomic resolution transmission electron microscopy observation at millisecond temporal resolution, we show the twinning in Pb individual nanocrystals via a double-layer swap motion where two adjacent atomic layers shift relative to one another. The swap motion results in twin nucleation, and it also serves as a basic unit of movement for twin propagation. Our calculations reveal that the swap motion is a phonon eigenmode of the face-centered cubic crystal structure of Pb, and it is enhanced by the quantum size effect of nanocrystals.
Anisotropic Surface Effects on the Formation of Chiral Morphologies of Nanomaterials

Abstract:Nanomaterials with chiral morphologies hold promise for a wide diversity of technologically important applications in such fields as micro/nano-electromechanical systems and medical engineering. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the formation of chiral morphologies of natural and synthesized materials remains an issue of crucial significance. In this study, a refined Kirchhoff rod model taking into account anisotropic surface effects is employed to describe quasi-one-dimensional nanomaterials with complicated spatial morphologies. It is shown that anisotropic surface stresses can induce the formation of rich morphologies of nanomaterials. A general shape equation of nanowires is derived by the variational method of energy. Thereby, the effects of anisotropic surface properties, bulk elastic properties and cross-sectional sizes on the chiral morphologies of nanomaterials are quantitatively investigated, and the conditions for the formation of binormal nanohelices are given. The physical mechanism addressed in this study is verified by our recent experiments on tuning the twisting chirality of polymer lamellae via surface treatments. Our analysis suggests that one can design and adjust the morphology of synthesized nanohelices by tailoring or functionalizing their surfaces during fabrication. This study is also helpful in interpreting the formation of such artificial and biological chiral materials as the flagella of bacterial and self-assembled helical ribbons.
