Abstract:Among various solid-state electrolytes (SSEs), the garnet type is currently the most promising one to realize Li metal-based batteries with a high energy density and improved safety. However, the huge interfacial resistance, resulting from the poor interface between the Li metal and the pellet, impedes its practical applications in Li metal-based batteries. In this work, we report a facile yet effective methodology to address the issue. The garnet pellet is modified by a thin perhydropolysilazane (PHPS) layer simply via spin coating, which then spontaneously converts into silica by reacting with water vapor and oxygen in air. After lithiation, this layer not only functions as a fast Li+ conductor but also dramatically improves the contact between lithium metal and garnet. As a result, the interfacial resistance is substantially reduced from 1046 to 49 Omega cm(2), and a symmetric lithium cell can achieve an ultralow overpotential and stable plating/stripping cyclability without lithium dendrite growth. Furthermore, a full Li/LiFePO4 battery with the silica modified garnet demonstrates a remarkably higher discharge capacity (>150 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C), Coulombic efficiency (>99%), and cycling stability (>50 cycles) compared with its pristine counterpart.

Abstract:Garnet structured electrolytes are an exceptional candidate to substitute for organic liquid electrolytes owing to its high ionic conductivity and safety.[1] One of the main issues preventing the commercialization of this electrolyte is limited lithium plating capacity and lithium dendrite shorting.[2] To address this, we invented new single-phase mixed ion electron conducting (MIEC) garnet with comparable lithium-ion and electron conductivity at room temperature. We demonstrate that in a trilayer architecture, with a porous MIEC framework supporting a thin dense garnet solid electrolyte, the critical current density can be as high as 100 mA/cm 2 , with no dendrite-induced shorting at room temperature and without any stack pressure. The single-phase MIEC conductor spreads the potential uniformly across the material surface preventing dendrite propagation through the dense garnet solid electrolyte layer. Additionally, high lithium stripping capacity and impressive cycling stability were observed at commercial level current densities of well over 10 mA/cm 2 . Abstract:Enhanced Li/SSE interfacial contact is realized by "surface microstructure optimization". It is revealed that the wettability with lithium metal and current focusing at Li/SSE interface are closely related to the surface microstructure of the solid‐state electrolyte (SSE), which directly affects the current distribution at the interface, thus affecting the critical current density and cycle stability of the battery. Poor interfacial contacts of Li mental/solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) cause high impedance and induce lithium dendrite growth, which hinders the practical viability of solid‐state batteries (SSBs). Optimizing the surface chemistry of SSEs has been widely adopted for improving the Li/SSE interfacial contact. Their surface's microstructure, another critical factor influencing the actual performance of SSBs, however, has seldom been paid attention to; and the corresponding mechanism remains unclear. Addressing this issue, the authors herein propose a "surface microstructure optimization" strategy that can significantly enhance the Li/SSE interfacial contact, and in the meantime, quantify the correlations between SSB's performance and SSE's surface roughness regarding the interfacial resistance, current focusing, critical current density (CCD), and lithium deposition. Based on these fundamental understandings, a low‐surface‐roughness SSE is developed, which shows extremely small interfacial impedance (1.7 Ω cm2) and ultra‐long stable cycling life (4500 h at 0.2 mA cm−2). This work not only comprehensively demonstrates the fundamental relationship between the surface microstructure of SSEs and their battery performance but also presents a new insight into the modulation of surface kinetics of ceramic SSEs toward achieving dendrite‐free SSBs.

Abstract:Solid garnet electrolytes are promising solid-state electrolytes because of their favorable ionic conductivity and high stability against Li metal anodes. However, their special surface chemistry greatly affects the practical applications whether in the form of garnet ceramic electrolytes (GCEs) or polymer/garnet electrolytes (PGEs). Even though large-scale production of garnet in an ambient atmosphere is possible, the passivated surface due to air exposure can lead to poor interfacial properties of GCEs with electrodes and low ionic conductivities of PGEs. Understanding the effects of air exposure on garnet structure stability, ion mobility, and interfacial configuration is crucial for better applications of solid garnet electrolytes. In this Perspective, we comprehensively recapitulate the reaction mechanisms and influencing factors of air-induced contaminations. Various surface engineering strategies tailoring garnet particles and/or pellets are reviewed. This Perspective provides insightful guidelines for better storage of garnet electrolytes and construction of solid garnet batteries with enhanced electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Abstract Surface and interface play critical roles in energy storage devices, calling for operando characterization techniques to probe the electrified surfaces/interfaces. In this work, surface science methodology, including electron spectroscopy and scanning probe microscopy, has been successfully applied to visualize electrochemical processes at operating electrode surfaces in an Al/graphite model battery. Intercalation of anions together with cations is directly observed in the surface region of a graphite electrode with tens of nanometers thickness, the concentration of which is one order higher than that in bulk. An intercalation pseudocapacitance mechanism and a double specific capacity in the electrode surface region are expected based on the super-dense intercalants and anion/cation co-intercalation, which are in sharp contrast to the battery-like mechanism in the electrode bulk. The distinct electrochemical mechanism at the electrode surface is verified by performance tests of real battery devices, showing that a surface-dominant, nanometer-thick graphite cathode outperforms a bulk-dominant, micrometer-thick graphite cathode. Our findings highlight the important surface effect of working electrodes in charge storage systems.

Abstract:The in situ electrical conductivity of hydrous garnet samples (Py20Alm76Grs4–Py73Alm14Grs13) was determined at pressures of 1.0–4.0 GPa and temperatures of 873–1273 K in the YJ-3000t apparatus using a Solartron-1260 impedance/gain-phase analyzer for various chemical compositions and oxygen fugacities. The oxygen fugacity was controlled by five solid-state oxygen buffers (Fe2O3 + Fe3O4, Ni + NiO, Fe + Fe3O4, Fe + FeO, and Mo + MoO2). Experimental results indicate that within a frequency range from 10−2 to 106 Hz, electrical conductivity is strongly dependent on signal frequency. Electrical conductivity shows an Arrhenius increase with temperature. At 2.0 GPa, the electrical conductivity of anhydrous garnet single crystals with various chemical compositions (Py20Alm76Grs4, Py30Alm67Grs3, Py56Alm43Grs1, and Py73Alm14Grs13) decreases with increasing pyrope component (Py). With increasing oxygen fugacity, the electrical conductivity of dry Py73Alm14Grs13 garnet single crystal shows an increase, whereas that of a hydrous sample with 465 ppm water shows a decrease, both following a power law (exponents of 0.061 and −0.071, respectively). With increasing pressure, the electrical conductivity of this hydrous garnet increases, along with the pre-exponential factors, and the activation energy and activation volume of hydrous samples are 0.7731 ± 0.0041 eV and −1.4 ± 0.15 cm3/mol, respectively. The results show that small hopping polarons \( \left( {{\text{Fe}}_{\text{Mg}}^{ \cdot } } \right) \) and protons (\( {\text{H}}^{ \cdot } \)) are the dominant conduction mechanisms for dry and wet garnet single crystals, respectively. Based on these results and the effective medium theory, we established the electrical conductivity of an eclogite model with different mineral contents at high temperatures and high pressures, thereby providing constraints on the inversion of field magnetotelluric sounding results in future studies.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium batteries hold great promise for next-generation energy storage systems. However, the formation of lithium filaments within the solid electrolyte remains a critical challenge. In this study, we investigate the crucial role of morphology in determining the resistance of garnet-type electrolytes to lithium filaments. By proposing a new test method, namely, cyclic linear sweep voltammetry, we can effectively evaluate the electrolyte resistance against lithium filaments. Our findings reveal a strong correlation between the microscopic morphology of the solid electrolyte and its resistance to lithium filaments. Samples with reduced pores and multiple grain boundaries demonstrate remarkable performance, achieving a critical current density of up to 3.2 mA cm-2 and excellent long-term cycling stability. Kelvin probe force microscopy and finite element method simulation results shed light on the impact of grain boundaries and electrolyte pores on lithium-ion transport and filament propagation. To inhibit lithium penetration, minimizing pores and achieving a uniform morphology with small grains and plenty of grain boundaries are essential.
Effect of H+ Exchange & Surface Impurities on Bulk & Interfacial Electrochemistry of Garnet Solid Electrolytes

Abstract:Contact loss and current constriction pose significant challenges at the Li metal interface of solid-state batteries. For garnet-structured Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO), these effects are amplified by Li+/H+ exchange and surface contamination reactions, which lead to conductivity losses and poor Li wetting. In this study, we utilize a variety of surface treatment processes across 37 cells to selectively induce proton exchange and contamination reactions in LLZO. The resulting bulk and surface chemistry is systematically characterized and correlated to changes in electrochemical properties. Additionally, we combine impedance analysis and finite element method modeling to deconvolute sources of impedance contributions at the Li metal interface. Specifically, we show that constriction impedance at the Li metal interface arises not solely from voids, but also from ionically-resistive surface contaminants. These findings emphasize the connection between ionic conductivity and constriction, demonstrating that micron-scale ionically-resistive components increase constriction even with identical contact geometries. Finally, we leverage our comprehensive dataset to highlight unstable overpotential growth as a failure mechanism, additionally showing that the phase of a cell’s impedance is a sensitive indicator for the onset of interfacial instability. Overall, this study clarifies the impacts of proton exchange and surface contamination on electrochemical properties at the Li|solid electrolyte interface and elucidates insights that are generalizable to other solid-state battery systems.

Building an Air Stable and Lithium Deposition Regulable Garnet Interface from Moderate-Temperature Conversion Chemistry

Abstract:Garnet-type electrolytes suffer from unstable chemistry against air exposure, which generates contaminants on electrolyte surface and accounts for poor interfacial contact with the Li metal. Thermal treatment of the garnet at >700 °C could remove the surface contaminants, yet it regenerates the contaminants in the air, and aggravates the Li dendrite issue as more electron-conducting defective sites are exposed. In a departure from the removal approach, here we report a new surface chemistry that converts the contaminants into a fluorinated interface at moderate temperature <180 °C. The modified interface shows a high electron tunneling barrier and a low energy barrier for Li+ surface diffusion, so that it enables dendrite-proof Li plating/stripping at a high critical current density of 1.4 mA cm-2 . Moreover, the modified interface exhibits high chemical and electrochemical stability against air exposure, which prevents regeneration of contaminants and keeps high critical current density of 1.1 mA cm-2 . The new chemistry presents a practical solution for realization of high-energy solid-state Li metal batteries.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium batteries can improve the safety and energy density of the present liquid-electrolyte-based lithium-ion batteries. To achieve this goal, both solid electrolyte and lithium anode technology are the keys. Lithium garnet is a promising electrolyte to enable the next generation solid-state lithium batteries due to its high ionic conductivity, good chemical, and electrochemical stability, and easiness to scale up. It is relatively stable against Li metal but the poor contact area and the presence of resistive impurity or decomposition layers at the interface interfere with fast charge transfer, thereby, spiking the interfacial resistance, overpotential, local current density, and the propensity for dendrite growth. In this Review, we first summarize the recent understanding of the interfacial problems at the Li/garnet interface from both computational and experimental viewpoints while seizing the opportunity to shed light on the chemical/electrochemical stability of garnet against Li metal anode. Also, we highlight various interface optimization strategies that have been demonstrated to be effective in improving the interface performance. We conclude this Review with a few suggestions as guides for future work.

Abstract:<p>Due to an ultrahigh theoretical specific capacity of 3860 mAh g<sup>−1</sup>, lithium (Li) is regarded as the ultimate anode for high‐energy‐density batteries. However, the practical application of Li metal anode is hindered by safety concerns and low Coulombic efficiency both of which are resulted fromunavoidable dendrite growth during electrodeposition. This study focuses on a critical parameter for electrodeposition, the exchange current density, which has attracted only little attention in research on Li metal batteries. A phase‐field model is presented to show the effect of exchange current density on electrodeposition behavior of Li. The results show that a uniform distribution of cathodic current density, hence uniform electrodeposition, on electrode is obtained with lower exchange current density. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that lower exchange current density contributes to form a larger critical radius of nucleation in the initial electrocrystallization that results in a dense deposition of Li, which is a foundation for improved Coulombic efficiency and dendrite‐free morphology. The findings not only pave the way to practical rechargeable Li metal batteries but can also be translated to the design of stable metal anodes, e.g., for sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), and zinc (Zn) batteries.</p>

Abstract:To satisfy the ever-increasing demand for higher energy density, solid-state batteries (SSBs) have received significant attention due to their potential in providing energy densities greater than 400 Wh kg−1. And as a key material in SSBs, the garnet-type Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) electrolyte is particularly promising because of its high ionic conductivity at room temperature and excellent chemical stability against Li metal. And although great progress has been achieved for garnet electrolytes, many critical issues remain in terms of the practical application of garnet-based SSBs with truly high energy densities. Based on this, this review will provide an overview of the current progress in solid garnet batteries in terms of electrolyte fabrication and interfacial engineering in prototype cells. In addition, various strategies used to meet application requirements are comprehensively reviewed, including not only strategies to enhance energy density, but also methods to enhance rate capability, extend cycle life, decrease cost and reduce thermal runaways. Furthermore, crucial challenges are presented and future research directions are proposed in the development of high-performance solid lithium batteries.Graphic Abstract

Abstract:Garnet solid electrolyte is expected to become the electrolyte of choice for next-generation solid-state batteries due to its high ionic conductivity and wide electrochemical window. However, the poor interfacial contact between electrolyte and electrodes limits the battery performance. In this work, the interface between the garnet and cathode is improved by utilizing a deep eutectic electrolyte (DEE) composed of 2,2′-dipyridyl disulfide and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl)imide (LiTFSI) with high ionic conductivity and viscosity. It can favorably bind carbon and LiFePO 4 particles, forming an intimate contact between the garnet and active material. In addition, by utilizing a succinonitrile gel electrolyte between the lithium metal anode and garnet, the assembled solid-state cell shows improved interfacial stability and promising cycling performance, i.e. , a high initial discharge capacity of 134.2 mAh g −1 and capacity retention of 97.8% after 100 cycles at 0.2 C.

However, the elastic modulus of the garnet electrolyte leads to deteriorated interfacial contacts, and the increasing in electronic conduction at either anode/garnet interface or grain boundary results in Li dendrite growth. In this review, recent development of the solid interfaces for the garnet electrolytes, including the strategies of Li dendrite suppression and interfacial chemical/electrochemical/mechanical stabilizations are presented. A new viewpoint of the double edges of interfacial lithiophobicity is proposed, and the rational design of the interphases, as well as effective stacking methods of the garnet based SSLBs are summarized. Moreover, practical roles of the garnet electrolyte in SSLBs industry are also discussed. This work delivers insights into the solid interfaces for the garnet electrolytes, which provides not only the promotion of the garnet based SSLBs, but also a comprehensive understanding of the interfacial stabilization for the whole SSEs family. In Situ Visual Observation of Surface Energy-Controlled Heterogeneous Nucleation of Metal Nanocrystals

Abstract:Electrochemical growth of metal nanocrystals is pivotal for material synthesis, processing, and resource recovery. Understanding the heterogeneous interface between electrolyte and electrode is crucial for nanocrystal nucleation, but the influence of this interaction is still poorly understood. This study employs advanced in situ measurements to investigate the heterogeneous nucleation of metals on solid surfaces. By observing the copper nanocrystal electrodeposition, an interphase interaction-induced nucleation mechanism highly dependent on substrate surface energy is uncovered. It shows that a high-energy (HE) electrode tended to form a polycrystalline structure, while a low-energy (LE) electrode induced a monocrystalline structure. Raman and electrochemical characterizations confirmed that HE interface enhances the interphase interaction, reducing the nucleation barrier for the sturdy nanostructures. This leads to a 30.92-52.21% reduction in the crystal layer thickness and a 19.18-31.78% increase in the charge transfer capability, promoting the formation of a uniform and compact film. The structural compactness of the early nucleated crystals enhances the deposit stability for long-duration electrodeposition. This research not only inspires comprehension of physicochemical processes correlated with heterogeneous nucleation, but also paves a new avenue for high-quality synthesis and efficient recovery of metallic nanomaterials.

Abstract:With increasing demands to replace flammable liquid electrolytes, solid-state electrolytes have sparked interests both in academic and industrial sectors. In particular, Li-garnet LLZO (Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 ) exhibits outstanding electrical, chemical, and mechanical properties. Despite the promise, LLZO suffers from the formation of lithium (Li) dendrites at high current operations, thereby limiting the safety and performance of garnet-based solid-state batteries. Li metal nucleation and growth reportedly initiate and grow along the locality of grain boundaries (GBs) in such polycrystalline electrolytes, due either to low ionic or high electronic conductivity of the boundaries. However, limited understanding yet exists on the origins of the local GB conductivity mismatch. The mechanistic understanding should be an important prerequisite to develop engineering strategies of the failing GB interfaces. In this work, we first apply grain boundary core-space charge layer model to understand the basis of Li metal nucleation at GBs. Grain boundary core of LLZO is modeled to have excess negative charge potential, leading to the subsequent Li ionic carrier depletion and electronic carrier accumulation in the adjacent space charge layers. The carrier concentration variations then drive the local electronic conductivity surge and detrimental Li metal nucleation at the GBs. Both electrochemical and microscopic characterization techniques are employed to investigate the atomic-level composition and space charge potential at the GBs. This understanding offers us new strategies for controlling Li nucleation. First, sintering atmosphere is selectively chosen to reduce the potential barrier by suppressing intrinsic defect accumulation at the GB core. Second, an aliovalent dopant, with net-positive charge, is introduced to segregate to GB and mitigate the negative core potential. Both approaches are shown effective in lowering the electronic conductivity and to impede Li metal penetration. We successfully achieve critical current densities (CCD) of ~ 1 mA cm -2 ,a two-fold increase over prior reports. Our theoretical understanding and the engineering approaches will aid in interpreting the failure origin of the garnet electrolytes, and provide a blueprint on how to engineer GBs for improved safety and performance of all-solid-state Li metal batteries.
