Abstract:Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have recently attracted the attention of local people, authorities, and scientists. This is because of the important and negative consequences they have on the environment, economy, and health. One aspect of this interest is the possibility of knowing the mechanisms that trigger this phenomenon and therefore being able to mitigate it. In Mexico we have knowledge that many HAB events occur repeatedly throughout the year not only in oceanic waters but also in inland waters, where great damage is caused by this situation because these water bodies are used for fishing, recreation, irrigation, and animal and human consumption, among many other uses. This chapter will address HABs, the most important factors that cause them, the principal associated microalgae species, the toxins that they produce, the human symptomatology, and the permanence and behavior of these substances in the environment. Some biotechnological aspects related to these toxins and mitigation and monitoring strategies are also addressed.
