Abstract:Despite on-going advances in digital visualization technologies, the messy complexity of the corporeal landscape remains a challenging subject to represent. Nevertheless, realism-oriented rendering software developed in other fields drives an escalating supply and demand for hyper-realistic visualizations of design propositions. Through the lenses of perception, technology, technique, practice, and education, this paper argues that the limitations associated with hyper-realism in landscape design visualization are profound. In its place, the paper frames an adaptable visualization rubric that is more suited to the varied nuances of the landscape, while also complementing the intermediate skills of many designers who undertake landscape visualization.

Abstract:It is a valuable tradition of landscape architecture to focus on the critical challenges to the humanity and to provide spatial solutions. Facing the major issues of global governance, such as climate change, resource scarcity and environmental constraints, abrupt disasters, and even the emergence of disruptive technologies, an “intelligent transformation” of landscape architecture is a compelling way to address them. Recently, driven by the great progress of new technologies including ubiquitous sensing, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality, the intelligent transformation not only helps landscape architecture better respond to the critical issues in the entire process of situational awareness, problem analysis, scheme making, outcome representation, effectiveness evaluation, and governance and optimization, but also provides new opportunities for the discipline’s own transformation in terms of research objects, methodologies, and key skills.

Abstract:The article approaches 'landscape architecture', insisting on the term 'architecture' as describing landscape formations accepted as structured systems of composed, perceptual elements presenting organizational and aesthetic value. The central idea of this proposal refers to the key concept that design systems do not copy reality in its full complicated substance; they simply cannot manage to represent and work with the complex totality of the real surrounding world. They rather design abstract formational elements that 'schematize' reality and create composing syntactic systems, composing 'languages'. It was in this context that modern 20th-century garden designers insisted on the comparison of landscape design approaches with architectural abstract building plans or abstract early 20th century-paintings. However, analogous correlations may also be regarded in the opposite orientation. Thus, contemporary architectural projects are often described as 'landscape formations' in a period of environmental sensitivity combined with enlarged topological awareness; the latter presents earth bas-relief as a convincing metaphor of topological mathematical transformations in general, associated with computational 'animate' design. Nevertheless, the principal aim of the article is firstly to insist on the interchangeable approaches of hard-scape architectural design and green-scape design in terms of analogous abstract and schematized formations. Moreover, the present article intends to propose a possible didactic strategy of landscape design for architects or students in schools of architecture and for attendees already accustomed to building or hard-scape urban design. This design didactic strategy is principally founded on the concept that common abstract 'schematized' formations underlie all those practices: landscape design as well as building and urban design.

Abstract:Acknowledging the importance of climate challenges to our environment, landscape and cities, this review focuses on the exploration of visual methods (e.g., design, drawing, sketches) in relation to a deeper understanding of climate emergency and sustainability on a spatial scale. It provides an overview of existing research and highlights the role design and drawing can play in landscape-led projects, as well as the impact these might have on behavioural change and decision-making. Looking at how design and drawing are perceived in landscape architecture and what their contribution is to the narrative of a project as well as the decisions made, this paper establishes a connection between pictorial forms and landscape. At the same time, this paper explores whether visualisations are used in relation to the climate and environmental challenges we face, sharing some light on the role they can play with regards to climate awareness and sustainability and how important they might be for our communities, cities and regions. This review highlights the need for further research around this topic and explains that there is a minor part of the literature looking at ways in which landscape design can be integrated into the wider climate emergency agenda and how this might influence behavioural change and the decision-making of various stakeholders.

Abstract:In landscape architecture, visual representations are the primary means of communication between stakeholders in design processes. Despite the reliance on visual representations, little critical research has been undertaken by landscape architects on how visual communication forms work or their socio-political implications. In this theoretical paper, we argue that such research is of great importance. We explain how concepts of visual and critical social theory such as visual semiotics, simulacra and simulation, and power/knowledge can be used to critically reflect on landscape architectural representations. We further propose to study these representations at different stages of meaning-making by using visual methodologies such as visual discourse analysis, iconographical content analysis and social semiotic analysis. We conclude that these research approaches have the potential to explain issues such as dominant power structures, miscommunication between participants, and visual path-dependencies during landscape design processes.

Abstract:This position paper argues for, and offers, a critical lens through which to examine the current AI frenzy in the landscape architecture profession. In it, the authors propose five archetypes or mental modes that landscape architects might inhabit when thinking about AI. Rather than limiting judgments of AI use to a single axis of acceleration, these archetypes and corresponding narratives exist along a relational spectrum and are permeable, allowing LAs to take on and switch between them according to context. We model these relationships between the archetypes and their contributions to AI advancement using a causal loop diagram (CLD), and with those interactions argue that more nuanced ways of approaching AI might also open new modes of practice in the new digital economy.

Abstract:The unprecedented expansion of digital technologies has led to a rapid increase in the development and application of 3D digital environments for landscape and urban planning in the past two decades. Considering the significant challenges in guiding human societies towards sustainability, these technologies must not only assist decision-makers in adapting to changes but promote fast, transformative shifts in the relationship between human societies and nature. Based on a set of global exemplars, this Perspective Essay outlines six key factors that can enhance efficacy of 3D digital environments to guide knowledge-informed landscape and urban planning. We call for (1) explicitly representing dynamic interplay between the social, ecological, and technical systems, (2) exploring the integration of design with simulation models to address cross-scale dynamics, (3) developing features to foster imagination, (4) employing multisensory stimuli to encourage profound changes in environmentally and socially sustainable behavior, (5) tailoring the incorporation of active sensing by and with non-experts into 3D digital environments to better acknowledge indigenous and local knowledge systems, and finally, (6) carrying out a usability evaluation to facilitate participation and collaboration in an efficient co-creation process. We conclude by recommending the establishment of a collaborative knowledge platform that unites researchers, developers, and stakeholders for stimulating social-ecological-technological system thinking in the development of 3D digital environments and harnessing the technological advancements to accelerate and drive the needed transformative change within urban and landscape planning.

Abstract:Despite resurgent interest in landscape, the viability of landscape architecture has been questioned from within the field. The article positions this uncertainty as a symptom of shifts among the spatial design disciplines, which are enmeshed in a process of appropriation, relinquishment, and overlap of territory. Whereas the convergence of the spatial design disciplines has been interpreted as emblematic of landscape-based trans-disciplinary practice, a more contested cross-disciplinary interaction is identified and explored through analysis of design competition prizes and professional magazines. The discussion focusses on the interactions between architecture and landscape architecture, and considers potential implications for education and practice.

The traditional design methods need help. The digital landscape has become an important method of landscape architecture, and the development of Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) provides new opportunities for the digitalization process. Through the introduction of related concepts, the article takes the dilemma faced by traditional landscape architecture as the main entry point, explores the application form of AIGC in landscape architecture workflow from three aspects: information analysis, design assistance, and innovation demand, and identifies that AIGC-enabled development is the road to the future of landscape architecture. Finally, it discusses the possible misconceptions of the process, aiming to provide new ideas for landscape architecture digital transformation and system restructuring.

Based on this research background, the dissertation designs the spatial form of landscape architecture based on the data visualisation of nonlinear technology. The article uses the colour zoning method to design the actual scene of the garden landscape with nonlinear parameteriszation. The simulation result analyses that the proposed nonlinear algorithm has realised the efficiency improvement purpose of landscape architecture design.

Abstract:This article aims to act as a general literature review regarding the landscape, analyzing it through a synthesis of the main concepts and processes that have generated, and subsequently developed, the word “Landscape”. It is a versatile theme, because it has always been studied by various disciplines, through different theories, which sometimes even conflict with each other. Through the present text, we understand the importance and the unique value of the landscape, a value that has nowadays been transfigured by the strong industrialization and strong brand of man in the territory. Thus, the first part of the research is, to some extent, a reflection on current issues that are related to the landscape. It is also a tool for integration, including in the definition of “Landscape”, even those heavily humanized, exploited, degraded, abandoned, and residual; the so-called “Drosscape”, “Friche”, and “Terrain Vague”. The solution is not to negatively interpret these types of scenarios, but rather to enhance them as they are, filled with potential and creativity. This concept is achieved by means of an operation of recycling or reuse of waste, which is capable of germinating new life cycles within the “dead nature” of our increasingly cemented territories.

Abstract:While many authors have discussed the environmental planning methodology outlined by Ian McHarg in Design with Nature, little attention has been paid to the influence of modern architecture upon that planning and design manifesto. This article addresses that deficiency by examining three early articles by McHarg—“Open Space and Housing” (1955), “The Court House Concept” (1957), and “The Humane City” (1958). These articles situate McHarg’s promotion of open space, and his environmental activism, in relationship to an ambitious intellectual and political rationale that is firmly rooted within the functional, social, aesthetic, and heroic traditions of architectural modernism.

Abstract:Visual landscape design representations facilitate communication and knowledge exchange during participatory planning and design processes. The production of representations is considered to be a discursive act: actors and institutions construct knowledge with a certain authority and credibility through the use of visual expression. We aim to study the context in which the production of representations is embedded and how this context manifests itself in the communicative qualities of design representations. We present a visual discourse analysis of landscape design representations, employing empirical examples from the transdisciplinary design competition Rebuild by Design. The analysis uncovers interdependencies among three components of the visual discourse: the arrangement of participatory processes, media interactivity and the visual rhetoric embedded in the composition and style of the image. A conscious use of these discursive components could help prevent miscommunication, manage participant expectations and increase the validity of participatory design process outcomes.

Abstract:Traditional landscape design is mainly static expression, which has limitations, so it is urgent to find new and breakthrough design methods. The responsive landscape dominated by digital media technology is obviously distinguished from the traditional static landscape by its dynamic landscape form. It stimulates the birth of "life landscape" through the dynamic deduction of digital technology, which provides a new direction and development prospect for the development and innovation of landscape design. From the perspectives of modeling, technology and communication, this paper analyzes how the responsive landscape interacts with the environment organically by using the dynamic model, and establishes a close relationship between the landscape, environment and human. The study of responsive landscape can open up new ideas for landscape design and create more dynamic landscape forms. Its consideration of the natural environment is of great ecological significance.

Abstract:In the face of the impending crisis of the biosphere, the debate in the design disciplines has been attracted to the disciplinary precincts of ecology and its dynamics, while the notion of landscape continuum tends to englobe that of territory. The intention to contaminate traditional land transformation approaches with sustainable approaches derived from landscape ecology has been recorded. At the same time, a particular focus on the study of the metabolism of territorial entities has emerged beside the traditional interest in the study of their morphology. This paper tackles the theme of the special issue on 'Constructed Natures: Shaping Ecologies through Landscape Design' by adopting the recurrent method of human sciences, via discursive analysis of literature and case-studies. First, the paper characterizes the origins and reasons for the ecological crisis. Secondly, we review the recently growing interest developed in the landscape design disciplines for the ecological/metabolic aspects vis-à-vis the traditional focus on morphological/compositive aspects. Finally, we review three case-studies representative of distinct contemporary approaches to landscape reform responding in distinct manners to the impending ecological crisis. The compared analysis of the case-studies identifies strengths and weaknesses of the different approaches. The paper's conclusions summarize the profile of a virtuous approach to the reform landscape apparatuses and draw possible lines of further research and experimentation in the field of landscape design and its relationship to ecology.
