Abstract:Changes in the relationship between interannual variation of spring (March–April–May) surface air temperature (SAT) over eastern Eurasia (SAT_EA) and Eurasian snow during 1972–2009 are investigated. The results show that the interannual variation in SAT_EA is significantly correlated with Eurasian snow cover anomalies (SCA) over two key regions, which include the western (SCAW) and eastern (SCAE) parts of the Eurasian continent. A pronounced climate shift of SAT_EA is observed around the late 1980s, and therefore, the data are divided into two subperiods, that is, 1972–1987 (P1) and 1988–2009 (P2). Examinations show that the relationship between SAT_EA and SCAW is impacted by the Arctic Oscillation. In contrast, the relationship between SCAE and the SAT_EA is Arctic Oscillation independent and is significantly increased from P1 to P2. Further analysis shows that the increased correlation between SAT_EA and SCAE from P1 to P2 cannot be well explained by the snow‐related surface heat flux. A wave train‐like anomalous circulation plays an important role in enhancing their relationship through intensified wind‐induced heat advection in P2, which causes reduced snow and increased SAT_EA. A lead‐lag regression analysis of the SCAE and the circulation anomalies indicates that the changes of the SCAE and SAT_EA are mainly responses to atmospheric circulation anomalies that occur 2 months before spring. Numerical experiments that use a linear baroclinic model indicate that the snow anomalies around Lake Baikal may impact the variation of SAT_EA through modulating atmospheric circulation over the East Asia‐North Pacific area.
Interdecadal Change of the Impact of Eurasian Snow on Spring Precipitation over Southern China

Abstract:This study investigates the interdecadal changes in the relationship between the Eurasian snow cover extent (SCE) and spring precipitation over southern China. The results show that the spring precipitation over southern China has experienced an obvious change from an active to a quiet period since the late 1980s. The entire data set is divided into two subperiods, that is, 1972–1987 (P1) and 1988–2009 (P2). The interannual variation of the spring precipitation of southern China is found to be significantly related to Eurasian SCE anomalies around northwest of Lake Baikal. Less‐than‐normal SCE northwest of Lake Baikal corresponds to more‐than‐normal spring precipitation over southern China. The result of a numerical experiment performed using a baroclinic atmospheric model indicates that the Eurasian snow anomalies around northwest of Lake Baikal can impact the variation of spring precipitation over southern China by modulating the atmospheric circulations over eastern Asia and the western North Pacific region. Further examination shows that the SCE anomalies around Lake Baikal contribute differently to the variation of spring precipitation over southern China before and after the late 1980s. During P1, the SCE anomalies around Lake Baikal contribute to the variation of spring precipitation over China in the form of a mono‐sign pattern, which is similar to the first empirical orthogonal function mode of spring precipitation, while in P2, the SCE anomalies around Lake Baikal favor a north‐south dipole mode of the spring precipitation variation, which bears considerable similarity to the second empirical orthogonal function mode of spring precipitation over China.
Contrasting Eurasian Spring and Summer Climate Anomalies Associated with Western and Eastern Eurasian Spring Snow Cover Changes

Abstract:Spring snow cover variations over Eurasia consist of a same-sign component and a west-east dipole component. The same-sign component is dominant during late 1970s through 1980s, and the two components are equally important during 1990s and 2000s. Present study contrasted Eurasian spring and summer climate anomalies associated with western and eastern Eurasian spring snow cover variations and between 1975-1989 and 1993-2007 and found notable differences and obvious interdecadal changes in Eurasian climate anomalies. After 1990, spring surface temperature anomalies display an obvious west-east contrast pattern, consistent with a prominent atmospheric wave pattern over Eurasia. The temperature anomalies are larger corresponding to western than eastern Eurasian snow cover change. Snow-albedo effect plays a main role in temperature change during 1975-1989, whereas atmospheric processes also contribute largely to temperature change during 1993-2007. Large soil moisture anomalies occur corresponding to western Eurasian snow cover and during 1975-1989. The snow-hydrological effect on summer precipitation is mainly detected over the West Siberian Plain where soil moisture anomalies persist over 3 months. Over most of other Eurasian regions, atmospheric circulation pattern plays a dominant role in summer surface temperature and precipitation variations. The relationship of Indian summer rainfall to western Eurasian spring snow cover was weakened since the mid-1990s, and the correlation of Northeast China summer rainfall with local spring snow cover changed from positive to negative around 1990.
Decreasing Influence of Summer Snow Cover over the Western Tibetan Plateau on East Asian Precipitation under Global Warming

Abstract:In recent years, some studies emphasized the influence of western Tibetan Plateau summer snow on the East Asian summer precipitation. With the temperature rise in the past decades, the snow cover over the western Tibetan Plateau in summer has significantly decreased. This raises the question whether the impact of the Tibetan Plateau snow has changed. The present study identifies a prominent change in the influence of the western Tibetan Plateau snow cover on the East Asian summer precipitation. Before the early 2000’s, positive precipitation anomalies extend from the southeastern Tibetan Plateau through the Yangtze River to Japan and Korea and negative anomalies cover southeast China corresponding to more Tibetan Plateau snow cover. After the early 2000’s, with the reduction of snow cover variability, below-normal and above-normal summer precipitation occurs over northern China-Mongolia and northeast Asia, respectively, corresponding to more Tibetan Plateau snow cover. The change in the influence of the Tibetan Plateau snow on the East Asian summer precipitation is associated with an obvious change in the atmospheric circulation anomaly pattern. Before the early 2000’s, the wind anomalies display a south-north contrast pattern with anomalous convergence along the Yangtze River. After the early 2000’s, an anomalous cyclone occupies Northeast China with anomalous southerlies and northerlies over northeast Asia and northern China, respectively. The Tibetan Plateau snow cover variation after the early 2000’s is associated with the northeast Indian summer precipitation. The model experiments confirm that the weakened influence of summer western Tibetan Plateau snow cover on the East Asian atmospheric circulation and precipitation with the reduced snow cover anomalies.

Abstract:This study investigates the relationship between spring and summer rainfall in East Asia and the preceding winter and spring snow cover/depth over Eurasia, using station rainfall observations, satellite-observed snow cover, satellite-derived snow water equivalent, and station observations of the number of days of snow cover and snow depth. Correlation analysis shows that snow-depth anomalies can persist from winter to spring whereas snow cover anomalies cannot in most regions of Eurasia. Locally, snow cover and snow-depth anomalies in February are not related in most regions to the north of 50 degrees N, but those anomalies in April display consistent year-to-year variations. The results suggest that the winter snow cover cannot properly represent all the effects of snow and it is necessary to separate the winter and spring snow cover in addressing the snow-monsoon relationship.Spring snow cover in western Siberia is positively correlated with spring rainfall in southern China. The circulation anomalies associated with the western Siberian spring snow cover variations show an apparent wave pattern over the eastern Atlantic through Europe and midlatitude Asia. Spring snow cover over the Tibetan Plateau shows a moderate positive correlation with spring rainfall in southern China. Analysis shows that this correlation includes El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) effects. In contrast to the Indian summer monsoon rainfall for which the ENSO interferes with the snow effects. the Tibetan Plateau snow cover and ENSO work cooperatively to enhance spring rainfall anomalies in southern China. In comparison, ENSO has larger impacts than the snow on spring rainfall in southern China.

Abstract:Monsoons affect a large percent of the world’s population. Snow cover modulates land surface conditions and consequently the land-sea thermal contrast. Thus, snow over the land is an important factor for monsoon variations. In a warming climate, both snow and monsoon are subject to notable changes. The snow-monsoon relationship has also experienced changes in the past. Improved understanding of the factors responsible for the changes in snow over various regions and in different components of monsoon, and the physical reasons for the changes in snow-monsoon relationship will help to alleviate monsoon-related adverse impacts on societal development. This special issue “Changes in Snow, Monsoon and Snow-Monsoon Relationship in theWarming Climate” includes articles that address the impacts of snow cover on Asian climate and changes in the snow-monsoon relationship in a warming climate. Papers range from the impacts of the Tibetan Plateau and Eurasian snow cover on the winter atmospheric circulation and East Asian winter monsoon to summer precipitation and extremes. Papers also consider the regulation of solar activity on the Tibetan Plateau snow variations and their impacts on summer precipitation in China and evaluate the ability of coupled models in simulating the Eurasian snow and its relationship with atmospheric circulation. Three papers in this special issue are focused on the impacts of the Tibetan Plateau snow changes. Chen et al. analyzed the role of eastern Tibetan Plateau autumn-winter snow cover in the variability of the northern component of the East Asian winter monsoon. Song et al. documented the linkage of the spring Tibetan Plateau snow to summer precipitation in China. Wang et al. examined the impact of summer western Tibetan Plateau snow cover on East Asian summer precipitation. Four papers are focused on the impacts of Eurasian snow on winter atmospheric circulation. Yang and Fan analyzed the influence of November Siberian snow on the out-of-phase Siberian High change in December and January and the responsible physical mechanism. Sun et al. documented the connection of diverse winter Siberian high variation modes with preceding autumn and simultaneous winter Eurasian snow cover. Zhang and Sun revealed the impacts of central Siberian October snow cover on spring extreme precipitation in southern China. Yao et al. identified the relation of summer compound hot and dry extreme days in China to the preceding winter Northern Hemisphere snow. Four papers revealed that the effects of snow on climate have experienced interdecadal changes. Chen et al. identified an interdecadal weakening in the relationship of the northern component of East Asian winter monsoon to autumn-winter Tibetan Plateau snow cover in the mid-1990’s. Yang and Fan unraveled the intensified impact of spring Siberian snow on the out-of-phase DecemberJanuary Siberian high relation after 2000. Weakening of Indian Summer Monsoon in Recent Decades

Abstract:The analysis of 43 years of NCEP-NCAR reanalysis data and station observations reveals the connections between tropospheric temperature variations and the weakening of the Indian summer monsoon circulation. The Indian summer monsoon variation is strongly linked to tropospheric temperature over East Asia, showing significant positive correlations of mean tropospheric temperature with all-Indian summer rainfall and the monsoon circulation intensity. The result shows that Indian summer monsoon circulation underwent two weakening processes in recent decades. The first occurred in circa the mid-1960s, and the other occurred in circa the late 1970s. The finding indicates that the mean tropospheric temperature may play a crucial role in the weakening of the Indian summer monsoon intensity via changing land-sea thermal contrast. The role of the tropospheric temperature contrast between East Asia and the tropical area from the eastern Indian Ocean to the tropical western Pacific is to weaken the Indian summer monsoon circulation.
Eurasian Snow Cover Variability and Its Association with Summer Rainfall in China

Abstract:This study investigates the statistical linkage between summer rainfall in China and the preceding spring Eurasian snow water equivalent (SWE), using the datasets of summer rainfall observations from 513 stations, satellite-observed snow water equivalent, and atmospheric circulation variables in the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis during the period from 1979 to 2004. The first two coupled modes are identified by using the singular value decomposition (SVD) method. The leading SVD mode of the spring SWE variability shows a coherent negative anomaly in most of Eurasia with the opposite anomaly in some small areas of the Tibetan Plateau and East Asia. The mode displays strong interannual variability, superposed on an interdecadal variation that occurred in the late 1980s, with persistent negative phases in 1979–1987 and frequent positive phases afterwards. When the leading mode is in its positive phase, it corresponds to less SWE in spring throughout most of Eurasia. Meanwhile, excessive SWE in some small areas of the Tibetan Plateau and East Asia, summer rainfall in South and Southeast China tends to be increased, whereas it would be decreased in the up-reaches of the Yellow River. In recent two decades, the decreased spring SWE in Eurasia may be one of reasons for severe droughts in North and Northeast China and much more significant rainfall events in South and Southeast China. The second SVD mode of the spring SWE variability shows opposite spatial variations in western and eastern Eurasia, while most of the Tibetan Plateau and East Asia are in phase. This mode significantly correlates with the succeeding summer rainfall in North and Northeast China, that is, less spring SWE in western Eurasia and excessive SWE in eastern Eurasia and the Tibetan Plateau tend to be associated with decreased summer rainfall in North and Northeast China.
Interdecadal variability of winter and spring Eurasian snow depth and its impact on Eastern China precipitation

Abstract:Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) and correlation analyses were employed to investigate the winter and spring snow depth in Eurasia and its relationship with Eastern China precipitation based on the observed and reanalyzed data from 1980 to 2016. The results show that the winter and spring snow cover in Eurasia not only highlights a decreasing trend due to global warming (the first EOF mode, its variance accounted for 24.4% and 22.6% of the total variance) but also exhibits notable interdecadal variation (the second EOF mode, its variance accounted for 10.2% and 11.5% of the total variance). The second EOF mode of winter snow depth in Eurasia is characterized by a west-east dipole pattern. It was observed that the spatial correlation pattern between the EOF2 of Eurasian snow depth and summer precipitation in China closely resembles the meridional quadrupole structure of the third EOF mode of summer precipitation in China. This pattern is characterized by excessive rainfall in Northeast China and the lower-middle reaches of the Yangtze River, and less rainfall over the Yellow River basin and southern China. The EOF mode of spring snow depth not only reflects the declining trend but also regulates precipitation in Eastern China. The possible mechanisms by which snow depth causes changes in soil moisture and subsequently affects atmospheric circulation are then explored from the perspective of the hydrological effects of snow cover. Decreased (Increased) snow depth in Eurasia during the winter and spring directly leads to diminished (increased) soil moisture while increasing (decreasing) net radiation and sensible heat flux at the surface. The meridional distribution of surface temperature also exhibits a dipole pattern, leading to enhanced subtropical westerly jet in the upper troposphere. The Eurasian snow cover anomalies pattern triggered an anomalous mid-latitude Eurasian wave train, which strengthened significantly in the Western Siberian Plain. It then splits into two branches, one continuing to propagate eastward at high latitudes and the other shifting towards East Asia, thereby impacting precipitation in Eastern China. This work indicates that the second EOF mode of Eurasian snow cover can impact the precipitation variability in Eastern China during the same period and in summer on an interdecadal scale.

Increasing summer precipitation in arid Central Asia linked to the weakening of the East Asian summer monsoon in the recent decades

Abstract:<p>It is generally believed that water vapour from the North Atlantic transported by the mid‐latitude westerlies dominates precipitation variations in arid central Asia, where monsoonal water vapour source is beyond the reach. This study reexamines water vapour sources for arid central Asia based on daily reanalysis data. The results reveal two water vapour sources for arid central Asia: the westerly water vapour transport from the North Atlantic and the monsoonal water vapour transport from the tropical Indian Ocean and South China Sea. The monsoonal transport includes two pathways: lower tropospheric water vapour along the eastern and northern periphery of the Tibetan Plateau from the tropical Indian Ocean and South China Sea, and middle‐upper tropospheric water vapour via the Tibetan Plateau from the tropical Indian Ocean. Precipitation variability during the monsoonal transport events explains 81% of the total variance. The monsoonal transport is related to a weakened East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) that is accompanied by persistent westward shift of the western Pacific subtropical high and increasing frequency of Mongolian anticyclone activities. The EASM has experienced a persistent weakening trend since 1958, causing an increasing contribution of the monsoonal water vapour transport and thereby enhancing summer precipitation in arid central Asia. In particular, the monsoonal easterly water vapour has become the dominant source for arid central Asia in the lower troposphere during the last decade. This study highlights the important role of the EASM in the wetting trend of summers in arid central Asia during the past six decades.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Arctic Summer Precipitation Variability and Its Association with Indian Summer Monsoon Anomalies

Abstract:In recent years, there has been an increased focus on changes in Arctic precipitation，however, dominant characteristics of Arctic summer precipitation variability and their relationship to atmospheric circulation anomalies in the mid-low latitudes remain debatable. Spatially, the leading mode of Arctic summer precipitation variability is positive in most regions of the Arctic, corresponding to a cold anomaly in the middle and lower troposphere of the Arctic. As the temperature gradient between the Arctic and high latitudes increases, the zonal westerlies over the Arctic enhanced and lead to increased local baroclinicity and moisture convergence over the Arctic. This creats favorable conditions for increased summer precipitation. Additionally, it is found that there is a robust correlation between the first mode of Arctic summer precipitation and the Indian summer monsoon. Specifically, the positive Arctic summer precipitation anomaly is accompanied by a systematic northward shift of the zonal westerlies in the mid-latitude. The northward shift of the Asian westerly jet stream is associated with the intensified tropical easterly jet in the upper-troposphere and low-stratosphere, resulting in the strengthening of the monsoon circulation over the Indian Peninsula and then facilitating the precipitation anomaly over India. Numerical experiments reproduce the major features of the observed Arctic-Indian summer monsoon association, implying that Arctic summer precipitation variability is dynamically linked to tropical atmospheric circulation anomalies.
Synchronous spring precipitation in Southeastern China and Bengal: a potential indicator for the Indian summer monsoon?

Abstract:Spring precipitation in southeastern China and Bengal, occurring during the transitional phase from winter to summer monsoons, serves as a critical window into the dynamics of large-scale circulations and the subsequent summer monsoon. While many studies have analyzed spring precipitation in southeastern China and Bengal, their interconnections and implications for the summer monsoon have remained relatively under explored. We utilized the Empirical Orthogonal Function of spring precipitation to reveal Synchronous Spring Precipitation (SSP) in southeastern China and Bengal. This synchronicity is bridged by the East Asian Subtropical Jet (EASJ) that extends from Bengal to southeastern China. The EASJ was predominantly correlated with precipitation in southeastern China prior to the 1990s, while it developed a more profound connection with precipitation in Bengal after the 1990s. Notably, SSP anomalies occurred during the developing phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The predictive capacity of SSP for the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) amplifies during periods of the intensified SSP-ENSO correlations and positive phase of the North Pacific Meridional Mode (NPMM). Tree-ring based reconstructions spanning the past two centuries further corroborate the persistent linkages among the SSP, ISM, and ENSO. Our research sheds light on the intricate interplay of these factors and their significance in understanding and predicting the monsoon dynamics in the region.

Impact of Eurasian Spring Snow Decrement on East Asian Summer Precipitation

Abstract:In this study, the relationship between Eurasian spring snow decrement (SSD) and East Asian summer precipitation and related mechanisms were investigated using observational data and the Community Atmospheric Model, version 3.1 (CAM3.1). The results show that a west–east dipole pattern in Eurasian SSD anomalies, with a negative center located in the region between eastern Europe and the West Siberia Plain (EEWSP) and a positive center located around Baikal Lake (BL), is significantly associated with East Asian summer precipitation via triggering an anomalous midlatitude Eurasian wave train. Reduced SSD over EEWSP corresponds to anomalously dry local soil conditions from spring to the following summer, thereby increasing surface heat flux and near-surface temperatures. Similarly, the increase in SSD over BL is accompanied by anomalously low near-surface temperatures. The near-surface thermal anomalies cause an anomalous meridional temperature gradient, which intensifies the lower-level baroclinicity and causes an acceleration of the subtropical westerly jet stream, leading to an enhanced and maintained Eurasian wave train. Additionally, the atmospheric response to changed surface thermal conditions tends to simultaneously increase the local 1000–500-hPa thickness, which further enhances the Eurasian wave train. Consequently, significant wave activity flux anomalies spread from eastern Europe eastward to East Asia and significantly influence the summer precipitation over China, with more rainfall over northeastern China and the Yellow River valley and less rainfall over Inner Mongolia and southern China.

Abstract:The South Asian summer monsoon (SASM) is a significant monsoon system that exerts a profound impact on climate and human livelihoods. According to 38 models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6, the SASM circulation is projected to weaken significantly under global warming as seen in the weakened low-level westerly wind over the northern tropical Indian Ocean; however, the associated climate dynamics is still under debate. Here, we identify that the weakened low-level westerly wind is closely related to the enhanced latent heating over the Tibetan Plateau (TP), which corresponds with increased summer precipitation in the future. The intensified TP latent heating triggers an anomalous meridional circulation with ascending motions over the plateau and descending motions to the south, leading to an anomalous low-level anticyclone over the northern tropical Indian Ocean. This anticyclone greatly weakens the prevailing low-level westerlies of the SASM through easterly anomalies at the anticyclone's southern flank. Moisture budget analysis further reveals that increased atmospheric water vapor, rather than the vertical dynamic component, makes the largest contribution to the increased precipitation over the TP. This result confirms that the enhanced TP latent heating is a driver of atmospheric circulation change and contributes to weakening the SASM circulation.

The Interdecadal Weakening of the Relationship Between Indian Ocean Sea Surface Temperature and Summer Precipitation in Central Asia

Abstract:The close relationship between the Indian Ocean Basin mode (IOBM) and summer precipitation in Central Asia (CA) has been documented in several studies. Nonetheless, this relationship has weakened since the 1990s and varies with the Atlantic Multi‐decadal Oscillation (AMO) phase transition. During the cold phase of the AMO (1970–1998), precipitation in CA was significantly positively correlated with the IOBM. Conversely, during the warm phase of the AMO (1999–2019), this correlation became insignificant. The decrease in the interannual variation in the IOBM resulted in the weakening of the atmospheric heat source variation over the North Indian continent and the south‐north movement of the subtropical westerly jet (SWJ). Along with the southerly SWJ, the IOBM exhibited only a weak positive correlation with precipitation in southern CA after the 1990s. This remarkable contrast in the impact of IOBM during different phases of the AMO offers intriguing possibilities for improving climate prediction in CA.

Abstract:Prediction of Indian summer monsoon rainfall (ISMR) is at the heart of tropical climate prediction. Despite enormous progress having been made in predicting ISMR since 1886, the operational forecasts during recent decades (1989-2012) have little skill. Here we show, with both dynamical and physical-empirical models, that this recent failure is largely due to the models' inability to capture new predictability sources emerging during recent global warming, that is, the development of the central-Pacific El Nino-Southern Oscillation (CP-ENSO), the rapid deepening of the Asian Low and the strengthening of North and South Pacific Highs during boreal spring. A physical-empirical model that captures these new predictors can produce an independent forecast skill of 0.51 for 1989-2012 and a 92-year retrospective forecast skill of 0.64 for 1921-2012. The recent low skills of the dynamical models are attributed to deficiencies in capturing the developing CP-ENSO and anomalous Asian Low. The results reveal a considerable gap between ISMR prediction skill and predictability.

Abstract:The major advances in the researches on the relationship between the Eurasia snowcover and Asian monsoon are summarized.The varying area and thickness of the Eurasia snowcover can exert remarkably influences on the thermal characteristics and hydrologic processes of the land surface,and thus influences the onset and development of Asian monsoon.It is generally thought that there is an inverse relationship between Eurasia snowcover and Asian monsoon,in both diagnostic and model researches,but the relationship is very complex,including interannual or decadal variability.Snowcover in different regions and seasons has different impacts on the monsoon,and some factors such as ENSO,NAO can also affect the relationship.There exist still many differences and questions in the present studies of the relationship between snowcover and monsoon,as well as the mechanisms that how snow influences climate.
Asian summer monsoon responses to the change of land‒sea thermodynamic contrast in a warming climate: CMIP6 projections

Abstract:It is of practical significance to use the updated Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models to study the impact of changes in land‒sea thermodynamic contrast (TC) on the Asian summer monsoon under different scenarios and to compare the similarities and differences of the impact mechanisms between different monsoon regions. In this study, we investigated future changes of the Asian summer monsoon under four Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) scenarios using 19 CMIP6 models. The intensity of the South Asian summer monsoon (SASM) is projected to decrease by 2.6%, 6.3%, 10.1%, and 11.1%, while the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) intensity is projected to increase by 4.6%, 7.9%, 7.4%, and 9.8% until the end of the 21st century for SSP126, SSP245, SSP370, and SSP585 scenarios, respectively. Moreover, summer precipitation in Asia is projected to increase remarkably in 2015–2099 under all four scenarios. The inconsistent warming trends over the Tibetan Plateau (TP), Northwest Pacific, and tropical Indian Ocean would greatly impact the monsoon circulations. The upper-troposphere warming trend over the surrounding oceans is remarkably greater than that over the TP, while the near-surface warming trend over the surrounding oceans is smaller than that over the TP. The decrease of upper-troposphere TC between the TP and tropical Indian Ocean results in a weakening of the SASM circulation. The enhancement of the lower-troposphere TC between the TP and Northwest Pacific would strengthen the EASM circulation. Moisture budget analysis shows that the water-vapor would increase in the future, which would thermodynamically enhance summer precipitation through the anomalous vertical moisture transport associated with mean flow. The strengthening of the meridional circulation of the EASM would increase monsoon precipitation, while the weakening of zonal circulation of the SASM would dynamically reduce South Asian summer precipitation.

Abstract:The large-scale Asian summer monsoon circulation has experienced a weakening tendency in recent decades. Using observed data and output from model experiments with the atmospheric component of the NCEP Climate Forecast System, the authors show that a relatively smaller warming in Asia compared to the surrounding regions may be a plausible reason for this change in the monsoon. Although the surface temperature over Asia has increased, the landmass has become a relative "heat sink" because of the larger warming in other regions of the world. Indeed, over Asia, the vertically integrated tropospheric temperature in the most recent decades is colder than that in the earlier decades, a feature different from the characteristics outside Asia.
