The Longitudinal Mediating Effect of Young Children’ Self-Concept on the Relationship between Fathers’ Parenting Participation and Young Children’ Self-Esteem

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this study was to verify change profile between fathers’ parenting participation, young children’ social competence and self-esteem, and to provide basic data for promoting young children’ self-esteem by analyzing longitudinal change profile. Method: For this purpose, 2008-2014 longitudinal data of PSKC provided by KICCE. The research objects were 964 young children from 6 regional area in Korea. To examine the effects of father's participation in parenting and self-concept on self-esteem, we used the potential growth model and examined the indirect and direct effects. Results: The results of this research were as follows: First, father’ parenting did not showed significant change and selected a non change model as it did not increased from time passes. Second, fathers’ parenting participation and young children’ social competence show significant direct influence on the young children’ self-esteem. Third, young children’ social competence is found to have partial mediating effects on the longitudinal relationship between fathers’ parenting participation and young children’ social competence. Conclusion: Based on these results, it was suggested to look into the self-esteem of the children in the aspect of consecutive aspects of the self-concept and the plan to help the father's participation in the nurture to support the improvement of the self-esteem of the children.
