Abstract:The boundary knot method is an inherently meshless, integration-free, boundary-type, radial basis function collocation technique for the solution of partial differential equations. In this paper, the method is applied to the solution of some inverse problems for the Helmholtz equation, including the highly ill-posed Cauchy problem. Since the resulting matrix equation is badly ill-conditioned, a regularized solution is obtained by employing truncated singular value decomposition, while the regularization parameter for the regularization method is provided by the L-curve method. Numerical results are presented for both smooth and piecewise smooth geometry. The stability of the method with respect to the noise in the data is investigated by using simulated noisy data. The results show that the method is highly accurate, computationally efficient and stable, and can be a competitive alternative to existing methods for the numerical solution of the problems. Abstract:In this paper, a new numerical scheme based on the method of fundamental solutions is proposed for the numerical solution of some inverse boundary value problems associated with the Helmholtz equation, including the Cauchy problem. Since the resulting matrix equation is badly ill-conditioned, a regularized solution is obtained by employing truncated singular value decomposition, while the regularization parameter for the regularization method is provided by the L-curve method. Numerical results are presented for problems on smooth and piecewise smooth domains with both exact and noisy data, and the convergence and stability of the scheme are investigated. These results show that the proposed scheme is highly accurate, computationally efficient, stable with respect to the noise in the data and convergent with respect to decreasing the amount of data noise and increasing the distance between the physical and fictitious boundaries, and could be considered as a competitive alternative to existing methods for these problems.
On the use of rational-function fitting methods for the solution of 2D Laplace boundary-value problems

Abstract:A computational scheme for solving 2D Laplace boundary-value problems using rational functions as the basis functions is described. The scheme belongs to the class of desingularized methods, for which the location of singularities and testing points is a major issue that is addressed by the proposed scheme, in the context of the 2D Laplace equation. Well-established rational-function fitting techniques are used to set the poles, while residues are determined by enforcing the boundary conditions in the least-squares sense at the nodes of rational Gauss-Chebyshev quadrature rules. Numerical results show that errors approaching the machine epsilon can be obtained for sharp and almost sharp corners, nearly-touching boundaries, and almost-singular boundary data. We show various examples of these cases in which the method yields compact solutions, requiring fewer basis functions than the Nyström method, for the same accuracy. A scheme for solving fairly large-scale problems is also presented.

Abstract:We propose a method to construct numerical solutions of parabolic equations on the unit sphere. The time discretization uses Laplace transforms and quadrature. The spatial approximation of the solution employs radial basis functions restricted to the sphere. The method allows us to construct high accuracy numerical solutions in parallel. We establish $L_2$ error estimates for smooth and nonsmooth initial data, and describe some numerical experiments.

Abstract:A numerical scheme is presented for solving the Helmholtz equation with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions on piecewise smooth open curves, where the curves may have corners and multiple junctions. Existing integral equation methods for smooth open curves rely on analyzing the exact singularities of the density at endpoints for associated integral operators, explicitly extracting these singularities from the densities in the formulation, and using global quadrature to discretize the boundary integral equation. Extending these methods to handle curves with corners and multiple junctions is challenging because the singularity analysis becomes much more complex, and constructing high-order quadrature for discretizing layer potentials with singular and hypersingular kernels and singular densities is nontrivial. The proposed scheme is built upon the following two observations. First, the single-layer potential operator and the normal derivative of the double-layer potential operator serve as effective preconditioners for each other locally. Second, the recursively compressed inverse preconditioning (RCIP) method can be extended to address "implicit" second-kind integral equations. The scheme is high-order, adaptive, and capable of handling corners and multiple junctions without prior knowledge of the density singularity. It is also compatible with fast algorithms, such as the fast multipole method. The performance of the scheme is illustrated with several numerical examples.

Abstract:In this paper we are concerned with numerical methods for Helmholtz equations with large wave numbers. We design a least squares method for discretization of the considered Helmholtz equations. In this method, an auxiliary unknown is introduced on the common interface of any two neighboring elements and a quadratic objective functional is defined by the jumps of the traces of the solutions of local Helmholtz equations across all the common interfaces, where the local Helmholtz equations are defined on elements and are imposed Robin-type boundary conditions given by the auxiliary unknowns. A minimization problem with the objective functional is proposed to determine the auxiliary unknowns. The resulting discrete system of the auxiliary unknowns is Hermitian positive definite and so it can be solved by the preconditioned conjugate gradient method. Under some assumptions we show that the generated approximate solutions possess almost the same convergence order as the plane wave methods (for the case of constant wave number). Moreover, we construct a substructuring preconditioner for the discrete system of the auxiliary unknowns. Numerical experiments show that the proposed methods are very effective and have little "wave number pollution" for the tested Helmholtz equations with large wave numbers.

Spectral solver for Cauchy problems in polar coordinates using discrete Hankel transforms

Abstract:We introduce a Fourier-Bessel-based spectral solver for Cauchy problems featuring Laplacians in polar coordinates under homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. We use FFTs in the azimuthal direction to isolate angular modes, then perform discrete Hankel transform (DHT) on each mode along the radial direction to obtain spectral coefficients. The two transforms are connected via numerical and cardinal interpolations. We analyze the boundary-dependent error bound of DHT; the worst case is $\sim N^{-3/2}$, which governs the method, and the best $\sim e^{-N}$, which then the numerical interpolation governs. The complexity is $O[N^3]$. Taking advantage of Bessel functions being the eigenfunctions of the Laplacian operator, we solve linear equations for all times. For non-linear equations, we use a time-splitting method to integrate the solutions. We show examples and validate the method on the two-dimensional wave equation, which is linear, and on two non-linear problems: a time-dependent Poiseuille flow and the flow of a Bose-Einstein condensate on a disk.

Efficient discretization of the Laplacian on complex geometries

Abstract:Highly accurate simulations of problems including second derivatives on complex geometries are of primary interest in academia and industry. Consider for example the Navier-Stokes equations or wave propagation problems of acoustic or elastic waves. Current finite difference discretization methods are accurate and efficient on modern hardware, but they lack flexibility when it comes to complex geometries. In this work I extend the continuous summation-by-parts (SBP) framework to second derivatives and combine it with spectral-type SBP operators on Gauss-Lobatto quadrature points to obtain a highly efficient discretization (accurate with respect to runtime) of the Laplacian on complex domains. The resulting Laplace operator is defined on a grid without duplicated points on the interfaces, thus removing unnecessary degrees of freedom in the scheme, and is proven to satisfy a discrete equivalent to Green's first identity. Semi-discrete stability using the new Laplace operator is proven for the acoustic wave equation in 2D. Furthermore, the method can easily be coupled together with traditional finite difference operators using glue-grid interpolation operators, resulting in a method with great practical potential. Two numerical experiments are done on the acoustic wave equation in 2D. First on a problem with an analytical solution, demonstrating the accuracy and efficiency properties of the method. Finally, a more realistic problem is solved, where a complex region of the domain is discretized using the new method and coupled to the rest of the domain discretized using a traditional finite difference method.

A Hybrid Riemann Solver for Large Hyperbolic Systems of Conservation Laws

Abstract:We are interested in the numerical solution of large systems of hyperbolic conservation laws or systems in which the characteristic decomposition is expensive to compute. Solving such equations using finite volumes or Discontinuous Galerkin requires a numerical flux function which solves local Riemann problems at cell interfaces. There are various methods to express the numerical flux function. On the one end, there is the robust but very diffusive Lax-Friedrichs solver; on the other end the upwind Godunov solver which respects all resulting waves. The drawback of the latter method is the costly computation of the eigensystem. This work presents a family of simple first order Riemann solvers, named HLLX$\omega$, which avoid solving the eigensystem. The new method reproduces all waves of the system with less dissipation than other solvers with similar input and effort, such as HLL and FORCE. The family of Riemann solvers can be seen as an extension or generalization of the methods introduced by Degond et al. \cite{DegondPeyrardRussoVilledieu1999}. We only require the same number of input values as HLL, namely the globally fastest wave speeds in both directions, or an estimate of the speeds. Thus, the new family of Riemann solvers is particularly efficient for large systems of conservation laws when the spectral decomposition is expensive to compute or no explicit expression for the eigensystem is available.

Abstract:We present a novel application of the recently developed AAA algorithm to the solution of Laplace 2D problems; an application to conformal mapping is also shown as a particular case. These classes of problems have also been addressed by means of dedicated software implementations based on rational function approximation, with unprecedented speed and accuracy. Still we show how the AAA algorithm, conceived to be a flexible and domain independent method, is capable of addressing these situations within a unified framework.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to derive analytical solutions of fractional order Laplace, Poisson and Helmholtz equations in two variables derived from the corresponding standard equations in two dimensions by replacing the integer order partial derivatives with fractional Riesz-Feller derivative and generalized Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative recently defined by Hilfer. The Fourier-Laplace transform method is employed to obtain the solutions in terms of Mittag-Leffler functions, Fox $H$-function and an integral operator containing a Mittag-Leffler function in the kernel. Results for fractional wave equation are presented as well. Some interesting special cases of these equations are considered. Asymptotic behavior and series representation of solutions are analyzed in detail. Many previously obtained results can be derived as special cases of those presented in this paper.

High-Order Nyström/Convolution-Quadrature Solution of Time-Domain Scattering from Closed and Open Lipschitz Boundaries with Dirichlet and Neumann Boundary Conditions

Abstract:We investigate high-order Convolution Quadratures methods for the solution of the wave equation in unbounded domains in two dimensions that rely on Nyström discretizations for the solution of the ensemble of associated Laplace domain modified Helmholtz problems. We consider two classes of CQ discretizations, one based on linear multistep methods and the other based on Runge-Kutta methods, in conjunction with Nyström discretizations based on Alpert and QBX quadratures of Boundary Integral Equation (BIE) formulations of the Laplace domain Helmholtz problems with complex wavenumbers. We present a variety of accuracy tests that showcase the high-order in time convergence (up to and including fifth order) that the Nyström CQ discretizations are capable of delivering for a variety of two dimensional scatterers and types of boundary conditions.

Abstract:Solving time-harmonic wave propagation problems by iterative methods is a difficult task, and over the last two decades an important research effort has gone into developing preconditioners for the simplest representative of such wave propagation problems, the Helmholtz equation. A specific class of these new preconditioners is considered here. They were developed by researchers with various backgrounds using formulations and notations that are very different, and all are among the most promising preconditioners for the Helmholtz equation. \indent The goal of the present article is to show that this class of preconditioners is based on a common mathematical principle, and that they can all be formulated in the context of domain decomposition methods known as optimized Schwarz methods. This common formulation allows us to explain in detail how and why all these methods work. The domain decomposition formulation also allows us to avoid technicalities in the implementation description we give of these recent methods. \indent The equivalence of these methods with optimized Schwarz methods translates at the discrete level into equivalence with approximate block LU decomposition preconditioners, and in each case we give the algebraic version, including a detailed description of the approximations used. While we choose to use the Helmholtz equation for which these methods were developed, our notation is completely general and the algorithms we give are written for an arbitrary second-order elliptic operator. The algebraic versions are even more general, assuming only a connectivity pattern in the discretization matrix. \indent All the new methods studied here are based on sequential decomposition of the problem in space into a sequence of subproblems, and they have in their optimal form the property to lead to nilpotent iterations, like an exact block LU factorization. Using our domain decomposition formulation, we finally present an algorithm for two-dimensional decompositions, i.e., decompositions that contain cross points, which is still nilpotent in its optimal form. Its approximation is currently an active area of research, and it would have been difficult to discover such an algorithm without the domain decomposition framework.

Abstract:The Navier equation is the governing equation of elastic waves, and computing its solution accurately and rapidly has a wide range of applications in geophysical exploration, materials science, etc. In this paper, we focus on the efficient and high-precision numerical algorithm for the time harmonic elastic wave scattering problems from cornered domains via the boundary integral equations in two dimensions. The approach is based on the combination of Nyström discretization, analytical singular integrals and kernel-splitting method, which results in a high-order solver for smooth boundaries. It is then combined with the recursively compressed inverse preconditioning (RCIP) method to solve elastic scattering problems from cornered domains. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves high accuracy, with stabilized errors close to machine precision in various geometric configurations. The algorithm is further applied to investigate the asymptotic behavior of density functions associated with boundary integral operators near corners, and the numerical results are highly consistent with the theoretical formulas.

Abstract:An efficient and accurate algorithm for solving Helmholtz equation in 1-D is presented in this paper. The key point of this work is to derive the analytic form for the convolution of the Green's function and a complex exponential function with a finite support domain. A linear subtraction skill is introduced to improve the sampling efficiency. Therefore, the convolution of any function with the Green's function is given in a semi-analytic form, which can be computed in a fast way with the help of FFT or NUFFT.

Abstract:Laplace- and Helmholtz-type boundary value problems with singularities are considered. A sequence of approximations to the exact boundary conditions at an artificial boundary is given. Then the original problem is reduced to a boundary value problem in a domain away from the singularities. Furthermore, finite-element approximations are applied to this problem and error estimates are obtained. Finally, some numerical examples show the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:We present a fast and accurate algorithm to solve Poisson problems in complex geometries, using regular Cartesian grids. We consider a variety of configurations, including Poisson problems with interfaces across which the solution is discontinuous (of the type arising in multi-fluid flows). The algorithm is based on a combination of the Correction Function Method (CFM) and Boundary Integral Methods (BIM). Interface and boundary conditions can be treated in a fast and accurate manner using boundary integral equations, and the associated BIM. Unfortunately, BIM can be costly when the solution is needed everywhere in a grid, e.g. fluid flow problems. We use the CFM to circumvent this issue. The solution from the BIM is used to rewrite the problem as a series of Poisson problems in rectangular domains—which requires the BIM solution at interfaces/boundaries only. These Poisson problems involve discontinuities at interfaces, of the type that the CFM can handle. Hence we use the CFM to solve them (to high order of accuracy) with finite differences and a Fast Fourier Transform based fast Poisson solver. We present 2-D examples of the algorithm applied to Poisson problems involving complex geometries, including cases in which the solution is discontinuous. We show that the algorithm produces solutions that converge with either 3rd or 4th order of accuracy, depending on the type of boundary condition and solution discontinuity.

An interface formulation of the Laplace-Beltrami problem on piecewise smooth surfaces

Abstract:The Laplace-Beltrami problem on closed surfaces embedded in three dimensions arises in many areas of physics, including molecular dynamics (surface diffusion), electromagnetics (harmonic vector fields), and fluid dynamics (vesicle deformation). In particular, the Hodge decomposition of vector fields tangent to a surface can be computed by solving a sequence of Laplace-Beltrami problems. Such decompositions are very important in magnetostatic calculations and in various plasma and fluid flow problems. In this work we develop $L^2$-invertibility theory for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on piecewise smooth surfaces, extending earlier weak formulations and integral equation approaches on smooth surfaces. Furthermore, we reformulate the weak form of the problem as an interface problem with continuity conditions across edges of adjacent piecewise smooth panels of the surface. We then provide high-order numerical examples along surfaces of revolution to support our analysis, and discuss numerical extensions to general surfaces embedded in three dimensions.

High Order Accurate Hermite Schemes on Curvilinear Grids with Compatibility Boundary Conditions

Abstract:High order accurate Hermite methods for the wave equation on curvilinear domains are presented. Boundaries are treated using centered compatibility conditions rather than more standard one-sided approximations. Both first-order-in-time (FOT) and second-order-in-time (SOT) Hermite schemes are developed. Hermite methods use the solution and multiple derivatives as unknowns and achieve space-time orders of accuracy $2m-1$ (FOT) and $2m$ (SOT) for methods using $(m+1)^d$ degree of freedom per node in $d$ dimensions. The compatibility boundary conditions (CBCs) are based on taking time derivatives of the boundary conditions and using the governing equations to replace the time derivatives with spatial derivatives. These resulting constraint equations augment the Hermite scheme on the boundary. The solvability of the equations resulting from the compatibility conditions are analyzed. Numerical examples demonstrate the accuracy and stability of the new schemes in two dimensions.
