Abstract:AbstractLeaf functional traits have attracted the attention of ecologists for several decades, but few studies have systematically assessed leaf morphological traits (termed “economic traits”), stomatal (termed “hydraulic”), and anatomical traits of entire forest communities, thus it is unclear whether their relationships are consistent among trees, shrubs, and herbs, and which anatomical traits should be assigned to economical or hydraulic traits. In this study, we collected leaf samples of 106 plant species in temperate forests and 164 plant species in subtropical forests and determined nine key functional traits. We found that functional traits differed between temperate and subtropical forests. Leaf traits also differed between different plant functional groups, irrespective of forest type; dry matter content, stomatal density, and cell tense ratio followed the order trees > shrubs > herbs, whereas specific leaf area and sponginess ratio showed the opposite pattern. The correlations of leaf traits were not consistent among trees, shrubs, and herbs, which may reflect different adaptive strategies. Principal component analysis indicated that leaf economics and hydraulic traits were uncoupled in temperate and subtropical forests, and correlations of anatomical traits and economic and hydraulic traits were weak, indicating anatomical traits should be emphasized in future studies.

Relationships between soil nutrient status and nutrient-related leaf traits in Brazilian cerrado and seasonal forest communities

Abstract:AimsIn Brazil, cerrado and seasonal forest occur in close proximity but on soils with very different chemistry and texture. We aimed to compare species from these two vegetation types in terms of leaf N and P concentrations (of green and senesced leaves) and proportional nutrient resorption, quantifying the relationships among these traits, with other key leaf traits, and with soil properties.MethodsWe collected topsoil at 100 25 m2 sample plots in south-eastern Brazil and measured leaf traits of 89 woody species occurring therein, expressing them as community-weighted means. Soil nutrient status was indexed using eight standard variables.ResultsIn terms of properties such as pH, clay content, and cation exchange capacity, cerrado soils were deemed as being less “fertile” than forest soils, yet cerrado and forest sites did not differ in soil total N or available P (which themselves were negatively correlated). On average, forest species showed higher proportional P resorption but lower N resorption. Leaves with higher nutrient concentrations were less scleromorphic.ConclusionIn Brazilian cerrado and forests, variation in green- and senesced-leaf nutrients was better aligned with generalised measures of soil fertility than with total N or available P and showed far more clear patterns than nutrient resorption efficiencies.

Abstract:Abstract Due to massive energetic investments in woody support structures, trees are subject to unique physiological, mechanical, and ecological pressures not experienced by herbaceous plants. Despite a wealth of studies exploring trait relationships across the entire plant kingdom, the dominant traits underpinning these unique aspects of tree form and function remain unclear. Here, by considering 18 functional traits, encompassing leaf, seed, bark, wood, crown, and root characteristics, we quantify the multidimensional relationships in tree trait expression. We find that nearly half of trait variation is captured by two axes: one reflecting leaf economics, the other reflecting tree size and competition for light. Yet these orthogonal axes reveal strong environmental convergence, exhibiting correlated responses to temperature, moisture, and elevation. By subsequently exploring multidimensional trait relationships, we show that the full dimensionality of trait space is captured by eight distinct clusters, each reflecting a unique aspect of tree form and function. Collectively, this work identifies a core set of traits needed to quantify global patterns in functional biodiversity, and it contributes to our fundamental understanding of the functioning of forests worldwide.

Abstract:The relationships among leaf traits often reflect plant adaptation for coping with nutrient resources. However, the seasonal variations in leaf traits and their relationship with soil nutrients are not well understood. We sampled seven major functional traits of thirty trees and nine shrubs (sorted into different plant functional groups, PFGs, based on their growth form, leaf lifespan, and leaf shape) at different seasons in a managed forest plantation of Southeastern China. Both green leaf nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations (Ngreen and Pgreen) decreased significantly from spring and summer to autumn, and varied significantly with PFGs (P < 0.05) at different times of the year. Across all plants, specific leaf area correlated positively with Ngreen and Pgreen in spring, summer, and winter, but not in autumn; N resorption proficiency generally correlated positively with Ngreen in each season, while P resorption efficiency correlated positively with Pgreen in spring and summer, but not in autumn and winter. Soil nitrogen availability correlated negatively with leaf nutrient traits in some seasons. In conclusion, leaf trait relationships varied among the seasons and among PFGs. Seasonal dynamics of leaf traits as well as soil nutrients’ relations must be considered when exploring plant feedback to soil nutrients.

Soil nutrients and water availability are strong drivers of tropical tree species distribution across scales. However, the physiological mechanisms underlying environmental filtering along these gradients remain incompletely understood. Previous studies mostly focused on univariate variation in structural traits, but a more integrative approach combining multiple physiological traits is needed to fully portray species functional strategies. We measured nine leaf functional traits related to trees' resource capture and hydraulic strategies for 552 individuals belonging to 21 tropical tree species across an environmental gradient in Amazonian forests. Our sampling included generalist and specialist species from terra firme (TF) and seasonally flooded (SF) forests. We tested the influence of the topographic wetness index, a proxy for soil moisture and nutrient gradients, on each trait separately and on the trait integration through multivariate indices computed from the eigenvalues of a principal component analysis on the traits of the species. Finally, we evaluated intraspecific trait variability (ITV) for generalists and specialists by calculating the coefficient of variation for each trait. Results showed that (1) the environment had a greater influence on trait syndromes than single trait variation. Moreover, (2) SF specialist species expressed a stronger leaf trait coordination than TF specialist species. Furthermore, (3) the ability of generalist species to occupy a broader range of environments was not reflected by a larger ITV than specialist species but by the capacity to change trait coordination across environments. Our work highlights the need to investigate functional strategies as multidimensional syndromes in physiological trait space to fully understand and predict species distribution along environmental gradients. Abstract:Abstract The link between functional traits and changes in the environment are challenging, especially in systems of high diversity, such as transitional regions between savannas and tropical forests that are considered unstable and highly vulnerable to climate change. Here we evaluate a series of anatomical traits, key morphological traits, and nutrient concentration for the most representative woody species of four vegetation types (i.e. semideciduous seasonal forest, transition forest, typical cerrado and rocky cerrado ) in the Amazonia-Cerrado transition. Our aim was to understand how trees respond to the distinct and unique environmental conditions in each area. Overall, species growing in closed-canopy environments exhibited acquisitive strategies (i.e., higher leaf water content and higher specific leaf area). On the other hand, species from open-canopy environments have adopted conservative strategies (i.e., higher leaf thickness and higher trichomes density). These differences represent a divergence in the adaptive strategies of woody species of the Amazonia-Cerrado transition and are important indicators of how vegetation can respond to future climate change and water availability. Despite these differences, stomatal density and leaf nutrient concentration at a mass basis was surprisingly similar across trees from all vegetation types, suggesting some common environmental drivers, such as likely similar nutrient limitation and climate seasonality.
Relationships among the leaf traits in temperate forest tree species in Uttarakhand, India

Abstract:Abstract Background: The primary function of the leaf is the production of the food and interchange the gases between the atmosphere and the plant surface. Establishing the relationship among the leaf traits is essential to understand the ecosystem functioning in the forest ecosystem. Here, the present study proposes a framework for species-level relationships between the traits in the temperate forest ecosystem. Methodology: Three morphological (leaf area, specific leaf area and leaf dry matter content), three chemical (leaf carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous content) and six physiological (chlorophyll, photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, intrinsic water use efficiency, transpiration rate, intercellular CO 2 concentration) leaf traits were analysed in 10 woody tree species of temperate forest using linear mixed modelling. Results: Results showed that the leaf carbon was the only trait influencing the most to leaf area, specific leaf area and leaf dry matter content and leads to maximum variation in the functioning of the forest ecosystem. Conclusion: The results suggested that consideration of plant traits, and especially the leaf traits, increases the ability to describe variation in the functioning of the forest ecosystem. This study indicated that leaf carbon act as the significant predictor of leaf trait variation among the different species in the temperate forest ecosystem of the Indian Himalayan region.
Low predictability of energy balance traits and leaf temperature metrics in desert, montane and alpine plant communities

Abstract:<ol class=""><li>Leaf energy balance may influence plant performance and community composition. While biophysical theory can link leaf energy balance to many traits and environment variables, predicting leaf temperature and key driver traits with incomplete parameterizations remains challenging. Predicting thermal offsets (δ, Tleaf – Tair difference) or thermal coupling strengths (β, Tleaf vs. Tair slope) is challenging. </li><li>We ask: 1) whether environmental gradients predict variation in energy balance traits (absorptance, leaf angle, stomatal distribution, maximum stomatal conductance, leaf area, leaf height); 2) whether commonly‐measured leaf functional traits (dry matter content, mass per area, nitrogen fraction, δ13C, height above ground) predict energy balance traits; and 3) how traits and environmental variables predict δ and β among species. </li><li>We address these questions with diurnal measurements of 41 species co‐occurring along an 1100 m elevation gradient spanning desert to alpine biomes. We show that 1) energy balance traits are only weakly associated with environmental gradients, and 2) are not well predicted by common functional traits. We also show that 3) δ and β can be partially approximated using interactions among site environment and traits, with a much larger role for environment than traits. The heterogeneity in leaf temperature metrics and energy balance traits challenges larger‐scale predictive models of plant performance under environmental change. </li></ol>

Soil fertility and water availability effects on trait dispersion and phylogenetic relatedness of tropical terrestrial ferns

Abstract:Analysis of plant functional traits and their phylogenetic relationships has shed light on the processes structuring the occurrence patterns of angiosperm taxa across environmental gradients. In montane tropical forests, angiosperms coexist with diverse communities of terrestrial ferns, with distinct evolutionary histories, leaf morphology, and reproductive systems. Here we examined the functional traits, functional dispersion, and phylogenetic diversity of ferns across a well-described gradient of moisture and soil nutrient availability in a premontane tropical rainforest in western Panama. We measured 15 functional traits from 33 terrestrial fern species occurring in 12 one-ha plots. We applied RLQ and fourth-corner analyses to assess relationships between trait and environmental variables and used beta regression to evaluate how functional dispersion responds to environmental factors. In addition, we analyzed trait distributions with respect to fern phylogeny. We found that functional composition was predicted by soil variables and dry season rainfall. Leaf phosphorus (P) increased and leaf carbon (C) to nitrogen (N) ratio decreased with increasing soil total N:P ratio. Functional dispersion decreased with increasing soil total N:P in wet sites and with increasing manganese in dry sites, suggesting that low soil fertility and dry season moisture stress both tend to reduce functional diversity. Traits exhibited phylogenetic clustering primarily at deep nodes associated with tree versus herbaceous fern clades. Our results indicate that environmental filtering of functional traits affects ferns in a similar way to angiosperms and highlight the association of the early tree fern clade with low fertility soils.

Abstract:Intraspecific trait variation is a key feature that enables species to occur in heterogeneous landscapes. We studied Clusia grandiflora and Anacardium occidentale traits over a forest–dune gradient on the Brazilian Amazon coast ( restinga ). C. grandiflora showed a drought-avoidance strategy, storing water in its leaves, whereas A. occidentale showed conservative resource use in leaves, evidenced by its high dry-matter content and acquisitive resource in wood, showing lower wood density. Only A. occidentale changed its trait values through the forest–dune gradient, showing more conservative leaves in dunes and shrublands, despite a lower wood density than in forest. Leaf and wood traits are likely to be decoupled among Amazon coastal trees and their responses to environmental gradients are species-specific.

Abstract:Earth system models are incorporating plant trait diversity into their land components to better predict vegetation dynamics in a changing climate. However, extant plant trait distributions will not allow extrapolations to novel community assemblages in future climates, which will require a mechanistic understanding of the trade-offs that determine trait diversity. In this study, we show how physiological trade-offs involving leaf mass per unit area (LMA), leaf lifespan, leaf nitrogen, and leaf respiration may explain the distribution patterns of evergreen and deciduous trees in the temperate and boreal zones based on (1) an evolutionary analysis of a simple mathematical model and (2) simulation experiments of an individual-based dynamic vegetation model (i.e., LM3-PPA). The evolutionary analysis shows that these leaf traits set up a trade-off between carbon- and nitrogen-use efficiency at the scale of individual trees and therefore determine competitively dominant leaf strategies. As soil nitrogen availability increases, the dominant leaf strategy switches from one that is high in nitrogen-use efficiency to one that is high in carbon-use efficiency or, equivalently, from high-LMA/long-lived leaves (i.e., evergreen) to low-LMA/short-lived leaves (i.e., deciduous). In a region of intermediate soil nitrogen availability, the dominant leaf strategy may be either deciduous or evergreen depending on the initial conditions of plant trait abundance (i.e., founder controlled) due to feedbacks of leaf traits on soil nitrogen mineralization through litter quality. Simulated successional patterns by LM3-PPA from the leaf physiological trade-offs are consistent with observed successional dynamics of evergreen and deciduous forests at three sites spanning the temperate to boreal zones.

Do leaf traits shape herbivory in tropical montane rainforests? A multispecies approach

Abstract:The co‐evolutionary arms race between herbivores and plants forces plants to evolve protection strategies that reduce the palatability of the plant modules attacked by the herbivores. These characteristics of traits have consequences for both the survival of plant individuals and the composition of plant communities. Thus, correlating traits of for instance leaves with herbivory is an important step toward understanding the dynamics of plant populations and communities. Traits can either be measured using conventional lab methods or recently developed spectral sensing techniques. We examined whether leaf traits of trees are related to herbivory in a multispecies approach. Furthermore, we explored whether leaf traits characterized by spectral sensing provide similar relations to herbivory as lab‐based leaf traits. We established nine 1‐ha square plots evenly distributed over three different forest types in Ecuadorian tropical montane rainforests where we estimated herbivory as the leaf area loss (in square centimeters) of 20 (±5) leaves sampled from the canopies of 380 tree individuals belonging to 51 tree species (7 ± 1 individuals/species) using lab‐ and spectral‐sensing‐based methods. For each methodological approach, we ran 100 linear mixed‐effects models with all respective leaf traits as predictor and herbivory as response variables for data subsets containing one randomly selected tree individual of each species to estimate the range of the regression coefficients for each trait. Automated stepwise backward selections determined the frequency of each trait having an important influence on herbivory. We found no clear relations between leaf traits and herbivory for neither lab‐ nor spectral‐sensing‐based traits. A nested variance component analysis demonstrated that the observed variability was mainly due to the variation in trait concentrations between tree individuals of a species. Our results suggest that snapshot data lead to a mismatch between herbivory and the concentrations of traits during the peak of herbivory. Another explanation could be that environmental conditions or processes along the food web are more important in structuring herbivory than leaf traits.

Abstract:Leaf economics and hydraulic traits are critical to leaf photosynthesis, yet it is debated whether these two sets of traits vary in a fully coordinated manner or there is room for independent variation. Here, we tested the relationship between leaf economics traits, including leaf nitrogen concentration and leaf dry mass per area, and leaf hydraulic traits including stomatal density and vein density in five tropical-subtropical forests. Surprisingly, these two suites of traits were statistically decoupled. This decoupling suggests that independent trait dimensions exist within a leaf, with leaf economics dimension corresponding to light capture and tissue longevity, and the hydraulic dimension to water-use and leaf temperature maintenance. Clearly, leaf economics and hydraulic traits can vary independently, thus allowing for more possible plant trait combinations. Compared with a single trait dimension, multiple trait dimensions may better enable species adaptations to multifarious niche dimensions, promote diverse plant strategies and facilitate species coexistence.

Accounting for the underlying mechanisms driving plant functional trait variation is important for understanding the potential rate of change of ecosystems since trait acclimation via phenotypic plasticity is very fast compared to shifts in community composition and genetic adaptation. We here applied a statistical technique to decompose the relative roles of phenotypic plasticity, genetic adaptation, and phylogenetic constraints. We examined typically obtained plant functional traits, such as wood density, plant height, specific leaf area, leaf area, leaf thickness, leaf dry mass content, leaf nitrogen content, and leaf phosphorus content. We assumed that genetic differences in plant functional traits between species and genotypes increase with environmental heterogeneity and geographic distance, whereas trait variation due to plastic acclimation to the local environment is independent of spatial distance between sampling sites. Results suggest that most of the observed trait variation could not be explained by the measured environmental variables, thus indicating a limited potential to predict individual plant traits from commonly assessed parameters. However, we found a difference in the response of plant functional traits, such that leaf traits varied in response to canopy‐light regime and nutrient availability, whereas wood traits were related to topoedaphic factors and water availability. Our analysis furthermore revealed differences in the functional response of coexisting neotropical tree species, which suggests that endemic species with conservative ecological strategies might be especially prone to competitive exclusion under projected climate change.

Abstract:Bringing together leaf trait data spanning 2,548 species and 175 sites we describe, for the first time at global scale, a universal spectrum of leaf economics consisting of key chemical, structural and physiological properties. The spectrum runs from quick to slow return on investments of nutrients and dry mass in leaves, and operates largely independently of growth form, plant functional type or biome. Categories along the spectrum would, in general, describe leaf economic variation at the global scale better than plant functional types, because functional types overlap substantially in their leaf traits. Overall, modulation of leaf traits and trait relationships by climate is surprisingly modest, although some striking and significant patterns can be seen. Reliable quantification of the leaf economics spectrum and its interaction with climate will prove valuable for modelling nutrient fluxes and vegetation boundaries under changing land-use and climate.

Abstract:Leaf anatomical traits are responsive to environmental factors and thus highly plastic in their development and biochemical function. However, how they vary across large geographical scales and the main driving factors remain unclear, especially for forest plants. Here, by combining field sampling with plant semi-thin sectioning methods, eight anatomical traits (including leaf epidermis and mesophyll traits, leaf midrib and vascular traits) that can fully reflect leaf structure were measured in 60 plant species inhabiting eight forests in eastern China, and their geographical patterns and possible determinants were explored. Our results showed that leaf anatomical traits varied significantly among different plant functional types (PFTs), and phylogeny had a negligible effect on them. At the species level, leaf anatomical traits exhibited significant geographical patterns, and the thickness of leaf tissues tended to increase from boreal to tropical forests. Compared to leaf epidermis and mesophyll traits, leaf midrib and vascular traits showed similar and more significant geographical patterns. Moreover, the spatial variations in leaf anatomical traits were mainly determined by the shifts in PFTs, while climate and soil nutrient availability had relatively marginal effects. Our findings emphasized that leaf anatomical trait coordination could reflect the resource trade-off and utilization strategies of plants, which is expected to improve our understanding of the responses and adaptation mechanisms of plants to environmental changes.
Leaf physiological response to light environment of three tree fern species in a Mexican cloud forest

Abstract:Abstract: Abundance and physiology of three understorey tree fern species were compared in a Mexican cloud forest. We hypothesized that the distribution of species would be associated with canopy openness and leaf physiological characteristics. In gullies (1–2% full sun), Alsophila firma was abundant, Cyathea divergens was distributed in moderately open places (4–9%), and Lophosoria quadripinnata preferred more open canopy (9–30%). Although 11 leaf traits of five plants of each species growing under closed and open canopies over 1 y did not differ within species, there were significant interspecific differences. Alsophila firma had comparatively low maximum electron transport rate ETR max (26.8 ± 1.81 μmol m −2 s −1 ) and ETR light saturation point (ETR LSP : 261 ± 36.1 μmol m −2 s −1 ), high specific leaf area (SLA), thin leaves and decreased quantum yield during a leaf desiccation experiment. Cyathea divergens had relatively high maximum quantum yield (0.84 ± 0.004), ETR max (37.3 ± 1.8 μmol m −2 s −1 ) and ETR LSP (409 ± 40.0 μmol m −2 s −1 ). Lophosoria quadripinnata had comparatively thick leaves, low SLA, high predawn water potential, high density (606 ± 25.5 mm −2 ) and small length (0.026 ± 0.002 mm) stomata. The results support the hypothesis that light sensitivity shapes tree fern distribution in the cloud forest.

Abstract:Plants vary in their capacity to absorb atmospheric sourced water through their leaves (i.e., foliar water uptake, FWU). Here, we reveal the main foliar traits responsible for interspecific differences in FWU, and also discuss the implications of our findings for plants' responses to future drier conditions. Questions Plants largely vary in their capacity for foliar water uptake (FWU), that is, the capacity to increase leaf water content by directly absorbing water from leaf‐wetting events. Climate change will reduce leaf wetting and increase drought events. Therefore, we need a better understanding of the underlying traits and mechanisms that facilitate FWU. Location Seasonally dry tropical montane grasslands in Brazil (Campos de Altitude). Methods We measured FWU and leaf traits related to wettability, surface conductance, water potential and water storage on up to 55 plant species. By using Direct Acyclic Graph theory and Bayesian modelling, we tested how those leaf traits affect FWU. Results We found that stomatal conductance largely explained interspecific variation in FWU, which was also favoured in species with hydrophilic leaves, high cuticular conductance, more negative leaf water potentials, low dry‐matter content, isohydric behaviour, and more elastic cell walls. Conclusions Due to the existence of trade‐offs, not all species exhibit an optimal combination of traits that favours FWU. Instead, co‐occurring species have achieved a similar capacity for FWU through distinct trait combinations. Consequently, species engaged in FWU may exhibit differential vulnerabilities to climate change as they can cope with drought using other strategies beside FWU.

Abstract:Recent investigations have revealed the coordination and trade-offs between above- and belowground traits in structuring functional strategies of plant communities, but none of these have addressed ferns, a diverse plant lineage in tropical forests. We investigated terrestrial ferns from the perspective of how below- and aboveground traits are coordinated with functional responses to forest edges, which represent a significant part of the world's forest cover. Specifically, we examined differences in functional strategies between forest edges and forest interior as well as traits associated with species dominance. Fern richness and abundance were sampled in 24 edge plots and 44 interior plots within the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We obtained data for five leaf traits and three rhizome traits. Ferns did not express any functional coordination between above- and belowground traits. At the edge, ferns did not display functional homogenization. In both the interior and at the edge, ferns exhibited multiple trait covariations across a broad spectrum of plant sizes and leaf numbers, associated with rhizome type and the presence of leaf trichomes and stolons. There were no cohesive functional groups of generalists or of exclusive species of forest edges and the forest interior. Fern species dominance was related to the species-specific number of leaves and the presence of stolons. We conclude that below- and aboveground traits did neither respond in conjunction nor as a functional response to edge effects. However, both kinds of traits affected the functional structure and species dominance of fern communities at the edge and in the interior of the forest.
