Abstract:Devanagari script is the most widely used script in India and other Asian countries. There is a rich collection of ancient Devanagari manuscripts, which is a wealth of knowledge. To make these manuscripts available to people, efforts are being done to digitize these documents. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) plays an important role in recognizing these documents. Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is a powerful model that is giving very promising results in the field of character recognition, pattern recognition etc. CNN has never been used for the recognition of the Devanagari ancient manuscripts. Our aim in the proposed work is to use the power of CNN for extracting the wealth of knowledge from Devanagari handwritten ancient manuscripts. In addition, we aim is to experiment with various design options like number of layes, stride size, number of filters, kenel size and different functions in various layers and to select the best of these. In this paper, the authors have proposed to use deep learning model as a feature extractor as well as a classifier for the recognition of 33 classes of basic characters of Devanagari ancient manuscripts. A dataset containing 5484 characters has been used for the experimental work. Various experiments show that the accuracy achieved using CNN as a feature extractor is better than other state-of-the-art techniques. The recognition accuracy of 93.73% has been achieved by using the model proposed in this paper for Devanagari ancient character recognition.

Abstract:An optical character recognition (OCR) system segments the character from the given document before recognizing it. The recognition of such character images requires the class labels to be associated with each character sample in the training set, and this requires the placing of all the samples of each segmented character in various distinct folders. However, it has to be done manually, and thus, it is a time-consuming process. The ancient documents suffer from humidity spots, ink stains, and faded portions of text which makes the character recognition task even more challenging for the ancient documents. The present article proposes a novel semi-self-supervised learning-based OCR method to recognize each character segmented from the ancient documents handwritten in Devanagari and Maithili scripts. The proposed method has two modules—feature extraction module and recognition module. The feature extraction module has extracted deep hierarchical features from each pre-segmented character image employing generative self-supervised learning approach. The recognition module has focused on important features using an attention mechanism and learns the long temporal sequence using the Gated Recurrent Unit variant of recurrent neural network classifier to classify each segmented character into its proper class. The feature extraction module in the proposed method has been trained using the 60% (unlabelled) of the dataset, whereas the recognition module has been trained using the 5% (manually labelled) of the dataset. The performance of the proposed novel OCR method has been evaluated on two self-generated datasets of ancient handwritten documents in Devanagari and Maithili scripts. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed OCR method outperforms the state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods in this regard. The proposed OCR method has improved the character recognition accuracy in comparison with the SOTA methods by 2.27% and 3.48% in Devanagari and Maithili scripts, respectively.

Abstract:Optical character recognition (OCR) is a technology that allows you to convert different types of documents or images into searchable, editable, and analyzable data. The current work on Sanskrit Character Recognition from Images of Text Documents is one of the most difficult due to similarities in the forms of unique letters, script complexity, non-forte in the representation, and a vast number of symbols. The Devanagari script is used to write the Sanskrit language. There are a variety of approaches for recognizing characters in a scanned image. The present research initiatives highlight the importance and needs of efforts in recognition of printed and handwritten documents written in Sanskrit language. This paper is aims at reviewing the state of various scripts in use including those from medieval to present era and explores the prospective of digital recognition of printed texts and thereby pointing towards futuristic trends in developing restoration software for Sanskrit scripts. Challenge is due to the number of languages and their diverse scripts. The scarcity of digitized linguistic resources makes the task a tougher one. The paper also highlights on the characteristics and challenges of recognition of scripts of Sanskrit origin. Largely the digital recognition is limited to simple numerals and isolated characters. In addition, this review article serves the purpose an optical character recognition (OCR) system that enables to analyse the word recognition and translate various types of Sanskrit documents or images into text using deep learning architectures which include Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Bidirectional long-short term memory (Bidirectional LSTM).

Abstract:English Character Recognition (CR) has been extensively studied in the last half century and progressed to a level, sufficient to produce technology driven applications. But same is not the case for Indian languages which are complicated in terms of structure and computations. Rapidly growing computational power may enable the implementation of Indic CR methodologies. Digital document processing is gaining popularity for application to office and library automation, bank and postal services, publishing houses and communication technology. Devnagari being the national language of India, spoken by more than 500 million people, should be given special attention so that document retrieval and analysis of rich ancient and modern Indian literature can be effectively done. This article is intended to serve as a guide and update for the readers, working in the Devnagari Optical Character Recognition (DOCR) area. An overview of DOCR systems is presented and the available DOCR techniques are reviewed. The current status of DOCR is discussed and directions for future research are suggested.

Abstract:This study aims to develop a character recognition system for the MODI language, which is challenging due to the complexity of character identification. The proposed system uses convolutional neural networks (CNN) and the VGG16 algorithm to accurately identify printed and handwritten MODI characters from scanned papers, regardless of the input paper quality. The training dataset consists of 48 distinct MODI script characters, including vowels and consonants, and is routinely updated with handwritten samples obtained from various sources and the IEEE DataPort dataset. The study demonstrates the feasibility of developing a highly accurate character recognition system that follows the established method of the MODI Script Character Recognizer System (MSCR).

Abstract:This paper describes a new feature set, called the extended directional features (EDF) for use in the recognition of online handwritten strokes. We use EDF specifically to recognize strokes that form a basis for producing Devanagari script, which is the most widely used Indian language script. It should be noted that stroke recognition in handwritten script is equivalent to phoneme recognition in speech signals and is generally very poor and of the order of 20% for singing voice. Experiments are conducted for the automatic recognition of isolated handwritten strokes. Initially we describe the proposed feature set, namely EDF and then show how this feature can be effectively utilized for writer independent script recognition through stroke recognition. Experimental results show that the extended directional feature set performs well with about 65+% stroke level recognition accuracy for writer independent data set.

Ancient manuscripts can be found in handwritten form, thus they must be translated into digital form so that computing equipment can access them and additional indexing and search operations can be performed with ease. Manuscript recognition is already possible using a variety of methods. Regional languages like Devanagari, Gurmukhi, Sanskrit, etc., however, have very few methods available. In this study, the Devanagari characters from the manuscripts is recognised using a CapsNet-based method. 33 fundamental characters, 3 conjuncts, and 12 modifiers make up the Devanagari alphabet. The complete dataset is divided into 399 classes for the recognition of basic, modifiers, and conjunct characters. Due to spatial relationship, CapsNet is used to recognize the handwritten characters. The proposed model was run using 10:70, 20:80, and 30:70 as test: train ratio of characters. Also, the number of epochs was varied for better recognition accuracy. The authors observed the best recognition accuracy of 94.6% was achieved to recognize the Devanagari characters using CapsNet.

Abstract:Transliteration involves transformation of one script to another based on phonetic similarities between the characters of two distinctive scripts. In this paper, we present a novel technique for automatic transliteration of Devanagari script using character recognition. One of the first tasks performed to isolate the constituent characters is segmentation. Line segmentation methodology in this manuscript discusses the case of overlapping lines. Character segmentation algorithm is designed to segment conjuncts and separate shadow characters. Presented shadow character segmentation scheme employs connected component method to isolate the character, keeping the constituent characters intact. Statistical features namely different order moments like area, variance, skewness and kurtosis along with structural features of characters are employed in two phase recognition process. After recognition, constituent Devanagari characters are mapped to corresponding roman alphabets in way that resulting roman alphabets have similar pronunciation to source characters.

Abstract:Recognizing Vedic Sanskrit text is essential for accessing classical Indo-Aryan language, predominantly utilized in the Vedas. Currently, there is limited awareness about the Vedas, making this field a highly demanding and challenging area in pattern recognition. To accelerate progress in optical character recognition (OCR), deep learning methods are indispensable. This article presents a novel approach to Vedic Sanskrit text recognition, incorporating deep convolutional architectures with their respective interpretations. We introduce three modified 4-fold CNN architectures and the AlexNet model. Our system comprises a handwritten dataset containing 140 distinct Vedic Sanskrit words, with approximately 500 images per word, totaling around 70,000 images. The dataset is partitioned for training and testing in an 80:20 ratio. Training is conducted using 20% of the samples, and the resulting model is applied to the deep convolutional network with varied sets of neurons in their hidden layers. Our proposed method demonstrates robust support for accurate Vedic Sanskrit word classification. The recognition rate achieved in our research is 97.42%, with an average recognition time of 0.3640 milliseconds, surpassing existing CNN-based approaches.

Abstract:Multilingual character recognition from the images of aged Indian documents is challenging because of the complex character grapheme of the Indian language scripts. Feature extraction plays the most important role in recognition of such images. In this paper, we have proposed a set of feature vectors (FVs) which are based on shape geometry (SG) decoding of the input character. The first FV is based on SG decoding of the input character using triangular area (TA) calculation. The second FV, namely, SG using perpendicular distance is extracted by dividing the input image into individual components and the shape of the individual component is decoded into shape symbols by comparing the normalized perpendicular distances of the individual pixels of the component onto the line joining the end points of the component. Apart from the proposed FVs, we have used crossing count features. These FVs are represented as the string of shape operators; hence, we have used minimum edit distance classifier to recognize the input character. The proposed character recognition technique is evaluated using the characters extracted from printed aged multilingual Indian documents having English, Devanagari, and Marathi scripts and achieved encouraging results. To further assess the performance of the proposed system, we have considered publicly available media-lab license plate benchmark database and achieved significant performance.

Abstract:A Recognition System for Devanagari Handwritten Digits using CNN, a novel approach to recognizing transcribed digits in the Devanagari script using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). This framework represents a significant contribution to the field of pattern recognition and language processing objective of the research project is to perform a literature review, identify an algorithm for a digits recognition system implement the Devanagari digits recognition system for educational activities. In the first phase, a dataset of 150 transcribed digit images is curated, allocating 75% for training (113 images) and 25% for validation (37 images). A Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is designed with five convolutional layers, each utilizing 3 × 3 filters with 16, 32, 64, 128, and 128 feature maps, respectively. The experiments conducted involve varying the number of epochs, with results captured at 5, 10, 20, and 100 epochs. This comprehensive evaluation aims to understand the model's convergence and performance over different training durations. The outcomes of this phase contribute to the fine-tuning and optimization of the model for subsequent phases. In the second phase, the dataset is expanded to 100*10 (1000) images, each resized to 28 × 28 pixels through cropping. The CNN architecture remains consistent, with the previously determined layer configuration. Similar experiments are conducted, assessing the model's performance over 5, 10, 20, and 100 epochs. This model with a data size of 1000 demonstrates superior accuracy (100% on mini-batches) compared to the 150 model, with consistently high validation accuracy, while both models exhibit decreasing trends in mini-batch and validation losses, favoring the larger dataset, and maintaining a constant learning rate at 0.0100, albeit with a slightly longer time elapsed for each epoch due to the increased data size. 98.37398 accuracy in the phase 2 experiment in 100 epochs. Abstract:The main challenge in on-line handwritten character recognition in Indian lan- guage is the large size of the character set, larger similarity between different characters in the script and the huge variation in writing style. In this paper we propose a framework for on-line handwitten script recognition taking cues from speech signal processing literature. The framework is based on identify- ing strokes, which in turn lead to recognition of handwritten on-line characters rather that the conventional character identification. Though the framework is described for Devanagari script, the framework is general and can be applied to any language. The proposed platform consists of pre-processing, feature extraction, recog- nition and post processing like the conventional character recognition but ap- plied to strokes. The on-line Devanagari character recognition reduces to one of recognizing one of 69 primitives and recognition of a character is performed by recognizing a sequence of such primitives. We further show the impact of noise removal on on-line raw data which is usually noisy. The use of Fuzzy Direc- tional Features to enhance the accuracy of stroke recognition is also described. The recognition results are compared with commonly used directional features in literature using several classifiers.

Abstract:Recognition of ancient Tamil characters has always been a challenge for epigraphers. This is primarily because the language has evolved over the several centuries and the character set over this time has both expanded and diversified. This proposed work focuses on improving optical character recognition techniques for ancient Tamil script which was in use between the 7th and 12th centuries. While comprehensively curating a functional data set for ancient Tamil characters is an arduous task, in this work, a data set has been curated using cropped images of characters found on certain temple inscriptions, specific to this time as a case study. After using Otsu thresholding method for binarization of the image a two dimensional convolution neural network is defined and used to train, classify and, recognize the ancient Tamil characters. To implement the optical character recognition techniques, the neural network is linked to the Tesseract using the pytesseract library of Python. As an added feature, the work also incorporates Google's text to speech voice engine to produce an audio output of the digitized text. Various samples for both modern and ancient Tamil were collected and passed through the system. It is found that for Tamil inscriptions studied over the considered time period, a combined efficiency of 77.7 percent can be achieved.

Abstract:Word recognition has garnered significant attention due to its wide-ranging real-time applications, including postal automation, signature verification, bank check processing and writer identification. Handwritten word recognition poses a formidable challenge in computer vision, primarily due to the diverse writing styles exhibited by individuals. Presently, researchers are increasingly focused on developing holistic word recognition approaches. This holistic approach treats entire words as single, indivisible entities for the purpose of feature extraction and recognition, rendering it well-suited for identifying words with overlapping characters. In this study, authors have proposed a holistic approach for recognizing offline handwritten words in the Devanagari script, employing VGG16 (Visual Geometry Group) as a versatile feature extractor. Three classifiers, namely Gaussian Naive Bayes (Gaussian NB), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and Random Forest (RF), are considered for classifying these word images. Based on the extracted features and the aforementioned classifiers, words are categorized into one of 50 distinct word classes. Various performance evaluation metrics, including Accuracy, Precision, Recall, F1-score and Area Under the Curve (AUC), are employed to assess the effectiveness of the proposed system. It is worth noting that the Random Forest (RF) based classification technique achieved exceptional accuracy, with impressive recall, high precision and a remarkable F1-score. Additionally, the XGBoost based classification exhibited comparable performance, achieving the highest possible AUC in this study. Furthermore, to underscore the significance of this work, authors have presented a comparative analysis of the proposed approach with existing state-of-the-art methodologies.

Design And Development Of An Ancient Chinese Document Recognition System

Abstract:The digitization of ancient Chinese documents presents new challenges to OCR (Optical Character Recognition) research field due to the large character set of ancient Chinese characters, variant font types, and versatile document layout styles, as these documents are historical reflections to the thousands of years of Chinese civilization. After analyzing the general characteristics of ancient Chinese documents, we present a solution for recognition of ancient Chinese documents with regular font-types and layout-styles. Based on the previous work on multilingual OCR in THOCR system, we focus on the design and development of two key technologies which include character recognition and page segmentation. Experimental results show that the developed character recognition kernel of 19,635 Chinese characters outperforms our original traditional Chinese recognition kernel; Benchmarked test on printed ancient Chinese books proves that the proposed system is effective for regular ancient Chinese documents.

Abstract:In this study, we introduce and assess a novel feature extraction technique that analyzes the extent of character image boundaries to enhance recognition accuracy. This method is evaluated in conjunction with Nearest Neighbors (NN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers, and compared against various feature selection methods including Consistency Based Analysis (CBA), Correlation Feature Set (CFS), Chi-Squared Attribute (CSA), Independent Component Analysis (ICA), Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and Random Projection (RP). Our extensive experiments demonstrate that CSA consistently outperforms the other techniques, achieving high recognition rates of 90.4%, 96.1%, and 92.9% for lower zone, middle zone, and upper zone characters, respectively, when using the NN classifier. The authors have selected the Nearest Neighbors (NN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers based on their widely use and effectiveness in character recognition tasks. NN was chosen for its simplicity and intuitive approach, while SVM was selected for its robust performance in high-dimensional spaces and its ability to find an optimal decision boundary. The feature selection methods were chosen based on their established relevance and effectiveness in previous research. These results highlight CSA's superiority and suggest that expanding the dataset could further enhance recognition accuracy, contributing to the robustness of future OCR applications.

Abstract:"MODI lipi" is one of the Indian ancient scripts and is as yet unrecognized script. It is not in use today, but it has importance for historical researchers of not only the ancient Maratha history but history in different regions of India. The recognition of MODI demands transform invariant approach, as MODI documents are deformed severely. Invariant handwritten character recognition is accomplished in the past by employing feature extraction methods, yet there is a scope to improve the results under global transformations. At present, convolutional neural network exhibits only local transform invariance impulsively by convolution-pooling architecture and data augmentation. To achieve global invariance for MODI recognition, the proposed classification framework used CNN-based transfer learning and a global feature extractor histogram of oriented gradient. Additionally, the criterion based on principal component analysis and confusion matrix are introduced to choose the invariant feature and to find classes responsible for poor recognition rate. The proposed classifiers are trained on a self-created handwritten MODI character dataset and tested on transformed MODI dataset. The results showed that the proposed framework is effective to recognize MODI handwritten characters under transformations without data augmentation and network alteration.

Abstract:It is very common for human beings to include both text and non-text data in a handwritten document. Text portion contains alphabets, digits, and mathematical symbols, whereas non-text portion includes various graphical entities like flow chart, transition diagram, etc. This paper proposes a novel method for online handwritten text and non-text stroke classification with text written in Devanagari script, the most popular script in India, using two different architectures of artificial Recurrent Neural Network (RNN)—long-short term memory (LSTM) and bidirectional long-short term memory (BLSTM). In the present work, the classifier classifies an ink as text or non-text stroke when a sequence of strokes of any online handwritten document of both text and non-text data is presented to it. Various structural and directional features related to online handwriting have been extracted from the basic strokes of text and non-text data. The system has been trained in both LSTM and BLSTM architecture based classification platforms. Experiment has also been performed using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to make a comparative performance analysis with RNN classifier based results. The classification performance of the present work has been evaluated using a self-generated dataset and it outperforms the CNN based results as well as the existing studies available in the literature in this regard.

Abstract:An image processing technique called edge detection is used to find and identify the edges, curves, and objects in digital images. Edge detection includes various mathematical calculations that focus on locating the edges and curves where a digital image's brightness abruptly shifts or has discontinuities. In the fields of feature detection and feature extraction in image processing and computer vision, edge detection is a fundamental tool. The application of an edge detector results in the development of a set of connected curves that represent surface marks, character boundaries, and discontinuities in surface orientation. Character boundaries are described via edges. The majority of a feature is described by its edges. A group of pixels called an edge is used to describe an area where abrupt variations in intensity occur. Because it removes items of interest for actions like description, segmentation is a vital stage in an image recognition system. This paper focuses on edge detection techniques that can be implemented on characters for effective character recognition. Devanagari text includes curvy edges which need to be detected for proper recognition hence different edge detector operators are implemented to find the most effective amongst them to acquire clear edges of the text. There are several methods for segmenting images, including segmentation based on artificial neural networks, clustering, edges, regions, and thresholds. In this paper, edge-based segmentation is used. The Canny, Laplacian, Sobel, Prewitt, and Robert operators are used to detect edges, and the generated image is compared to the original binary image. The pre-processing phase includes the binarization step.

Abstract:In order to rapidly build an automatic and precise system for image recognition and categorization, deep learning is a vital technology. Handwritten character classification also gaining more attention due to its major contribution in automation and specially to develop applications for helping visually impaired people. Here, the proposed work highlighting on fine-tuning approach and analysis of state-of-the-art Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) designed for Devanagari Handwritten characters classification. A new Devanagari handwritten characters dataset is generated which is publicly available. Datasets consist of total 5800 isolated images of 58 unique character classes: 12 vowels, 36 consonants and 10 numerals. In addition to this database, a two-stage VGG16 deep learning model is implemented to recognize those characters using two advanced adaptive gradient methods. A two-stage approach of deep learning is developed to enhance overall success of the proposed Devanagari Handwritten Character Recognition System (DHCRS). The first model achieves 94.84% testing accuracy with training loss of 0.18 on new dataset. Moreover, the second fine-tuned model requires very fewer trainable parameters and notably less training time to achieve state-of-the-art performance on a very small dataset. It achieves 96.55% testing accuracy with training loss of 0.12. We also tested the proposed model on four different benchmark datasets of isolated characters as well as digits of Indic scripts. For all the datasets tested, we achieved the promising results.
