Abstract:As a typical smart material, ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC) has a sandwich structure, which consists of a base membrane and two thin metallic electrodes on both sides of the base membrane. The properties of the base membrane, Nafion as the most used base material, strongly affect the performance of IPMC actuator. This paper reports the effects of different additives, such as ethylene glycol (EG), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), N, N-dimethyl formamide (DMF), and N-methyl formamide (NMF), on the performances of the casting membranes and SO-based IPMC actuators. Studies have shown that the microstructures of the casting membranes with EG and DMSO as additives are more loose and amorphous, leading to higher water contents and thus higher conductivity than those with DMF, NMF, and Nafion 117. Among the casting membrane-based IPMC actuators, EG-based IPMC actuator has larger deformation and blocking force, higher strain energy density and conversion efficiency at 2 V DC voltage, whose electromechanical properties are most close to that based on Nafion 117. Abstract:As one typical kind of ionic electroactive polymers (iEAPs), ionic polymer metal composites (IPMC) consist of an ionomer and two thin layers of metallic electrode on its both sides. The micro-properties of the ionomer, usually Nafion as the most used ionomer, exert strongly effects on the responses of IPMC actuator. Our works revealed the effects of casting process with different additives (ethylene glycol (EG), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), N, N′-dimethyl formamide (DMF) and N-methyl formamide (NMF)), and blending with sulfonated multi-walled carbon nanotube (sMWCNT) on properties of ionomer and the electromechanical responses of IPMC actuators. Some important properties of casting membrane and sMWCNT/Nafion blending membrane, such as surface morphology, water uptake and ionic exchange capacity, etc., were measured and evaluated. Among the casting membrane-based IPMC actuators, EG based IPMC actuator has larger deformation at 2 V DC voltage. And a trace amount of sMWCNT can improve the performances of IPMCs significantly for realistic applications.

Abstract:The current actuation performance of ionic polymer–metal composites (IPMCs) limits their further application in the aerospace, energy, and optics fields, among others. To overcome this issue, we developed a freeze-drying process to generate Nafion membranes with a porous structure, the characteristics of which were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and water uptake tests. The pores fabricated using the developed freeze-drying process had a diameter of approximately 270 nm, and a porosity of nearly 40.45%. The displacement and the central angle were introduced as variables to evaluate the bending deformation of an IPMC actuator based on the porous Nafion membrane. Compared with conventional actuators, this IPMC actuator showed an increase in displacement of 4963.6% at 2 V, and an increase in central angle of 73.35% at 3 V. Although the blocking forces of this IPMC actuator decreased to some extent, it was confirmed that the integrated actuation performance, which was evaluated using the strain energy density increment, was improved. The performance of the IPMC actuator was enhanced as a result of the porous Nafion structure manufactured using the developed freeze-drying process.

Abstract:With advantages of low driving voltage, good flexibility and high electromechanical efficiency, ionic polymer-metal composites (IPMCs), which are one of the most attractive smart materials, have been research hotspot in actuators, sensors and artificial muscles. However, a serious drawback of little deformation of thick IPMC actuator limits its application. In this paper, we fabricated thick porous Nafion membranes by freeze-drying process. A series of Thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Water uptake (WUP) tests were performed to examine the validity of the freeze-drying process and the pore size and the porosity. Then, the porous IPMCs were fabricated with the freeze-drying processed Nafion membranes by the solution casting and reducing plating. Finally, the IPMC actuators with the dimensions of 25 x 5 x 1 in millimeters were achieved and tested. The terminal deformation of the porous IPMC actuator increased by 739.7%, compared with the ordinary IPMC actuator with the same dimensions under the driving voltage of 2VDC.
Property of ionic polymer metal composite with different thicknesses based on solution casting technique

Abstract:As an ionic electroactive polymer, ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC) has unique advantages and is widely used in various fields. However, the output force of IPMC is small, which further limits the application of IPMC. In this study, the Nafion520cs were selected as the preparation solution, and three ion-exchange polymer membranes (IEPMs) with different thicknesses (158, 256 and 383 [Formula: see text]m) were designed and prepared successfully by solution casting technique to study the output force. Then, three platinum electrodes-IPMCs (Pt-IPMCs) were fabricated using electroless plating method. The properties of Pt-IPMCs in terms of morphology, displacements and blocking forces were then evaluated under direct current voltage. The results showed that the prepared ionic membranes were uniform, transparent and flat, without accumulation or bubble. The platinum particles were preferably deposited on the surface, which promoted delivery of current through the IPMCs under the applied voltage, and improved the actuation performance. With the increase of voltage, the maximum displacement and maximum blocking force of the three IPMCs increased first and then decreased. When the voltage is 5.5 V, the maximum displacement for 158 um is 26 mm, while the maximum blocking force of 10.74 mN appears at 6.5 V for 383 um. It is necessary to select suitable thickness of IPMCs to adapt to different working environment and field, which provides a strong basis for further application of IPMCs.

Abstract:Recently, Ionic polymer metal composites (IPMCs), becoming an increasingly popular material, are used as soft actuators for its inherent properties of light weight, flexibility, softness, especial efficient transformation from electrical energy to mechanical energy with large bending strain response to low activation voltage. This paper mainly focuses on the suitable conditions for surface-roughening of Nafion 117 membrane. The surfaces of Nafion membrane were pretreated and optimized by sandblasting, mainly considering the change of sandblasting time and powder size. The modified surfaces are characterized in terms of their topography from the confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and SEM. Then, the detailed change in surface and interfacial electrodes and performances for IPMC actuators prepared by the roughened membranes, were measured and discussed. The results show that an optimized roughening condition with large interface area (capacitance) can effectively increases the electromechanical responses of IPMC.

Abstract:Nafion membrane with macropores is synthesized from silica crystal and composited with Pt nanoparticles to fabricate macroporous ionic polymer-metal composite (M-IPMC) actuator. M-IPMC shows highly dispersed small Pt nanoparticles on the porous walls of Nafion membrane. After the electromechanical performance test, M-IPMC actuator demonstrates a maximum displacement output of 19.8 mm and a maximum blocking force of 8.1 mN, far better than that of IPMC actuator without macroporous structure (9.6 mm and 2.8 mN) at low voltages (5.8–7.0 V). The good electromechanical performance can be attributed to interconnected macropores that can improve the charge transport during the actuation process and can allow the Pt nanoparticles to firmly adsorb, leading to a good electromechanical property.

Abstract:In this paper, we developed a new kind of ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC) actuator by doping water-soluble sulfonated multi-walled carbon nanotube (sMWCNT) into Nafion matrix to overcome some major drawbacks of traditional IPMCs, such as relatively low bending deformation and carring capacity at low driving voltages. Firstly, sMWCNT was synthesized via diazotization coupling reaction, and then doped into Nafion matrix by casting method. Subsequently, the electrochemical and electromechanical properties of sMWCNT-reinforced Nafion membranes and the corresponding IPMCs were investigated. Finally, the effects of sMWCNT on the performances of IPMCs were evaluated and analyzed systematacially. The results showed that sMWCNT was homogeneously dispersed in Nafion matrix without any entangled structure or obvious agglomeration. The main factors for superior actuation performances, like water-uptake ratio, proton conductivity and elastic modulus, increased significantly. Compared to the pure Nafion IPMC and MWCNT/Nafion IPMC, much superior electrochemical and electromechanical performances were achieved in the sMWCNT/Nafion IPMC, which were attributed to the numerous insertion sites, high surface conductivity and excellent mechanical strength as well as the homogeneous dispersity of the incorporated sMWCNT. Herein, a trace amount of sMWCNT can improve the performances of IPMCs significantly for realistic applications.

Abstract:Current ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) always proves inadequate in terms of large attenuation and short working time in air due to water leakage. To address this problem, a feasible and effective solution was proposed in this study to enhance IPMC performance operating in air by doping polyethylene oxide (PEO) with superior water retention capacity into Nafion membrane. The investigation of physical characteristics of membranes blended with varying PEO contents revealed that PEO/Nafion membrane with 20 wt% PEO exhibited a homogeneous internal structure and a high water uptake ratio. At the same time, influences of PEO contents on electromechanical properties of IPMCs were studied, showing that the IPMCs with 20 wt% PEO presented the largest peak-to-peak displacement, the highest volumetric work density, and prolonged stable working time. It was demonstrated that doping PEO reinforced electromechanical performances and restrained displacement attenuation of the resultant IPMC.

Abstract:Water-based ionic polymer–metal composites (IPMCs) exhibit complex deformation properties, especially with decreasing water content. Based on our experimental understanding, we developed a systemic actuation mechanism for IPMCs in which the water swelling was taken as the basic cause of deformation. We focused on Nafion-IPMC, and formulated a multiphysical model to describe the complicated deformation properties. The model emphasizes pressure-induced convection fluxes and the significance of the water distribution on deformation. It shows that there are three eigen stresses activated by the migration of ions and water, namely, osmotic pressure, electrostatic stress, and capillary pressure. The model also provides a convenient way of simultaneously handling the internal eigen stresses and the external mechanical load. In this paper, we used a fundamental model, which only considered the hydrostatic pressure in the multiphysical model, to analyze the general transport properties of cations and water by numerical methods. Three effects were investigated: (1) the inter-coupling effects between cations and water, which slow down cation migration and attenuate the back-diffusion of water; (2) the pressure effect, which rarely influences the electric field and the cation distribution, but greatly changes the profile of the water concentration and then the deformation behavior; and (3) the hydration effect, which has a significant impact on the distribution profiles of the cations and the electrical potential. In contrast to the findings of traditional studies, the water concentration displays an almost uniform gradient across the thickness in the bulk, and the cation concentration at the cathode is greatly reduced by the volume effect of the hydrated cations.

Abstract:Ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) actuators are a class of electroactive polymer composites that exhibit some interesting electromechanical characteristics such as low voltage actuation, large displacements, and benefit from low density and elastic modulus. Elastic modulus and surface resistance are basic properties of IPMCs that play a role in almost all practical applications of these materials. The prediction of the elastic modulus and surface resistance is of extreme importance to better grasp the mechanical behavior of IPMCs and to evaluate the success of the design. This paper has proposed a theoretical framework for predicting the elastic modulus and surface resistance of copper electrodes IPMCs. A five layers analytical assemblage model is introduced for the IPMCs relied upon improved classical lamination theory. The depositional metallic atoms were used as the exterior layer, the ionic polymer was used as the middle layer, and the material between the two layers was a gradient layer. Based on Mori–Tanaka methodology and gradient mechanics, the overall elastic properties of composites are obtained and lie between those obtained from the experiment. The prediction showed a good agreement with the experimental elastic modulus values with a maximum deviation of less than 10%. The overall results have provided useful insight into the elastic modulus and surface resistance effects to the properties of the IPMC. This would open further opportunities toward the higher application of IPMC.
Improve the Performance of Mechanoelectrical Transduction of Ionic Polymer-Metal Composites Based on Ordered Nafion Nanofibres by Electrospinning

Abstract:An ionic polymer⁻metal composite (IPMC) is a kind of soft material. The applications of IPMC in actuators, environmental sensing, and energy harvesting are currently increasing rapidly. In this study, an ordered Nafion nanofibre mat prepared by electrospinning was used to investigate the characteristics of the mechanoelectrical transduction of IPMC. The morphologies of the Nafion nanofibre mat were characterized. The proton conductivity, ion exchange capacities, and water uptake potential of the Nafion nanofibre mat were compared to traditional IPMC, respectively. A novel mechanism of Nafion nanofibre IPMC was designed and the open circuit voltage and short circuit current were measured. The maximum voltage value reached 100 mv. The output power was 3.63 nw and the power density was up to 42.4 μW/Kg under the load resistance. The Nafion nanofibre mat demonstrates excellent mechanoelectrcical transduction behavior compared to traditional IPMC and could be used for the development of self-powered devices in the future.

Abstract:Advances in Mechanical Engineering, Volume 16, Issue 10, October 2024. Ionic Polymer Metal Composite (IPMC) can be used as flexible actuators and sensors in the fields of bionic machinery and medical devices. However, IPMC still suffer from poor actuation performance and high cost of electrode preparation in practical applications. Optimisation of electrodes and use of novel assembly processes are expected to solve these problems. In this paper, low-dimensional nanocarbon materials were used to modify the Nafion membrane. Appropriate amounts of carbon nanotubes and carbon black were weighed and dispersed in chitosan and acetic acid to form a stable electrolyte. A new IPMC was prepared by bonding carbon nanotube and carbon black films on the Nafion membrane using the hot pressing method. Scanning electron microscope images showed that the hybrid films composed of carbon nanotubes and carbon black were successfully hot pressed onto the surface of the Nafion membrane and the hybrid electrode layer composed of carbon nanotubes and carbon black was more homogeneous and densely packed. The results of driving performance tests show that the hybrid electrode-modified IPMC has excellent driving performance, with a maximum output displacement of 9.2 mm and a maximum output force of 9.9 mN at a voltage of 5.0 V. These results are 1.07 and 1.14 times higher than those of the carbon nanotube IPMC and 1.74 and 1.70 times higher than those of the carbon black IPMC under the same conditions, respectively.

Abstract:The electromechanical properties of ionic polymer-metal composites (IPMC) are affected by many factors, including resistivity of surface electrodes, bending stiffness and dielectric modulus, etc, which are closely related to physical and chemical preparation steps. This paper focuses on the effects of preparation steps on these physical parameters and electromechanical properties of IPMC actuators. The mechanisms of electrode formation in the preparation steps are also clarified and investigated. To obtain samples with different features, one or more of the crucial process steps, including pretreatment, impregnation-reduction and chemical plating, were selected to fabricate IPMC. The experimental observations revealed that the physical parameters of IPMC strongly depend on their electrode morphologies caused by different steps, which were reasonable from the standpoint of physics. IPMC with the characteristics of low surface resistance and low bending stiffness, and a large area of interface electrode exhibits a perfect performance. The improvements were considered to be attributed to the double-layer electrostatic effect, induced by the broad dispersion of penetrated electrode nanoparticles. An electrical component, consisting of an equivalent circuit of a parallel combination of the serial circuit of the resistance and the electric double-layer capacitance, is introduced to qualitatively explain the deformation behaviors of IPMC. This research helps to improve the preparation steps and promote the understanding of IPMC.
Low-Voltage Driven Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite Actuators: Structures, Materials, and Applications

Abstract:With the characteristics of low driving voltage, light weight, and flexibility, ionic polymer-metal composites (IPMCs) have attracted much attention as excellent candidates for artificial muscle materials in the fields of biomedical devices, flexible robots, and microelectromechanical systems. Under small voltage excitation, ions inside the IPMC proton exchange membrane migrate directionally, leading to differences in the expansion rate of the cathode and the anode, which in turn deform. This behavior is caused by the synergistic action of a three-layer structure consisting of an external electrode layer and an internal proton exchange membrane, but the electrode layer is more dominant in this process due to the migration and storage of ions. The exploration of modifications and alternatives for proton exchange membranes and recent advances in the fabrication and characterization of conductive materials, especially carbon-based materials and conductive polymers, have contributed significantly to the development of IPMCs. This paper reviews the progress in the application of proton exchange membranes and electrode materials for IPMCs, discusses various processes currently applied to IPMCs preparation, and introduces various promising applications of cutting-edge IPMCs with high performance to provide new ideas and approaches for the research of new generation of low-voltage ionic soft actuators.
Modelling the effect of crack formation on the actuation behaviour of ionic polymer metal composite

Abstract:In this paper, the effect of different cracks on the platinum electrode region of an IPMC actuator which occurs due to its continuous bending is modelled. The IPMC actuator is modelled in a cantilever configuration using COMSOL Multiphysics 5.3 a finite element method solver. The thickness of Nafion (polymer) membrane and (platinum) electrode 267 μm and 20 μm (each side) and the full length of IPMC is 36 mm long and width is 6 mm. Experimental results showing the deflection and frequency of IPMC with the same dimensions are noted and the simulation results for the same beam dimensions are validated with the experimental results. Studies are carried out on (a) different shapes of cracks (V, U, and rectangular shape) on electrode region, (b) depth and position of the cracks on the electrode, (c) the effect of presence multiple cracks on the top and bottom electrode. The change in the IPMC's resonance frequency and tip deflection for various cracks is studied and compared with the IPMC with no cracks. IPMC with U-shaped cracks has the highest deflection of 2.88 mm when cracks are located on single side and rectangular cracks have the highest deflection of 3.06 mm when cracks are located on both sides of IPMC as compared to 2.5 mm without any cracks on the electrode. These studies reveal that the U shaped single crack and rectangular double sided cracks largely affect the IPMC actuation behaviour thus altering its deflection values. The effect of location of cracks suggests that cracks near the free end of IPMC affect the deflection more compared to that near fixed end.

Fabrication and Actuation of Cu-Ionic Polymer Metal Composite

Abstract:In this study, Cu-Ionic polymer metal composites (Cu-IPMC) were fabricated using the electroless plating method. The properties of Cu-IPMC in terms of morphology, water loss rate, adhesive force, surface resistance, displacements, and tip forces were evaluated under direct current voltage. In order to understand the relationship between lengths and actuation properties, we developed two static models of displacements and tip forces. The deposited Cu layer is uniform and smooth and contains about 90% by weight of copper, according to the energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis data obtained. The electrodes adhere well (level of 5B) on the membrane, to ensure a better conductivity and improve the actuation performance. The penetration depth of needle-like electrodes can reach up to around 70 μm, and the structure shows concise without complex branches, to speed up the actuation. Overall the maximum displacement increased as the voltage increased. The applied voltage for the maximum force output is 8–9 V. The root mean square error (RMSE) and determination coefficient (DC) of the displacement and force models are 1.66 and 1.23, 0.96 and 0.86, respectively.
Influence of Temperature on the Electromechanical Properties of Ionic Liquid-Doped Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite Actuators

Abstract:Ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) actuators have considerable potential for a wide range of applications. Although IPMC actuators are widely studied for their electromechanical properties, most studies have been conducted at the ambient conditions. The electromechanical performance of IPMC actuators at higher temperature is still far from understood. In this study, the effect of temperature on the electromechanical behavior (the rate of deformation and curvature) and electrochemical behavior (current flow) of ionic liquid doped IPMC actuators are examined and reported. Both electromechanical and electrochemical studies were conducted in air at temperatures ranging from 25 °C to 90 °C. Electromechanically, the actuators showed lower cationic curvature with increasing temperature up to 70 °C and a slower rate of deformation with increasing temperature up to 50 °C. A faster rate of deformation was recorded at temperatures higher than 50 °C, with a maximum rate at 60 °C. The anionic response showed a lower rate of deformation and a higher anionic curvature with increasing temperatures up to 50 °C with an abrupt increase in the rate of deformation and decrease of curvature at 60 °C. In both cationic and anionic responses, actuators started to lose functionality and show unpredictable performance for temperatures greater than 60 °C, with considerable fluctuations at 70 °C. Electrochemically, the current flow across the actuators was increased gradually with increasing temperature up to 80 °C during the charging and discharging cycles. A sudden increase in current flow was recorded at 90 °C indicating a shorted circuit and actuator failure.
Printing ionic polymer metal composite actuators by fused deposition modeling technology

Abstract:In this work, we printed a Nafion precursor membrane by fused deposition modeling (FDM) rapid prototyping technology and further fabricated IPMCs by electroless plating. The ion-exchange capacity of the Nafion membrane was tested, and the morphology of IPMCs was observed. The electro-mechanical properties of IPMCs under AC voltage inputs were studied, and grasping experiments were performed. The results show that the Nafion membrane after hydrolysis has a good ion-exchange ability and water-holding capacity. SEM observed that the thickness of the IPMC's electrode layer was about 400 nm, and the platinum layer was tightly combined with the substrate membrane. When using a square wave input of 3.5 V and 0.1 Hz, the maximum current of IPMCs reached 0.30 A, and the displacement and blocking force were 7.57 mm and 10.5 mN, respectively. The new fabrication process ensures the good driving performance of the printed IPMC. And two pieces of IPMCs can capture the irregular objects successfully, indicating the feasibility of printing IPMCs by FDM technology. This paper provides a new and simple method for the fabrication of three-dimensional IPMCs, which can be further applied in flexible grippers and soft robotics.GRAPHICAL
Actuation Modeling of Ionic–Polymer Metal Composite Actuators Using Micromechanics Approach

Abstract:Herein, the movement of hydrated cations in ionic–polymer metal composite (IPMC) is analyzed by the micromechanics method. Based on the mechanism of IPMC, the migration of hydrated cations is in a step‐by‐step order, and the aggregation of hydrated cations on the cathode side results in the bending of IPMC toward the anode. The physical models of the maximum displacement and maximum blocking force of IPMC are established, the Pt IPMCs are prepared by chemical deposition, and the calculated values are compared with the experimental values. The results indicate that there is water electrolysis in the actuation process of IPMC, which inhibits the migration of ions on the electrode surface and has a negative effect on the property of IPMC. By comparing the calculated value of the model with the experimental value, it is found that there is good consistency. The mathematical statistical metrics, mean absolute error, mean relative error, determination coefficient, correlation coefficient, mean square error, root mean square error, and relative root mean square error, are used to assess the model capability, which puts a theoretical foundation for the prediction and simulation of IPMC and promotes the further development and practical application of IPMC.
