Abstract:This study aims to investigate the effect of gifted students' art education on their professional preferences. The survey model, one of the quantitative research models, was used. A total of 320 students from the Çukurova Science and Art Center art field and general talent field, which were determined by the convenience sampling method, constitute the research sample group. The occupational preference inventory prepared by Atli and Kendal (2017) was used in the research. The inventory comprises six sub-dimensions: investigative, entrepreneurial, artistic, social, realistic, and traditional. Independent Sample t-Test and Anova Test were applied for the analyses, and Cohen's d and Eta Square tests were applied to calculate the effect level in meaningful data. As a result of the research on general talent and art students, it has been determined that there are significant differences in gender, school type, school level, and age.
Psychological Changes of Music and Fine Arts Students in the Education Process: A Comparative Longitudinal Study

Abstract:Background: This study aimed to determine the changes in psychological distress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms in students from the fine arts faculty in the first 2 years of their education in Turkey, in comparison with students from other faculties, and to reveal the causes of psychological distress, anxiety, and depression in fine arts students. Methods: The General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were applied to students from Faculty of Fine Arts and the Faculties of Economics and Sport Sciences (controls) in the first week of the 2017-2018 academic year. Students also completed a questionnaire measuring their possible stressful life events (at timepoint T1). The process was repeated for the same students in the second year (T2). The changes between the two time¬points were examined prospectively. Results: A total of 96 fine arts students agreed to participate at T1 and 66 at T2 (68.8%); for the controls, it was 259 at T1 and 182 (70.3%) at T2. The fine arts students at T1 included 15 music majors, 45 cinema and television, and 36 handi¬crafts, sculpture, and painting. Their average age at T1 was 21.0 yrs (SD 5.8) and 54.2% were male; for the other students, it was 19.4 yrs (2.7) and 56.0% male. Fine arts students' GHQ-12 score averages increased significantly from T1 to T2 (11.7 to 14.3, p=0.002). Their BDI score averages increased from 10.3 to 12.3 (p=0.044). Moreover, their S-Anxiety score averages increased from 41.1 at T1 to 44.1 at T2 (p=0.008). However, the increase in T-Anxiety scores was not statistically significant. None of the control students' test scores varied between the two timepoints (p>0.05). At T2, for fine arts students, there was no significant difference between female and male students in terms of GHQ-12, BDI, and S-Anxiety scores. However, T-anxiety scores were higher in female students. By linear regression analysis, "worrying about the future (individual)" was found to be a determinant on all scale scores in fine arts students. Conclusion: The psychological indicators increased significantly in fine arts students during the first year of their education.

Abstract:Design Thinking is a collaborative, interdisciplinary, innovative, creative, problem-solving and human-centered process for creating user-oriented products, services or experiences. Because of its ability to foster creativity and innovation, it is applied in the fields of industry, business, engineering, technology and education by applying an empathetic, flexible and iterative approach. Along with the search for a teaching strategy for the acquisition of 21st century skills, there has been an intense and broad interest in Design Thinking applied in education in recent years. Since the design thinking approach is similar to the content of the theoretical and practical applications of the artistic production process, art and design thinking are related concepts. The study aimed to determine the interaction between design thinking and art and also the development of an individual’s design thinking skills through art education. As a result of the literature review; by examining the relationship between art and design-oriented thinking, it has been evaluated common and influence sides each other with art education, and the ability to develop design thinking skills through art education is also determined and discussed. The paper also presents some evaluations and recommendations about raising productive individuals with design-oriented thinking through effective art education.
Prospective Social Studies Teachers’ Views on a Creative Drama and Painting Activity with Turkish Coffee

Abstract:The purpose of this research was to carry out an interdisciplinary art education activity with Turkish coffee and to evaluate the views of prospective teachers. For this aim, an integrated single case study design with a qualitative research approach was used. The study group consisted of twenty prospective social studies teachers. A questionnaire and semi-structured observation form were used as data collection tools. The data obtained were grouped under specific codes and categories and interpreted with a descriptive analysis approach. The visualised combination of the experiences, feelings and thoughts that the prospective teachers acquired through the natural colour content of coffee and the synthetic content of paints enabled the formation of a great variety of visual effects. The research findings show that prospective teachers gained aesthetic values through these visual effects. The integration of Turkish coffee with creative drama and painting also enabled the students to increase their awareness regarding Turkish coffee as an intangible cultural heritage in the social studies curriculum. Furthermore, it may ensure the dissemination of activities that involve the use of natural materials together with artificial materials for artistic purposes in all fields of teacher education.

Abstract:For decades critical thinking was seen as a skill that had to be developed in every educational context. Therefore, developing this ability became a principal issue for many educators and researchers. A great deal of research was carried out to reveal what fosters this ability and how it is fostered. Besides, the increasing interest in critical thinking popularized the question of how critical thinking could be adapted to other disciplines. In this study, the relationship between critical thinking and music education will be investigated. Hence the purpose of this study is to review the effects of music education on the students’ critical thinking abilities in the light of literature. In addition, the teachers’ role of guiding students to achieve critical thinking will be discussed. Finally, how to foster the critical thinking abilities of music students in the context of music education will be questioned and some suggestions will be made about the development of music students’ critical thinking skills.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to collect the opinions of pre-school teachers about their attitudes and self-efficacy perceptions towards art activities they apply. The research is designed in a mixed method pattern. Participant Information Form, Preschool Teachers’ Attitude towards Arts & Art Activities Scale Form were used in quantitative research while Semi-Structured Interview Form is used in qualitative research. The quantitative research was carried out with 100 pre-school teachers working in different provinces and schools affiliated with Ministery of National Education in the school year of 2019-2020. The qualitative research was carried out with 10 volunteer preschool teachers that is also participated in quantitative research. In quantitative data analysis, t test and one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) is made by using SPSS.22 statistical analysis program while researcher notes and voice recordings (from the interviews) are used in qualitative data analysis. According to the findings, the average of attitude scale towards Art & Art activities of teachers working in private schools is higher than the teachers working in public schools. Examining Studio-Based Art Practices as a Means of Fostering Critical Thinking Skills in Young Learners

Abstract:This study examines how studio-based art practices, such as drawing, painting and sculpture, can be used to foster critical thinking skills in elementary and middle school students. Studio art engages students in hands-on creative problem solving and experimentation. A review of literature on critical thinking skills, visual arts education, and cognitive development in children was conducted. Case studies of art programs that incorporate discussion and reflection were also examined. The research suggests that open-ended art projects that promote student autonomy and require making decisions can boost skills like analysis, interpretation, evaluation and creative problem solving. When combined with self-reflection and group critique, studio art may enhance perspective taking, reasoning ability and abstract thought in young learners. When implemented intentionally to cultivate questioning, exploration and meaning making, studio-based visual art practices show potential as a tool for nurturing critical thinking during foundational school years. Further research is still needed to systematically measure critical thinking outcomes of arts-integrated approaches versus traditional instruction alone. Educators and administrators should consider how critical thinking concepts can be made explicit within art curriculum and instruction in order to leverage the cognitive benefits of studio practice for overall student development.

Abstract:Aim: This study was carried out to determine the reasons for choosing the department of interior architecture at Eskişehir Technical University. Method: In the study, a questionnaire prepared by the researchers and approved by the Ethics Committee was sent to the 105 first year students who were enrolled via e-posta in the Department of Interior Architecture of Eskişehir Technical University in the 2021-2022 Fall semester. The obtained data were evaluated using descriptive statistics in a computer environment. Findings: In the study, arithmetic mean value and frequencies were used to reveal the reasons for preference. In this study, in which 73.6% of those who preferred the department were women, it was found that the most effective factors among the reasons for choosing the department were among the individual factors, and the actors with the least effect were the actors with an arithmetic mean value of 1.83. In addition, it has been revealed that 96.5% of the students have professional knowledge. In the question about the definition of the profession, it was learned that 73.3% of the students’ made definitions that are not related to the definition of profession. Conclusion: It has been revealed that the most effective factors in students' preference for the department are that the profession, which is among the individual factors, makes them happy and that they realize their own wishes, while the most ineffective factor is external actors, and students prefer them in line with their own wishes.
The Influence of Environment Education on Critical Thinking and Environmental Attitude

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of environmental education on students’critical thinking and environmental attitudes. The sample of the study included 8th grade students from five schools which were randomly selected from different districts of Sakarya.Survey research method was employed in the study. The Critical Thinking Test in Environmental Education (CTTEE) was used in order to measure critical thinking skills of the students in environmental education. The test is comprised of three lower dimensions titled as “Conclusions, Inferencesand Identifying Bias”. The environmental attitude scale, which was also used in the study. In this study, it was attempted to determine the variability in the outcome variable and to question whether critical thinking is attributable to gender, socio-economic status and school type. The results of the study suggested that the subjects in the sample have an average critical thinking skills level in environmental education. Ancova and t-test results also showed a meaningful statistical significance in the students’ critical thinking skills and attitudes towards the environment in terms of gender, socio-cultural level and school type.Moreover, in accordance with the results obtained from the study, it could be stated that The Critical Thinking Test in Environmental Education (CTTEE) may be used to identify critical skills of primary school students and the Environmental Attitude Scale may be employed as a useful measurement tool to determine the attitudes of the primary school students toward the environment.
An examination of high school students critical thinking dispositions and analytical thinking skills

Abstract:The purpose of this correlational survey study is to examine the critical thinking dispositions and analytical thinking skills of high school students. Using a multistage cluster sampling plan, 433 students from different types of high schools completed the critical thinking disposition, and the analytical thinking skills scales. Descriptive analysis, regression analysis, and MANOVA were used to analyze the data. Research results indicated that high school students had high levels of analytical thinking skills and critical thinking dispositions. Analytical thinking skills explained 57% of the variance in critical thinking dispositions. The results suggested that having high analytical thinking skills had an impact on students’ critical thinking dispositions. The results also showed that the critical thinking dispositions and analytical thinking skills of students in high performing schools were higher than those in low performing schools. Finally, mothers with higher level of education had a greater impact on students’ critical thinking dispositions and analytical thinking skills.

Abstract:This article aims to understand the place of the tempera technique in art history, which is thought to be encountered for the first time by art education undergraduate students, and to determine the effects on the participants after the application. The study consists of the findings and results of the first and second research questions in the master thesis “Tempera technique and its use in the course of painting courses on undergraduate level.” In this study the “case study” pattern was used, and is one of the qualitative research approaches. The participants of the research are eight students studying in Bursa Uludag University, Faculty of Education, Department of Fine Arts Education in the 2018-2019 academic year. The data collection tools of literature review and two interview forms interview were used. The findings obtained were evaluated by thematic analysis technique. According to the findings obtained in the research, it was observed that the participants did not have prior knowledge about the tempera technique before oral presentation and application. It was concluded that there were differences in the levels of interest and knowledge after the teaching process, and that there were positive changes in their opinions regarding the technique.

Abstract:This study aims to ensure that graduate students from plastic arts disciplines (sculpture, graphics, painting, ceramics) can develop their critical analysis skills through their jewelry design practices from the perspective of their own art disciplines. A group of 25 students participated in the study, which was planned for three hours a day, one day a week, for a total of 28 weeks during the autumn and spring semesters of 2021-2022. In the study, we conducted interviews with designers, artists, and academicians about their production processes. The participants in the study were given the opportunity to experience jewelry design projects in a digital environment by teaching and using the “Nomad Sculpt” software. The participants presented their own jewelry design projects with the criticism system developed by Feldman which consists of description, formal analysis, interpretation and judgement stages, and dialogues in which learning processes questioned with this research program were also included in the evaluation process. This process was evaluated with an analytical approach by a committee of faculty members involved in the project. The study aimed to explore and reveal the efficiency of the interdisciplinary working processes of the participating students across all artistic production stages, the awareness of the principles and elements of art, and the connections between artistic production and theoretical knowledge. Some of the results obtained from the study were that the participants who expected to improve their design skills met these expectations, and that the participants in the study were able to produce discourse on their artistic productions with the attainment of interdisciplinary work.

Abstract:It is generally agreed that higher education should enable students to improve their critical thinking, which is regarded as one of the most important real-life competences of the 21st century. The present study aims to reveal prospective teachers' opinions on critical thinking education course. Case study design, a qualitative research method, was used in the study. This study was conducted in the critical thinking education course with the participation of 28 prospective teachers enrolled in the undergraduate program of music education at a state university in Turkey. The study group was selected using criterion sampling. The data were gathered by an open-ended question form. Content analysis method was employed to analyze the obtained data. According to the findings of the study, it is evident that perceptions of prospective teachers participating in the study about critical thinking education course are positive in general. Findings revealed that critical thinking education course made great contributions to the prospective teachers in terms of improving their critical thinking skills, making contributions to their affective features and increasing their awareness in the field of music. It was determined that the participants defined themselves with more positive qualities after attending the course. Lastly, the participants reported their positive experiences by emphasizing positive aspects, opportunities and contributions of the course. The most prominent findings are that the course enabled them to gain different perspectives, make evaluations based on different points of view and become critical thinkers. However, they mentioned about their negative experiences such as having difficulty in asking questions and getting meaningful inferences during the process.

Abstract:Considering the potential of special talented students, the importance of training them is increasing day by day. The perspectives of special talented students and their teachers regarding the concept of special talented are also effective in revealing students' potential. The aim of this study is to determine the opinions of the teachers and students in the Science and Art Center about the concept of special talented. The study was carried out with 20 teachers and 55 students in Science and Art Centers in Turkey in the 2019-2020 academic year. Case study, one of the qualitative research designs, was used. Participants were determined using accessible case sampling. A semi-structured interview form prepared by the researchers was used as a data collection tool. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze the data obtained as a result of the interviews. It has been tried to reflect the positive and negative aspects of special talented students from the perspective of teachers and students. As a result of this study, it has been determined that teachers and students in the Science and Art Center perceive the concept of special talented students as individuals who offer creative solutions to problems and who have a quick grasp. In addition, both students and teachers think that receiving education at Science and Art Centers makes positive contributions to students. Finally, different types of suggestions are made in order to increase the positive sides and eliminate the negative sides of special talented students. Article visualizations:
DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO THESIS PROCESS IN PRACTICE BASED ART EDUCATION IN REGARDS TO STUDENT TENDENCIES

Abstract:This paper is going to deal with thesis writing process and styles, in regards to student tendencies in graduate level art education. There are two levels in graduate level art education in academic manner in Turkey. One of them is Master of Arts or Master of Fine Arts level after undergraduate education and Proficiency in Art education after M.A or M.F.A process. In this paper I will focus on M.A or M.F.A level thesis writing process through my experience as an academic and former art student. The main reasons behind questioning thesis writing process and thesis styles is the different attitudes across departments of the same faculty and divergences between art faculties. The other reason is the tendencies of students as a very important determining factor in thesis writing. The outcomes will be gathered through my experiences and examination of written theses in various Fine Arts Faculties. The paper will also include thesis advisor’s observations, problems that they face with and solutions they invent.

Abstract:In recent years, technological advances had an impact on the field of education, and computer technologies were started to be used mainly in visual arts, architecture and planning departments in colleges. However, applications such as the use of conventional drawing tools and graphical techniques, sketching, drawing plans, sections, and elevations on paper and production of models are still prevalent in landscape architecture, architecture, interior design or planning departments. Digital technologies are also utilized as supplementary tools. The current article scrutinized student attitudes towards digital and conventional drawing methods in landscape architecture department environmental design studios and the impact of these techniques on the academic success in the course. The study was conducted with KTU Landscape Architecture Department students. Initially, an analysis of variance was conducted to determine whether there was a difference between student attitudes towards conventional and digital drawing techniques in environmental design studio. It was determined that there was a difference between the attitudes of the students between the items 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14, 15, 18, 20, 21, 22, 23 in the scale that contained statements (23 items) to measure student attitudes (p < .05), and no difference was observed between the student attitudes in remaining items (p > .05). The highest difference was found (F = 168.200) in item 23, followed by items 18 (F = 106,290), 10 (F = 104,533), and 14 (F = 103.292). In the second stage, to determine the effects of using digital or conventional drawing techniques in landscape design studio on the student achievement in the course, a quasi-experimental study was conducted with a pre-test post-test model with control group. It was determined that the pretest findings had a significant effect on both groups (p < .05). Digital and conventional drawing techniques that students learned in environmental design studio were correlated with their academic achievements and the difference between the groups was significant.

The relationship between critical thinking and emotional intelligence in nursing students: A longitudinal study

Abstract:Background: Emotional Intelligence and critical thinking are regarded as important traits that nurses have which may influence the quality of their work including clinical decision-making and reasoning ability and adoption of evidence-based practice and practice-based knowledge. Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate nursing students' critical thinking dispositions and emotional intelligence as an essential skill, over the course of the undergraduate nursing program. Design: A longitudinal design. Setting and participants: The research study was conducted as a longitudinal design. The target group of this study consists of 182 students studying at the faculty of nursing. Asymmetrical cluster sampling method has been applied to select the sample group and all students in their first academic year were included in the study. Method: Information Form, California Critical Thinking Disposition Scale and Emotional Intelligence Assessment Scale were used in order to collect data. The data was analyzed by using frequency, standard deviation, Kruskal Wallis and Bonferroni test. Results: There was no relationship between sub-dimensions of emotional intelligence respectively; awareness of emotions, empathy, social skills in the first academic year and critical thinking disposition and the end of academic year. A moderate correlation was found in the positive direction between the self-motivation at the beginning of the academic year and critical thinking disposition at the end of the final academic year. Conclusion: It is recommended that the nursing scholarship investigates the current issues on the subjects of emotional intelligence and critical thinking in detail, discuss different aspects of the subjects and debate over the criticisms. Briefly, the discussion should go beyond the scope of nursing and include different aspects.
The relationship between critical thinking skills and in‐class questioning behaviours of English language teaching students

Abstract:It is important that trainee teachers in the faculties of education should develop their critical thinking skills so that they can meet the expectations and needs of their profession. This study aimed at investigating the relationship between critical thinking skills and in‐class questioning behaviours of English Language Teaching (ELT) students at the Faculty of Education at Mugla University. The authors attempted to find out answers to the following questions: ‘What kinds of questions do students in lower and higher critical thinking groups ask?’ and ‘Is there a difference between the questions of students with higher and lower critical thinking scores?’ Three data collection instruments were used: Ennis‐Weir Critical Thinking Essay Test; a reading passage; and a structured interview. The findings obtained suggest that the questions asked by the students of the higher critical thinking score group are not questions that clarify unclear points, but questions asked out of curiosity, to remove the uncertainties, and to lead people to think profoundly. Moreover, these students ask questions to find alternatives, to think the reverse and to head for new ideas. The students in the higher score group experienced thinking processes more intensively than the lower score group.

Abstract:In this study, we explored possible differences between students studying the fine arts and their non-art major peers on three separate variables: mental health, stress, and time spent on academic work. We found that students who study the fine arts report higher rates of mental distress, stress, and spend more time on academic work than do their non-art major peers. We offer recommendations for therapists working in university and college counseling settings.

Abstract:Picture book illustrations can provide the opportunity for critical examination of a work of art. There is a growing body of research focusing on how we can respond creatively to the illustrations in picture books as art objects. This study aimed to reveal how children interpret art elements based on various artistic techniques within picture books and how children use these elements when interpreting their own stories. In line with this aim, three picture books for preschool children were examined together along with a study group of four children attending summer school in a private kindergarten in the province of Ankara, Turkey. The research observations were recorded via photographs, audio-video recordings, and written notes. Qualitative data related to the children's interpretations of art elements in the picture book illustrations were analysed descriptively. The results showed that the children paid closest attention to the elements of colour and shape within picture books, and that these art elements were also those that they placed the strongest emphasis on in their own work.
