Abstract:Developing stable photoelectrochemistry (PEC) glucose biosensors with high sensitivity and a low detection limit is highly desirable in the biosensor field. Herein, a highly sensitive and stable enzymatic glucose PEC biosensor is rationally designed and fabricated using a TiO2NTs/Au/Pt/GOx electrode. First, we prepared one-dimensional TiO2 nanotube arrays which could realize the orthogonalization of the light-incident direction and the carrier diffusion direction via anodization. Subsequently, we used the method of photoassisted deposition for anchoring Pt nanoparticles on TiO2NTs after electrodepositing Au nanoparticles. Among them, Au nanoparticles promote light absorption via the surface plasmon resonance effect and the separation of photogenerated carriers through forming a Schottky junction. Moreover, the Pt nanoparticles on the electrode surface can react with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generated from glucose (Glu) oxidation by glucose oxidase (GOx), accelerating the electron-transfer process during glucose oxidation and greatly improving the sensitivity of the glucose biosensor. As a result, TiO2NTs/Au/Pt/GOx exhibited excellent PEC performance, achieving a high sensitivity of 81.93 μA mM-1 cm-2 and a low detection limit (1.39 μM), far exceeding the performance of TiO2NTs/M/GOx (M = Au, Pt). Therefore, the introduction of Pt nanoparticles as active substances to promote enzymatic reactions is important for designing high-performance enzyme biosensors.
An Enzyme-Free Photoelectrochemical Glucose Sensor Based on Coupling BiVO4 with Gold Nanoparticles

Abstract:A cathodic photoelectrochemical glucose biosensor based on the Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) and BiVO4 modified indium tin oxide (ITO) photoelectmde was developed successfully. The prepared ITO/AuNPs/BiVO4 photoelectrode showed a large and stable cathodic photocurrent in the presence of oxygen as electron acceptor. Moreover, it could act as mimic glucose oxidase under visible light irradiation and catalytically oxidized glucose to produce gluconic acid and H2O2 in the presence of O-2. Meanwhile, the cathodic photocurrent decreased markedly because of simultaneous combination of the glucose oxidation and consumption of oxygen. Under the optimized condition, a linear relationship between photocurrent decrease and glucose concentration was obtained over the range of 1nM to 1 mM with a detection limit of 2.6 x 10(-)(10) M (S/N = 3). This PEC biosensor shows a good selectivity, stability, repeatability and high sensitivity. This work provides a promising method for constructing a new type of cathode photochemical biosensor based on nanomaterials.
Photoelectrochemical Enzymatic Sensor for Glucose Based on Au@C/TiO2 Nanorod Arrays.

Abstract:In this work, a photoelectrochemical (PEC) glucose biosensor was synthesized on the basis of a type of Au@C/TiO2 composite by using an unsophisticated secondary hydrothermal strategy. The compounded Au@C/TiO2 material was characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, UV-vis, and XPS to identify the composition and the purity of the phase. Glucose oxidase (GODx) was immobilized on the Au@C/TiO2. The PEC biosensor presented satisfactory stability and outstanding reproducibility. The range and the sensitivity of the linear measurement were 0.1-1.6 mM and 29.76 μA mM-1 cm-2, respectively, and the detection limit was low (0.049 mM). The GODx/Au@C/TiO2/FTO biosensor presented excellent efficiency in detecting glucose, suggesting the great potential application of this synthesized material in PEC biosensors.
Optical and Photoelectrochemical Sensing of Glucose Based on Au Nanohole Arrays Coupled with TiO2/Al Films

Abstract:The mainstream technology used in commercial glucose sensors is enzymatic electrochemical sensing. Although the use of enzymatic electrodes can specifically detect glucose, this sensor has many deficiencies such as large environmental impacts, complex enzyme-modification processes and relatively high cost. Constructing well-designed metal nanostructures can excite environment-dependent surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and generate hot electrons. By monitoring the central wavelength shift of SPR and collecting the photocurrent generated from the hot electrons, label-free, enzyme-free, optical and photoelectrochemical (PEC) dual-mode sensing of glucose can be realized. Here, we combine magnetron sputtering, thermal treatment, nanosphere lithography, electron beam evaporation and lift-off processes to fabricate hexagonally-arranged gold nanohole arrays (Au NHAs) with adjustable diameters on aluminum (Al)/titanium dioxide (TiO2) film substrates, and constructed an enzyme-free glucose sensor based on the Al/TiO2/Au NHAs structure. The sensor is demonstrated to work in both optical sensing and PEC sensing modes. For optical sensing mode, the shift of the SPR peak corresponding to the glucose concentration range of 0–10 mM is observed, with an optical sensing sensitivity of 857 nm/RIU. For PEC sensing mode, the sensor at zero bias shows a linear range of 1 µM– 10 mM for glucose detection under simulated one-sun illumination, along with the detection of limit down to 1 µM and the photocurrent sensing sensitivity of 0.53×logC µA μM-1 cm-2 (where C is the molar concentration of glucose). Furthermore, the as-prepared glucose sensor also shows good stability and specific selection for glucose detection.

Abstract:Nanoporous gold (NPG) is composed of three-dimensional (3D) bicontinuous nanostructures with large surface area. Nano-channels inside NPG provide an ideal local environment for immobilization of enzyme molecules with expected stabilization of the protein molecules. In this work, glucose oxidase (GOx) has been brought to assemble on NPG via surface chemical reactions to form enzyme modified NPG nanomaterial with promising sensitivity for glucose detection. Cyclic voltammetry and single-potential step chronoamperometry (SPSC) are employed to study the electrochemical behavior of both bare and enzyme-modified NPG. Two redox mediators, p-benzoquinone (BQ) and ferrocenecarboxylic acid (FCA) are used to shuttle electrons between the enzyme redox center inside of GOx and the NPG electrode. Diffusion patterns at the functionalized NPG electrode are found significantly different from those on planar gold electrodes. This is mainly caused by internal 3D single crystal-like structures of NPG. Electrostatically neutral BQ mediator gives much higher voltammetric sensitivity than negatively charged FCA for GOx modified NPG electrodes.This study provides insight into the understanding of the intrinsic properties of NPG materials aiming at evolving enzymatic biosensors with high performance.

Abstract:A kind of dealloyed nanoporous gold (NPG)/ultrathin CuO film nanohybrid for non-enzymatic glucose sensing has been prepared by a simple, in-situ, time-saving and controllable two-step electrodeposition. The three-dimensional and bicontinuous nanoporous structure of the nanocomposites have been characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the electrochemical tests have been estimated by cyclic voltammetry and single potential step chronoamperometry (SPSC). The optimal NPG/CuO electrode exhibits great electrocatalytic activity towards glucose oxidation and also shows obvious linear response to glucose up to 12mM with a high sensitivity of 374.0µAcm−2mM−1 and a good detection limit of 2.8µM (S/N=3), as well as strong tolerance against chloride poisoning and interference of ascorbic acid and uric acid.

Abstract:The sluggish kinetic-controlled glucose oxidation reaction on Pt electrodes is well recognized as the most critical issue that blocks the development and commercialization of enzyme-free glucose sensors, and increasing attention is being focused on improving the analytical performances of these nonenzymatic sensors through exploring new Pt-based catalysts. In the present research, we synthesized novel Pt-Pd nanoflakes (Pt-Pd NFs) with three-dimensional architectures on a homemade screen-printed gold film electrode (SPGFE) substrate using a facile electrochemical deposition without any template, and further investigated the properties of the as-fabricated Pt-Pd NFs/SPGFE for enzymeless glucose detection. The results reveal that the proposed Pt-Pd nanostructure can provide preeminent electrocatalytic activity and excellent selectivity for enzyme-free glucose sensing under simulative physiological conditions, mainly attributing to its attractive structure, large active surface and appropriate applied potential. The resulting Pt-Pd NFs/SPGFE offers linear current responses for glucose with the concentration upper limit to 16 mM. The obtained sensitivity is calculated to be as high as 48.0 mu A cm(-2) mM(-1) in the presence of 0.15 M chlorides ions, and practical applications for blood sample analysis are also demonstrated. The proposed Pt-Pd structure is considered as a great potential building block for the fabrication of nonenzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A new photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform comprising TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiONTAs), polyaniline (PANI), and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was successfully fabricated. After loading the enzyme, this Au-PANI-TiONTA electrode showed excellent response to glucose at a linear range of 2-36 mM with a 0.02 mM detection limit. Good PEC performance was obtained due to the following advantages of the material: high visible-light harvesting ability for excellent light trapping capacity of PANI and AuNPs, good separation of the photo-induced charges related to the specific Au-PANI-TiONTA heterostructure, efficient electrode surface reaction kinetics derived from the large specific surface area of TiONTAs and improved electrode catalytic activity. This work proposed a new and general PEC enzymatic format and can be extended to prepare different PEC biosensors for biomolecules such as DNA, proteins and substrates of oxidases.
Study on Enzyme-Free Glucose Sensor Based on Au and CuO Co-Modified TiO2 Films for Photoelectrochemical Detection

Abstract:Currently, widely used glucose sensors rely on enzyme catalysts, which suffer from issues such as enzyme inactivation, high production costs, and insufficient stability. To address these challenges, this study fabricated TiO2 films on Ti sheets using radio frequency magnetron sputtering and subsequently modified Au nanoparticles (NPs) and CuO films via direct current magnetron sputtering. Then, Au and CuO co-modified TiO2 (CuO-Au@TiO2) photoelectrode with a Z-type band structure was prepared, enabling enzyme-free glucose detection via photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing technology. The optimized photoelectrode exhibited high sensitivity for glucose detection, with values of 7300 μA μM-1 cm-2 (0–1 mM) and 500 μA μM-1 cm-2 (1–10 mM) under AM 1.5G illumination at a bias of 0.2 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). The detection limit was determined to be 58.14 μM (Signal/Noise = 3), with excellent stability, repeatability, and selectivity. Spectral and PEC performance analyses revealed that the outstanding sensing performance of the CuO-Au@TiO2 photoelectrode can be attributed to: (1) unique Z-Type band structure promoting carrier separation; (2) the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect induced by Au NPs enhancing light absorption; (3) CuO can undergo a specific enzyme-like catalytic reaction with glucose molecules under alkaline conditions. This research offers a novel, convenient, and accurate monitoring approach for diabetes management and prevention.

Abstract:A novel nonenzymatic glucose sensor, based on gold nanoparticle-modified indium tin oxide electrode (Au/ITO) with ion implantation technique, is presented in this article. Ion implantation method is simple, low-cost and environmental friendly without using any of other chemicals. Through this method, the ITO substrate can be modified by gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) directly. The fabricated electrode was characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis (XPS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Electrochemical oxidation of glucose with Au/ITO electrode was examined by CV in alkaline aqueous solution. The modified electrode exhibits good electrochemical behavior towards glucose, providing a wide linear range of 1∼170μM and 0.2∼15mM and a low detection limit with 0.4μM. Moreover, this glucose sensor displays acceptable reproducibility and long-term stability. These results indicate that Au/ITO electrode makes it promising for the fabrication of nonenzymatic glucose sensors.

Abstract:A novel nonenzymatic glucose sensor based on flower-shaped (FS) Au@Pd core–shell nanoparticles–ionic liquids (ILs i.e., trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide, [P(C6)3C14][Tf2N]) composite film modified glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) was reported. The Au@Pd nanocatalysts were prepared by seed-mediated growth method, forming the three-dimensional FS nanoparticles, where tens of small Pd nanoparticles (∼3nm) aggregated on gold seeds (∼20nm). The FS Au@Pd nanoparticle was a good candidate for the catalytic efficiency of nanometallic surfaces because of its flower-shaped nature, which has greater adsorption capacity. XPS analysis and zeta potential indicated that the surface of Pd atoms is positively charged, profiting the oxidation process of glucose. And ILs acted as bridge connecting Au@Pd one another and bucky gel as platform within the whole nanocomposite. So the modified electrode has higher sensitivity and selectivity owing to intrinsic synergistic effects of this nanocomposite. Amperometric measurements allow observation of the electrochemical oxidation of glucose at 0.0V (vs. Ag/AgCl), the glucose oxidation current is linear to its concentration in the range of 5nM–0.5μM, and the detection limit was found to be 1.0nM (S/N=3). The as-prepared nonenzyme glucose sensor exhibited excellent stability, repeatability, and selectivity.

Abstract:We report the detection of non-enzyme electrochemical glucose using nanoporous gold (NPG) as electrodes. The free-standing NPG films showed a robust and sensitive current response to glucose. The effects of pore sizes, detecting potentials and chloride ions on glucose oxidation were systematically investigated. NPG with a smaller pore size possesses higher sensitivity. In addition, the NPG electrodes can effectively avoid interference from the oxidation of common organic interferents in body liquids. Immobilization of glucose oxidase on gold nanoparticles modified Au electrode for the construction of biosensor

Abstract:A novel method to fabricate glucose biosensor was developed by immobilizing glucose oxidase (GOx) on gold nanoparticles, which had self-assembled on Au electrode modified with thiol-containing three-dimensional network of silica gel. The assembly process was followed and confirmed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), which indicated that the gold nanoparticles in the biosensing interface efficiently improved the electron transfer between analyte and electrode surface. The immobilized enzyme on the electrode surface exhibits excellent catalytic activities for the oxidation of glucose when soluble redox mediator ferrocenemethanol was present. The coverage of electrically wired active GOx (ΓE0) at the enzyme electrode surface was evaluated high to be 4.5×10−12molcm−2 on the basis of kinetic models reported in literature. Moreover, this sensor exhibited fast amperometric response (3s) to the mediated electrocatalyzed oxidation of glucose, and the catalytic current is proportional to the concentration of glucose up to 6mM with a high sensitivity of 8.3μAmM−1cm−2. The detection limit of the sensor was estimated to be 23μM. In addition, the sensor has good reproducibility, and can remain stable over 60 days.
Biosensor based on glucose oxidase-nanoporous gold co-catalysis for glucose detection

Abstract:Promoting the electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose is crucial in glucose biosensor design. In this study, nanoporous gold (NPG) was selected for glucose oxidase (GOx) immobilization and glucose biosensor fabrication because of its open, highly conductive, biocompatible, and interconnected porous structure, which also facilitates the electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose. The electrochemical reaction on the surface of the resulting GOx/NPG/GCE bioelectrode was attributed to the co-catalysis effect of GOx and NPG. A surface-confined reaction in a phosphate buffer solution was observed at the bioelectrode during cyclic voltammetry experiments. Linear responses were observed for large glucose concentrations ranging from 50μM to 10mM, with a high sensitivity of 12.1μAmM(-1)cm(-2) and a low detection limit of 1.02μM. Furthermore, the GOx/NPG/GCE bioelectrode presented strong anti-interference capability against cholesterol, urea, tributyrin, ascorbic acid, and uric acid, along with a long shelf-life. For the detection of glucose in human serum, the data generated by the GOx/NPG/GCE bioelectrode were in good agreement with those produced by an automatic biochemical analyzer. These unique properties make the GOx/NPG/GCE bioelectrode an excellent choice for the construction of a glucose biosensor.

Abstract:We develop a unique ternary Pd–Ni–P nanocatalyst for the sensitive enzymefree electrooxidation detection of glucose under alkaline conditions. By reducing the distance between the Pd and Ni active sites in the Pd–Ni–P nanoparticles (NPs) via atom engineering, the catalyst structure is transformed from Pd@Ni–P dumbbells into spherical NPs, greatly enhancing the catalyst sensitivity. The glassy carbon electrode modified with Pd–Ni–P ternary NPs, which behaves as an efficient nonenzymatic glucose sensor, offers excellent electrocatalytic performance with a high sensitivity of 1,136 μA·mM −1 ·cm −2 , a short response time of 2 s, a wide linear range of 0.5 μM to 10.24 mM, a low limit of detection of 0.15 μM (signal-to-noise ratio = 3), and good selectivity and reproducibility. Moreover, owing to its superior catalytic performance, the Pd–Ni–P modified electrode has excellent reliability for glucose detection in real samples of human serum. Our study provides a promising alternative strategy for designing and constructing high-performance multicomponent nanocatalyst-based sensors.
Bienzymatic glucose biosensor based on direct electrochemistry of cytochrome c on gold nanoparticles/polyaniline nanospheres composite.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) assembled polyaniline nanospheres (PANS) composite were prepared by noncovalent strategy. Cytochrome c (Cyt c) was electrostatically adsorbed on the GNPs/PANS modified electrode. The direct electron transfer (DET) between Cyt c and GNPs/PANS modified electrode was investigated. Cyt c shows a couple of quasi-reversible and well-defined cyclic voltammetry (CV) peaks with a formal potential (E0′) of −0.27V (versus Ag/AgCl) in pH 7.0 phosphate buffer solution (PBS). The Cyt c/GNPs/PANS modified electrode gives an improved electrocatalytic activity toward the reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The catalysis currents increase linearly to the H2O2 concentration in a wide range of 0.01–2.4mM with a correlation coefficient 0.998. After immobilized glucose oxidase (GOD) on the Cyt c/GNPs/PANS modified electrode by Nafion polymer, a bienzymatic glucose biosensor was further prepared for sensitive detection of glucose. The amperometric detection of glucose was assayed by potentiostating the bienzymatic electrode at −0.2V versus Ag/AgCl to reduce the enzymatically produced H2O2 with minimal interference from the coexisting electroactive compounds. The proposed glucose biosensor exhibits good response performance to glucose with a wide linear range from 0.01 to 3.2mM with a correlation coefficient of 0.997. The electrode has high sensitivity of 63.1μAmM−1cm−2 and a detection limit 0.01mM at the signal-to-noise ratio of 3. Moreover, the glucose biosensor possesses good stability and reproducibility.

Herein, a highly stable and sensitive enzymatic glucose photoelectrochemical biosensor is rationally designed and fabricated by constructing TiO2/PDA core/shell nanorod arrays. The TiO2 nanorod as the core has the advantages of increasing charge transportation towards interfaces and enhancing the absorption of incident sunlight due to its single-crystal nature and one dimensional array structure. The PDA shell not only induces a rapid charge transfer across the interfaces but also stabilizes the biosensor performance by avoiding the decomposition of enzymes induced by the strong oxidizing holes from the TiO2 core. A remarkable performance with an ultrahigh sensitivity of 57.72 μA mM-1 cm-2, a linear range of 0.2-1.0 mM, a glucose detection limit of 0.0285 mM (S/N = 3) and a high sensitivity of 8.75 μA mM-1 cm-2 in a dynamic range of 1.0-6.0 mM were obtained for the glucose detection. This study might provide a strategy for constructing inorganic/organic core/shell structures with a satisfactory PEC performance.

Abstract:A novel photoelectrode for glucose PEC biosensing composed of TiONTAs, PANI, and AuNPs was successfully obtained. The GOx@Au–PANI–TiONTA electrode exhibited a wide response range (2–36 mM) with a low detection limit (0.02 mM) and good stability.

Abstract:TiO2 single-crystal nanomaterials with highly reactive surfaces have attracted widespread attention due to their fundamental aspects and industrial applications. However, many previous studies have ignored the poor photoelectric efficiency of TiO2 nanomaterials originating from a mismatch in the diffusion distance of electrons and holes as well as migration rates of holes and electrons. Therefore, suppression of hole migration could enhance the photoelectrochemical performance of TiO2. In this work, single-crystal anatase TiO2 nanomaterials with (001) facets were successfully prepared. The results suggested that some (101) facets were retained by the modified fluoride ion crystal facet control process. Subsequently, fluorine-free and Au-containing crystal facets were obtained by annealing and electrochemical deposition. In addition, the propensity for adsorption of Au on a TiO2 (101) surface was verified by first-principles quantum chemical calculations. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and UV–visible spectrophotometry showed the presence of a large area (001), conducive to better enzyme affinity. Biosensors prepared by carrier self-separation derived from natural different facets and Au nanoparticles (TiO2 (001)/Au/GOx) achieved high sensitivities reaching 16.86 μA mM–1 cm–2, an extended linear range (0.01–3 mM), and a low detection limit (0.83 μM). In summary, the proposed route allowed for the first time the use of nanocrystal engineering in the construction of glucose biosensors with satisfactory performances, which is promising for the future fabrication of high-performance biosensors.
