Abstract:The aim of this study is to examine the writing performance of the primary school fourth-grade students in relation to the student-level variables (writing, reading comprehension, self-regulation-based writing, writing motivation, and writing anxiety) and classroom-level (teacher) variables (knowledge of text-writing instruction and text-writing instruction self-efficacy beliefs). The data were collected from Zonguldak, Turkey in 2019-2020 academic year. Correlational research method was used in the study, which consisted of 734 fourth-grade students at primary school and 31 classroom teachers. The data collection tools included the Story Text and Informative Text Assessment Analytical Rubric, Writing Achievement Test, Reading Comprehension Test, Self-Regulation-Based Writing Scale, Writing Motivation Scale, Writing Anxiety Scale, and Text-Writing Instruction Form for Classroom Teachers, and Text-Writing Instruction Self-Efficacy Beliefs Scale. A two-level Hierarchical Linear Modelling (HLM) analysis was performed on the data. The results showed that students’ writing knowledge, reading comprehension level and self-regulation-based writing skills play a significant role on their writing performance. The student-level variables examined in this study account for the text-writing performance of students by 24%. The study presents the results based on the findings and recommendations based on the results.
The Effect of Digital Stories on Primary School Students' Listening Comprehension Skills

Abstract:The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of digital stories on the listening comprehension skills of primary school 4th grade students. For this purpose, the research has carried out with a quasi-experimental design with pre-test post-test control group. The sample of the research consisted of 52 students studying in two different 4th grade branches of a public primary school in the second semester of the 2018-2019 academic year. The stories transferred to digital in the research have selected from the texts in 3 different Turkish textbooks at the 4th grade level of primary school published by the Ministry of National Education and taught to students in previous years. 8 narrative texts from the themes of "My Beautiful Country Turkey" and "Production, Consumption and Efficiency" in the textbooks have converted into digital through digital design programs. During the implementation process, the animations of 8 stories transferred to digital have watched by the students in the experimental group, and the students in the control group have read and listened to the same story texts by the teacher. The Listening Comprehension Test has used to determine the listening comprehension achievement scores of the students in the experimental and control groups at the beginning and end of the application process. As a result of the research, it has determined that there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test achievement scores of the students in the experimental group, where the stories have played digitally.

Abstract:Writing is the starting point of a lesson that continues on to the next lesson. Writing skills are said to be high-level skills that must be trained through various writing exercises and then expressed in written language, such as in narrative texts. In the activity of writing narrative texts, the difficulties experienced by students were due to not being used to writing essays. Therefore, the problems above need to be overcome so as to increase students' interest in making narrative texts. The solution developed by the researcher is through the use of serial picture media, so that students can develop skills in writing narrative text covering aspects of content, structure, and language. The purpose of this research in general is to describe the results of writing narrative texts from the use of picture series media made by students of class V SD. This study uses a context-based descriptive analysis research method using a qualitative approach. This is because the data obtained will be examined and analysed as it is by described it in words. Based on the results of the study, some of the fifth grade students at SDN 1 Cikukulu were already able to compose narrative texts through the use of serial picture media seen from the results of their writing. Based on the results of the first assignment and the results of the second assignment there was an increase from an average of 6.3 to 8.15 which was obtained from the results of the students' writing.
First and Fourth Grade Boys' and Girls' Preferences For and Perceptions About Narrative and Expository Text

Abstract:This investigation focused on elementary-aged (first and fourth grade) children's individual preferences for narrative and expository text and perceptions of what their same-aged peers would like to read. Preferences and perceptions of text were examined through the lenses of social constructivist and engaged reading theories. The overall purpose of this study was to examine elementary students' preferences for and perceptions about narrative and expository text. This study was a systematic replication and extension of Chapman, Filipenko, McTavish, and Shapiro's (2007) research in British Columbia with first graders. Two individually administered book preference (Open and Closed) tasks and interviews were administered to 84 students. Findings revealed gender and grade level profiles in terms of preferences, perceptions, and rationales for their book choices. As expected, both first and fourth grade boys demonstrated a strong preference for expository text, however, the fourth grade boys also showed a growing preference for narrative text as well. In contrast, both first and fourth grade girls demonstrated a strong preference for both narrative and expository text. For both boys and girls, book topic and pictures/illustrations were the two top categories that drew the children's interest and resulted in the most conversations. Results are discussed in light of implications for instruction, assessment, and future research.
Development of Non-Fiction Text Digital Learning Media in Narrative Writing Skills for Fourth Grade Elementary School Students

Abstract:This development research was carried out improve the learning outcomes of Indonesian students learning non-fiction text material in narrative writing skills in fourth grade students. This type of research is a Research and Development with Prestest-Posttest One Group Design, using the 4D development model which includes four stages, namely Define, Design, Development and Dissemination. Research respondents of this research are fourth grade. The instrument used a validation questionnaire, observation, practicality questionnaires and learning outcomes tests. Results of this research indicate that the validation of the material obtained 89.4% and the validation of the media obtained 100%. The practicality of the teacher's questionnaire got a percentage of 95%, while the student questionnaire got a percentage of 98.6%, the results of teacher and student observations obtained a percentage of 92.85% and 95%. The effectiveness based on giving pretest and posttest to students totaled 25 students with an average pretest result of 79.52 while the average posttest was 91.96. The result of the t-count is -11.085 and the probability of 0.000 which shows that there is a significant difference in the value of the narrative writing skills of fourth grade elementary school students using the development of non-fiction text digital-based learning media.

Picture in Children's Story Books: Children's Perspective

Abstract:The aim of this study is to collect and analyze children's comments on the pictures in children's story books. Four students studied in the first grade of a public primary school in Adana participated in the study. The research model is an example of phenomenology among qualitative research patterns. Focus group method was used as the data collection tool and observation method was used in a second exercise to support the first method. In focus group discussion "The City on the Wind" by Behic Ak, selected as the Book 1, was reviewed along with 4 participating students. In the second exercise, the book named "The Little Match Girl" selected as Book 2 was reviewed. Descriptive analysis and document analysis methods were used in the analysis of the research data. Students' comments on the pictures were collected under four different themes. "Description" among these themes was the most common in student expressions. The sentences for the themes of superficial interpretation, imaginative interpretation and critical understanding were less frequently used by students. Another finding of the study is the number of words students used to describe the picture. Students built short sentences not exceeding 2-3 words.

Abstract:The aims of this research are to find out the class situation and to know the advancement of students’ ability in the application of teaching writing narrative text by means of picture series. In the classroom, students frequently gripe and say if the teacher grants them the task to write in English, they could not do it even when there have not begun yet. They do not have self-confident, feeling afraid of doing wrong, do not know what to scribe and way to get started. For those reasons the teacher conducted Classroom Action Research through picture series, such as Cinderella and The Three Little Pigs as a medium of teaching Narrative Text. In collecting data, researchers used interview and test. The test is done before the action (pre-test) or cycle I and after the action (post-test) or cycle II. The outcome of the study show that which exists positive improvement in students' writing skills and classroom situation during teaching and studying process. Test results increased, from the initial test (done before the action) to posttests (done after the action). That the average value of the test outcome is 74. The highest value acquisition of disciples in the early condition is 80, and the lowest worth is 70. While in cycle II (final condition) the average value of students increases to 90, after the teacher uses media images, the highest score of disciples in the final condition is 94, and the lowest score is 88.

Abstract:In today’s world where technology develops rapidly and young people keep up with this technology, students should both improve their digital literacy and make their learning permanent. Digital storytelling is also a method where the student is active in the learning environment and improves his technological literacy. The present study aims to investigate the use of digital storytelling method in values education in primary school fourth grade. The study was conducted with a case study design, one of the qualitative research methods. The participants of the study consist of 31 students studying in the fourth grade of a primary school in the northwest of Turkey in the spring semester of the 2018-2019 academic year. The data were collected through observations, semi-structured interviews with students and teachers, products produced in the digital storytelling process, and the diaries kept by the second author and students. The descriptive analysis method was used for the analysis of the data. The data obtained in the digital storytelling stages were analyzed using students’ products, video recordings, observations, and the diaries kept by students and the second author while the data obtained from the interviews were analyzed by showing themes, sub-themes, frequencies, and percentages in tables. As the results indicated, the students expressed that their use of technology and story writing skills developed during the digital story process and that they liked dubbing and the picture drawing processes but experienced difficulties due to not being equipped. In addition they underlined that the story presentations allowed them to reinforce and internalize their knowledge about the value of justice.

Research on Narrative Reading Teaching Strategies in Upper Elementary Grades of Elementary Chinese Textbooks under the Concept of Learning Task Groups

Abstract:This study delves into the strategies of teaching narrative text reading in higher grades of primary school under the Unified Edition Chinese Textbook, guided by the concept of Learning Task Groups. The concept, a novel educational approach, emphasizes designing a series of interconnected, progressively deepening learning tasks to stimulate students' interest in learning and foster their comprehensive thinking and learning abilities. Through methods such as questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations, the study comprehensively analyzes the current state of narrative text reading instruction in higher grades. It highlights the challenges faced by teachers in designing and implementing learning tasks and proposes targeted improvement strategies. The implementation of the Learning Task Groups concept, as evidenced by specific case studies and practices, has been shown to effectively enhance students' reading comprehension, language expression, and innovative and critical thinking abilities. Despite challenges like limited resources and individual differences among students, the study suggests that enhancing teachers' professional capabilities and optimizing educational resources can further promote the effectiveness of teaching strategies. Finally, the paper provides comprehensive suggestions for education policymakers, educators, and frontline teachers, emphasizing the need to focus on the holistic development of students, advocating innovative teaching methods, and improve the quality of education to nurture well-rounded individuals equipped with critical thinking, innovative capabilities, and a sense of social responsibility.

Abstract:The aim of this research is to find out how activity-based digital storytelling affects the writing and digital storytelling-making skills of gifted students. In this research, which is designed as an action research, the researcher was the practitioner and also the conductor of the research. The research was conducted in the first semester of the 2018-2019 academic year in the Science and Art Center, where talented students were studying. The study group consists of 7 gifted third-grade students who continue the support education program. The implementation of the action plan took 10 weeks. The data were collected by Student Information Form, 6 + 1 Analytical Writing and Evaluation Scale, Digital Storytelling Evaluation Rubric, interview forms, researcher and student diary. According to the results of the study, the action plan applied improved the writing skills of the students. It was observed that the writing skills of the students improved according to the scores of the students during the pre-evaluation and final evaluation and application process. It was seen that the digital story formation skills of the students improved during the pre-evaluation and final evaluation and application process. According to the opinions of the students, it was determined that with the activity-based digital storytelling activities, the students learned how to write the text types, they liked writing and they found the studies entertaining and these studies improved their writing skills. In addition, it was that writing activities make writing easier, develop imagination, and digital storytelling studies also helped to see and correct errors in writing, and to write more attentive and carefully. In this study, in which action research was used, as the results are not generalized, the activity-based digital storytelling studies can be applied with different methods and the results can be investigated. Abstract:Students meet the concept of a fairy tale in the second grade of elementary school. They get acquainted with the folk tale and its characteristics. Folk tales have stereotypical beginnings, frequent numbers 3,5,7,9,12, supernatural and miraculous beings appear, the main character always has to cross several obstacles in order to achieve the goal, they always end happily, etc. Unlike folk tales, in which the author is unknown, in autros, the writer is known exactly, they do not always end happily, the characters mostly have names and the psychological and physical structure of the characters is more developed. By comparing and analyzing, students notice the differences and similarities of folk and aturous fairy tales. Understanding a fairy tale in the right way depends on the analysis itself, but also on how it is presented in textbooks. The aim of this paper is to present, analyze and compare folk and author's fairy tales in textbooks from different publishers for the 4th grade.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to determine the types of translation techniques used by SMK Yapalis Krian class X AK 3 students in Narrative text section of the english class. Narrative texts were chosen because they contain stories with a chronological sequence that are interconnected and come in a variety of genres, allowing students to translate and work on the Narrative text problems in a variety ways. This study employs a descriptive design, with data collected through observation and the subject filling out a questionnaire page online. Data were taken from students of class X AK 3 SMK Yapalis Krian. The findings show that students use the methods of analysis, transfer and restructuring sequentially. Students who do not use appropriate stages and only use one or two stages as the second most common translation process.

Abstract:This study examined children's use of narrative strategies and social purposes in dramatic play through a sociocultural theoretical lens. We analysed language and nonverbal communication in play scenarios involving 17 kindergarteners and their teacher. Children used language and other communication modes to develop plot, character, and setting. Children provided information, asked questions and regulated others' behaviour to develop and support plot. Character development was achieved through expressing needs, feelings and opinions. The teacher supported children's narrative development by providing cultural knowledge. Findings show dramatic play to be an authentic context for observing children's knowledge of narrative development and supporting literacy.

Abstract:The level of understanding of reading English narrative texts at the junior high school level still needs to be given extra learning. There are many factors that prevent students from understanding the narrative text, one of which is students who have difficulty understanding English words in narrative texts. This study uses the theory of constructivism, namely two-way learning carried out by the teacher and the students in the class. This research uses a qualitative method, in which the researcher uses research by means of classroom observations, and interviews in an effort to obtain data at school. The participants in this study were eighth grade students in one of the public schools in Bekasi Regency, West Java. The selected students are representatives of several students in the learning group. The results of this study are, there are some students who still do not master and understand the narrative legend text using constructivism techniques.

Abstract:This study aims to determine the opinions of elementary school teachers and 3rd and 4th-grade students regarding the use of educational digital games in educational activities in the classroom. In today’s world, where technology is constantly evolving and renewing, and digital media and materials take a larger share in our lives, instructional activities are also influenced by these advancements. The case study design, which is one of the qualitative research designs, was preferred in this study and semi-structured interview forms were used for the data collection process. Interviews were conducted with 30 elementary school teachers (18 female and 12 male) working in state schools in the Kavak district of Samsun province during the 2021-2022 academic year and 30 students in the 3rd and 4th grades (15 female and 15 male) studying in those state schools. The criterion sampling method, one of the purposeful sampling methods, was used in selecting the study group. In this context, attention was paid to select teachers, who use educational digital games in their classrooms and are willing to participate in the research. The data obtained in the research were analyzed using the content analysis method. The results achieved in this study indicate that educational digital games used in the classroom facilitate students’ learning, increase their attention spans, and contribute to quick thinking and decision-making. Recommendations include the necessity for teachers to receive training on digital content and the importance of identifying games, which are suitable for learning objectives, before implementing in-class games.

Abstract:Writing is one of the four language skills that should be mastered by students. The syllabus of SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Barat expects the students to be able to compiling the narrative text in the form of personal experience. The purpose of the research was describing the students’ writing ability in narrative text and the factors affecting it. The method used in the research was descriptive qualitative. The analysis of the data was conducted by following steps. Analyzing the quantitative data by using analytic scoring rubric from Glenceo namely, focus/organization, elaboration/support/style, and grammar and mechanics and analyzing the qualitative data through transcripts of structure interviews. Furthermore, the informant of the research was class VIII-A students of SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Barat which consisted of 20 students. The data were collected through documentary data of students’ worksheets and interview both students and English teacher. The result showed that the students’ ability in writing narrative text was in Good category (66 score). It is proved by the findings that there were 7 students (35%) included in ‘Excellent’ category, there were 4 students (20%) included ‘Good category, there were 3 students (15%) included ‘Fairy’ category and category included in ‘Poor’ were 6 students (30%). Furthermore, the factors that affect the students’ ability in writing narrative text were: students cognitive it was problem organization, less motivation, lack of grammar, lack of practice and the influence of the first language (L1) on writing in English.

Abstract:This research was conducted based on the problems found during the teaching and learning process in class IX IPS 1 of SMAN 1 Talamau, specifically about students' understanding of narrative text. The problem found is that students cannot determine the main ideas and topics in narrative text, understand the meaning of words, understand implied information, and understand the general structure and features of language in narrative texts.This research is included in quantitative descriptive research. The population in this study were students of class IX SMAN 1 Talamau, amounting to 159 people, divided into 4 classes. While this sample is class X8 of SMAN 8 Padang. The instrument used was an objective test. Data from students' objective tests are analyzed based on indicators and then interpreted and become research findings.Based on the results of the study showed that students of class IX IPS 1 SMAN 1 Talamau: 1. The ability to write students in determining the main ideas and topics in the narrative text showed at the intermediate level of 14 people out of 23 students (60,875%). 2. The ability to understand the meaning of words in the narrative text shows at the intermediate level that is 15 people out of 23 students (65.22%). 3. The ability to understand the information implicit in the narrative text shows that at the intermediate level, there are 14 out of 23 students (60.87%). 4. The ability to understand the general structure and language features of narrative texts shows that at the intermediate level, there are 16 students out of 23 students (69.57).From the results of the above research, it can be concluded that students still experience many difficulties in understanding a text, especially in narrative texts in accordance with applicable rules. Furthermore, based on the results of this study teachers are expected to be able to provide better teaching techniques and students can do more exercises to improve students' reading comprehension abilities.

Abstract:This article discusses of the teacher's ways and methods of teaching narrative text in English classes at the junior high school level. Learning English is not a prioritized language of communication, so learning literature is one of the teacher's problems in the classroom. Therefore, this article aims to find out the problems using narrative text and solutions to overcome them. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative through interviews with a teacher at SMPN 1 Kedunggalar. The results of the research indicated that the most obvious problem of using narrative text was the lack of students' understanding in several aspects such as: the meaning of vocabulary, sentences, and delivery during the lesson. Even though there are some problems faced by students, they will later gain knowledge of language both linguistics and introduction to new cultures when learning English using narrative text. This is all thanks to the teacher trying to create an interactive classroom atmosphere so that literature and language learning can be conveyed and well received.

Abstract:This study aims to determine the students’ ability of second grade SMP Talitakum to use personal pronouns in narrative text. The subject of this study are students of second grade and the object of this study was the students' ability to use pronouns in narrative text. The sample of this study are 16 students. Data collection techniques in this study use test and interviews. Based on the data analyzed, the researchers concluded that the students' ability to use pronouns in the narrative text was 68.43% and the students' ability to use personal pronouns in the narrative text is 62.93%. The study concludes that the difficulty affecting students in using pronouns was a lack of understanding of pronouns and narrative text even though they had been taught by the teacher and the lack of grammar books.
Developing narrative performance of 5–6-year-old children through combined use of narrative elements in their speech

Abstract:This paper aims to investigate to what extent preschoolers' narrative speech can be affected by the combined use of five narrative elements: narrative framing, narrative basic structure, intertextual hero, plot subversion and image–text interaction. It presents an intervention aiming to teach these elements to an experimental group of preschoolers, while a control group followed the regular curriculum. A novel evaluation tool, P.R.O.S.E, was designed to evaluate the level of the five elements' comprehension and use and applied to both groups. To assure regularity and homogeneity, the differences in performance were evaluated by the mixed-design two-way RM-ANOVA analysis. The performance of the experimental group after the intervention confirmed that the combined use of narrative elements can lead to the production of contemporary narrative types by 5–6-year-old children. Statistical analysis showed a notable differentiation of performance after the use of combined narrative elements. The empirical observation validates practices aiming at the development of narrative skill at preschool age, such as the particular teaching intervention which showed that 5–6-year-old children are capable of combining narrative elements in their narrative speech.

Investigation of Narrative Texts Used by Fourth Grade Primary School Students
