Abstract:Recent visible-wavelength observations of Europa's surface obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) revealed the presence of an absorption feature near 450 nm that appears spatially correlated with leading-hemisphere chaos terrain. This feature was interpreted to reflect the presence of irradiated sodium chloride ultimately sourced from the interior. Here, we use ultraviolet spectra also collected with the HST to detect an additional previously unseen absorption near 230 nm, which spatially correlates with the 450 nm feature and with the same leading-hemisphere chaos terrain. We find that the new ultraviolet feature is also well matched by irradiated sodium chloride at Europa-like conditions. Such confirmation of sodium chloride within geologically young regions has important implications for Europa's subsurface composition.

Abstract:The surface of Europa could contain the compositional imprint of an underlying interior ocean, but competing hypotheses differ over whether spectral observations from the Galileo spacecraft show the signature of ocean evaporates or simply surface radiation products unrelated to the interior. Using adaptive optics at the W. M. Keck Observatory, we have obtained spatially resolved spectra of most of the disk of Europa at a spectral resolution ∼40 times higher than seen by the Galileo spacecraft. These spectra show a previously undetected distinct signature of magnesium sulfate salts on Europa, but the magnesium sulfate is confined to the trailing hemisphere and spatially correlated with the presence of radiation products like sulfuric acid and SO2. On the leading, less irradiated, hemisphere, our observations rule out the presence of many of the proposed sulfate salts, but do show the presence of distorted water ice bands. Based on the association of the potential MgSO4 detection on the trailing side with other radiation products, we conclude that MgSO4 is also a radiation product, rather than a constituent of a Europa ocean brine. Based on ocean chemistry models, we hypothesize that, prior to irradiation, magnesium is primarily in the form of MgCl2, and we predict that NaCl and KCl are even more abundant, and, in fact, dominate the non-ice component of the leading hemisphere. We propose observational tests of this new hypothesis.

Abstract:Recent infrared observations at 1.5-4.0 $\mu m$ using large ground-based telescopes have suggested that Cl-bearing salts are likely present on Europa's surface as non-ice materials. The chemical compositions of those Cl-bearing salts are key to understanding Europa's ocean chemistry and habitability. Here we report the results of ground-based telescope observations of Europa across two wavelength ranges, 1.0-1.5 and 1.5-1.8 $\mu m$, of which the former range includes absorption features owing to some hydrated Cl-bearing salts. We obtained spatially resolved reflectance spectra using the Subaru Telescope/IRCS and the adaptive optics system AO188 with high wavelength resolutions ($\delta \lambda$ ~ 2 nm for 1.0-1.5 $\mu m$ and $\delta \lambda$ ~ 0.9 nm for 1.5-1.8 $\mu m$) and low noise levels (1$\sigma$ ~ 1-2 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$). We found no clear absorption features at ~1.2 $\mu$m caused by hydrated Cl-bearing salts. We estimated that conservative upper limits to the abundances of MgCl$_2$$\cdot$nH$_2$O, NaClO$_4$$\cdot$2H$_2$O, Mg(ClO$_3$)$_2$$\cdot$6H$_2$O, and Mg(ClO$_4$)$_2$$\cdot$6H$_2$O on Europa are 17% (<10% for most) at the 3$\sigma$ noise level. These values are lower than the proposed abundance of some hydrated Cl-bearing salts (> ~20%) on Europa based on previous observations. This supports the idea that Cl-bearing salts on Europa are likely anhydrous Na salts of NaCl and/or NaClO$_4$, or hydrated NaCl$\cdot$2H$_2$O. The presence of Na salts suggests that Na$^+$ could be the major cation in Europa's ocean, which would be possible if the oceanic pH is circumneutral or alkaline.
Endogenic and Exogenic Contributions to Visible-wavelength Spectra of Europa's Trailing Hemisphere

Abstract:The composition of Europa's trailing hemisphere reflects the combined influences of endogenous geologic resurfacing and exogenous sulfur radiolysis. Using spatially resolved visible-wavelength spectra of Europa obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope, we map multiple spectral features across the trailing hemisphere and compare their geographies with the distributions of large-scale geology, magnetospheric bombardment, and surface color. Based on such comparisons, we interpret some aspects of our spectra as indicative of purely exogenous sulfur radiolysis products and other aspects as indicative of radiolysis products formed from a mixture of endogenous material and magnetospheric sulfur. The spatial distributions of two of the absorptions seen in our spectra -- a widespread downturn toward the near-UV and a distinct feature at 530 nm -- appear consistent with sulfur allotropes previously suggested from ground-based spectrophotometry. However, the geographies of two additional features -- an absorption feature at 360 nm and the spectral slope at red wavelengths -- are more consistent with endogenous material that has been altered by sulfur radiolysis. We suggest irradiated sulfate salts as potential candidates for this material, but we are unable to identify particular species with the available data.

The Influence of Temperature and Photobleaching on Irradiated Sodium Chloride at Europa-like Conditions

Abstract:Europa's leading-hemisphere chaos regions have a spectral feature at 450 nm that has been attributed to absorption by crystal defects in irradiated sodium chloride, known as F-centers. Some discrepancies exist between the laboratory data of irradiated sodium chloride and the observations, including a ∼10 nm shift in central wavelength of the F-center band and the lack of the prominent 720 nm absorption on Europa from M-centers, which result from the coalescence of pairs of F-centers. Here, we perform irradiation experiments on sodium chloride in an attempt to understand these discrepancies. We show that careful control of the temperature of the sample at 120 K yields F-centers with an absorption wavelength comparable to that of Europa. In addition, we measure the effect of photobleaching—the destruction of F-centers by photons—and show that at the energetic particle and photon flux on Europa, an equilibrium will be reached where only a modest F-center absorption develops. On the identification of hyperhydrated sodium chloride hydrates, stable at icy moon conditions

Abstract:Sodium chloride is expected to be found on many of the surfaces of icy moons like Europa and Ganymede. However, spectral identification remains elusive as the known NaCl-bearing phases cannot match current observations, which require higher number of water of hydration. Working at relevant conditions for icy worlds, we report the characterization of three "hyperhydrated" sodium chloride (SC) hydrates, and refined two crystal structures [2NaCl·17H 2 O (SC8.5); NaCl·13H 2 O (SC13)]. We found that the dissociation of Na + and Cl − ions within these crystal lattices allows for the high incorporation of water molecules and thus explain their hyperhydration. This finding suggests that a great diversity of hyperhydrated crystalline phases of common salts might be found at similar conditions. Thermodynamic constraints indicate that SC8.5 is stable at room pressure below 235 K, and it could be the most abundant NaCl hydrate on icy moon surfaces like Europa, Titan, Ganymede, Callisto, Enceladus, or Ceres. The finding of these hyperhydrated structures represents a major update to the H 2 O–NaCl phase diagram. These hyperhydrated structures provide an explanation for the mismatch between the remote observations of the surface of Europa and Ganymede and previously available data on NaCl solids. It also underlines the urgent need for mineralogical exploration and spectral data on hyperhydrates at relevant conditions to help future icy world exploration by space missions.
SPATIALLY RESOLVED SPECTROSCOPY OF EUROPA: THE DISTINCT SPECTRUM OF LARGE-SCALE CHAOS

Abstract:We present a comprehensive analysis of spatially resolved moderate spectral resolution near-infrared spectra obtained with the adaptive optics system at the Keck Observatory. We identify three compositionally distinct end member regions: the trailing hemisphere bullseye, the leading hemisphere upper latitudes, and a third component associated with leading hemisphere chaos units. We interpret the composition of the three end member regions to be dominated by irradiation products, water ice, and evaporite deposits or salt brines, respectively. The third component is associated with geological features and distinct from the geography of irradiation, suggesting an endogenous identity. Identifying the endogenous composition is of particular interest for revealing the subsurface composition. However, its spectrum is not consistent with linear mixtures of the salt minerals previously considered relevant to Europa. The spectrum of this component is distinguished by distorted hydration features rather than distinct spectral features, indicating hydrated minerals but making unique identification difficult. In particular, it lacks features common to hydrated sulfate minerals, challenging the traditional view of an endogenous salty component dominated by Mg-sulfates. Chloride evaporite deposits are one possible alternative.

Europa's Surface Water-ice Crystallinity and Correlations between Lineae and Hydrate Composition

Abstract:Europa's surface composition and evidence for cryovolcanic activity can provide insight into the properties and composition of the subsurface ocean, allowing the evaluation of its potential habitability. One promising avenue for revealing the surface processing and subsurface activity are the relative fractions of crystalline and amorphous water-ice observed on the surface, which are influenced by temperature, charged particle bombardment, vapor deposition, and cryovolcanic activity. The crystallinity observed on Europa's leading hemisphere cannot be reproduced by thermophysical and particle flux modeling alone, indicating that there may be additional processes influencing the surface. We performed a spectral mixture analysis on hyperspectral image cubes from the Galileo Near-Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS) to identify how surface crystallinity is influenced by physical processing at a high spatial resolution scale. We focus specifically on two image cubes, 15e015 closer to the equator and 17e009 closer to the south pole, both on the leading hemisphere. We performed a nonnegative least-squares spectral mixture analysis to reveal both the non-ice composition and the water-ice crystallinity of the surface. We found that amorphous water-ice dominates the spectrum at the equator and the south pole. We estimated a mean crystallinity of ~35% within the 15e015 NIMS cube and a mean crystallinity of ~15% within the 17e009 NIMS cube, which is consistent with ground-based spectroscopically derived crystallinities. We also identified a correlation of magnesium sulfate, magnesium chloride, and hydrated sulfuric acid with lineae and ridges, which may provide evidence for surface processing by upwelling subsurface material.

A New Spectral Feature on the Trailing Hemisphere of Europa at 3.78 microns

Abstract:We present hemispherically resolved spectra of the surface of Europa from ~3.1--4.13 microns, which we obtained using the near infrared spectrometer NIRSPEC on the Keck II telescope. These include the first high-quality L-band spectra of the surface to extend beyond 4 microns. In our data we identify a previously unseen spectral feature at 3.78 microns on the trailing hemisphere. The longitudinal distribution of the feature is consistent with that of a radiolytic product created by electron or Iogenic ion bombardment. This feature is coincident with an absorption feature of SO2 frost seen in both laboratory spectra and spectra of Io. However, the corresponding, typically stronger 4.07 micron feature of SO2 frost is absent from our data. This result is contrary to the suggested detection of SO2 at 4.05 microns in Galileo NIMS data of the trailing hemisphere, which was severely affected by radiation noise. We use simple spectral modeling to argue that the 3.78 micron feature is not easily explained by the presence of SO2 frost on the surface. We explore alternative explanations and discuss other potential candidate species.

The Spatial Distribution of the Unidentified 2.07 \textmu m Absorption Feature on Europa and Implications for its Origin

Abstract:A weak absorption feature at 2.07 \textmu m on Europa's trailing hemisphere has been suggested to arise from radiolytic processing of an endogenic salt, possibly sourced from the interior ocean. However, if the genesis of this feature requires endogenic material to be present, one might expect to find a correlation between its spatial distribution and the recently disrupted chaos terrains. Using archived near-infrared observations from Very Large Telescope/SINFONI with a $\sim$1 nm spectral resolution and a linear spatial resolution $\sim$130 km, we examine the spatial distribution of this feature in an effort to explore this endogenic formation hypothesis. We find that while the presence of the 2.07 \textmu m feature is strongly associated with the irradiation pattern on Europa's trailing hemisphere, there is no apparent association between the presence or depth of the absorption feature and Europa's large-scale chaos terrain. This spatial distribution suggests that the formation pathway of the 2.07 \textmu m feature on Europa is independent of any endogenous salts within the recent geology. Instead, we propose that the source of this feature may simply be a product of the radiolytic sulfur cycle or arise from some unidentified parallel irradiation process. Notably, the 2.07 \textmu m absorption band is absent from the Pwyll crater ejecta blanket, suggesting that radiolytic processing has not had enough time to form the species responsible and placing a lower limit on the irradiation timescale. We are unable to find a plausible spectral match to the 2.07 \textmu m feature within the available laboratory data.

Abstract:Europa's surface continuously experiences high fluxes of charged particles due to the presence of Jupiter's strong magnetic field. These high-energy charged particles, including electrons, interact with the ice- and salt-rich surface, resulting in complex physical and chemical processes. Here, we report that Europa ice analogues emit characteristic spectral signatures in the visible region when exposed to high-energy electron radiation. The strongest emission (ice glow) we observed was centred at ~525 nm. We found that the presence of sodium chloride and carbonate strongly quenched, while epsomite enhanced, the radiation-induced ice glow. These emission characteristics could be used to determine the chemical composition of Europa's surface during night-time low-altitude fly-bys of spacecraft such as the Europa Clipper. We estimate that the Europa Clipper Wide Angle Camera could record between 500 and 280,000 counts per second through different colour filters, depending on the chemical composition of Europa's surface. Though we focus here on Europa, our study may be relevant to other bodies exposed to high doses of ionizing radiation, such as Io and Ganymede. With its extreme radiation environment, rich surface geology and compositional diversity, the radiation-induced ice glow on Europa could enable more precise surface characterization and provide unique night-time views.

Volcanically emitted sodium chloride as a source for Io's neutral clouds and plasma torus

Abstract:The atmosphere of Jupiter's satellite Io is extremely tenuous, time variable and spatially heterogeneous. Only a few molecules--SO2, SO and S2--have previously been identified as constituents of this atmosphere, and possible sources include frost sublimation, surface sputtering and active volcanism. Io has been known for almost 30 years to be surrounded by a cloud of Na, which requires an as yet unidentified atmospheric source of sodium. Sodium chloride has been recently proposed as an important atmospheric constituent, based on the detection of chlorine in Io's plasma torus and models of Io's volcanic gases. Here we report the detection of NaCl in Io's atmosphere; it constitutes only approximately 0.3% when averaged over the entire disk, but is probably restricted to smaller regions than SO2 because of its rapid photolysis and surface condensation. Although the inferred abundance of NaCl in volcanic gases is lower than predicted, those volcanic emissions provide an important source of Na and Cl in Io's neutral clouds and plasma torus.
A comprehensive revisit of select Galileo/NIMS observations of Europa

Abstract:The Galileo Near Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS) collected spectra of Europa in the 0.7-5.2 $\mu$m wavelength region, which have been critical to improving our understanding of the surface composition of this moon. However, most of the work done to get constraints on abundances of species like water ice, hydrated sulfuric acid, hydrated salts and oxides have used proxy methods, such as absorption strength of spectral features or fitting a linear mixture of laboratory generated spectra. Such techniques neglect the effect of parameters degenerate with the abundances, such as the average grain-size of particles, or the porosity of the regolith. In this work we revisit three Galileo NIMS spectra, collected from observations of the trailing hemisphere of Europa, and use a Bayesian inference framework, with the Hapke reflectance model, to reassess Europa's surface composition. Our framework has several quantitative improvements relative to prior analyses: (1) simultaneous inclusion of amorphous and crystalline water ice, sulfuric-acid-octahydrate (SAO), CO$_2$, and SO$_2$; (2) physical parameters like regolith porosity and radiation-induced band-center shift; and (3) tools to quantify confidence in the presence of each species included in the model, constrain their parameters, and explore solution degeneracies. We find that SAO strongly dominates the composition in the spectra considered in this study, while both forms of water ice are detected at varying confidence levels. We find no evidence of either CO$_2$ or SO$_2$ in any of the spectra; we further show through a theoretical analysis that it is highly unlikely that these species are detectable in any 1-2.5 $\mu$m Galileo NIMS data.

Abstract:The composition of the surface of the Galilean icy moons has been debated since the Galileo mission. Several chemistries have been proposed to explain the composition of the non-icy component of the moon's surfaces, notably, sulphuric acid hydrates and magnesium and sodium sulphates. More recently, magnesium and sodium chlorides have been proposed to explain features observed in ground-based observations. We have considered four salts (NaCl, Na2SO4, MgSO4 and MgCl2) with various concentrations, to produce salty ice analogues. Granular particles were produced by a flash-freezing procedure. Additionally, compact slabs of salty ices were produced by a slow crystallisation of salty liquid solution. These two methods mimic the end-members (plumes and slow ice block formation) for producing hydrated salty ices on the surface of icy moons such as Europa and Ganymede. We have monitored the near-infrared (NIR) evolution of our salty ices during sublimation, revealing differences between the granular particles and the slabs. The slabs formed a higher amount of hydrates and the most highly hydrated compounds. Granular ices must be formed from a more concentrated salty solution to increase the amount of hydrates within the ice particles. The sublimation of salty ices removed all excess water ice efficiently, but the dehydration of the salts was not observed. The final spectra of the slabs were most flattened around 1.5 and 2.0 μm, especially for the Na2SO4, MgCl2 and MgSO4, suggesting the presence of stable, highly hydrated compounds. We find that Na2SO4, MgCl2 and MgSO4 are most compatible with the non-icy component at the surface of the icy moons as observed by the NIMS instrument on Galileo and by ground-based observations.

H$_2$O$_2$ within chaos terrain on Europa's leading hemisphere

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide is part of an important radiolytic cycle on Europa and may be a critical source of oxidants to the putative subsurface ocean. The surface geographic distribution of hydrogen peroxide may constrain the processes governing its abundance as well as its potential relevance to the subsurface chemistry. However, maps of Europa's hydrogen peroxide beyond hemispherical averages have never been published. Here, we present spatially resolved L-band (3.16 - 4 $\mu$m) observations of Europa's 3.5 $\mu$m hydrogen peroxide absorption, which we obtained using the near-infrared spectrometer NIRSPEC and the adaptive optics system on the Keck II telescope. Using these data, we map the strength of the 3.5 $\mu$m absorption across the surface at a nominal spatial resolution of $\sim$300 km. Though previous disk-integrated data seemed consistent with the laboratory expectation that Europa's hydrogen peroxide exists primarily in its coldest and iciest regions, we find nearly the exact opposite at this finer spatial scale. Instead, we observe the largest hydrogen peroxide absorptions at low latitudes on the leading and anti-Jovian hemispheres, correlated with chaos terrain, and relative depletions toward the cold, icy high latitudes. This distribution may reflect the effects of decreased hydrogen peroxide destruction due to efficient electron scavenging by CO$_2$ within chaos terrain.

ALMA Spectroscopy of Europa: A Search for Active Plumes

Abstract:The subsurface ocean of Europa is a high priority target in the search for extraterrestrial life, but direct investigations are hindered by the presence of a thick, exterior ice shell. Here we present spectral line and continuum maps of Europa obtained over four epochs in May-June 2021 using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), to search for molecular emission from atmospheric plumes, with the aim of investigating subsurface processes. Using a 3D physical model, we obtained upper limits for the plume abundances of HCN, H$_2$CO, SO$_2$ and CH$_3$OH. If active plume(s) were present, they contained very low abundances of these molecules. Assuming a total gas production rate of $10^{29}$ s$^{-1}$, our H$_2$CO abundance upper limit of $<0.016$\% is more than an order of magnitude less than measured in the Enceladus plume by the Cassini spacecraft, implying a possible chemical difference between the plume source materials for these two icy moons.

Abstract:Introduction: Jupiter’s moon Europa is a differentiated body that consists of a Fe-rich core, a silicate mantle, and a water shell, which could contain an ocean [1]. The presence of sulfate-bearing compounds on the moon’s icy surface has been interpreted in terms of frozen oceanic water [2]. However, evaluations of oceanic chemistry from surface observations are limited because of radiolysis [3] and the implantation of chemical species from Io and interplanetary sources. Although the oceanic composition remains unknown, attempts have been made to consider the origin and evolution of oceanic chemistry [4-7]. In the framework of this strategy, we develop physical-chemistry models for fluids that could have formed a primordial ocean.

Fresh emplacement of hydrated sodium chloride on Ceres from ascending salty fluids

Abstract:The surface and internal structure of Ceres show evidence of a global process of aqueous alteration, indicating the existence of an ocean in the past. However, it is not clear whether part of this ocean is still present and whether residual fluids are still circulating in the dwarf planet. These fluids may be exposed in a geologically young surface, and the most promising site to verify the occurrence of present fluids on Ceres is Cerealia Facula dome, in Occator crater. This very young facula exhibits minerals that are relatively rare in our Solar System, the formation of which requires the presence of liquid water in combination with hydrothermal activity. Here we report the discovery of hydrated sodium chloride on Cerealia Facula. These newly identified chloride salts are concentrated on the top of the dome, close to a system of radial fractures. The spatial distribution of the hydrated phase suggests that chloride salts are the solid residue of deep brines that reached the surface only recently, or are still ascending. These salts are very efficient in maintaining Ceres's warm internal temperature and lowering the eutectic temperature of the brines, in which case ascending salty fluids may exist in Ceres today.

Abstract:Jupiter's moon Europa has a subsurface ocean beneath an icy crust. Conditions within the ocean are unknown, and it is unclear whether it is connected to the surface. We observed Europa with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to search for active release of material by probing its surface and atmosphere. A search for plumes yielded no detection of water, carbon monoxide, methanol, ethane, or methane fluorescence emissions. Four spectral features of carbon dioxide (CO2) ice were detected; their spectral shapes and distribution across Europa's surface indicate that the CO2 is mixed with other compounds and concentrated in Tara Regio. The 13CO2 absorption is consistent with an isotopic ratio of 12C/13C = 83 ± 19. We interpret these observations as indicating that carbon is sourced from within Europa.

Abstract:We present the first comprehensive study of NaCl and KCl gases in Io's atmosphere in order to investigate their characteristics, and to infer properties of Io's volcanoes and subsurface magma chambers. In this work, we compile all past spectral line observations of NaCl and KCl in Io's atmosphere from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and use atmospheric models to constrain the physical properties of the gases on several dates between 2012 and 2018. NaCl and KCl appear to be largely spatially confined and for observations with high spectral resolution, the temperatures are high (~500-1000 K), implying a volcanic origin. The ratio of NaCl:KCl was found to be ~5-6 in June 2015 and ~3.5-10 in June 2016, which is consistent with predictions based on observations of Io's extended atmosphere, and less than half the Na:K ratio in chondrites. Assuming these gases are volcanic in origin, these ratios imply a magma temperature of ~1300 K, such that the magma will preferentially outgas KCl over NaCl.
