Abstract:Upper airway resistance represents a multilevel condition which can be affected from conditions in the nasal cavities, nasopharynx, oropharynx, or larynx. Upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) was initially coined by Guilleminault et al. in 1993 to describe adults with symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing with associated measures of increased airway resistance. Pediatric UARS is characterized by abnormal breathing patterns and increased respiratory effort during sleep, without apneas, hypopneas, or drops in oxygen saturations. In children, UARS may be hard to diagnose as the symptoms present differently during stages of growth.
