Abstract:Iron sulphide (FeS2) nanoparticles have potential applications in industry as p-type semiconductor, catalyst, photovoltaic cells and used as artificial enzymes. Iron sulphide-pyrite phase nanoparticles were synthesized using ferrous nitrate and sodium sulfide as precursors in the aqueous by co-precipitation method at low temperature (85°C). Cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) is used as surfactant, while Zn2+ and Ni2+ were doped in FeS2 to improve the optical properties. These nanoparticles are characterized by the techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible-spectrum, Fourier transform infrared spectrum and scanning electron microscopy. Mean crystallite size of FeS2 nanoparticle is 48 nm and band gap energy (Eg) as 2.5 eV. FT-IR peak assignments revealed the presence of FeS2. Doping of ions was confirmed by the intensity variations exhibited in XRD and FT-IR. Addition of divalent dopants Zn2+ and Ni2+ in FeS2 confirmed the reduction in size of the nanoparticles as 38 and 41 nm and further Eg value were estimated to be 2.92 and 2.62 eV using UV-Vis spectrum. SEM micrographs exhibited spherical particle as microstructures.
