Abstract:While designing the energy-momentum relation of photons is key to many linear, nonlinear, and quantum optical phenomena, a new set of light-matter properties may be realized by employing the topology of the photonic bath itself. In this work we experimentally investigate the properties of superconducting qubits coupled to a metamaterial waveguide based on a photonic analog of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We explore topologically induced properties of qubits coupled to such a waveguide, ranging from the formation of directional qubit-photon bound states to topology-dependent cooperative radiation effects. Addition of qubits to this waveguide system also enables direct quantum control over topological edge states that form in finite waveguide systems, useful for instance in constructing a topologically protected quantum communication channel. Abstract:Topological insulators feature a number of topologically protected boundary modes linked to the value of their bulk invariant. While in one-dimensional systems the boundary modes are zero dimensional and localized, in two-dimensional topological insulators the boundary modes are chiral, one-dimensional propagating modes along the edges of the system. Thus, topological photonic insulators with large Chern numbers naturally display a topologically protected multimode waveguide at their edges. Here, we show how to take advantage of these topologically protected propagating modes by interfacing them with quantum emitters. In particular, using a Harper-Hofstadter lattice, we find situations in which the emitters feature quasiquantized decay rates due to the increasing number of edge modes, and where their spontaneous emission spatially separates in different modes. We also show how using a single $\pi$-pulse the combination of such spatial separation and the interacting character of the emitters leads to the formation of a single-photon time-bin entangled state with no classical analog, which we characterize computing its entanglement entropy. Finally, we also show how the emitters can selectively interact with the different channels using nonlocal light-matter couplings such as the ones that can be obtained with giant atoms. Such capabilities pave the way for generating quantum gates among topologically protected photons as well as generating more complex entangled states of light in topological channels.

Abstract:Topological photonics has attracted increasing attention in recent years due to the unique opportunities it provides to manipulate light in a robust way immune to disorder and defects. Up to now, diverse photonic platforms, rich physical mechanisms and fruitful device applications have been proposed for topological photonics, including one-way waveguide, topological lasing, topological nanocavity, Dirac and Weyl points, Fermi arcs, nodal lines, etc. In this review, we provide an introduction to the field of topological photonics through the lens of topological invariants and bulk-boundary correspondence in one, two, and three dimensions, which may not only offer a unified understanding about the underlying robustness of diverse and distinct topological phenomena of light, but could also inspire further developments by introducing new topological invariants and unconventional bulk-boundary correspondence to the research of topological photonics.

Abstract:Connecting quantum emitters Exploiting topological properties of a system allows certain properties to be protected against the disorder and scattering caused by defects. Barik et al. demonstrate a strong light-matter interaction in a topological photonic structure (see the Perspective by Amo). They created topological edge states at the interface between two photonic, topologically distinct regions and coupled them to a single quantum emitter. The chiral nature of single-photon emission was used to inject single photons of opposite polarization into counterpropagating topological edge states. Nonlinear Quantum Optics at a Topological Interface Enabled by Defect Engineering

Abstract:The integration of topology into photonics has generated a new design framework for constructing robust and unidirectional waveguides, which are not feasible with traditional photonic devices. Here, we overcome current barriers to the successful integration of quantum emitters such as quantum dots (QDs) into valley-Hall (VH) topological waveguides, utilising photonic defects at the topological interface to stabilise the local charge environment and inverse design for efficient topological-conventional mode conversion. By incorporating QDs within defects of VH-photonic crystals, we demonstrate the first instances of single-photon resonant fluorescence and resonant transmission spectroscopy of a quantum emitter at a topological waveguide interface. Our results bring together topological photonics with optical nonlinear effects at the single-photon level, offering a new avenue to investigate the interaction between topology and quantum nonlinear systems.

Abstract:Topological photonics provides a powerful platform to explore topological physics beyond traditional electronic materials and shows promising applications in light transport and lasers. Classical degrees of freedom are routinely used to construct topological light modes in real or synthetic dimensions. Beyond the classical topology, the inherent quantum nature of light provides a wealth of fundamentally distinct topological states. Here we implement experiments on topological states of quantized light in a superconducting circuit, with which one- and two-dimensional Fock-state lattices are constructed. We realize rich topological physics including topological zero-energy states of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, strain-induced pseudo-Landau levels, valley Hall effect, and Haldane chiral edge currents. Our study extends the topological states of light to the quantum regime, bridging topological phases of condensed-matter physics with circuit quantum electrodynamics, and offers a freedom in controlling the quantum states of multiple resonators.

Abstract: Topological photonics provides a novel platform to explore topological physics beyond traditional electronic materials and stimulates promising applications in topologically protected light transport and lasers. Classical degrees of freedom such as polarizations and wavevectors are routinely used to synthesize topological light modes. Beyond the classical regime, inherent quantum nature of light gives birth to a wealth of fundamentally distinct topological states, which offer topological protection in quantum information processing. Here we implement such experiments on topological states of quantized light in a superconducting circuit, on which three resonators are tunably coupled to a gmon qubit. Abstract:Non-Abelian topological charges herald a new epoch in topological classification, featuring multiple tangled-bandgaps that promise conceptual breakthroughs. Here, we engineered the first photonic non-Abelian topological insulators by the integrated waveguide and demonstrating a novel quantum light source that exhibits non-Abelian topological features. We experimentally observed the generation of a discrete-band two-photon source with extended wavelengths of signal and idler photons lying in S and L bands, respectively, exhibiting an enhanced coincidence-to-accidental ratio. Additionally, we demonstrated the robustness of this quantum light sources by introducing significant disorders. Such non-Abelian two-photon source can be engineered within the transmission window of the material as well as provides a natural scheme for optimizing the spectral purity towards robust indistinguishable photons. Our scheme paves the way for non-Abelian topological quantum device applications in quantum light sources engineering, quantum computing and quantum simulation as well as shedding light on interdisciplinary studies of non-Abelian physics and quantum optics.

Abstract:AbstractTopological photonics, accompanied by the ability to manipulate light, has emerged as a rapidly growing field of research. More platforms for displaying novel topological photonic states are being explored, thus offering efficient strategies for the realization of robust photonic devices. Optical waveguide arrays, described as a (n+1)‐dimensional system, are ideal platforms for studying topological photonics because of the characteristic that can exhibit light dynamics. Here, this work reviews the experimental implementations of the various topological phases in the optical waveguide arrays, and specifically discusses novel physical phenomena arising from the combination of topology with non‐Hermitianity and nonlinearity. It is believed that topological waveguide arrays provide powerful support for enriching topological physics and promoting the development of topological photonic integrated devices.

Abstract:Topological photonics has attracted widespread research attention in the past decade due to its fundamental interest and unique manner in controlling light propagation for advanced applications. Paradigmatic approaches have been proposed to achieve topological phases including topological insulators in a variety of photonic systems. In particular, photonic lattices composed of evanescently coupled waveguide arrays have been employed conveniently to explore and investigate topological physics. In this article, we review our recent work on the demonstration of topological phenomena in reconfigurable photonic lattices established by site-to-site cw-laser-writing or multiple-beam optical induction in photorefractive nonlinear crystals. We focus on the study of topological states realized in the celebrated one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattices, including nonlinear topological edge states and gap solitons, nonlinearity-induced coupling to topological edge states, and nonlinear control of non-Hermitian topological states. In the two-dimensional case, we discuss two typical examples: universal mapping of momentum-space topological singularities through Dirac-like photonic lattices and realization of real-space nontrivial loop states in flatband photonic lattices. Our work illustrates how photorefractive materials can be employed conveniently to build up various synthetic photonic microstructures for topological studies, which may prove relevant and inspiring for the exploration of fundamental phenomena in topological systems beyond photonics.

Abstract:It is now well-established that photonic systems can exhibit topological energy bands; similar to their electronic counterparts, this leads to the formation of chiral edge modes which can be used to transmit light in a manner that is protected against back-scattering. While it is understood how classical signals can propagate under these conditions, it is an outstanding important question how the quantum vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field get modified in the presence of a topological band structure. We address this challenge by exploring a setting where a non-zero topological invariant guarantees the presence of a parametrically-unstable chiral edge mode in a system with boundaries, even though there are no bulk-mode instabilities. We show that one can exploit this to realize a topologically protected, quantum-limited travelling-wave parametric amplifier. The device is naturally protected both against internal losses and back-scattering; the latter feature is in stark contrast to standard travelling wave amplifiers. This adds a new example to the list of potential quantum devices that profit from topological transport.

Abstract:Topological photonics provides a new opportunity for the examination of novel topological properties of matter, in which the energy band theory and ideas in topology are utilized to manipulate the propagation of photons. Since the discovery of topological insulators in condensed matter, researchers have studied similar topological effects in photonics.Topological photonics can lead to materials that support the robust unidirectional propagation of light without back reflections. This ideal transport property is unprecedented in traditional optics and may lead to radical changes in integrated optical devices. In this review, we present the exciting developments of topological photonics and focus on several prominent milestones of topological phases in photonics, such as topological insulators, topological semimetals, and higher-order topological phases. We conclude with the prospect of novel topological effects and their applications in topological photonics.
Quantum Topological Boundary States in Quasi-Crystals

Abstract:Topological phases play a novel and fundamental role in matter and display extraordinary robustness to smooth changes in material parameters or disorder. A crossover between topological material and quantum information may lead to inherent fault-tolerant quantum simulations and quantum computing. Quantum features may be preserved by being encoded among topological structures of physical evolution systems. This requires stimulation, manipulation, and observation of topological phenomena at the single quantum particle level, which has not, however, yet been realized. It is asked whether the quantum features of single photons can be preserved in topological structures. The boundary states are experimentally observed at the genuine single-photon level and the performance of the topological phase is demonstrated to protect the quantum features against diffusion-induced decoherence in coupled waveguides and noise decoherence from the ambient environment. Compatibility between macroscopic topological states and microscopic single photons in the ambient environment is thus confirmed, leading to a new avenue to "quantum topological photonics" and providing more new possibilities for quantum materials and quantum technologies.
Topology-Enhanced Nonreciprocal Scattering and Photon Absorption in a Waveguide

Abstract:Topological matter and topological optics have been studied in many systems, with promising applications in materials science and photonics technology. These advances motivate the study of the interaction between topological matter and light, as well as topological protection in light-matter interactions. In this work, we study a waveguide-interfaced topological atom array. The light-matter interaction is nontrivially modified by topology, yielding optical phenomena. We find topology-enhanced photon absorption from the waveguide for a large Purcell factor, i.e., Γ/Γ0≫1, where Γ and Γ0 are the atomic decays to the waveguide and environment, respectively. To understand this unconventional photon absorption, we propose a multichannel scattering approach and study the interaction spectra for edge- and bulk-state channels. We find that, by breaking inversion and time-reversal symmetries, optical anisotropy is enabled for the reflection process, but the transmission is isotropic. Through a perturbation analysis of the edge-state channel, we show that the anisotropy in the reflection process originates from the waveguide-mediated non-Hermitian interaction. However, the inversion symmetry in the non-Hermitian interaction makes the transmission isotropic. At a topology-protected atomic spacing, the subradiant edge state exhibits huge anisotropy. Because of the interplay between edge- and bulk-state channels, a large topological bandgap enhances nonreciprocal reflection of photons in the waveguide for weakly broken time-reversal symmetry, i.e., Γ0/Γ≪1, producing complete photon absorption. We show that our proposal can be implemented in superconducting quantum circuits. The topology-enhanced photon absorption is useful for quantum detection. This work shows the potential to manipulate light with topological quantum matter.

Abstract:Chirality in integrated quantum photonics has emerged as a promising route towards achieving scalable quantum technologies with quantum nonlinearity effects. Topological photonic waveguides, which utilize helical optical modes, have been proposed as a novel approach to harnessing chiral light-matter interactions on-chip. However, uncertainties remain regarding the nature and strength of the chiral coupling to embedded quantum emitters, hindering the scalability of these systems. In this work, we present a comprehensive investigation of chiral coupling in topological photonic waveguides using a combination of experimental, theoretical, and numerical analyses. We quantitatively characterize the position-dependence nature of the light-matter coupling on several topological photonic waveguides and benchmark their chiral coupling performance against conventional line defect waveguides for chiral quantum optical applications. Our results provide crucial insights into the degree and characteristics of chiral light-matter interactions in topological photonic quantum circuits and pave the way towards the implementation of quantitatively-predicted quantum nonlinear effects on-chip.

Abstract:Quantum topological photonics is a new research field with great potential that is based on developments in both quantum optics and topological photonics. Topological photonics offers unique properties, including topological robustness and an anti‐backscattering property, and these advantages are strongly required in quantum optics. Quantum technology, which includes quantum optics, represents an important direction for future technological development. However, existing quantum light sources are unstable and quantum information may easily be lost during transmission. These disadvantages have troubled researchers for a long time and no perfect solution is available thus far. Fortunately, application of topological photonics to quantum optics can help to generate robust quantum light sources and protect photons from decoherence during photon propagation. This allows the correlation and entanglement to be maintained even when photons travel over long distances. To date, quantum topological photonics has provided major breakthroughs in certain quantum devices. This Review presents the basic concepts of quantum topological photonics and summarizes how the topological protection property works in quantum light sources, quantum information transmission, and other quantum devices. Finally, an outlook is provided on the remaining challenges and potential future directions of quantum topological photonics, which can aid in exploration of additional new phenomena.
