Abstract:Claims of disciplinary fragmentation in communication studies regularly rest on epistemic bases. This essay provides a counter statement, arguing that a social epistemology contains the potential to organize all communicative ways of knowing. I explore the constitutive metamodel as a plausible communication epistemology, lacking only a robust mechanism for facilitating cosmopolitan scholarly exchange. I then advance the concept of dialogic inquiry as an extension of and corrective to the constitutive metamodel. Since dialogic inquiry rests on the assumption that incommensurate perspectives can be mutually informative, it animates the constitutive metamodel toward networking otherwise circumscribed research trajectories. In a critical demonstration, dialogic inquiry guides my analysis of two theories of interpersonal communication. My conclusions trace implications for paradigmatic coherence.
