Abstract:Does music therapy simply consist of music used therapeutically? As Bruscia’s definitions demonstrate, music therapy is much more complex. It shouldn’t be confused with ‘music medicine’ – which is music interventions delivered by medical or healthcare professionals.

Abstract:Music is an abstract noun which can only be felt by soft core of the heart. Music can make a person cry, laugh and also love. It can also heal both mental and physical pain. It is a diverse way of communication that helps to deliver feelings. Now-a-days a therapy known as the music therapy has been developed to heal mankind. Therefore, healing music is treated as similar to curing music, meditational music. Music therapy is a type of expressive arts therapy that uses music to improve and maintain the physical, psychological, and social wellbeing of individuals-involves a broad range of activities, such as listening to music, singing, and playing a musical instrument. In this presentation we discuss various aspects of music therapy.

Abstract:MusicMedicine describes the use of medicofunctional music, today called music-based interventions, promoting therapeutic benefits in medical settings based on scientific evidence. In prevention, therapy, rehabilitation, health promotion, performance enhancement, behavioral management and many other settings its benefits may at the same time contribute to cost containment. Established standards in education, research, and application secure reliability, validity and reproducibility of methods, concepts, results and therapeutic effects. Such standards include definition of intervening variables such as the musical stimuli used, as well as contributing or interfering variables, such as specific clinical settings or sociocultural background. Wherever possible, studies and therapeutic regimes should include music therapists. Traditionally, educated doctors know much about medicine, and might be fond of music, but usually have no music therapeutic expertise. At the same time, research in MusicMedicine demands interdisciplinary and multimodal approaches using mixed-methods design with thorough biostatistical design and analysis. Since 1982, MusicMedicine as inaugurated by the International Society for Music in Medicine ISMM e.V. has bridged together music therapy and traditional medical science orientations, leading towards a solid partnership that is influencing today’s practice of integrative medicine. Publications of studies about music-based medical interventions should preferably include an audio-file of the music used in the conducted session.

Abstract:Objective: Aim: The aim of the paper was to compare the principles of music therapy and psychotherapy, pointing out numerous similarities and differences between these two techniques. Patients and methods: Materials and Methods: Resistance is observed, as well as the phenomenon of transference and countertransference. In either method, the therapist is a covered therapeutic mirror for the patient/client. Music therapy, unlike psychotherapy, works almost exclusively on emotions and on the symbolic layer of expression of personality. In the case of music therapy, the verbal layer plays a less significant role than in the case of psychotherapy. The clinical effectiveness of music therapy has been studied much less than that of psychotherapeutic methods. In both psychotherapy and music therapy, there is a phenomenon of transference, countertransference and resistance. Conclusion: Conclusions: Psychotherapy and music therapy are complementary methods in the treatment of mental and behavioral disorders.

Abstract:The therapeutic effects of music are being recognized increasingly in the field of rehabilitation medicine. More music therapists are being employed in physical medicine and rehabilitation centres, with the goal of using music therapy services to assist in the physical recovery and health maintenance of clients. In spite of the benefits of physical rehabilitation programs, client participation to their full potential is often not observed. Music encourages participation in exercises and activities. Music can ease the discomfort and difficulty associated with exercise and therapy activities, and help ensure consistent participation. One of the goals of the music therapist is to provide a means for the client to express him/herself in a musical activity. Music therapy and rehabilitation medicine are starting to find a common niche in working together with clients who have various neurological, orthopaedic, and paediatric conditions. Therapeutic application of music in rehabilitation contributes to the quality of life of individuals with disabilities. Combined goals could include improving strength, range of motion, balance, communication, and cognition. Continued efforts in clinical practice and research will build on the information already available to further define possible applications of music therapy in rehabilitation, and its outcome and benefits. Occupational therapists can use the therapeutic medium of music, and the services of the music therapy discipline, in assisting clients to maximize their functional independence in their daily occupational roles.

Abstract:Music therapy currently plays an important role in both treatment and prevention of mental health. Sound therapy (music therapy) is used, among others, in psychiatry, cardiology, obstetrics, gynecology, intensive care, surgery, palliative care, rehabilitation, geriatrics, oncology, dentistry and neurology. In healthy people, music (both played and listened to) has a relaxing effect and eliminates nervous tension and reduces stress. Scientific research confirms the beneficial effects of music in hospital and sanatorium treatment. The advantage of this method is the low cost of therapy and universal availability. Meetings can be held in a group or individually. When selecting music, special attention should be paid to the patient's mental condition as well as his personality and musical preferences. The tempo of the music is also very important, as well as active or passive participation in classes using sounds.

Abstract:Working with children and adolescents plays an important part in music therapy as a profession – not least because music is of great developmental psychological significance in childhood and adolescence. This article provides an introductury overview of music therapy practice and research in childhood and adolescence. Music therapy is a safe and and generally well-accepted intervention. Research findings show that the highest quality of evidence for positive effects of music therapy has been found in autism spectrum and neonatal care. Music therapy with children and adolescents can act as an effective non-pharmacological alternative and complement to other disease-specific therapies.

Abstract:This article summarizes the research on music therapy and music medicine for children and adolescents with diagnoses commonly treated by psychiatrists. Music therapy and music medicine are defined, effects of music on the brain are described, and music therapy research in psychiatric treatment is discussed. Music therapy research with specific child/adolescent populations is summarized, including disorders usually diagnosed in childhood, substance abuse, mood/anxiety disorders, and eating disorders. Clinical implications are listed, including suggestions for health care professionals seeking to use music medicine techniques. Strengths and weaknesses of music therapy treatment are discussed, as well as areas for future research.

Abstract:The present article talks about a model of analysis and interpretation of music through the metaphorical translation of each musical parameter. In order for music to be a therapeutic means, we believe that it must become a musical experience and facilitate access to deep areas of the self, as well as raise questions and problems of extra-musical origin. Thus, the music that has become a metaphor can resonate with questions that the therapist can use in the health promotion process, the final and central goal of music therapy. Metaphors, above all, can be used in everyday life to add depth, richness, and meaning to our worlds, being a figure of speech that is used in order to help people understand complex or abstract concepts in a more relatable or understandable way.

Abstract:During the last years, a number of studies demonstrated that music listening (and even more so music production) activates a multitude of brain structures involved in cognitive, sensorimotor, and emotional processing. For example, music engages sensory processes, attention, memory-related processes, perception-action mediation ("mirror neuron system" activity), multisensory integration, activity changes in core areas of emotional processing, processing of musical syntax and musical meaning, and social cognition. It is likely that the engagement of these processes by music can have beneficial effects on the psychological and physiological health of individuals, although the mechanisms underlying such effects are currently not well understood. This article gives a brief overview of factors contributing to the effects of music-therapeutic work. Then, neuroscientific studies using music to investigate emotion, perception-action mediation ("mirror function"), and social cognition are reviewed, including illustrations of the relevance of these domains for music therapy.

Abstract:There is a general consensus that music is both universal and communicative, and musical dialogue is a key element in much music-therapeutic practice. However, the idea that music is a communicative medium has, to date, received little attention within the cognitive sciences, and the limited amount of research that addresses how and what music communicates has resulted in findings that appear to be of limited relevance to music therapy. This article will draw on ethnomusicological evidence and an understanding of communication derived from the study of speech to sketch a framework within which to situate and understand music as communicative practice. It will outline some key features of music as an interactive participatory medium – including entrainment and floating intentionality – that can help underpin an understanding of music as communicative, and that may help guide experimental approaches in the cognitive science of music to shed light on the processes involved in musical communication and on the consequences of engagement in communication through music for interacting individuals. It will suggest that the development of such approaches may enable the cognitive sciences to provide a more comprehensive, predictive understanding of music in interaction that could be of direct benefit to music therapy.

Abstract:This contribution focuses on the definition of music therapy as a specific applicative context to be seen as distinct from the generic use of music in a variety of pathologies. Music therapy is presented as a discipline grounded both upon relationship and upon the theoretical-methodological principles peculiar to each applicative model. The therapeutic nature proper to music therapy is highlighted with specific reference to the domain of the dementias. Music therapy facilitates expression, communication and relationship in the non-verbal context. Such an opportunity allows persons with dementia to establish contact, to express, and even contrive an organisation/regulation of their emotions, through the sonorous-musical relationship with the music therapist. On the basis of a brief analysis of the relevant literature, attention is drawn to the importance of both evidence-based clinical practice and music therapy evaluations, aimed at proving the effectiveness of music therapy, while promoting its correct application.

Abstract:Counseling is an activity of providing professional assistance by the counselor to the client as a party in need of assistance. Music in counseling is used to create a therapeutic relationship between the counselor and the client. Music as a universal language is also increasingly able to support the client to achieve catharsis, which is an effort to express the emotions that have been hidden so far. The purpose of writing this article is to examine and explain the basic knowledge of music therapy in counseling. The literature review used comes from several databases such as Google Scholar and Google Books as well as other supporting books. The results of the study indicate that the use of music therapy in counseling is effective in improving the quality of counseling to be more pleasant, therapeutic, and able to increase the success of Counseling services.

Abstract:In partial response to the demand for evidence-based practice, there is an increasing interest in the use of music therapy as procedural support for both invasive and non-invasive medical procedures. Clinicians and researchers are attempting to define how music therapy functions as procedural support in order to advance clinical practice and research, but concepts remain inadequately specified in the literature. The current philosophical inquiry used qualitative document analysis to critically examine the extant literature in music therapy as procedural support during invasive medical procedures. The aims of the analysis were to identify key concepts, provide definitions of those concepts, and begin to explicate the interrelationships among concepts related to music therapy as procedural support. A total of 19 clinical practice articles, clinical practice book chapters, and research articles met the criteria for inclusion in the analysis. Data analysis and synthesis resulted in a working model of music therapy as procedural support, in which the music therapist engages in a reflexive process of continually assessing the patient's responses in order to refocus the intervention lens (e.g., altering aspects of the music, of focus of attention, and of patient/therapist interaction) to positively influence outcomes. It is hoped that the working model of music therapy as procedural support may stimulate clinical dialogue and serve as an initial systematic step toward theory construction in this area.

Abstract:Down through the ages, music has been universally valued for its therapeutic properties based on the psychological and physiological responses in humans. However, the underlying mechanisms of the psychological and physiological responses to music have been poorly identified and defined. Without clarification, a concept can be misused, thereby diminishing its importance for application to nursing research and practice. The purpose of this article was for the clarification of the concept of music therapy based on Walker and Avant’s concept analysis strategy. A review of recent nursing and health-related literature covering the years 2007–2014 was performed on the concepts of music, music therapy, preferred music, and individualized music. As a result of the search, the attributes, antecedents, and consequences of music therapy were identified, defined, and used to develop a conceptual model of music therapy. The conceptual model of music therapy provides direction for developing music interventions for nursing research and practice to be tested in various settings to improve various patient outcomes. Based on Walker and Avant’s concept analysis strategy, model and contrary cases are included. Implications for future nursing research and practice to use the psychological and physiological responses to music therapy are discussed.

Abstract:This philosophical inquiry critically examines music therapy musicianship in order to reconceptualize the ways in which musicianship is conceived of and taught in education and training programs in the United States. Through a constructive and critical interaction with historical and extant literature, we seek to create space for the uniqueness of musicianship in our field. We challenge the relevance of the conservatory model, the primacy of the work concept, and the focus on fine art often found in educational settings. In doing so, we align music therapy musicianship with relevant musics, instrumentation, and the unique contextual and relational components of music experiences in our work. We construct multidirectional connections between musicality, musical identity, musicianship, music therapy context, musicking, and the clients'/participants' lifeworld, introducing subconcepts within and between each concept. This co-construction with the literature asserts our identity in education, training, practice, and research. We conclude by offering preliminary guidance that may further develop music therapy musicianship in education and clinical training programs, in alignment with current reports on education.
Interaction Themes in Music Therapy: Definition and Delimitation

Abstract:Based on a doctoral study, the author presents a type of music therapy interaction called ‘Interaction Themes.’ These are developed from session to session and often appear in music therapy interventions with children with severe functional limitations, especially children with autism. Although the Interaction Themes are characterised by a relatively simple and selfgenerated content, they have an essential function because they contain the child's and music therapist's joint interaction history. They make up the context within which it is possible to create meaningful interaction with a client group whose expressions are often difficult to understand. The article describes the characteristics and functions of Interaction Themes, compares the phenomenon with music therapy case literature and delimits it in regard to other types of music therapy interaction with this client group. The results are described through qualitative analysis methods applied to clinical video material, including member checking, negative case analyses, and pattern-generalisation.

Abstract:Our study aimed to investigate the correlation between medicine, health perception, and music as well as the role of music in the healthcare setting. To gain insights into the dynamics between these two fields, we gathered opinions from attendees and presenters at an international conference on music medicine, musicians' health, and music therapy. A team of six interviewers conducted a total of 26 semi-structured interviews. The interview guide focused on four predetermined themes: (1) "music in medicine", (2) "performing arts medicine", (3) "music for the individual", and (4) "music for society". The responses were analyzed using grounded theory methods as well as thematic and content analysis. To enhance the analytical strength, investigator triangulation was employed. Within the predefined themes, we identified several subthemes. Theme 1 encompassed topics such as "listening and performing music for treating diseases and establishing non-verbal relationships", "the value of music in specific disorders, end-of-life care, and pain management", and "the design of sound spaces". Theme 2 explored aspects including the "denial and taboo surrounding physical and mental health issues among musicians", "the importance of prevention", and an antithesis: "pain and suffering driving creativity". Theme 3 addressed the "mental role of music in ordinary and extraordinary life" as well as "music's ability to enable self-conditioning". Lastly, Theme 4 examined the role of music in "cultural self-identification" and "development and education for children". Throughout the interviews, participants expressed a lack of knowledge and awareness regarding interdisciplinary research and the fields of music and medicine. Our findings affirm the significance of music therapy and performing arts medicine as well as the broader relationship between music and medicine. They highlight the potential benefits of perception and experiential pathways for individuals and, consequently, for human society.
