Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) is generated from a defect in two-dimensional (2-D) photonic crystals (PC). By breaking the translation symmetry along the two orthogonal directions, the localized defect states can be supported within photonic bandgap of the PC. Particularly, we examine the characteristics of the point defect states along the azimuthal direction by the finite-difference (FD) based eigenvalue analysis. We find that vortex beam carrying OAM can be generated from the defect. The novel design can be easily integrated in optical circuits.

Abstract:MPC (Magneto-Photonic Crystal) Optimisation is a feature-rich Windows software application designed to enable researchers to analyze the optical and magneto-optical spectral properties of multilayers containing gyrotropic constituents. A set of computational algorithms aimed at enabling the design optimization and optical or magneto-optical (MO) spectral analysis of 1D magnetic photonic crystals (MPC) is reported, together with its Windows software implementation. Relevant material property datasets (e.g., the optical spectra of refractive index, absorption, and gyration) of several important optical and MO materials are included, enabling easy reproduction of the previously published results from the field of MPC-based Faraday rotator development, and an effective demonstration-quality introduction of future users to the multiple features of this package. We also report on the methods and algorithms used to obtain the absorption coefficient spectral dispersion datasets for new materials, for which the film thickness, transmission spectrum, and refractive index dispersion function are known.

Abstract:We investigate in detail how photonic band structures of semiconductor-based photonic crystals will be tuned after being added an external magnetic field. It shows that due to the magneto-optical effects including Faraday effect and Voigt effect, the dielectric constant of the semiconductor is modified differently in different frequency ranges. As results, the photonic band structures and transmissive properties of the semiconductor-based photonic crystals are tuned correspondingly. Interestingly, wave transmission below the plasma frequency can be realized. This is shown by one-dimensional photonic crystals consisting of an intrinsic InSb layer and an air layer stacked alternately.

Abstract:One-dimensional tunable photonic crystals based on MnFe2O4 magnetic fluids are investigated theoretically. The band structures of the photonic crystals are calculated. Simulation results indicate that the mid frequencies of the first, second and third band gaps can be tuned by the external magnetic field. The widths of the first and second band gaps decrease with the external magnetic field strength gradually, but those of the third band gaps increase with the external magnetic field strength.

Abstract:Integrating plasmonic resonance into photonic bandgap nanostructures promises additional control over their optical properties. Here, one-dimensional (1D) plasmonic photonic crystals with angular-dependent structural colors are fabricated by assembling magnetoplasmonic colloidal nanoparticles under an external magnetic field. Unlike conventional 1D photonic crystals, the assembled 1D periodic structures show angular-dependent colors based on the selective activation of optical diffraction and plasmonic scattering. They can be further fixed in an elastic polymer matrix to produce a photonic film with angular-dependent and mechanically tunable optical properties. The magnetic assembly enables precise control over the orientation of the 1D assemblies within the polymer matrix, producing photonic films with designed patterns displaying versatile colors from the dominant backward optical diffraction and forward plasmonic scattering. The combination of optical diffraction and plasmonic properties within a single system holds the potential for developing programmable optical functionalities for applications in various optical devices, color displays, and information encryption systems.

Abstract:Transmission characteristics of two-dimensional magnetized magnetic photonic crystals (MPCs) have been studied by electromagnetic simulation and experiments in microwave frequencies. MPCs with square and hexagonal lattices are made of ferrites, and their transmission coefficients are measured in the X waveband with an applied static magnetic field. For the lattices, a stop-band and a band shift with the applied static magnetic field are observed. The experimental results are in good agreement with those of electromagnetic simulations when magnetic anisotropy of ferrites is represented by a tensor but deviate from the simulation results when the anisotropy is modelled by an effective permeability of TMz mode.
Externally tunable multichannel filtering applications of organic material based 1D magnetic cold-plasma photonic crystals

Abstract:In the present research work, we employed the transfer matrix method (TMM) in addition to MATLAB software to examine the transmission properties of various organic-based one-dimensional (1D) magnetic cold-plasma photonic crystals (MCPPhCs). The proposed structures were found to be made up of periodic layers of organic materials and magnetic cold-plasma (MCP) at normal incidence. An external magnetic field (B) polarized in right-hand (RH) and left-hand (LH) configurations was applied on 1D MCPPhCs. In this study, four organic materials, namely pentane, hexane, heptane, and octane, were chosen to design four 1D photonic crystals (PCs), named as PC 1 (pentane-MCP), PC 2 (hexane-MCP), PC 3 (heptane-MCP), and PC 4 (octane-MCP). Our results indicated that the central frequency of the resonant peaks of unit transmission inside the photonic band-gap (PBG) of the respective organic PCs could be tuned towards the higher or lower frequency side by applying B polarized in RH and LH configurations, respectively. We also studied the effect of the period number N to produce closely spaced N-1 transmission channels of unit transmission inside the PBG of all four organic PCs. By increasing the period number N we could increase the number of transmission channels inside the PBG as per our desire. These multiple resonant peaks of unit transmission inside PBG could be easily modulated inside the PBG to accommodate new frequencies by applying B polarized in either RH or LH configurations, respectively. Moreover, our results showed that under the RH configuration, increasing B resulted in a shifting of the resonant peak towards the higher frequency side with a reduction in its full width half maximum (FWHM), whereas the findings were the opposite in the case of increasing B under the LH configuration. These findings may be beneficial for designing externally tuneable organic chemical sensors in the microwave frequency region.

Abstract:We investigate the optical properties and magneto-optical (MO) Faraday effect of a type of hybrid magneto-plasma crystal (HMPC) that is composed of a magnetic layer sandwiched between two Ag layers containing an array of holes. It is found that the Faraday rotation is effectively enhanced due to Fabry-Perot resonance and waveguide surface-plasmon (WSP) hybrid mode coupling, respectively, and their peaks are always consistency with the corresponding transmittance peak in position if this structure possesses with C 4h symmetry. Moreover, we take the square hole array structure as an example to investigate the characteristics of the transmission and Faraday rotation spectra, and present the dependences of the transmittance, Faraday rotation angle, and figure of merit on structure parameters, such as the size of the square hole, period, and the thickness of the Ag layer. In order to understand the underlying physical mechanism of significantly enhanced Faraday rotation, we analyze the distribution of electric and magnetic fields at the two resonance wavelengths. The results indicate that the enhanced MO Faraday rotation, whose resonant wavelength is almost insensitive to the size of the square hole, is primarily caused by the Fabry-Perot resonance; the other enhanced Faraday rotation, whose resonant wavelength is almost linearly related with the size of the square hole, arises from the coupling effect between WSP hybrid mode existing in square holes of two Ag layers. The results hold significant importance for the development and application of MO devices, and provide valuable insights into the design and optimization of novel MO systems.

Abstract:Magnetically induced self-assembling is considered a novel method to form photonic crystals (PCs) by the directive arrangement of nanoparticles (NPs) under a magnetic field. Magnetically responsive PCs (MRPCs) have become one of the most promising materials due to their adjustable bandgap along with the field intensity and direction, and rapid and reversible response. In this paper, we review the basic principles of MRPCs, the research progress of magnetically induced self-assembling PCs including synthesis and modification of magnetically induced NPs, the formation of an ordered structure of MRPCs, the non-spherical materials self-assemble into PC structure, and the non-magnetic materials self-assembling into PC structure. And then we also summarize the regulatory factors of the physical and chemical responses under magnetic field, and give an outlook as to the applications of MRPCs.

Abstract:Photonic crystals have stimulated extensive interest of study.Characterized by periodic structures and photonic band gaps,these materials have promising applications in microwave and optoelectronics.In early days,there has been much attention paid to dielectric photonic crystals,while magnetic materials have not drawn much attention for photonic crystals since the magnetic permeability μ of magnetic materials is equal to unity in the optical range.However,most ferrites have values of μ quite different from unity in the microwave range and thus can be exploited for magnetic photonic crystals(MPCs).One of the special characters of the MPCs is its photonic band gap can be tuned by an applied static magnetic field.Therefore,MPCs can be used as switches and tunable filters in microwave engineering.Not limited in microwave frequencies,the MPCs may also be realized in infrared and visible frequency range.Recent studies show that meta-materials have evident magnetic response,which makes optical MPCs possible.Therefore,there have been some growing interests in MPCs and some papers have devoted to the investigation of MPCs.We study the band structure of two-dimensional magnetized MPCs in which both magnetic anisotropy and dispersion is considered.Photonic band structure is a basic and important tool to understand the characteristics of photonic crystals.Numerous theoretical approaches have been developed to calculate the photonic band structures for 2-D and 3-D photonic crystals.These include conventional plane-wave expansion method(PWM),real-space transfer-matrix method(TMM),and finite-difference time domain method(FDTD).These methods were developed for the dielectric photonic crystals where the dielectrics are considered isotropy.However,MPCs are anisotropic and dispersive at magnetized state,so theses methods need some modifications.In this paper,we have investigated photonic band structure of 2-D magnetic photonic crystal with triangular lattice under external static magnetic field by modified plan wave expansion method and experiments.Under the condition that magnetic permeability is both anisotropic and dispersive,we have derived calculation formulas of the method.Using this modified PWM we calculate the band diagram of the MPCs made of ferrite rods in a dielectric substrate.The obtained bandgap is in a good agreement with the transmission spectrum by full wave simulations and measurements of a real sample of magnetic photonic crystals.The results demonstrate the validity of the modified plane-wave expansion method in the band structure calculation of photonic crystals with dispersion and anisotropy.
Electro-optic and magneto-optic photonic devices based on multilayers photonic structures

Abstract:In this work we describe different types of photonic structures that allow tunability of the photonic band gap upon the application of external stimuli, as the electric or magnetic field. We review and compare two porous 1D photonic crystals: in the first one a liquid crystal has been infiltrated in the pores of the nanoparticle network, while in the second one the optical response to the electric field of metallic nanoparticles has been exploited. Then, we present a 1D photonic crystal made with indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles, and we propose this system for electro-optic tuning. Finally, we describe a microcavity with a defect mode that is tuned in the near infrared by the magnetic field, envisaging a contact-less magneto-optic switch. These optical switches can find applications in ICT and electrochromic windows.

Abstract:We examine manipulating electromagnetic waves in magnetic photonic crystals (MPCs) with external magnetic fields. We predict new giant magnetoreflectivity and giant magnetorefractivity effects: with an external magnetic field of a magnitude much smaller than the anisotropy field of the ferromagnet, the MPC can be changed from completely reflecting to nonreflecting with corresponding changes in the angle of refraction. Application to the storage of electromagnetic radiation is also discussed.
Significant enhancement of magneto-optical effect in one-dimensional photonic crystals with magnetized epsilon-near-zero defect

Abstract:Nonreciprocal (NOR) transmission with magneto-optical materials plays a critical role in a broad range of applications, such as optical isolation, all-optical signal processing, and integrated photonic circuits. The underlying mechanism is that a static magnetic field can break the time-reversal symmetry in the presence of magneto-optical materials. However, the typical NOR devices usually need a large size because the weak magneto-optical activity of materials. Here, our theoretical investigations show that the NOR transmission can be obtained in the one-dimensional photonic crystal with a magnetized epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) defect due to strong field localization in the ENZ medium. The inherent weak magneto-optical activity is significantly enhanced in ENZ medium. In our configuration, the wavelength shift of transmission peaks along two opposite incident directions can be up to 100 times higher than that in the case that the defect layer is a normal bismuth iron garnet. Such results will provide a new degree to design novel magneto-optical devices with small size, and may open novel routes to exploit advanced materials for steering the electromagnetic waves in nano-scale structures.

The wide-angle broadband absorption and polarization separation in the one-dimensional magnetized ferrite photonic crystals arranged by the Dodecanacci sequence under the transverse magnetization configuration

Abstract:Abstract Utilizing the transfer matrix method, a multifunctional infrared device possessing the properties of the wide-angle broadband absorption and the polarization separation based on the one-dimensional (1-D) magnetized ferrite photonic crystals (MFPCs) arranged by the Dodecanacci sequence is designed theoretically under the modulation of the external magnetic field. The magneto-optical effect generated in the proposed MFPCs gives birth to the ultra-broadband absorption regions under the transverse electric (TE) mode, one runs at 16.22 THz –30.89 THz and the other covers at 33.52 THz–70.00 THz. The mechanism of the wide-angle (at most 80.89° for TE mode) absorption is analyzed by the interference cancellation condition. Moreover, owing to the different effective permeabilities of the MFPCs under the two polarization modes, the propagation behaviors of the electromagnetic (EM) wave are diverse which present the absorption features under the TE mode and show the transmission properties under the transverse magnetic (TM) mode in the structure. Compared with the periodic and Thue-Morse structures, the complex symmetry of the Dodecanacci sequence makes the absorption features of the MFPCs superior to that of the former. Besides, the influences of the magnetic field intensity and the dielectrics’ thicknesses on the angle-insensitive absorption and polarization separation characteristics are discussed explicitly. This research provides meaningful guidance for the modulation and absorption of the infrared light wave and the design of the multifunctional magnetically tunable optoelectric device.

Abstract:We have demonstrated experimentally a one-way magnetic surface plasmon (MSP) electromagnetic (EM) waveguide in the microwave range based on the magnetic photonic crystals (MPCs). The waveguide exhibits asymmetric transmission of EM waves in the frequency range near the MSP resonance for an MPC, such that a significant one-way propagation can be observed in the channel between the two MPC slabs, each in an external static magnetic field (ESMF) of opposite directions. The one-way waveguide is not only immune to interstitial metal defects but also robust against the disorder of rod position. Furthermore, its working frequency can be flexibly tuned by an ESMF, which makes it more favorable for the design of EM devices. The physics is related to the broken time-reversal symmetry of the MSP band states and the excitation of a giant circulation of the energy flow, similar to the case in the quantized Hall effect.
Optimization of Two-Photon Absorption Enhancement in One-Dimensional Photonic Crystals with Defect States

Abstract:One-dimensional photonic crystals with a defect layer of CdS were fabricated. The observed enhancement of two-photon absorption (TPA) in the CdS layer can be attributed to the intensified optical field confined within the defect layer of the photonic crystal. The results show that the enhancement of TPA coefficient depends basically on the number of periods of the photonic crystal and the defect mode position in the photonic band gap. The observation agrees qualitatively with the expectations of a computation by matrix transfer formulation.

Abstract:We report on the magneto-optical and the magnetic properties of 2-dimensional (2-D) spin photonic crystals (SPCs), which were fabricated using photolithography and wet-etching processes. Circular-shape holes with rhomboidal lattice symmetry were grooved into the top ferromagnetic layer composed of Co while the bottom Ni layer was kept unpatterned. Such structures having the same lattice symmetry but different periodicities (viz., 1.3 and 1.6 µm) were investigated using magneto-optical Kerr effects (MOKE) measurements. The change in periodicity was found to be useful in tailoring the magnetic properties. An in-plane easy-axis magnetization was observed for both samples. Significant enhancement of the switching field by nearly 2.5 times was noticed for the sample having smaller periodicity. This is attributed to a change in the magnetostatic energy due to the varied lateral dimension. Additionally, the MO measurement showed a strong dependence on the incident angle. These experimental results manifest the ability of controlling the MO, as well as the magnetic, properties of 2-D SPCs by modifying the periodicity and by forming a bilayer structure.

Abstract:A magnetophotonic crystal (MPC) with a locally etched magnetic layer is proposed for all-optical excitation of magnetization precession in the confined area. When the sample is illuminated by circularly polarized monochromatic plane wave, the optical MPC mode and the effective magnetic field excited by the inverse Faraday effect are localized inside the etched area. Therefore, the optical impact on the spin system in a magnetically ordered medium becomes confined in both lateral directions on the order of tens of nanometers and along the film thickness serving as a nanoconfined source of spin waves. The dependence of the spatial distribution of the effective magnetic field and magnetization precession amplitude on the depth and dimensions of the etched area are addressed. A proposed design of the MPC can find its applications in the field of magnetization dynamics generation as a compact and stable source of the spin waves that allows compact arrangement of the sources for some complex spin waves excitations.

Abstract:In this paper, the properties of a reconfigurable device which realizes the omnidirectional band gaps (OBGs), nonreciprocity (NR) and polarization beam splitting (PBS) based on the one-dimensional (1-D) magnetized plasma photonic crystals (MPPCs) nested with quasi-periodic Pell and Thue–Morse sequences are theoretically investigated by the transfer matrix method (TMM). The obtained results show that the OBGs, the NR region, and the scope of PBS can be notably manipulated by the plasma frequency, plasma cyclotron frequency, incident angle, and the plasma collision frequency. More specifically, the higher plasma frequency is needed for accomplishing the property of OBGs while the better performance of NR can be achieved with a larger incident angle and a higher plasma cyclotron frequency. Also, the lower plasma frequency and higher plasma cyclotron frequency are suitable for the splendid performance of PBS. The augment of the plasma collision frequency is adverse to the properties as mentioned above. Due to the Voigt magneto-optical effect generating from the magnetized plasma layers, the time-reversal symmetry is destroyed which is beneficial for obtaining the properties of NR and PBS. Besides, owing to the nested technology which breaks the spatial symmetry of the structure further, compared with the conventional 1-D single quasi-periodic structures, the proposed nested MPPCs have a preeminent strength in achieving the three functions through modulating the corresponding physical parameters. These findings provide theoretical guidance for the design and application of the multifunctional devices.

Nematic reorientation effects on resonant modes, wavelength mismatch, and slow-light phenomena in one-dimensional magnetophotonic crystals with a dual anisotropic defect

Abstract:The present study is devoted to the investigation of spectral properties of an alternated sequence of magnetic and dielectric layers containing a dual defect based on magnetic and nematic layers. Combining the Hydrodynamic Continuum Theory for nematic liquid crystals and Berreman's formalism, we determine how the nematic ordering affects the light localization, polarization rotation, and slow-light phenomena observed in the magnetophotonic system. In particular, we analyze the effects associated with a field-induced reorientation of the director in a nematic defect with strong planar boundary conditions. Our results reveal that field-induced reorientation of the nematic ordering can be used as an efficient mechanism to tune and control the spectral properties of magnetophotonic structure, anomalies in group velocity, and the wavelength mismatch between resonant mode and maximum polarization. The effects of nematic layer thickness are also analyzed.
